Monday Notes: Terry Bradshaw Is A Big Fan Of Matthew Stafford

  • Can you feel it? We are just 11 days away from when players report to Allen Park for training camp, meaning we are 12 days away from the first practice. Right now we're still in the calm before the storm stage, but football is almost officially back.
  • Roger Goodell is going to visit seven camps during August, but Allen Park is not on his travel schedule. He did make a surprise appearance at the Ford Field practice last year, though, so it's possible he could pop in for an hour or two one day.
  • The Lions will not be punished for the fights that brought last month's minicamp to an early close.
  • Terry Bradshaw is not a fan of Jimmy Clausen, but he likes what he sees in Matthew Stafford
"I think (the Lions) are doing the right thing with (Stafford)," Bradshaw said. "He looks like the kind of guy who gets into it and shows he's mad. That's a guy (Stafford) whose leading them. I like him. I like him a lot. I like what he brings. (The Lions) still have a long way to go, but they're definitely on the right track."
I don't think there's any doubt that, on offense, this is already Stafford's team. He was a leader last year and as he gains more experience, his leadership will only get better and better.
  • Proof of that comes in the form of Martin Mayhew's recent praise of Stafford.
  • Drew Stanton likely won't be a Lion come this time next year, as we already knew.
  • Zack Follett went back to "Camp Elevation" for a shoot with ESPN The Magazine.
  • As Tom Kowalski pointed out, the Lions are interested in Chiefs safety Jarrad Page, but that doesn't mean that the Chiefs are interested in dealing him.
  • Chris Spielman apparently got the biggest cheer out of all the players being inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame at a rally for them last week.

The more I read about the things that Follett does

the more I am convinced that this guy is a marketing/self promoting genius. I mean what 7th round draft pick has had more print and air time than Follett. He knows how to play it his fans. Detroit is a blue collar type of city. The fans are mostly blue collar. Follett is a unbalanced, blue collar player. Put up a web site. Act alittle insane. Alittle off-the-wall. Next thing you know, you are a cult icon of the fans. I do believe that he his being genuine. And that is just who he is. But you do have to give the man props. For getting himself out there in the public’s eye.

yea he is definitely one of the more popular players

when he said “i am going to make 31 other teams pay for not draft me” is when he won most of the fans respect.. having a few screws lose helps as well..

not to meny 7th round picks have his fallowing… at least not that soon..

And Bradshaw just went up a couple of notches in my book

He jumped right over Steve Young. Young thought that Stafford should sit his rookie season. Because he was going to get sack 70 times and get himself killed.

Young hasn't kept up with the game....

And just relies on his previous experience. He needs to start studying the game more.

I knew the sacks were going to drop because of the change in coordinator. Most of the sacks came from indecision (hold the ball too long)… either Fatty McGee or Stafford… or Stanton…. All 3 played like rookies last year.

I take that as a disclaimer from Bradshaw

If you remember a few years back he also like Joey “I hear Footsteps” in his first 2 years of play. I can still remember watching FOX pre-game shows thinking well If Terry likes him he is going to be something good.

yeah but his stats were solid in his first two seasons

But he just did not have the heart or desire to put in the work needed to get over that hump. I still think if Joey would have been drafted by a team that had a offense to fit his skill set. He could of been an okay QB.

Like David Carr?????

I still want to beleave that the Lions killed what could of/should have been a damn fine QB when I/we talk about Joey. If they would have put a front line in front of him like this front office is trying to do, things may have been different for Joey. I can still think of how happy I was the day we drafted him, and I thought then, OK now we have a quarterback that can compete now go get him a line to block for him, But we all know the path that Millen took WR after WR after WR and no defence to speak of either, that will kill a quarterback everytime.

Joey was not the pick of HC Mornhinweg

or of Mooch either. Joey was a drop back QB with a strong arm. Not a smart dink and dunk passer that he needed to be in a west coast offense. The sad thing is the we are debating the merits of Joey Harrington as a quarterback. When does traing camp open again?

almost killed...

He did almost get himself killed against the Browns. However, the moxie he showed in coming back into the game and throwing the winning touchdown pass proved something to a lot of people.

yeah but those are the moments that will live on in our memories

Just like the play when Young lost his helmet. Or, the Farve bomb to Sharpe in the playoffs. You have to be on the field to make those plays. You can’t be worried about sacks and that sort of stuff.

+1

I never seen a QB win the game on the bench and scared to get hit. Stafford is a rare breed, losing and giving up aren’t apart of his make up. He will lead this team to alot more victories than loses and the winning starts this year…

Detroit Lions

Well typical Zack being Zack the kid is nutso…

Terry i always did like you and figured you to knew what you were talking about, this time you are dead on about Stafford.

Damn it would be nice to have Chris Spielman playing MLB for us again, I think that Page will be in this week or at least b4 trainning camp…

I said this several times but can we give Angelo Crowell a look, really can’t be any worse than what we have on the weakside and i’d rather have him than Bulluck.

Am I the only one who doesn't care about Drew Stanton??

He has had time to play and quite frankly he sucked. I never understood the pick anyway, especially a 2nd rounder!!! I know he’s a local guy etc. but I think (gulp I never thought I would say this) Coletto was right when he said Stanton would embarrass himself by playing.

It's hard to give the local guy the door but sometimes you have to do it

Stanton is young enough that he could still improve enough to be a viable backup in the NFL, but if he can’t do any better than he did last year, he just doesn’t belong, even as a 3rd stringer.

cut Stanton

Hey…we could cut Stanton and sign JaMarcus Russell. We could list him as QB/DL. He’s about that size right? I’m of course kidding.

by BBlades on Jul 19, 2010 9:07 PM EDT up reply actions

It was great to see him get his chance, but he's more then proved he isn't NFL materiel. Lets let him go...

I think he's the perfect 3rd QB....

That being said… I would welcome the competition.

What I won’t do is shit on a player based on a Millen decision. (Stanton, Dizon, etc)…. With the current staff; if these players didn’t deserve to be on the team, they wouldn’t be.
