Changing My Tne
I was, and I think most were, before the draft skeptical of taking Best at 34, let alone trading up for him...
But since the draft I have really gotten on board with it. I am really starting to think he could be a heck of a weapon and other than CB, I I can't think of a possible thing I would want more than a home run hitter in the backfield.. as much as I still like and support Kevin Smith.
What do you guys think?

I was a Best hater befroe the draft..
now I am the driver of his bandwagon. “all aboard, next stop, the endzone.”

Thank You
I had to debate everyone on these goddamn boards about this. I think I was literally the ONLY Best supporter on POD. Despite the fact that nobody could ever come up with any genuine concerns about him besides durability, I argued I don’t know how many times over the guy.
And K-Smith and him be like two peas in a pod, their syles compliment each other very well.
I think it was me and you that went head to head on Best alot
In my defense I live 30 minutes from Berkeley. And I am tried of having the Pussifed Pac-10 shoved down my throat.
But I am man enough to admit you were dead on about Best. And I was blinded by my hatred.

Yes, I do remember
we had some good sparring sessions, for sure. I remember you saying you had actually seen him play in person, which was why I gave your argument more credibility then the average POD’er.
It was just crazy though, a lot of people would argue points that were just blatantly false. I can’t tell you how many times Smurf tried to convince me that Best couldn’t catch the ball, which seems ridiculous in hindsight.
It was fun though, it was like my initiation into POD. Good times.
Lets not start the "I told you sos" yet
There were more than a few of us who liked Best and thought he was an excellent fit for the Lion’s offence. Have to admit though, I don’t know anyone would have predicted that the Lions would trade UP for him. The consensus seemed to be that the Lions were going to trade DOWN. Shows how much we all know.

Just needed to see the tape
I, like Schwartz, was “aroused”.
I didn't hate the pick
During the POD mock draft, Best and Matthews were available at #34, and I prefered Matthews over Best. The real draft didn’t work out that way, and I’m happy the Lions chose Best although the concussions and the report of a neck muscle problem is a concern. If Jahvid didn’t get hurt and miss the last 4 or 5 games, he probably would’ve been the first RB taken instead of CJ Spiller.
I liked what the Schwartz had to say about the pick. It was something along the lines of “I’m a defensive coach, so I know what a nightmare it is to match up against that type of player.”

I wasn't a hater, just didn't want him.
But now he is on the team and one of us so i will back him 100% all day everyday. I think him and Smith will be sweet in the backfield together, i am curious to what the hell Jim will do with all the backs on the roster.
I'm more interested
to see who doesn’t make the cut. I’m sure we’re gonna hold onto Mo Morris as our third back, but I don’t think Aaron Brown and Dede Dorsey will both make the roster; it will be interesting to see that battle in camp. Dorsey is a better pure runner, but Brown is more versatile, which may give him an edge for the last RB slot. It’ll probably end up boiling down to who plays better on special teams.
I think we all expected to select a safety or corner when they traded
up. I remember thinking to myself the second they traded up that we were going to pick like Taylor Mays or a corner or something. When they picked Jahvid my first reaction was like why? But then I realized that this dude can light up the field at any second and at any given time they could give him a swing pass or set up a screen and he could be gone. I was even more happy when they drafted Amari in the 3rd because I thought they were going to pick a corner with that second 1st round pick even though most of the best corners were gone. I would say he has some of the highest “potential” with the rest of the offensive weapons we already had and those we picked up in the offseason.
Think about those 10 to 15 yard screen passes last season
with Morris and Smith. Those same plays with Best are going 20+.

or TDs
and the Lions did do a fine job on screens last year… I am sure that played into Linehan’s opinion of picking Best!

Best is going to really be exciting to watch, even right away.
I was on board with getting Best at #34 before the draft. The PoD favorite, if I remember, was Kyle Wilson, who ended up going one spot earlier than Best. He would have been a good player to trade up for too, but I think Best will have a bigger impact.
Hey that's a timeout, I can play right? yeah, get me--get the F-- Help me up...I can throw the ball if you need me to throw the ball...
tape
my cousin forced me to watch film of this guy a few weeks before the draft. i was really against taking an RB this high, given our needs, but I absolutely fell in love. he has cheetah speed but more importantly changes direction on a dime and has great vision. give this guy a little day light and he is going to bend the field.
we will find ways to get the ball into this guy’s hands. he was the best offensive weapon available in the draft.
I don't know why
but everytime I see your pic, I get this song going through my head…

I liked the pick AFTER...
Ryan Mathews was gone. I admit, I wasn’t that on board with Best coming here because I didn’t think he fit what the Lions were trying to do. I felt that they were looking at more of a every down back, which I felt Mathews better represented.
Now, I see the logic in it all and I am very excited to see the kid show us his stuff. I guess where I changed my tune is whether or not he can be an every down guy. I’ll admit, I’ll be a little skeptical until he becomes that guy, but Schwartz thinks he can do it and that’s good enough for me.
I was in the same boat as you about the every-down back thing
I’ve been saying for awhile Kevin Smith would be the perfect 3rd down back like a Kevin Faulk or Chester Taylor. He’s a great receiver and blocker. He could be the 4th qtr finisher, too. Let the defense chase Best around all game, then send in Smith to pound it out. Or vice-versa
Picking Jahvid Best can really open alot of different offensive possibilities for all the RBs. I guess that falls into the logic part of your comment lol

But fellas
how many teams in the league actually use one guy as an every down back? It’s pretty damn hard to find a team nowadays that doesn’t use a RB tandem. The days of one guy carrying the load has come to a close. It’s not like Ryan Matthews is going to shoulder the entire load in San Diego, there’s a reason why the Bolts brought back Darren Sproles.
Thats kinda the point of my comment lol

I know
that comment was more directed at Drew with the whole Matthews deal. Probably should’ve replied to his comment instead of yours. You’re right though, Smith and Best should compliment each other some kind of well.
Well, Mo...
I guess it comes down to whether or not you believe Smith or Best is the between-the-tackles type of first and second down guy. That’s where I struggled. Schwartz sees him as a Chris Johnson type guy. I didn’t necessarily see that with him… but then again, who am I to say? That was just my personal opinion of him.
When I thought of Best, I thought of a guy you use with a ton of motion, sweeps to the outside, lining up in the slot as a receiver… almost a Reggie Bush style. With Mathews, I saw someone you could send up the gut and get tough yards on all three downs… and the ability to catch the ball out of the backfield. Apparently, the Chargers saw that as well and took him at 12.
So I guess that Best will be the first and second down guy, but it remains to be seen how they will use him. As a traditional back? I hope so… because that’s what we need in addition to his playmaking skills. I agree with you Motown on the fact that it’s a two-back league, but typically, the styles of the two backs are different. I see the same skillset with Best and Smith aside from the immense speed and quickness of Best. So who goes between the tackles?
I'll add that...
I do have faith that Linehan and Schwartz will utilize him to the fullest needs of the team… and for that, I am immensly excited to watch him tear up the turf. Don’t misconstrue my comments… I am VERY glad we drafted him and ready to see what the kid is capable of doing. This time next year, I hope to be sitting here wearing my #44 jersey of the offensive ROFY!
And honestly
I think Best could be a front runner early on for Offensive Rookie of the Year. He’s going to get as many touches as any other rookie in the league. If he can stay healthy, it seems like a very realistic possibility. The only real competition I see right now would be Matthews and maybe somebody like a Dez Bryant. I would add Arrelious Benn, since he’ll probably come in as the Bucs no. 1 WR from day one, but since Josh Freeman is the guy throwing him the ball, I don’t see him putting up enough numbers to be in contention.
So who goes between the tackles?
J-Felton baby! Seriously though, I think Felton could/should get more opportunities to run the ball this year. He’s been underutilized thus far, and I’m hoping the coaching staff gives him a chance to be our proverbial battering ram.
I’m going to go ahead and assume Best isn’t going to be the next Chris Johnson, but they do have almost identical builds and play styles. But as you pointed out, Schwartz is really high on this guy, and he’s got more insight then any of us do. I guess we really won’t know for sure how good the kid can be until week one.
Between the lines
i thought that was Maurice Morris’s job when u need that typeof back

I dunno
I’m still on the fence about him. Of course, it wasn’t a bad pick. I thought he was the second best back in the draft after matthews, and the fact that we got him at 30 is a great value pick, but i wanna see him on the field b4 i make any real judgements.
The beginning of the end of the misery
I'm a fence-sitter, but I'm definitely on the band wagon now
Just him wearing a Lions jersey gets me to hop on.
RIP Robyn Bailey 1961 - 2010. I love you mum.
I didnt agree at first.....
But i just bought my Best jersey. Initially i thought we should get whats his name from Stanford.
I think we did the right thing though.
it will be interesting to see...
cause the Vikes took Gerhart. We’ll see if we moved up to take the “BEST” back.
My Bet is we DID!!!
Being a Spartan fan i remember seeing him play
and his name rang a bell meaning he did more damange than i wanted to recall. It was a couple of years ago but i was ok with it, but i thought we would have gone D.B. if we were going to trade up. So i quess the F.O. had a hunch about Kevin Smith. As it stands today I Like It. I just cant beleive our damn luck at running back or returner the last 5-6 years.
1 slice, 1 beer, 5 more reps.
I will reserve judgement till I see him play.
I love the idea of having a homerun hitter in the backfield, but a very interesting player.
Agreed Lead
Very interesting player for sure. Will he be like a Leon Washington?? Not sure but he will take the load off of K Smith a little but can he block as well as K SMith?? We need to wait and see how Schwartzy uses him.

This is a no-brainer
I don’t know now everyone was on the Kevin Smith bandwagon in the first place…I was on the whatever running back they picked bandwagon, then they traded up and picked Best…That was so genius and right away I knew Mayhew was the greatest thing that ever happened to the Lions since Barry….He would have never traded up to take Best if he didn’t think beyond a shadow of a doubt that we needed more help at RB than we did at CB… There was still some really good corners on the board and we took Best, so what does that tell you about Kevin Smith. Best is going to be way more than a Leon Washington, I think more of a Warrick Dunn or a 3 times better Reggie Bush at worst.
