Around SBN: Knicks Beat Lakers With Familiar Strategy

The Lions Schedule

I was taking another long look at the Lions schedule for this year.  Initially as the schedules were released, I was a bit worried that it was a very rough schedule.   And at further glances, it is a tough schedule to face for a team re-building like ours.  But I think there is some promise in it as well.

ESPN just released its pre-season rankings, which I know are not the do-all, say-all of the way the season will pan out.  However, it is a general glimpse into the way teams are shaping up in the offseason. Out of the 16 games we play, half of them are against teams in the top 10...two of which being in our division (Packers, Vikings).  Our Thanksgiving Day game is against the Patriots, who rank #9 on this list.  We also face the Cowboys and Jets who are in the top 10 as well (4 and 7 respectively).

However, we also face 5 teams in the bottom 12, including the Bears twice.  These are not guaranteed wins by any stretch of the imagination, but they are opportunities for the Lions to shine more than others.  Out of those 5 teams, 3 of them are the bottom 3...the Rams, Bills, and Bucs.  All three of those should be victories, but the Rams beat us last year at home for their only win of the season.  So, it is not a given.

2010 Opponents:

What I would give for some surprise upsets and a major divisional stance by the Lions.   If we could hold our own, go 3-3 in the division, we could easily go 6-10 or 7-9.   Easily.  But it's all about that defense.

I voted 9-7 without Kool-Aid

I just have feeling about this years team. I think the 2 TE set will allow them to chew up alot of the clock and keep opposing offenses off the field. The best way to improve our defense is by allowing fewer opportunities against them. By shortening the game and keeping the score close we have the play makers to win it come crunch time. In the early 90’s the Lions were unbeatable at home we need to make Ford Field a feeding place for our Lions to devour our foes. They need to play with the attiude " Your not coming to my house and taking food from the mouth my family" and fight with every fiber of their being.

What games do you see us winning?

Are we going to beat the Patriots at home? I’m just curious where the 9 is coming from.

If we only win 1 game

I’d want it to be the pats.

If you go through enough contingencies, I could see it

Bears-
Peppers plays like he just got paid, the Martz offense fails due to lack of talent to run it, their pass defense stays shitty, and we take advantage of all of the above.
Eagles-
Kolb spends most of his day on his backside and we score just enough on that defense to win.
Rams-
Well, yea, if you can’t count on that one, what the hell could you count on?
Giants-
Playing them on the road…yikes. Maybe if their defense stays crappy, we might be able to outscore them.
Skins-
McNabb doesn’t play like he did when he played us last time.
Bills-
This is my pick for worst team in the league, even more so than the Rams.
Pats-
Welker, Moss, Brady and co. vs. our questionable pass defense… yea, i just don’t see a likely contingency there that would result in a W. What’s your rationale?

The 12th man will be a huge factor

The Pats will be coming off a rough two weeks after playing the Steelers and the Colts and will have short work week to prepare. I think after running up and down the field against Manning their defense will be playing on tired legs and Jahvid Best will have career day.

We have the excellent lead in of a trip to Dallas

I hope you are right. Hey, the last time we played the colts they almost overlooked us and let us sneak out with a win. Maybe the Pats will too.

Hummmm

Bears (Cutler on his back, moaning back to huddle)
Eagles (Kolb is not Mcnabb)
Rams ( Bradford will have broken bones)
Redskins (Close but, even Mcnabb isn’t Mcnabb anymore)
Bills (Pleeeeease)
Bucs (2nd Pleeeeease)
Vikes (Favre will be injured/beat up by this point)
If the new D line really produces, we could take one from
the Pack as well.
7-9/8-8

6-10

Most picked 5-11 but I believe they will beat the Giants… thats the only difference…

Basically everyone agrees that they wont beat Vikes, Pack, Jets, Dolphins, Cowboys, Pats…. to that is 8 losses right there….

So, the Giants, Redskins and Bears are the ones people have in question…. I think they will beat the Giants and the Bears at home and lose to the Redskins.

If we get swept by the Bears, lose to STL, the Bills, or the Bucs… I will be pissed.

5-11

With a rookie QB I think are chances of beating the rams greatly increase. I have been unimpressed with Freeman to date I think the Bucs is a great oppertunity. If we get the Bears twice and the bills that puts us at 5. 6 or 7 wins ins’t a reach though if we can get a upset or 2.

I wanted to go higher, but I wanted to say we would win 7 last year. I am hedging my initial feeling based on my past overconfidence at this point in the season.

BTW – what was Detroits rank in that list?

by ATL Lion on Jul 28, 2010 4:26 PM EDT reply actions

im pretty sure Detroit...

is no.29, with only Buffalo, Tampa Bay, and St. Louis behind them.

by lions_sucker on Jul 28, 2010 5:22 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, 29.

They put the Browns ahead of us. :-P

To be fair

The Browns did finish strong last year.

Do I think they are better than us? Hell no. We beat them last year when our secondary decided to sit the game out and we would beat them this year whether they have “pick machine” Delhomme throwing or Colt “shit. is that Suh? I forgot I have a dentist appointment today, bye” MCoy

5-11 and man I hope I'm wrong!

My process was this: Bucs, Bills we win. Redskins,Dolphins and 2 Bear games we win two of those (4 wins) and we upset someone else (35-28 over Pats?) = 5-11. Just don’t see us magically winning games we normally don’t win. However, As I have said before. We willl surge next year and win 10 to 12 games. Go Lions!

Do you think the Lions could use a 47 yr old 220lb cornerback that runs a 5.02 40 that will take your head off?.........will play for beer!

by LonnieLion on Jul 28, 2010 8:23 PM EDT reply actions

I just want Suh to sack Favre so hard....

….that he seriously considers retirement this time. In Ford Field. Followed by the chants of tens of thousands yelling SUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUH!!

GO LIONS! RESTORE THE ROAR!

by Twon82 on Jul 29, 2010 1:01 AM EDT reply actions

I said 8-8

I could see us anywhere between 6-10 and 10-6 really. One game I think we have a good chance to win is against Dallas. If you look at their record in November the last 5 years it’s horrific. Another thing is that they are not a super young team on D, especially in the middle, and they will probably have some injuries by that time in the year.

by WestsideLionsFan on Jul 29, 2010 2:11 AM EDT reply actions

+1

I`m hoping for 8-8, and Dallas is pretty bad in November so that might be a suprise as i think N.Y.G. might be a suprise. Play with Pride on Thanksging Day, maybe. But i am really looking foreward to December and January 2nd. That is going to 5 weeks of tryouts, because you know a bunch of guys will not be back next year. And with 3 home games against the divison and 2 road games in Florida back to back, that is going to be 5 good weeks of football. Heck we might have a late game if we can ruin the party for Miami or Minnesota.
