Sophomore slump

I was thinking, after reading Gym Schwartz's post about Stafford , what about the reverse. Which NFC North sophomore is most likely to have a slump?

Star-divide

I'll start with Louis "The Predator"  Delmas. He had a decent year with 94 total tackles(65 solo and 29 assisted), 1 sack, 2 picks(1 for a d), a fumble recovery for a td, and a safety. He is the only one not to be involved with the pro bowl.

Next up is Clay Matthews. He had 50 total tackles(36 solo and 14 assisted),10 sacks, and 1 "forced" fumble, where he ripped the ball out of Adrian Peterson's hand, that he scored his only TD with. He played in the pro bowl as a late replacement.

Switching to offense you have Percy Harvin. He had 60 receptions for 790 yards and 6 TDs, 7 rushing attempts for 38 yards, and 42 kick returns for 1156 yards with 2 TDs. He was voted Offensive Rookie of the Year and was a late addition to the pro bowl but due to "injury concerns" did not participate.

His replacement was Johnny Knox. Knox had 45 receptions for 527 yards and 5 tds,32 kick returns for 927 yards with 1 TD. In the pro bowl he had 4 kick returns for 103 yards.

Louis should benefit from the opposing QB having less time so less likely to make smarter plays and avoid him. On the other hand his numbers may be hard to duplicate so it may look like a slump.  Knox really wasn't that spectacular so he should be able to repeat his production. Percy Harvin may lose some touches but should still be an integral part of the offense. I'm going with Clay Matthews with Aaron Kampman headed to Jacksonville he won't have a good end to take care of the tackle. If you take away the 10 sacks and his numbers don't look all that great.

What do you guys think?

Knox

His Qb has to step it up. He wasn’t so outstanding that he strikes feat in a corner. I think Harvin is a bigtime playmaker and could become one of the best WR in the NFL in time. Louis should be better with the new D line but with the way the predator plays I am more worried about a bob sanders type injury than a slump. I think Clay will be ok without Kampman he was hurt last year and Clay did fine without him. It may not be a fair judgment but all of the Matthews have been more than good players I think his sophmore season will be improved which is a scary thought.

I also have to go with Knox.

I didn’t think he was all that last year.

tricky question

will knox repeat his 2009 numbers? probably. as such, he shouldn’t really be viewed as being in a slump. but anyone who expects more out of him will probably be disappointed.

Toss up for me

between Clay and Knox. A reciever is more likely to have ups and downs with a younger QB throwing to him. And take in account the there is a new offense in place.

But Clay will be missing some help. And he is no longer a unknown. But I guess in the end I think it will be Knox.

What does the opposite side OLB have to do with Matthews? Maybe Jolly being out indefinitely will play a part in him having less of an impact but Kampman wouldn’t have all that much to do with it especially with GB thinking they have a good replacement. And why did you put forced in parentheses? Grammatically that would mean you’re implying it wasn’t forced.

I voted Knox, though he could up his game with the new system and Chicago lacking a lot of real talent at WR.

When i think forced

I think of a guy losing the ball because of a hard or well placed hit. Clay ripped the ball out. That’s all I’m saying.

Cool

I think it’s kinda odd. I mean when the ball gets knocked loose it’s more often a case of the ball carrier holding the football like a loaf of bread than someone hitting him like the fist of an angry God jarring it loose. Straight ripping it out of the guy’s arms seems harder to me I guess.

It was impressive.

Im going with percy...

Just because I want to see him slump…Johnny will be more involved in the offense with Martz coming to Chi town, so I actually see him putting him better numbers than last year…Mathews in an animal and the only player in the North that doesn’t play for Detroit that I like and Delmas just won’t flat out flop, knock on wood.

I chose Mathews

Mostly because the Packers secondary is 1 year older and I can’t see Woodson having the same kind of year he had last year, I just don’t with the loss of Jolly ol’ nick it is 1 less guy in the rotation up front for the Pack. Now with Delmas I agree with what all of you already put up top, a better line and what should be a better set of corners(better than last year) I can’t see why he can’t put up #‘s similar to last year if not better because I’m not sold on our LB’s yet to young and inXperienced, so I actually see his #‘s going up pending injuries. With Percy his hole season rests on Favre’s return and staying healthy enough to play a whole year. And even if I can’t stand him the guy has proved decade after decade that he just doesn’t miss games, So I can’t see it being Harvin, actually see his #‘s being 3rd best in the division this year, behind Megatron/Greg Jennings in no particular order. Now Knox is a wild card here, cause he really didn’t put up any WR #‘s so it will be hard for him to take a step backwards, especially with Martz’s system. The one problem I have with Knox is he does not have an NFL body for a WR, he is kind of small when you see him on the field and he had Hammie issues last year, and I’d expect him to have the same if they keep running him on GO routes to try and free up the middle of the field for Hester, which I think Martz will try and do. If I had to actually pick a guy primed for a soph slump, it would be Staff because alot of QB’s have them in the NFL as we have stated a few times on here it’s the 3rd year that QB’s and WR’s usually explode on to the scene. But since he wasn’t on the list I chose Mathews.

I kept Matt off

Because I wanted to focus mostly on just one guy per team and Louis seemed to be the one to have a bigger drop off just based on their numbers from last year.

I'm going with Clay

He really outstripped expectations last year, and living up to the big numbers he produced won’t be easy. Even a small reduction in sacks, such as 6, will be seen as a disappointment. Plus, teams will have a better chance of honing in on Matthews now that he’s made himself known as a key defender.

Mattews #s

Remember Matthews didn’t start until the 5th game so I would expect his numbers to improve just from playing 16 games.
