Thursday Notes: Deal With Ndamukong Suh Reportedly 'Moving Slowly'

  • According to Jim Schwartz on Twitter, there will be two practices on Sunday and Monday, but only one practice on Tuesday. That one practice on Tuesday, however, will be the first day of full pads. A couple days ago, Schwartz mentioned that training camp will get underway on Saturday with a conditioning test in the morning and the first practice in the afternoon.
  • Some interesting contract news from Adam Schefter:
Word on street: Some hiccups on way to a Rams-Sam Bradford deal. Lions-Suh deal moving slowly. Broncos getting close to signing Tim Tebow.
The Lions still have up until Saturday morning to get Ndamukong Suh and Jahvid Best signed if they don't want them to miss any time, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a little concerned at this point.
  • Schwartz believes the holdup with Suh is partly because of the holdup with the Rams and Sam Bradford.
  • Speaking of Schefter, ESPN's training camp tour will take him to Allen Park on Sunday.
  • Umpires will no longer be positioned in the defensive backfield, where they were vulnerable to colliding with players. Instead they will be 12-15 yards off the line of scrimmage in the offensive backfield. That puts them parallel with the referee, which will be a pretty big change, especially when it comes to spotting the ball.

On the umpires

I ref highschool football, so I have a little knowledge in that area. I think that move is great. I’ve seen some umpires get clobbered. This shouldn’t create an issue for spotting the ball since its the headlinesman and linejudge (on the wings) that make the ball spot. The umpire shouldn’t even be looking at the ball since his first priority is to watch for holdings and illegal use of the hands, stuff like that.

It is a bit discouraging...

Especially since the guy said he doesn’t want 2 hold-out. Seems like they’re kinda waitin on Bradford 2 set the bar & goin from there. But, if it’s a money thing, maybe they should win some games of they don’t wanna pay high draft picks, or trade them if it’s that big of deal. Let’s get these guys on the field they could be the difference makers.

by LTownDown on Jul 29, 2010 12:52 PM EDT reply actions

Of course he said he didn't want to hold out

What do you expect the guy to say, “Yeah, I’m really looking forward to not attending camp.” At the end of the day though, like 95% of athletes, it’s all about the power of the dollar. If Suh took whatever offer the Lions have on the table right now, he would still instantly be one of the highest paid DT’s in the league. Instead, he’s decided to wait for Bradford to sign so that he can squeeze every possible dollar out of us.

If Suh misses even a single day of Camp I will be EXTREMELY disappointed in him. It’ll essentially mean he’s a liar; he could sign whatever contract the Lions are offering right now and be SET FOR LIFE, yet he’s trying to tack a couple million more dollars onto the guaranteed figure, proving that he’s just like the rest of these overpaid athletes. Sad.

This is a load of BS.

Nice to see you can make such sweeping judgments about a guy you’ve never met. Ndamukong is a great guy, much different than how you are attempting to paint him.

I understand being disappointed if he isn’t signed by the start of camp, I will be too, but maybe hold off on the character judgments when everyone who has ever known the guy has nothing but the best things to say about him.

by Grrranderson on Jul 30, 2010 8:09 AM EDT up reply actions

To an extent, maybe.

I agree that I should probably wait to go nuts until he actually misses camp. I’m just very frustrated with the whole situation. This guy is about to be the highest paid defensive player on the team, yet he’s waiting for Bradford so that he can get even more money. I realize it’s not his fault to an extent, and that he’s simply taking advantage of the way the system is set up, and has his agents in his ear telling him what he should and shouldn’t do; I guess I had just thought/hoped he was the kind of guy that would tell his agent “fuck those extra couple million, I’m going to be in camp on time.” Again, it’s possible he still is on time, but if Adam Schefter is right then it’s not looking very likely.

by motown313 on Jul 30, 2010 1:10 PM EDT up reply actions

Like you wouldn’t hold on a couple extra days for a couple more MILLION???? I don’t blame him one bit! If someone is willing to pay you X amount of dollars for your services, you are not overpaid. Besides, ever see a retired NFL lineman in his 50s or 60s? Trust me, they’ve earned their money with the abuse to their bodies.

by vanman on Jul 30, 2010 10:05 AM EDT up reply actions

Don't blame Condon

I know we don’t like the idea that the guy we just picked at #2 isn’t the role model we would like him to be, but we have to realize that Suh is the guy signing on the dotted line, not his agents. If Suh holds out it will be for one reason and one reason only; greed.

I just hope Suh understands the ramification of holding out in a blue collar state like Michigan; I, for one, will probably never look at him the same way, particularly after all of his “I swear I don’t want to hold out!” bullshit.

Maybe I’m overreacting seeing as how camp hasn’t started yet. I don’t know.

by motown313 on Jul 29, 2010 8:58 PM EDT up reply actions

I think you're overreacting

The contracts this year are more complex because of the possibility of no football in 2011.
I’m sure the money is allready agreed upon. Most contract hold-ups are over legalese language in the contracts.

Get it done, with or without Bradford

Tired of waiting, a holdout would just be a killer for this season.

[...]when Giants coach Steve Owen, a certified defensive genius, was asked how he planned to stop Nagurski, he said: "With a shotgun, as he’s leaving the dressing room."

With Suh

Already pledging a shitload of money for the Nebraska engineering program…. The Lions should be considering his philantropic donations as they’re negotiating.

by CLF on Jul 29, 2010 2:34 PM EDT reply actions

I don't think they should

The way I look at it, whatever money he’s pledged to Nebraska has absolutely nothing to do with us, and should be completely irrelevant in negotiations.

by motown313 on Jul 29, 2010 9:00 PM EDT up reply actions

Irrelevant?

I hardly think so. Character has a LOT to do with a person’s paycheck.

by CLF on Jul 30, 2010 11:00 AM EDT up reply actions

we need suh undercontract...I think with Dez and Mclain ,Best should be moving along already.

I agree with moving the umpires but I just know it will increase the amount of bad ball spots.

Need is too strong of a word U 2

Especially when we are talking about a DT, how many plays does he actually have to learn???? OK Suh here’s what you do. . . .that thing in front of you is called a “football” and the guy touching it is called a “center” . . .now here’s where it gets tricky when the “center” hikes the ball to the “quarterback” I want you to occupy as many guys as you can and still try to get who ever has that ball. Now look guys if we didn’t have Williams and SLH I would be more worried but we are talking about a monster of a DT coming out of collage and for SUH to miss a week or so isn’t going to destroy the chemistry that hasn’t even begun to start yet. If this hold out lasts for a couple of weeks then we should start to worry but until then I take it with a grain of Favre.

How many lumps you want Doc?

Him missing a couple days is not a big deal. Like you, I’ll start to worry when he actually starts to miss a couple weeks.

by vanman on Jul 30, 2010 10:06 AM EDT up reply actions

I wanted him but

He probably has a chance to start seeing as how we got Sims some months ago from them.

Looking for advice

I’ve pretty much decided on getting Gamepass, but what I can’t decide on is what package to get. I don’t have a lot of money so I’m looking for value. The two option I’m looking at are the Team subscription which gives me all the Lions games but that’s it for $199.99 (about $225 my bucks) while the other option is a monthly subscription to the whole shebang for $69.99 a month (or about $77). I’d like to get the monthly subscription, but I tend to think that’s just to much and doesn’t represent the value I’m looking for. What do you guys think?

RIP Robyn Bailey 1961 - 2010. I love you mum.

I think that's a crap load of money...

I don’t know much about it…but perhaps you could buy a slingbox for someone in the states and watch the games via the internet…and you’d also get to watch sports as well and other cable. Plus you could use it for as long as it’s relevant, and not just this season. I don’t know, just an idea, but it’s still quite expensive and could be difficult to coordinate.

by lions_sucker on Jul 29, 2010 8:33 PM EDT up reply actions

I'd say it depends on how much free time you have on Sundays.

If I was you, I would get the Lions season package. It’s gonna be worth it this year!

Not even trippin' on the fact that Suh or Best have not signed

They will get signed and will be in training camp. Every team goes thru this.
