Thursday Notes: Kevin Smith Headed to PUP List for Training Camp?

  • The Lions released Jahi Word-Daniels on Wednesday.
  • Dan Graziano reports that the Rams are still the favorites to land Oshiomogho Atogwe.
  • The reason the Lions wait until right before training camp to sign their draft picks is because it essentially gives them extra roster spots to use during OTAs and minicamps since rookies don't count against the 80-player limit until they're under contract.
  • Tom Kowalski thinks it's likely that Kevin Smith will start training camp on the PUP list and that he could still be on the PUP list come the regular season, which would force him to miss the first six weeks of action.
  • New special teams coordinator Danny Crossman's philosophy, as described by Nick Harris, is to "attack."
  • A few Lions players got golf lessons the other day. Gosder Cherilus could use some more practice, as he almost launched a shot at his Escalade.
  • According to Greg Cosell, the creator of NFL Match-Up, "[Matthew] Stafford is a more gifted passer than [Mark] Sanchez."
  • Calvin Johnson recently said in a radio interview that "it's a privilege to be (in Detroit)."
  • DeDe Dorsey gets teased about being on HBO's Hard Knocks last year when he played for Cincinnati.
  • Unsurprisingly, statistics show that the Lions stink at defending deep passes.
  • Philadelphia's Marlin Jackson ruptured the Achilles tendon in his right leg during an OTA earlier this week. He really just can't catch a break.
  • Former Lion Dewayne White was the first overall pick of the UFL Draft. Fellow ex-Lions Ronald Curry, Demarcus Faggins, and Melvin Fowler were also selected.

I think K.Smith on PUP

is the best thing for him and the team.

Kevin Jones came back too quick and the coaches allowed it….

Hopefully Best, Morris, and Brown are capable enough...

that it will not matter and Kevin can get healthy. If he comes back at 100% in week 7 or 8, I would much rather see that than see him get hurt again early on.

Oh you didn't know?? You're ass better CALLLLLLLL SOMEBODY!!!!!

The Lions are reportedly taking a “hard look” at free agent O.J. Atogwe while waiting for his price tag to drop.

Atogwe’s salary demands are said to be “extremely high,” which explains why the Rams are still considered the frontrunners to sign him. The Lions have a major need opposite Luis Delmas, so they could get serious about Atogwe if he’s forced to drop his asking price.

LQQK for 1 of these 3 to be a Lion

1) Larry Johnson With Westbrook about to sign ,and Willie Parker the starter ,Johnson would cost a 3/ 4 th round pick
2) Jerious Norwood (Atlanta) hes the 3rd back in a LOADED backfield . 4 th round pick
3) Marion Barber (Dallas) Cowboys trying to get “more expolsive backs”: the ball ..Barber would be a 3rd round pick
Lions have already talked to these teams, because they were PUPing K.Smith from day 1.They were just waiting to see how draft fell, and if they annouced it ,team wouldve drove asking price ( for RBs-Lions wanted)
1 of these three will be here BEFORE CAMP

agree

We drafted a RB in the first round for a reason. We also have Morris, a capable #2, and Brown too.

I’m looking forward to a Best-Smith duo for a long time to come. In the meantime, we have plenty of RB’s already, so K.Smith can take the time he needs to get healthy.

Hey that's a timeout, I can play right? yeah, get me--get the F-- Help me up...I can throw the ball if you need me to throw the ball...

And DeDe Dorsey

Who they gave a three-year deal too, correct? (Not that contracts mean all that much in the NFL, but still)

My two favorite teams are the Tigers and Brewers. Drunk tigers. That sounds about right.

+1

Look for one of these QBs to be in camp…

Culpepper, Harrington, or Garcia…. we can’t just go with what we have.

lions stink at defending the deep pass

The short pass, screen pass, PA pass, and the Run. Hope that is all about to change

Where does ralph come up with this stuff?

I agree that the Lions will probably not get Atogwe. I am still not sure I want him myself. i agree with what i saw smurfy say yesterday on another thread….ROME WAS NOT BUILT IN A DAY!!!!! LMAO He hit the nail right on the head when he said only baseball teams can really be fixed in one year through free agency.
I think we will for the most part stand pat for the rest of this offseason and truth be told i think thats a good thing. Let the guys we have brought in gel a little before we decide to start breaking the bank on any more free agents.
I am almost sure that we have a couple diamonds in the rough in our secondary. Yes, they may take some time to develop. But considering the state that Millen left this team in, can we really expect anything better than what we have already seen from Mayhew?
Mayhew has had exactly two offseasons to make this team better. And only one regular season to see what his product can do on the field.
I know its asking a lot of the fanbase to have some patience..but thats what we have to do here guys. I know most of you already get that. But apparently some of our baseball fan friends do not…LOL
Building a great football team takes time and a lot of careful calculating. I believe that Mayhew is doing the best he can to do just that.
And i agree…we do NOT need another RB in even a small way. Even if Kevin Smith never comes back.

It's just that.

He “comes up with” this stuff. Pulls it out of thin air just to get everyone talking.

well said

its not just about names and how much money you spend. Winning is a team effort and everyone needs a place. think of it as a 30 piece puzzle everything has to match and fit correctly or it will never be completed. Thats what we have to do not every starting saftey or linebacker or running back will complement are game or are team we have to find the ones that do. The team has gone over a major turnover in two years it will take time for them to gel as one and the ones who don’t won’t last.

Detroit Lions DE Jason Hunter could be on the roster bubble during training camp because of the defensive ends the team has added during the offseason, reports Tom Kowalski, of MLive.com.

what why??

He was only DE we had last year that could both pass rush and defend the run

The beginning of the end of the misery

I HOPE thats not true

Hunter really impressed me last year still young yet too. We really need to try and keep him around I think incase someone gets hurt or we need a fresh set of legs at DE

Feelin bad for Marlin

Man Marlin Jackson was a beast at Michigan. I feel that without all these injuries he’d be in the top 10-15 corners in the league. It just sucks that he cant stay healthy its definatly getting to make or break time if he doesnt play next year i doubt he will have any future in the NFL. Which really sucks because these days michigan needs anything they can get in the NFL for people to remember and respect what a great football program we have. (Leon Hall and Sir Charles are holdin it down tho.)

JAB

I hate bitch fraud

If he don’t get fired at the end of this season I am seriously considering changing teams…thats how much I hate him I will always love the blue but I cannot root for this guy. I never wanted him to be are coach in the 1st the place. Rumors floating around the Big Ten might go after Texas if that ever happened you can garuntee they wil embarass michigan at this point they have a few kids I like but the HC is a joke…(one of thos dennis miller nobodys laughing jokes) I think your giving Tom a little to much credit there Michigan has had ALOT of great players over the years and some of them still contribute to the school and community.

Oh I just meant for recruiting purposes and giving the NFL a current name from University of Michigan

For me the two biggest names in football right now from the maize and blue are Brady and Woodley. Hall is great but just does not receive the press those other two guys do. And for some reason Charles has never gotten his due, he might be the greatest DB to ever play at U of M and that is saying a lot.
