Friday Notes: Lions Get Creative For OTA Drills
- Steve Wyche is reporting that Oshiomogho Atogwe "isn't seeking an outrageous salary or guaranteed bonuses." Apparently what he wants is still too high for teams right now, but the Rams are hopeful that they will re-sign him at some point.
- The Lions are using an enormous tire for one of their drills since hitting isn't allowed in OTAs. And no, it's not the giant Uniroyal tire on I-94 (that was my first thought when I saw the article).
- Teams have actually been penalized recently for hitting in OTAs, but Jim Schwartz is so meticulous about that type of thing that it probably will never be an issue for the Lions.
- How's this for a stat: Detroit's roster has 33 players that weren't on the team last season.
- Ndamukong Suh will be an honorary official for this Sunday's NASCAR Sprint Cup race at MIS.
- Shaun Hill's throwing motion apparently isn't very pretty.
"I don't know if you're ever going to say effortless and Shaun Hill and a pass together," Schwartz joked. "It's no disrespect to Shaun. That's what he has, and he finds a way to get it done. Those guys that have come up through the bottom of the league, I have a lot of respect for those guys."
Like Hill later said, "The ball gets where it needs to be and that's the name of the game."
- Jordon Dizon is beginning to think more on the football field after not doing it enough in his first couple years in the league.
- The Detroit Lions Invitational (golf tournament) raised $75,000 for charities.
- Tony Scheffler is thrilled to be playing for the Lions.
- The 49ers traded Isaac Bruce to the Rams so he could retire with his long-time team. In exchange for Bruce, Adam Schefter reports that the 49ers got a conditional 2012 draft pick that hinges on if Bruce plays in 2010. Since he just retired, that obviously isn't going to happen.
- SB Nation interviewed DeMaurice Smith, the executive director of the NFLPA.
- The 49ers are closer to finally getting a new stadium.
- The Redskins signed former Lion Mike Furrey.
- Another former Lion, Stuart Schweigert, signed with the UFL's Omaha Nighthawks.
- Jared Allen, like most of us, believes Brett Favre will be back after the Vikings are done with training camp.

Hey Sean,
How does the “Fan Confidence”, thing work on the side of the front page? It is new, and I can’t figure it out. It says “last tallied” on 6-9-10, but I don’t remember seeing a poll or anything.
Maybe I’m an Idiot, but can you explain it to me.
it closed on june 9th its always been in the corner its new and the first one i think

Dizon
Jordon Dizon is beginning to think more on the football field after not doing it enough in his first couplet years in the league.
Maybe if he wasn’t thinking so much about poetry he could focus on football.
Lol whoops

Well Finally
I tried to sign up days ago while reading the site from the middle of the north country just south of the Big Mac bridge while on my Droid, to comment on DrewLion’s article about has the tide finally turned for the Lions…YES….I do believe were witnessing a turn around with the team that only injuries and some bad luck will had back.
That said.
I feel for players like Dizon and even Stanton for being drafted at the tail end of the biggest cluster**** front office in the history of sports. Let the dust settle with some stability and I think you’ll see the talent come out of Dizon.
Welcome to POD
I am not as high on Dizon as you are. My greatest hope for the guy is that he becomes a special teams ace for us.
Dizon
I personally like Dizon and would at least like to see what he can do on the field. We are giving Follett a chance, why not Dizon? Follett was a late round pick while Dizon was a second rounder, so I say let’s see what we’ve got here.

I am starting to warm to the idea of signing OJ Atagoweguah
I think that our secondary is in too much of shambles for us to pass up a guy that can help. I don’t think this guy is the best safety out there or anything, but I think he is better than what we have and in a secondary with another year of patches on the tires, we can’t pass up a guy we could get some good years out of.
yea hes only 28 and top 5 free saftey hed help alot

I think the tire exercise was brillant,
and find it interesting that 33 new faces have emerged on to the roster over the off season.
Why is Jahvid Best Returning Punt and Kicks?
That puts him as a high risk candidate for another concussion that would end his career, right? Anyone know why the Lions are not thinking like the Superbowl Champion Saints and putting Best in a position to be a star like Reggie Bust as a slot/ direct handoff reciever back.
Because he's fast and elusive...
Have you seen his fullspeed cut?…. my ankles hurt just watching.
If the LIons were concerned about his head, they wouldn’t of drafted him.
Any fast elusive guy can return kicks.
I’m not fast but I can return kicks because of the angles I take and I’m elusive.
Have you seen best's use of blockers?
i am unsure if i want him returning punts, but if watch video of the guy he is amazing at using his down field blockers. I could see him doing some great things on the return team.

what are you saying?
I understand the point you’re trying to make, but using Bush is a bad example, considering that he does return punts from time to time. Also, I’m sure that the Lions will use Best in a variety of ways to get him the ball with space.
thats a ton of touches for a rookie
and cosidering that we have k smith on the roster and we’re gonna be a pass happy offense, i dont see it happening.
The beginning of the end of the misery
Um...
Bush returns punts… Terrible example to use… If anything, they are priming him to be a Reggie Bush.
Think with a clear head kids
Lions are down by less than a touchdown with less than 2 or 3 minutes. That’s when you’ll see Best retuning a kick. They just want to make him familiar.
or...
they are just seeing what he can on punts and kicks. i mean it is just minicamp so far
The beginning of the end of the misery
Best is our most explosive player on the offensive side of the ball( excluding CJ)..
It is a good idea to let him get his hands on the ball much as possible.

No way
Would I ever use a 1st rounder to return anything. I’d look high and low for some 400k scrub to put back there and just build up the special team play in front of him.

Tim Brown
did okay…Gale Sayers was all right…DeSean Jackson, the best offensive weapon on the Iggles, does okay…Danieal Manning looks good….MJDrew does well…
Not all 1st rounders, but talents none the less. You play the player where they can have the greatest impact on the game.
How many returners do you recall seeing get hurt returning? How many runners do you recall seeing get hurt running?
If he can do both, put him in the game.
It's good to see Furrey and Schweigert gets some time elsewhere
They are some good guys.

Mike Furry
To this day, I just just can’ understand why he’s still not wearing a Lions uniform. During his time here he played with vigor and skill making him the most consistent and the best player on the offense. Too bad, another M&M decision that we have to live with..When will the damage end?
Because his production dropped off dramatically....
and now Cleveland watched him continue to regress and released him (or didn’t resign him… not sure which). Washington will give him a chance, but that’s all it is… a small chance. I’m afraid that his time in this league is done. He had one good season and a bunch of subpar seasons in his career.
…that is not consistency.
