Lions Fans' Rewards Are Coming

Projections are coming out (as to be expected) now that training camp is approaching.  Of course, after training camp, more projections will emerge.  But how do our Lions shape up in the minds of so-called experts?

  1. Shutdown Corner - Detroit Lions 2010
  2. Bleacher Report
  3. Associated Content from Yahoo - Todd Pfeifer

Those are just a few of the ones I haven't seen floated around just yet on this site.   I even made my own projection earlier in the month where I said the Lions could go 7-9, admitting that it was a bit optimistic.  The best projection I have seen so far from people in the media is 6-10. The lowest I have seen is 3-13.  So, it would be safe to say we should all be expecting a 5-11 season, perhaps.   Maybe 4-12.  It just all depends on how it all comes together.

We as Lions fans need to continue to have what I have seen referred to as "biblical patience."   Matt Millen screwed the team up royally...taking us to the lowest of lows.   But look how far we've come mentally and talent-wise since just two years ago.  New franchise QB who has the league's respect, two really good WRs, our running game is looking up, the defense is shaping up, and we are talking about 6-10 seasons while the team itself is talking playoffs (which I would hope they would...but it shows the mentality).

We have a lot to be thankful for right now.  And it resides in the front office with Mayhew, Lewand, and Jim Schwartz.  Linehan and Cunningham are here for another year and hopefully will continue to stay and build.  We got rid of Stan Kwan FINALLY.

It might be another rough year record-wise.   But for me, we could go 3-13 or 4-12 and I would content enough if I could see growth on the field.  If we are competitive and making a statement, the record doesn't matter this year; because I think next year is when we make the statement of all statements....that we have arrived and we're taking the Black and Blue division from Cutler cry-babies, Favre wanna-bes, and 98 year old quarterbacks that can't admit it's time to call it a career.  Packers, Bears, and Vikings fans couldn't handle the bad years we've endured.  The major majority of them would abandon their teams.   I see it all the time living in the Chicago area.  They cry and whine over spilt milk.  Cutler has a bad game, and they're calling for his head...and then he goes out and wins a game, and he is suddenly their favorite player.  It's unbelievable sometimes.

I'm good with being patient and letting the team rebuild THE RIGHT WAY....because I know that means more permanent success in the future.

Very good

Overall, sweet post. I do think we can have a 6-10 easily and, I’m all out of kool aid.
You’re right about the other north teams being fair weather. Estatic when they when and
calling for heads when they lose. I live in Queen’s land but, lived my first 30 years in MI.
They cannot endure what we have been through. However, unlike us, they are used to
having winning seasons. Will we be the same once the roar is restored? I’ve seen the
worst in fans here and, I hope we never travel down that road! We who have stayed faithful,
have learned the lesson of patience. Never lose it.

Expectations don't produce!

good read

good post…..and I agree, I honestly don’t think we’ll be winning a whole lot of games this year due to the tough schedule we pulled (thanks NFL) – but I GUARANTEE we will be much more competitive this year. One of my friends who is a Bears fan was arguing w/ me about this over a couple beers on Sat, and I guaranteed him that the Lions offense will put up more points and yards than his damn Bears this year. I really want to beat the damn Bears twice this year. If we finish third in the NFC North above the Bears, I’ll be a happy man. That’s honestly my goal for this year, to finish ahead of the Bears. We’re heading in the right direction boys, let’s just keep the ship pointed in the right direction and we’ll get there eventually. Can’t wait for the season to start

I've noticed this as well

I can’t count how many times this year I’ve heard the same description of the Lions: “A team who’s a ways from contending yet, but definitely on the right track.”

Mayhew and Schwartz’s moves have been noticed, and the haters don’t have the ammunition they used to. When we start winning games, just fucking watch all the bandwagon fans…

No doubt about it....

….it will piss me off more than anything seeing them jump on the Lions’ bandwagon. And it will make the city look bad, most likely…because I don’t think people notice the strong fan base the Lions have regardless of the recent losing….they’ll simply notice everyone “all of a sudden” loving the Lions.

I hope I’m wrong.

I agree to a point.

I think it depends on how the Lions “fans” have carried themselves.
On this site, we are in the company of people who are among the most dedicated and hard-core fans in all of sport. If someone was a big fan, and say, didn’t watch the few final games of the season last year in all of their Culpepper glory, I wouldn’t really blame them. If anything, we have a team that you can say “I don’t blame you” for not watching a lot of Lions football in the past couple years. This year it’s likely we’re going to be competitive, and we’re certainly going to see more full houses at Ford Field because of it.
However, if you’re talking about the kind of fans (some of my friends included) who’ve done nothing but talk shit about the team for the past decade that will certainly come back to the team while it’s winning while claiming that they’ve always been big fans…well, fuck that.

by TX Lion on Jul 21, 2010 11:45 PM EDT up reply actions

That's exactly what I mean.

I’m talking about the ones who have no interest in following the team unless they’re good. They disassociate completely until the team is good again.

Well it will be sorta like when the Tigers and Pistons started to put together

winning seasons. Out on the West Coast. I do not see alot of Pistons or Tigers merchandise. You know jerseys and what not. But after the Pistons won their championship in ’04. The Nike Town started to carry a bunch of thier stuff. And then when the Tigers when to the World Series. I began to see Tigers hats everywhere. Especially, the Tigers baseball hats. I have notice alot of people wearing them. I think more of a “fashion” statement. Then the fact they are Tiger fans. It is kinda weird for me to see. And now recently, a few Lions hats have been floating around out here. No jerseys yet. But I have seen a couple of people wearing the Lions hats.

It bugs me...

When I go up to someone wearing a Tigers hat, and say.

Me: “How bout that game the other day? Can you believe the #’s Miggs is putting up?”

Guy w/ hat on: " UH, What,"

Me: “I saw your hat, are you a Tigers fan?”

Guy w/ hat on: “Uh, Oh…. ha ha oh My name is Dave, I just liked the hat.”

Good Job DoucheBag Dave, now I wanna spit on you.

Wow, where did you find that.

This guy ranks the top 10 gang affiliated fitted hats. First, every gang he links them to is from Chicago. Then he includes teams like the Astros? and Twins? but not the NY Yankees?

by j16941 on Jul 24, 2010 4:33 PM EDT up reply actions

There are always going to be wagon jumpers...

look at the Saints… how many “fans” came out of the woodwork when they won the SB last year? I had a person that I’ve known my whole life tell me that they are a lifelong Saints fan (which is total BS- female, from Northern Michigan and NEVER followed football before in her life)- and I called her out on it. Always nice to see the only gear from a “fan” is the SB Champs shirt & hat. Just ask them a few questions or ignore them completely.

Before last season, I retired my Lions hat to upgrade to the new logo. I was with my 6 year old daughter in the store, and she asked me why I was a Lion fan. I said because I have always been a Lions fan, and I grew up watching great players like Spielman, Sanders, Blades, Moore, Perriman, Schlessenger, Simms and many others. I bought her a pink Lions hat (which she wanted, but she likes the kitty on the front).

As much as I’d like to see winning season, the Lions need to draft in the top 10 next year. There are still too many holes to fill (corner, O-line, safety, LB). One more draft from Mayhew & Co. and the transformation could be getting to the want stage versus the need stage. IF there is football in 2011, then the Lions should finish better than .500 and make the playoffs.

by Detroitfantc on Jul 21, 2010 9:27 AM EDT reply actions

We don't need a top 10 pick

There will be plenty of good players throughout the first round. The middle-bottom of the first round is where the best value is for the money anyway.

Hey that's a timeout, I can play right? yeah, get me--get the F-- Help me up...I can throw the ball if you need me to throw the ball...

Twon, as usual

Another awesome write up rec from me

"I’d probably get arrested because football’s my only time I get to go out there and hit people as hard as I can, and it’s legal," Follett said. "I need that once a year."

by Rick Chaffee on Jul 21, 2010 5:15 PM EDT reply actions

I rec'd it ...

I don’t know about everyone here. Unless we have injuries happen, I would not be happy unless we got 5 wins. If we just get 5 and are competing in the rest, I would be happy. I am not putting a limit on this team because of the talent. But, due to many question marks and such, I will say with the talent they added they should at least get 5 wins. I am hyped up ! I am just trying to keep in mind that it is a growth process, this is only Matt’s 2nd yr, injuries happen, lots of players playing in a new system for the 1st time…the list goes on and I can’t expect for all of these to go right. That being said, I love what we are doing, the direction we are going in and how we are doing it. I see us building a Dynasty and have the fun is the ride there !!!!!

maybe sooner than you think, friend,

I’m known amognst my friends as a mad Lions fan-addict, but I see a ‘definite’ 6-8 wins (Bears,Rams,Redskins, Bills, Bucs, one more divisional game /hopefully sweeping the Bears/ and one or two upsets) with a very real possibility of getting “on a roll” and seeing the post season (likely as a wildcard contender) THIS YEAR!!!

2003

We beat the Packers 22-14.

We literally have not even been competitive since. We won three in a row from 1997-1999 though.

Is That True?????

I believe the last time we beat the Pack at Lambeau was in 1991. I don’t remember beating them at all in the 2000’s. The curiosity has the best of me. I’ll look that up.
