whom would you poach?
So in my group of friends, I'm the only Lions fan, and pretty much everyone else has their own favorite team (this is what happens when you're raised in LA). The other day we played a hypothetical game where each of our teams could poach one player from any other team in the league (not including QBs, cause that's too obvious). It could be any player, any non-QB position, but it really factors in three elements. 1) What position on your team most requires a single infusion of talent? 2) Who are the marquee names in that position? 3) Of those marquee names, which one would you feel most comfortable rooting for over the next XX years?
This game factors in contracts and unruliness and injury history and all those things. The obvious answer most people do is to immediately say "oooh, I'd take Chris Johnson." And sure, there's a logic to that if you want to support it. But I'm of the mindset that more thought is necessary rather than a random polling of the Pro Bowl Roster. What are your guys thoughts for this Lions team? It's arguably harder to play this game for us cause there are so many holes, but I'd be intrigued to see your pick.
For the record, my pick when we played was for Darrelle Revis. I think this Lions team is BEGGING for a shutdown corner, and Revis is young and superlative. I'm not too concerned about the contract issue, since I assume the Lions would pay to keep him (hell, I'd chip in), and the man legitimately deserves to be the highest paid corner in the league. My runner-up was Ryan Clady, because I have a soft spot for Boise State and young franchise LT's are too valuable to pass up.
I'd put a poll up here, but there are really too many options to list. I'm curious to hear all of your takes on this.
(note - even if QBs were eligible, I think I still would have picked Revis. I believe in Staff, and honestly think he can get us there before too long.)

Go ahead and boo.
I hates me some buckeyes but Aj definatly plays with intensity and passion. Jake would be a good pick. For a wolverine I’d go with David Harris. Would anybody be able to stop Megatron and Greg Jennings?

Okay I admit it.
Willis is better. BUT I just love the way Aj plays. Louis isn’t the best saftey in the league but I love the way he plays and would pick him over most guys in the league. You don’t necissarly need the best player at times you need the player with the right attitude. You think I’m wrong just look at T.O. He has all kinds of talent but has one of the worst attitudes in sports.

that's the beauty of the game
granted I kinda cheated with my Revis pick, but still, it’s more fun to think of the kind of players you’d want on your team, not necessarily the ones who performed best elsewhere.
That said, I’d absolutely take Willis over Hawk. Willis was probably my third choice, and maybe should be ahead of clady.
i hate the packers
but most of my packer fan friends think AJ Hawk is terrible.
he is below average. DEFINITELY NOT POACH-WORTHY.
plus, he was probably puffed up on roids like Mathews.
Okay I get the point.
I’m WAY off on this one. Would it have been better if I said Ernie Sims or Larry Foote?

Guess if I bust your balls it trurns into a full assault LOL. AJ isn’t that bad in my opinion I think Lauranitis is the better of the two but I personally think AJ is solid defender he has room to improve though.

IT HAS TO BE POCKET....HERCULES
Maurice Jones-Drew with 3 names yous gots to have game…Sure we are good at RB I like K smooth and best but MOJO is a everydown BEAST whom respects the game and its players a true role model. I don’t care how small he is his heart cannot be compared to his size. The man loves to play and refuses to lose this is MY running back. A power runner who can make anyone miss his size has proved a advantage at times making him harder to get ahold of.
My runner up is cornerback Domonique-Rogers Cromartie (3 names again he has game) A great young DB I truley see him developing into a shutdown or atleast a top 5 corner in the NFL. The DR makes home visits and always has the prescription for 6!

Hands down the best defensive player in the league at any position. Revis or Asomugha would also be good choices.
by WestsideLionsFan on Jun 28, 2010 7:55 PM EDT reply actions
I don't know about "hands down"
You could make a case for him being the best defensive player in the league, but it’s hardly set in stone. I think guys like Revis, Jared Allen and Troy Polamalu would have to be in the conversation.
Troy Polumalu is the best defensive player in football
Thats not even close..changes games more than any player
Few others i’d love the Lions to have ..Jared Allen (dont like him) but heck of a player
Nanmdi Asaghmau CB Raiders (how ever you spell it)
DeMarcus Ware OLB that can get to QB
Jake Long young LT
Any other top notch WR /with CJ

I agree that health is an issue..but health, Reed is still better than Troy

by CapitolLions on Jun 30, 2010 10:17 AM EDT up reply actions
And Reed has?????
Not as of late! Troy IS the best Safety in the game today and I don’t care if you are talking about pass defence or run defence Troy is a game changer that is accounted for on every single play! Ask the Steelers fans how good that D was after he got hurt. The Ravens didn’t loose that much when Reed went down but the Steelers sure did. And Troy has not played that long he will be around for at least 6 to 10 more years.
How many lumps you want Doc?
No he hasn't, neither of them have
I was just saying I couldn’t pick one over the other for health reasons. I prefer Ed to Troy, That is all. Troy IS NOT THE BEST SAFETY, he is great, but it’s impossible to determine objectively that he is the best. There are just too many factors.
You are right about there being too many factors
But to me the best S in the game is a guy who a team can NOT live/play without; and that is TROY not Reed. Ed goes down and the ravens are not that bad of a D, but you look at how pathetic the steelers are without Troy out there and the clouds should be parting for your decision. Troy IS the best S in the game and Reed is a close second. And it does not really matter cause in another year or two we are going to be talking about Delmas and Berry as the 2 best safety’s in the game and for my 2 cents Delmas is going to get the nod over Berry.
How many lumps you want Doc?
Yep, a great safety (or 2) is a guy a team can't live without
In today’s increasingly pass-happy NFL, a great safety is a game-changer……more than a DT or a LB, maybe more than a DE or a CB.
And it does not really matter cause in another year or two we are going to be talking about Delmas and Berry as the 2 best safety’s in the game
And we could have had both. With them, we could have dominated BOTH sides of the field (Yes Virginia, there are 2 sides to the field). I hope we don’t regret passing on Berry. We’ll see.

Not sure we made the wrong pick at #2
But i really feel we could have gotten even more from our #2 pick if we had taken Berry instead of SUH. Especially when we already had 2 guys that could have started and a 3rd that would have done nicely in the rotation. I’m trying not to second guess our picks’ from this front office but I really think in 2 years time Berry would have been the better pick in this last draft.
How many lumps you want Doc?
Yep, I agree
I tried to point that out, too, but the pre-draft hysteria swept all that away.

Peyton Manning
I know we have Stafford, but Manning is tried and true, while Stafford could still fail (yeah… I just typed that). Manning would make us a Super Bowl contender in year one. He has taken less than stellar defenses to the post-season every year. Sure, he doesn’t have too many years left, but one Super Bowl win would satisfy me for a long time. Manning is the one player, aside from maybe Tom Brady, that could come to the Lions and immediately make us Super Bowl contenders… he’s that good.
Ahh... shit. I guess I missed the non-QB rule the first time I read through... lol
Okay, so I’d have to agree on Revis. He’s young and dominant. Not sure that one corner makes us any more than one win or so better, but I think that only QB’s can really make a massive change in the win-loss column.
no worries
we debated long and hard about the “no-qb” rule. In the end it’s just such a pain in the ass to weigh a QB’s worth vs. the other positions.
As for Revis, I honestly think that the difference between a great corner (like revis) and a bad corner (like ours) is a bigger difference than any other position on the field. First there are the obvious swings of 1-2 touchdowns a game to the dominant WR on the other team. Plus, consider that a stud CB frees up the safety to come to the line to defend the fun or assist the LB covering the TE (remember how we got eaten alive by TEs last year). I think that one piece has a huge trickle down effect that can lead to multiple wins, as evidenced by the Jets run last year. They’re not that great a team, but they went far largely because of the flexibility they had on D, which was a luxury afforded to them by revis.
I would poach Eric Berry
If you are going to take someone. Take someone that will grow with the team. Also Brandon Graham would be pretty good.

yeah,....
that would be a dream for many on this site. i pushed for a DT but I really like Berry too. he would be one i would poach. young with ENORMOUS upside.
hmmm
with only one poach available, I’d have to go with someone who has proven success in the NFL. I LOVE berry, but I can’t see taking him, over a stud, established CB. Especially because I really don’t think safety is the position we should target. Growth is all well and good, but I haven’t seen this coaching staff churn out any superstars yet (though Delmas has a legit chance).
but why?
do you think a proven Vet would get Detroit into the playoffs now? This team has alot of young players that could be the stars of the future. By the time guys like Suh, Best, Levy, Delmas, and of coarse, Stafford reach their potenial. A proven Vet would be on their way out of the league.
if the shoe fits...get another one just like it - George Carlin
Revis is 24
So, yeah, he’s got a hell of a lot of years left in him. He’s about as proven as you can get, yet still young enough to be a defensive cornerstone for years. He makes a lot more sense to me then Berry, a guy who has yet to prove anything.
Yeah..I also like it when he takes a sit in the middle of a play..

I agree and disagree
football isn’t like a regular job. Compared to most americans the careers are very short on average and you are smart to make the most you can in your prime because with a guy like revis who knows what 5 years down the road brings or even next year…Career ending injurys happen retired football players have a record of bad health you can blame somebody for wanting to get what he can while he can to secure his future. Then there are guys like Chris Johnson whos rookie contract dosen’t pay hime average of what he put up in numbers thats not any diffrent when someone you work with does less than you and makes an extra $5 an hour…I realise the amount of money they deal in is much less than the average american but….put that aside NOT all these athletes are being greedy all the time thats not to say someone like Andre Johnson should get a new deal because he failed to take advantage of his last contract thats on him. I don’t think there is ever an excuse to sit out of practice you are still an employee and have obligations to you teammates but as far as asking for new contracts its not as big of a deal as some make it when you think of it in its most basic element…Provide for you and your family we always want better for our family and are selves no matter how much money you make your kids can go to better schools and live better lives with just a little more….right.

I vote Revis or Berry
Dominant pass defenders are game-changers, neutralizing a star receiver or even an entire side of the field in the passing game.

And yes, it's "Revis Island"
Not “that pretty good CB benefitting from the pass-rush” Island. It’s a factor, but IMO an overrated factor. Otherwise, all pass defenders would suddenly look great with a great pass rush. We all know “Revis Island”, but we never heard much about the guy on the OTHER side, whoever that was. Didn’t he have an island? Maybe it was Gilligan’s Island. He must still be marooned there with the Skipper, because the Jets felt it necessary to get better players……Antonio Cromartie and Kyle Wilson.
Want a better team? Get better players.

I don't know
If a guy signs a huge contract and they under perform, the FO will cut them or trade them. So it stands to reason that if a guy over performs their contract, they should get some more cash. Its not like the FO doesn’t get something in return; when the player signs the bigger contract they also sign on for more years. I think that’s fair for a guy who you want to keep around—and keep around happy.
I fall on the side of players on contract talks 99% of the time. Sure they get tons of $$, but they have a window of opportunity of a couple years and then they will usually retire with multiple debilitating injuries. All so I have an excuse to get drunk on Sundays (and Mondays and Thursdays). Fair trade.
Exactly
If the rules of the game were like the NBA or MLB where once a contract was signed, both parties had to honor it completely until the end of said contract, then refusing to play would clearly be out of line.
However, in the NFL, where a team can essentially tear up a player’s contract and leave them unemployed on a moment’s notice, the rules are very different. I really, REALLY don’t understand how somebody could think it’s fair that a team should be able to cut a player whenever they feel they’re underachieving, yet expect a player to play for far less then they’re worth when they’re overachieving.
really you dont understand?
see Albert Haynesworth
if the shoe fits...get another one just like it - George Carlin
That's the 'Skins fault
They knew he had serious problems playing in a 3-4 before they just paid him that crazy $21 million bonus. They could have cut him before then, but THEY chose to keep him, despite knowing that he was a locker room cancer with work ethic issues. The only party to blame in that situation are the ’Skins.
Obviously I can’t change your old timer philosophy, and obviously you can’t change mine. And according to your philosophy, shouldn’t the ‘Skins have honored what they told Haynesworth when their owner PROMISED Haynesworth that they weren’t going to change from a 4-3 when he signed with them? There were other teams willing to pay Haynesworth as much as the Redskins, but Dan Snyder’s promise to him was a major part of the reason he signed with them, and the reason he’s so pissed off.
No, that is not the Skins fault.
The FO went to Albert. Said that they would release Albert straight up, or Albert could stay with the skins and recieve his 21 million guarenteed bonus on April 1st. Well, he decided to stay with the Skins, got his 21 million dollar check. Than decided to not show up for manatory OTA’s.
And that is why just about every player on the ’Skins roster has called him out.
if the shoe fits...get another one just like it - George Carlin
A few things:
1. It really is the ‘Skins fault, if for no other reason then for deciding that a guy who’s had character questions his whole career and really only had one dominant season (and that dominant season just coincidentally being in the last year of his contract) was worth $100 million. Really, what did Snyder expect?
2. I am not defending Haynesworth by any means. He’s obviously being very selfish and showing why he may be in the running for “worst teammate in the NFL”. I’m merely stating that the ‘Skins shouldn’t be mad at anyone besides themselves for being dumb/gullible enough to give a player like Haynesworth that much money.
3. Please remind me what Albert Haynesworth has to do with Darrelle Revis’ contract demands again?
My 2 cents
That’s why they call it a signing bonus! refering to your arguement that a contract can be ripped up at a moments notice, all these"STARS" that get these huge signing bonus’s get a percentage of guaranteed money, so if they fail to perform a year or 2 down the road (because they get fat and lazy) then a team has the right to cut their sorry ass’s and it’s not like the team does not suffer from it, how many years did we pay Scott Mitchell/H.Moore ect.ect.ect. If you pay a player then cut them before the end of the contract the team suffers for it so don’t think that the poor players are being screwed it’s us fans that have to pay $10 for a damn beer and $149.99 for a signed jersey (or more) and the cost of 1 stinking seat keeps going up year after year we are the ones being screwed by all these primadona’s wanting more and more money! Oh by the way GO LIONS and YEAH STAFF AND MEGATRON! 2 Prime examples of paying more than a player is worth.
How many lumps you want Doc?
Revis VS Asomugha
Asomugha has been the best CB in football for the better part of 6 years and continues to be the best even after he got paid. Not only that, you won’t find a better off field guy in all of sports. By the time Revis strings together 6 pro bowl seasons he will be making more than Asomugh ever has.
true
but nnamdi will be 29 soon and revis will be 25. Four years in football is an eternity. I agree that nnamdi is a class act and a proven asset, but I’ll trade four extra years for a bit of uncertainty.
I don't understand how Revis is an uncertainty
He was completely shutting down Randy Moss his rookie season, there’s nothing uncertain about it, he’s the best CB in the game.
I call it the Derek Anderson argument
One good season doesn’t (necessarily) make you worth a long, big money contract extension. People want a couple years worth of production, before they make up their mind on somebody, which by then, is almost the players whole career in NFL years.
I think Revis is here to stay, as far as talent goes. I guess people think he’s gonna fall off, they want more consistancy.
Shutdown Corner
Over the last 3 seasons Asomugha has been thrown at an average of 28 times a season, for an average of 10 catches against him all season. Revis was thrown at over 50 times last season and allowed 8 catches in his first 2 games. Asomugha will never have as many INTs or tackles as other top CBs but NO ONE throws his way, and that what makes a true shutdown corner.
Revis is a product of the system!
Take him out of the Jets system and put him in a different style of D and see if he plays that good. Case in point look at the Lions last 2 high profiled CB’s
How many lumps you want Doc?
If he's a product of the system, how come the CB on the OTHER side didn't play as good?
The Jets went out and got better players for the other side…..Antonio Cromartie and Kyle Wilson (btw, both better than any Lions recent CB’s, IMO).
Want a better team? Get better players.

I don't recall Sheppard playing that bad last year for the JETS.
But he was getting older and they had a chance and jumped on it to grab someone younger and faster and then drafted like 5 other CB’s. I just think they wanted someone younger so they didn’t need to have a safety watch his back on deep balls.
How many lumps you want Doc?
Apparently they wanted a lot of someones.....including 2 very good someones
A good CB frees up a safety. A good safety frees up LB’s, CB’s, etc. Good players in coverage free up other players to cover, or……blitz. In fact, it’s a good thing when you get a defensive back who’s good enough to take care of himself instead of having someone watching his back all the time.
Hey, the quality of your defensive backs matter! (just ask the Jets) Of course it matters, it’s common sense. I’m amazed it’s even in question.

Dwight Freeney
Obviously not our biggest need, but a solid DE is almost as valuable to your team as a QB. If you make it so the offense has to adjust to you, rather than vice-versa, that opens up so many other options for you. Nothing against KVB, Avril and DeVries, but none of them, IMO, are close to the level that Freeney has shown he can play at consistently.

Well...
From Wikipedia:
After the Broncos’ October 4th, 2009 victory over the Dallas Cowboys, Clady set a new NFL record for consecutive games to start a career without giving up a full sack. Through 20 games, he has surrendered only one half of a sack
No he didn’t make a Pro Bowl as a rookie, but I don’t see how that possibly relates to how good a player is later in their career.
They both started in the Pro Bowl last year, and you could make a case for either one. I personally would take Clady because he’s two years younger, but both are beasts. I think any team in the league would gladly take either one.
fair enough

I dunno
I’d like to poach Jared Allen and make Peterson run from him for awhile

Jake Long (offense) Leon Hall (defense)
2nd Option
Steve Breaston
David Harris
Yeah i know all UofM but all top notch in there position, GO BLUE…
Leon?
I mean he’s good and all. I have him as my starting corner in madden every year he’s been in the game so far, but there are better options. If you were going with a wolverine I would go Harris first. Your pick of Jake is an obvious choice. But as a 2nd option instead of Breaston I would go with Manninham.

i take the vet DB wolverine
Fills a need at corner and saftey can still make all the plays he may only play another couple of seasons but you can’t tell me charles woodson isn’t still one of the best DB’s in the game. He could teach are young guys a TON.

Woodson is Forever the greatest CB out of U of M...
but Hall isn’t miles behind and i say him over Woodson b/c he is younger and will be just as good as Woodson.
Leons good
But as good as woodson…I have a hard time beliving that yet…I think Charles could be a HOF corner Leon still has some developing to do…its not to say he won’t be as good as chuck but right now he’s not in that class yet.

Love Manningham
but Breaston is the man, i liked him tons more than Avant and Edwards. I have had the chance to met all of them at Michigan and hungout w them all good guys but hands down Steve is the best fit for us. Now i’d love to trade Burelson for Mario but we need a slot reciever and i personally don’t see one better in the league than Breaston. Leon is top 5 in the league at least and would be the ideal choice for me.
Breaston plays slot because of Boldin
I would assume this year he gets Boldins spot….speakinf of boldin is Demir playing for anyone in canada or AFL or something? Just intrested if anything happened to him.

That would be a case for evil laughing

a lil greedy aren't we?
haha there aren’t enough balls to go around to keep 2 of the top 5 wide outs in the game happy. Atleast not long term.

adrian petersen
and julius peppers on defence …we should of had these draft picks anyway if insane clowne posse front man matt millen wasn’t running things
marc hoople
whoa whoa whoa
if the Lions had drafted Peterson, that would have been in place of CJ. Whether or not we’d prefer CJ to AD seems like the subject of a different post.
And also
Peppers was taken second overall, and we had the third pick, so there was no possible way he could have been a Lion, so… yeah.
The question was who would you POACH off of another team not draft!
On O it would be 1 of 2 guys Jake Long at LT or Fitz from Arizona. And I would take Jake over Fitz. On D I think I would take Troy from the Steelers without thinking twice, the guy is a game changer hands down the best safety in the game today, he makes the whole unit look better than what they are. I don’t care about age I want a playmaker on D and Troy is that.
How many lumps you want Doc?
Yeah Rick I think we should have sold the farm to get him as well.
But there was only a small handful of us that wanted Berry ahead of Suh and I really didn’t care which 1 it was as long as it was 1 of those 2.I wasn’t joking up above I really feel that in the next 2 to 4 years we are going to be arguing over Delmas and Berry as the top 2 safety’s in the league and It’s going to be very bias around here.

Yep

Agreed.
Sigh.
"We lost!" Delmas yelled at reporters. "What you want? What you got to ask me?"
Delmas stared at reporters defiantly.
"That’s what I thought,"
"It's a hard division," Delmas said. "It's very big, but football is football. You've got to strap it up and go out there and play and that's what we plan on doing."
