Adam Schefter: Lions Not in the Cards for Oshiomogho Atogwe

It seems like it would be easier to compile a list of the teams not interested in Oshiomogho Atogwe rather than the teams looking to bring him in.  I say that because quite a few teams have already been ruled out as options for Atogwe after not expressing interest in him.  One of those teams appears to be the Lions, according to a tweet from Adam Schefter.

O.J. Atogwe update: doesn't sound like Dallas, Philly, SF, Detroit in cards. Potential landing spots include St. Lou, Minn and Miami.

I guess that's that.  While I was hoping the Lions would end up with Atogwe if they could get him for a good price, it looks like they are joining the growing list of teams that aren't interested.  I don't know if these teams aren't all that interested because they are content with their roster or because they don't want to pay Atogwe the money he is probably looking for, but either way, the list of teams interested in him is much smaller than I expected.

I don't know what it is...

but I think it is a mistake to be complacent with a group of safeties that are shaky at best, outside of Delmas, especially when we have major question marks at corner…

Sounds like a recipe for more statistically supported deep routes from our opposition. All I can say is you get what you pay for.

While me may not all love are current DB situation we have to except each one of those guys is there for a reason if nobody liked Bullocks,Simpson,Wade, Spivey or Houston none of them would have been picked up. No need to rush him back though, he’s still very young, even by RB standards. I think he’s only 23 or 24 this year.

HMMMMMMMM

Big mistake I think. We have a shitty secondary aside from Delmas. We will get torched back there unless we add a decent safety and sorry guys but aside from Delmas the rest suck or are always hurt. We will be lucky to win 6 if every team posts passing records on us like they did last year. Granted I know our Dline is greatly improved but still they aren’t going to get pressure every passing play and thats when our boys will get torched.

by Usmarine0341 on Jun 2, 2010 7:31 PM EDT reply actions

Stuck with what we got

I think we blew our wad on KVB, Burleson, and still have to sign Suh (as well as Best). Although he seem to fit what we need (young, solid tackler, plays in the secondary), I don’t think the money is going to be spent anymore in FA. We will probably bring in some more warm bodies that get cut elsewhere, but the FO isn’t going to keep going all DSnyder in free agency.
We have to face the fact that unless Houston breaks out, Spievey plays at well above average for a 3rd round rookie, and some combo of Wade, Simpson, CC, and/or Bullocks at least are average NFL players, our secondary is at least another year away from sucking.

by ajmojo on Jun 2, 2010 7:41 PM EDT reply actions

You know today is the official first day of his release and surprisingly this is one of the main stories today for the NFL, what will happen w/ Atogwe ? …. Not a surprise in the aspect that he’d be a story but how much of a story he has become just for today alone and probably until he signs, in his favor this is good.

Right now i would also say take everything you hear w/ a grain of salt, as various media outlets have all reported something very different. First it was Minn, Dallas, Miami, and 49ers … never a mention of Detroit really [this can be a very good thing btw]. Then the reports start trickling down .. NO from Dallas, Minn, Miami [though this is conflicting heavily as its even been said they are still making strong push] . Seems 49ers havent said NO yet though at same time they are playing the best route and not actually commenting at all … something thats same for Lions as they havent actually said yes they are or are not going for him publicly.

I still think they are two players away from a legitimate season, not playoff just a 8-8 … one would be LB , the other a CB / safety and of course a lil more depth on line wouldnt hurt, get 2 of those 3 that can contribute immediate no question on if make team or not, and id say then this was a GREAT offseason.

Many thoughts on O. J. Atogwe and our secondary

First of all we cannot say our secondary will suck anymore than we can say they will be great. We have to see how everyone plays together. Chemistry and smarts can cover up a lot of other areas that might be lacking. Never under estimate a players heart or a teams chemistry. Namely I am speaking of the huge impact our revamped defensive line will have on on the rest of the defense. If you want an example of how much impact a dominant defensive line can make look at the Giants who upset the “not so perfect” Patriots recently. Look at how chemistry and a dominant line effected that Giants team, and then look at the steady decline the took after Strahan retired. There are more reasons than one that Suh reminds me of Strahan and I sure hope he does for the Lions defense what Michael did for the Giants.

That being said I think we have to look at the financial aspect things to see why there is a lack of interest in Atogwe. Lets take a look at Ed Reed and Troy Polamalu.

Ed Reed
http://www.rotoworld.com/content/playerpages/player_contract.aspx?sport=NFL&id=2222

6/27/2006: Signed a six-year, $44.4 million contract extension through 2012. The deal contains $15 million guaranteed, including a $7.5 million signing bonus and option bonuses of $6 million and $1.5 million in the second and third years. 2009: $3.6 million, 2010: $6 million, 2011: $6.5 million, 2012: $7.2 million, 2013: Free Agent

Ed is scheduled to make 6 million in base salary this year. And has a large front loaded roster option of 6 million also due this year. However next year he makes 6.5 million with a 1.5 million roster bonus for a total of 8 million.

Troy Polamalu
http://www.rotoworld.com/content/playerpages/player_contract.aspx?sport=nfl&id=681

7/23/2007: Signed a five-year, $33 million contract. The deal contains $15.375 million guaranteed, including a $10.975 million signing bonus. 2009: $2.9 million, 2010: $6.1 million, 2011: $6.4 million, 2012: Free Agent

This year Troy Will make 6.1 Million.

Now lets face the facts, Atogwe is somewhere in their league talent wise but has yet to prove it year in and year out like they have. This is the base reason why I stated that he would not be signed here, or anywhere else for 7 million. True a team might be desperate enough to do this but the general lack of positional value at safety will probably hinder O. J.‘s ability to land an inflationary contract in one of the worst economies in U. S. History. Any team that signs him for more than 6 million would be pulling a move similar to what Pete Karmanos did when he took Sergei Federov away from the Red Wings and Mike Illitch. Keep in mind that Federov was a personal vendetta and payback in the little “greek town hockey war” that the Illitch’s and Karmanos’s wage against each other. After that deal was over and done Pete admitted he made a mistake and let his personal feelings influence him into making a bad business decision. That Federov deal set the stage for an escalation in NHL player salaries that ended some teams, such as the Winnipeg Jets, whom are still feeling the effects today as the Phoenix Coyotes.

Given that scenario consider how much more solidarity that the NFL owners show in how they handle their business. Now consider the fact that the Detroit Lions have been losing money for years. There is very little chance that we will see Atogwe in Detroit for 7 million a year. Maybe 5 million yes but not seven. Considering the Windsor connection I could even see them signing him for near 6 million but that is only opening Pandora’s box. If we sign Atogwe for that now what will we have to pay Delmas when he consistently out performs him over the next 3 years? Perhaps if we had still been selling out Lions games the team would financially be able to do this, but even then I think the Lions and any other financially sensible team would balk at the 7 million asking price.

Take your 5 million a year deal and come pay for the Lions O. J. Do it for the home town team and your love of not only the game but the Detroit / Windsor area whom needs to have something to smile about and help us forget the pain of our daily lives. Do it for the same reason that Brees and Shockey and others went to New Orleans, do it becaue you believe in something, not because your looking for a payday.

OJ is good I will not argue against that

But there is no way I can consider him in the same class as Troy or Ed there are only 3 elite safteys in the NFL Reed. Troy and Sanders(when healthy) and maybe Brian dawkins can be in that list too. OJ is probably just under that list with guys like Rolle, Landry, Phillips ect… But to say Atogwe is in ed reeds league is probably over hyping him. I think him and Delmas could be the best TANDEM in the nfl hands down though.

Yeah I was aiming to prove that Atogwe has some things to prove before he is clear cut equal with Reed or Polamalu

I brought up their financial numbers to highlight just how outrageous Atogwe is for thinking he can get anywhere near 7 million. He is worth 4 million, and might get overpaid to 5 million, and considering the Lions can probably recoup 1 million of his salary from Windsor natives he could maybe get 6 million here but I see that as his absolute ceiling and for all I know the Lions might be putting him more near the 4-5 million range like everyone else will be.

On the Rams SB Nation...

They have said that everyone has seemed to drop out of the race. It is said to be between the Rams and the Lions. That is unless everyone is trying to lower his price and someone jumps back in or another team comes from left field with an offer. I think the Lions will get him and will be amazed if we don’t get him. I think only 2 things are in our way, possibly not healed or he wont get off his asking price to a reasonable amount. The later I think will be easy to over come since he has not been wanted so far. Come to Detroit OJ come HOME !!!!!!!!

Figures

this is the offseason where I am actualy starting to hate the Lions. Maybe I will stop buying my season tickets. Just give me a bit of hope and then field a 4 win team. No cap, it is time to win and we need this upgrade. Give him a 10 – 15mm SB and lower future salary for the new cap. But no, we will put Ko or some IR prone guy in this pos. What a joke this team is. Lots of you are in love with Mayhew but what has he done. Derrick Williams is a bust, Aaron Brown is a bust, Pettigrew is busted, got Grew for Sims. grew on a one year deal and can’t block. Don’t even tell me Nate at 25 mill was a good deal. Any one of us could have picked Stafford and Suh. So he made a great williams trade which was really Jerry Jones just sticking it in his lap. I like Bosh but a tone of money on an old player, same as Peterson. 4 win joke, stop pulling the carpet out from under neath me. Should have really cleaned house instead of just giving the job to Millens understudy. Lol that is like having a D student tutor your child.

Where to start...

There is a qoute a lot of us like to use on this site: “Rome isn’t built in one day”. I understand your a season ticketholder and you want to see a good product on the field, but I believe Mayhew is making moves that are based on building a winning football team, not one that can just put a bunch of “brand” name guys out there. Other than baseball, you can’t turn around a sports team by simply signing a bunch of high priced free agents.

To your points about the draft picks. Aaron Brown gave us about 210 yards of offense as the 3rd runningback in his rookie season. Oh, and he was a 6th round draft choice. I don’t even think a person can be called a bust if they are picked that low. To me, if a 6th round pick touches the ball more than four times in his rookie season, he’s a good draft pick. Pettigrew struggled in the passing game, but he has fairly solid in the run game. Also, even after all the struggles, he was on pace to have one of the best seasons (from a productions standpoint) by a rookie tight end. Derrick Williams, sure he didn’t do much, and its unknown what he will do in the future, but I’m not going to call any player a bust after one year in the league, but I will call it disappointing.

The trade for Scheffler: Sims was on a one year deal too, and we have virtually no chance of signing him, so we gave him for the highest bid, and no Scheffler can’t block, but thats not really what he is here to do. Will Heller and Pettigrew are the blocking TE on this team.

Yes, Nate Burleson isn’t worth $25 million, but thats the premium you have to pay players to come to sucky teams….

The beginning of the end of the misery

by Latif Masud on Jun 3, 2010 12:16 AM EDT up reply actions

The Burleson contract is LOW for a WR in his ability range.

Just look at what a 32 year old Houshmanzadeh got last year, 5 years $40 million.
Or what a 31 year old Laveranues Coles got last year, 4 year $28 million and cut after 1 year.
Or what Bernard Berrian got in 2008, 6 years $43.4 million.
Or what Roy Williams got in 2008 from the Cowgirls, 6 years $54 million. ROY WILLIAMS.
Or what Nate Washington got last year, 6 years $27 million, for a guy who was NEVER a starter.
Or what Antonio Bryant got this year, 4 years $28 million.

Sorry to tell you bud, but based on the NFL average contract for second tier receivers in the NFL, Buleson’s contract is a really good contract. Burleson is better than every player on that list except for MAYBE Antonio Bryant, and that’s debatable. Maybe you should try and do research into what these NFL receivers are making these days before you call Burleson’s contract a bad deal. It was a great deal by current NFL standards for wide receivers contracts.

by toled0lions on Jun 3, 2010 4:04 AM EDT up reply actions

And to mirror Latif's sentiments,

how the fuck do you consider a 6th round pick a bust after his rookie year. Hell a 6th round pick CAN’T be a bust at all. Any players taken that late that stick around and contribute in their first year are just bonuses. For a 6th round rookie who played for a small school in college, 210 all purpose yards and a touchdown isn’t bad. Find me even one other rookie drafted in the 6th round or later that contributed to their team even to that extent. I’d say Brown made some rookie mistakes and has to pick up the playbook better, but other than that, his open field ability and big play potential was a pleasant surprise last year.

Pettigrew was on pace to be 20th in receiving yards, 18th in receptions, and 18th in touchdowns among all TE’s in the NFL last year. That is just averaging out his numbers through the last 5 games of the season. That doesn’t even take into account that he was putting up better numbers every week as the season went along and was getting visibly better every week. If he would’ve even kept up his production from his last 3 games played, he would’ve been in the top 10 in every one of those categories last year, as a ROOKIE on a really bad offense. Not to mention he is an outstanding blocker to boot. So, let me ask you this, how is Pettigrew busted?? PLEASE explain, or are you just saying that blindly because being negative about everything gets your rocks off?

Personally

I don’t really care much about whether or not the Lions sign Atogwe. He is a good player, but I feel he is being overhyped. The guy want 7mil a year, which is a crazy amount for a safety. He would be a nice addition to the team, but I don’t see him doing a whole lot to improve our pass defense.

Besides, Atogwe is one of the Rams best players. If they, along with a bunch of other big market teams that can pay the 7 mil, aren’t signing him, then there has to be a bit more to the story then just the money issue here.

by Timberlandking on Jun 3, 2010 4:26 AM EDT reply actions

I think what people have to realize abotu Atogwe is this

He is slower than Delmas, he posted far lower numbers his rookie year than Delmas, he is better at causing fumbles than defending the pass. Now he is not bad at defending the pass but what Atogwe’s skill set really reflects is the modern day version of the Strong Safety. He is a lot more athletic and gifted in the passing game than the old school strong safeties were, but his trademark is causing fumbles. I think he would be a darn good compliment to Louis Delmas, however he is not as talented as Louis. Louis has the potential to be the next Ed Reed or Troy Polamalu. Atogwe on the other hand is a bit of a different player, he is more like Brian Dawkins as someone earlier mentioned. Atogwe is a great player, and definitely has pro bowl potential, but the Lions have to be careful how much they pay him because whatever they give him, they will need to give Louis Delmas more in a couple of years.

by Evilsmurf on Jun 3, 2010 4:17 PM EDT reply actions

Sorta disagree

If we ran a traditional defense, he would probably be the best guy to put next to Delmas, but our safeties get their own half of the field, where they need to be able to do everything well, which includes coverage skills. I’m not saying Otogwe is a bad cover safety, but that is where guys like Polamalu and Ed Reed seperate themselves from him. They can cover, tackle, pick passes off and force fumbles.

I would love to see him in a Lions uniform, especially since I went to a windsor high school, and Otogwe is really the pride of Windsor football, but I don’t think the combination would end up as good as some expect

I kinda see him as a modern day Bennie Blades

A really good player, but not elite. I agree with you he is not a perfect fit for our defense but I think it is more mentality than talent that causes that. His shortcomings for our defense though I think get outweighed as long as he comes in for the right price. I mentioned in another post that we can get a safety on his level in rounds 3-5 next year and pay him 1/10th the salary. It probably wont even take too long for a rookie safety to develop, the good ones make an impact almost immediately.
