Awesome
(At least a half-dozen players now wear dreadlocks, mostly in the Lions’ secondary.)

“And I’ve got the young guys to compete with, Milli and Vanilli. But hopefully I can catch them in a few years.”

From The Detroit News: http://apps.detnews.com/apps/blogs/lionsblog/index.php?blogid=2167#ixzz0pcxhPulU

Not only is our secondary all going to look like predators out there, but we have Burleson giving them a new nickname.

OJ

I dunno if we will get him but I think mayhew is smart enough to at the very least explore all options and avenues to improve the team and if he will..“I belive he would be a great asset next to louis” than he will be on the phone this afternoon with his agent as soon as the clock click over to FA bound.

O.J.

I’ve been waiting for news like this for the past several days. June 1st is finally here I think we should act aggressively to get O.J. O.J. and Delmas will dominate for years to come. I think we are lucky that the Rams haven’t done anything yet. Also, there are still going to be many other teams in the hunt so we need to do act quickly.

Sean what do you think the chances are of OJ signing in Detroit?

We have been showing interest since FA started, some people seem to think that he will by pass us to go to a playoff ready team. That would make since if he were Sharpers age, but being young you would think he would rather be apart of helping a franchise be a playoff team instead of just going along for the ride. I think its about a 75% chance of him coming to the D, it’s close to his hometown and maybe one of the teams he grew up cheering for.

being a fan of the lions as a kid is our only chance imo..

he all ready had that help a team that need it with the rams… why we are ahead of the rams he might not see it that way..

i can see the jets make a play for him seeming how there a team full of DB now

by det32 on Jun 1, 2010 3:14 PM EDT up reply actions

I know we only won 1 more game than the Rams

and even lost to them but were miles ahead of them and in the second year of the Schwartz. The front four has the talent to be the best in the NFC, and to add a guy like OJ to the secondary will make Houston, Wade and Spievey look famous. We are not the same team from last year, we basically hurled a mountain w KVB, Will and Suh added on the D and Nate, Scheff, Best and Sims on the O. We got Stafford, Grew, Delmas, and Levy w a year under the belt and a full year of the D and O. Big things to come in the D and it will start this year…

OJ is dating Mike Singletary’s daughter, he may just be a 49er soon.
I guess that’s the problem with having a young head coach.

They all ready have Goldson, who is young and pretty good. Michael Lewis, old and not that good..

but comes with a high salary. And draft pick Taylor Mays. I would think that the 9ers safety position is full right now. But their GM is new and inexperience. And trends to bow down to Singletary’s will.

i’m from windsor, ontario home of o.j and i’m good friends with his brother maha and all the talk around here is the possibility for o.j to come back home pretty much across the river and have crazy fan support and the ability to turn a franchise around. this is an opportunity that the lions won’t turn down if possible.

OJ in detroit, in my dreams

I am a season ticket holder and I am just so not on the bandwagon that is going on around here. The Lions will not pick up OJ because we don’t make these kind of moves. Just like we did not pull the trigger on Pac Man or the guy from San Diego. I can even go back to woodson who we could have had. We just do not make good moves. We have so many needs yet we choose not to make them. So dream on but OJ will not come here. Our DBs suck, we have one good safety, our LBs suck (Peterson is old), Levy is unproven, and while I love Zacks hits it is his misses that I like worse. Plus what depth at this pos. Now we do have one heck of a DL. This pathetic team will win 4 games and I in my stupidity will blindly send them more money for next year.

You dont even know the players name. As far as Pac Man. How many teams were lining up for him? We already have better players on the roster. I am sick of near-sighted fans. That have their head in the sand. And always use that same quote, " the same ol’ Lions." If you had any football knowledge. You would know this is not the same Lions. But I am sure I will hear from you again in a few years. When the Lions are beating teams, and going to the playoffs.

Can I have your tickets?

I’ll give you 50% of face value for them right now. Why suffer through another season of misery when you can take the dough and at least drink away your sorrows. Clearly you have reason to be upset that the Lions would do something as ridiculous as completely revamp the D-Line, or try to finally solidify the O-Line, or draft a franchise QB to throw to their franchise WR, draft one of the most explosive running backs in college last year, give that franchise QB several other weapons to throw to, pickup two completely different cornerbacks….wait, I forgot, what is that your upset about again?

i don't think the toledogolf is an idiot

just a lions fan that needs to see it in order to believe it.

i sorta agree with him that 4 wins is more likely than 8 (i’ll guess 5 right now).

i do believe that the lions are on the right track, and i’m very excited for the next couple of years.

i found it interesting that the “you’re a bad fan / i’m a super fan” posts were coming from non-season ticket holders to season ticket holders.

by redwingxviii on Jun 2, 2010 11:38 AM EDT up reply actions

Agreed

Not everyone who is a fan has to believe the team is going 16-0. And not being super optimistic doesn’t mean your an idiot.

But if golf doesn’t think the team makes good moves, why would he support them by buying tickets? If the team doesn’t make you happy or you don’t have any support for the moves, why not spend your money somewhere else, on something that can give you some joy?

My two favorite teams are the Tigers and Brewers. Drunk tigers. That sounds about right.

he’s on a message board for lions fans, i think he probably likes the lions.

the 1 win per blue moon brings him plenty of joy.

also, knowing people from michigan, i think he probably believes if he says the “lions won’t get OJ” that the lions might get OJ (works in reverse too)

5 wins in 2010, 8 wins in 2011, playoffs in 2012. I can dream.

haha i think this is getting a little silly

no need to apologize i don’t think. we’re going to have a great 4-8 win season with hopes of being a contender one day.

I get what you're saying

I’m not gonna slam ya. I’m not gonna knock this current FO for not getting Woodson.
I think the Schwartz and Mayhew weren’t impressed with PacMan and Cromartie is well known for shying away from physical play. Thats why Mayhew put the kabosch on a trade with SD for him.
I gotta disagree with the “Lions don’t make good moves” statement. Yes, the previous administrations were notoriously bad and this applies to them, but This new FO has made more good moves/picks than I have fingers and toes. Knocking the Mayhew regime is just guilt by association with Millen and I refuse to do that.
I don’t see this team being down 21 pts. starting the 2nd quarter every game and that in of itself will equal a more competitive and balanced team.
Just my worthless 2 cents

you can’t blame Mayhew for not getting anyone he didn’t personaly draft or sign..I don’t think schwartz really seen anything in pacman that made him say WHAT A STEAL he knows what to expect with him anyways. Cromartie is a tough call a huge upgrage for us but not the Gun style corner we want which is very physical…kind of buchanons falling he’s a cover guy not a physical tackler like Wade and Houston are suppose to be. We have to give JIMMY and Mayhew time before we start passing judgement while some of us like or dislike moves more than others (ernie sims is a great example) we can’t call for there heads after 1 and a half off-seasons when they were left witha winless team that had a solid RB and trying to develop a potential HOF wide reciever with nothing around them.

O. J. Atogwe

This guy needs to be a Lion period.

First of all it will be just under 7 million but he might take a little less. I think the tender for the Rams has to be 6.7 or 6.8 million, a couple hundred thousand is a big difference. Secondly who says he will demand that much? For all we know Mayhew might sign him for 5 million a year. The ONLY reason his salary is being talked about that high is because the rams franchised him one year. And he did not perform up to that salary, hence why he is on the outs with the rams. Other teams will push the offer up some but he could sign with us for under 6 million for all we know.

Now that we have talked about his side of the money lets talk about the Lions side of the money. Lets call it the Windsor connection. The Lions actually have a decent following across the boarder, I know because my uncle is French-Canadian and his brother is a huge Lions fan. I remember watching a game at his house as a kid. It is similar with the Red Wings, a lot of Windsor natives have more of an affinity with Detroit just across the river than with Toronto or other teams that are further away. It is similar to all of the Cheese head fans in Western Michigan. The point is this, getting Atogwe will help strengthen that Windsor connection and it will sell seats, increase TV ratings, and help bring cash flow back into the Lions. So you cannot look at the financial equation one sided. I would not be surprised to see O. J. generate a million a year in revenue for the Lions if not more based off of not only tickets sold to Canadians at Ford Field but also merchandise sales and a foothold into the Windsor market for the NFL.

Now here is the best reason to sign the guy. We need him. he would be a good young compliment to Delmas and fill another hole on our team with a guy that has a lot of upside potential. There are not many free agents with his skill set along with not being old and adding in the Windsor connection to boot. I said “boot”, how “aboot” that eh, you hosers!

by Evilsmurf on Jun 1, 2010 10:48 PM EDT reply actions

Confusion on my part...

…didn’t the Rams tender him at the lowest possible amount? I might completely misunderstand the way it works, but I thought they basically made it so that if a team decided to sign him and the Rams chose not to match the offer that the team signing him wouldn’t have to give up anything. If that’s the case, why wouldn’t the Lions have made him an offer from the start?

Hey wayne fontes

Can you change your log in name? I am a 50 year lions fan. Wayne Fontes was to Lions coaching as Matt Millen was to Lions managing. Almost EVERY game the Lions lost in his tenure (1st (worst) in Lions history, they were ahead at halftime.) That’s the epitome of being outcoached, including the NFC title game against Washington. 13-10 at halftime, Lions ahead, 44-13 final. Lions lose. With some of the most talent in NFC north history, this guy was the biggest fucking failure in Lions history. Up to and including Millen. Most wins in Lions history, most losses, too. Wake up Coccaine Wayno Faggos.

by dylan415 on Jun 3, 2010 8:23 PM EDT up reply actions

They tendered him at 1.5 1.6 mil range, no teams offered because they would have to give up picks and more importantly that was way too low of an offer

So they backed themselves into a corner pretty much by tendering him that low, I think it upset him too, it was a slap in the face. As for his worth it is all debatable and for the agent and GM to argue over. My original point is that I could see him sign for anywhere from 4-7 mil per year with a team, honestly IMO an incentive laden 5 mil a year deal would be ideal. But one of my secondary points was that the Lions can over pay for him without really over paying, because he will bring in some revenue that will not be here unless he is on our team, the Windsor connection. So the Lions could sign him for 7 mil a year and effectively only be paying him 6 mil due to the Windsor connection, or even if they can get him a bit discounted because he is close to home and the Lions are a team on the rise, then they get in the 5 mil a year ballpark with the increase in money he will bring to the team via tickets, TV ratings, and merchandise sales.

by Evilsmurf on Jun 2, 2010 2:14 PM EDT up reply actions

I thought....

…that a tender of that value didn’t require the team that gets him to give up draft picks. It sounds like it’s a moot point now.

"Under certain circumstances, profanity provides a relief denied even to prayer." -Mark Twain

by Mushy on Jun 3, 2010 10:55 AM EDT up reply actions

Not sure on the picks but I was trying to point out that there was a lo of opportunity for him to sign with the Rams or other teams before now

Something has been keeping teams away. Basically he could have set his own value to the Rams by going out and getting offers, but he did not. It is a clear statement to me that he does not want to be a Ram, for whatever reason.

On the flip side the Rams set his salary too high when they franchised him before, no one wants this guy at 7 million. Therefore he has to humble himself a bit if he wants to play in the NFL and take a deal for 4-6 million a year, he could still land a nice signing bonus though. There is only one owner out there that I feel is crazy enough to pay Atogwe 7 million and it is AL Davis. But I think even he has been humbled by his error with Jamarcus Russell. It seems to me all of the deep pockets owners have been burnt recently, Snyder (Washington) with Haynesworth, Davis (Oakland) with Russell, and Jones (Dallas) with Roy Williams. Julius Peppers got a big payday from Chicago this year and that is a bit unusual for them, a clear sign of desperation on their part. Chances are pretty good that Peppers signing will end up hurting them too, the potential for him to not earn that money is just too great considering his age and the team he is going to.

I think that Atogwe has just been put in a rough spot. He was overpaid by the Rams and yet he is obviously upset with them over something or he would have been signed by them already. When I look at all the factors I actually put him at a VERY good chance to be a Lion this year. However he will have to eat some humble pie and take less than the over priced 7 million figure that people keep throwing around.

Anyways sorry for the wall of text, to reiterate my point, there was a lot of opportunities for him to sign, especially with the Rams. It is likely he will not be a Ram. And I do not see any team paying him 7 million a year, without it causing damage to the team down the road. Not only will it effect the salary cap when it comes back but it will also inflate player salaries across the board and cause a lot of grief for the general manager in negotiating future deals. All of the teams that have ownership that are big spenders have been burned recently so I think he is going to be hard pressed to find work at that salary.

One of the best quotes I ever heard was by Charlie Casserly on NFL Network. Charlie was a front office man for the Redskins and Texans in the past, he was actually their general manager when they picked Mario Williams. Anyways they were discussing Eric Berry this year and he explained why the positional value on safety is low compared to other positions. He said “I can draft a starting safety in every round of the draft”. And that is pretty accurate. Sure it is hard to get a game changer later in the draft but you can get a solid starter in later rounds. The skill set required to play the position and amount of good players coming out of college is just a lot greater than say at left tackle or quarterback. So I would not despair, even if we “get by” another year with the guys we have they are far from horrible or the worst safeties in the NFL. More to the point, there will be plenty of good ones in next years draft and I think we could pick up an impact guy somewhere in rounds 3-5 at about 1/10th the price tag.

if we get him and bulluck we win 9 games maybe make wildcard, again thats a big “IF” seeing how the lions dont ussually make huge moves like this.
