Projecting a starting roster

2 Games in the book based on what I have seen so far. The starting team IMO is currently looking like this. No sorry Paul Pratt did not make the cut as the number 1 corner. Keep in mind this is just my opinion and being pre-season next week it could change but I thought it would be a way to open discussion on who has impressed people and what the starting team is expected to look like.

Qb- Stafford (obviously)

RB- Best,Smith,Morris,Brown( Dorsey has done ok but the helmet to helmet hits HAVE to stop.)

WR- CJ,Burrelson,BJ,Derrick Williams,Toone ( Maybe Fowler depending how many wideouts we keep)

TE- Pettigrew, Scheffler, Heller, (gronkowski could make the team just to keep him off practice squad so he dosen't get nabbed up)

LT- Backus

LG-Sims

C- Raiola

RG- Peterman

RT- Cherilus ( though Jansen can easly take the spot I think Schwartz wants the young guy to start)

FB- Felton ( we won't carry two full backs)

DE- Avril, Vanden Bosch

DT Suh, Williams, Hill

MLB- Levy

OLB- Peterson, Follett ( not ready to pull him out just yet.)

S- Delmas, Phillips ( dosen't seem to have any competion right now)

CB- Houston,Bly,Wade,Spivey ( needs to work harder on his cover skills) I also look for Berry, Pratt or Rushing to make the final 53.

Obviously the whole depth chart is harder to predict but a few players that I would like to see more of in the comming weeks include- Caleb Campbell,Isaiaha Ekujiba, Eric Fowler, Landon Johnson, lawrence Jackson ( yet to play), Turk Mcbride,Michael Moore, Derrick Williams ( needs more time as a reciver not a return man),Grounds keeper Willie Young.

Phillips

I like Phillips alot but I think the coaching staff prefers CC Brown at the “left safety” for now. Phillips has been backing up at Delmas’ spot and to my knowledge hasn’t been practicing on Brown’s side. That may change later as Phillips is developed and moved around

Its not that I think Phillips isn’t good enough to be the starter just that I think the coaching staff will start Brown at least in the beginning

by Dan5585 on Aug 22, 2010 1:53 PM EDT up reply actions

Could be wrong but......

I think by the end of preseason, Phillips will be the man. Heart of a beast wanting to prove he should have been drafted. Making the most out of it. Desire & attitude. Much needed commodities in the den.

From what I have seen...

I definitely prefer Phillips over C.C. Brown….C.C. Brown sucked hard core in the Denver game. He was just terrible, while Phillips looked pretty good to me for the 2nd week in a row.

There is no way Spievey will start

And I think Lawrence Jackson will be the backup to Avril, seeing as how Avril has been mighty resurgent so far this season.

Phillips and Delmas for sure

CC Brown is known for getting lost in coverage. He’s a good back up. Phillips just has that “it” that a safety needs to have. We may have found a great undrafted player.

Oh you didn't know?? You're ass better CALLLLLLLL SOMEBODY!!!!!

by KDawg on Aug 22, 2010 9:40 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree too

I’m (potentially) greatly relieved.

I considered 2 players to be key to our number of wins this year. A greatly improved Stafford (which I expect) could propel us to many more wins, but a bad Left Safety could hold us back by getting burned for big plays and TD’s. I had predicted a record of 6-10 this year, but if Phillips keeps playing well (and starts at Left Safety) and Delmas stays healthy, I’d revise my prediction to 8-8.

"We lost!" Delmas yelled at reporters. "What you want? What you got to ask me?"
Delmas stared at reporters defiantly.
"That’s what I thought,"

Eric Fowler….glue for hands.
Wille Young…another lunatic is always good.
Gronkowski over Heller….youth baby!
Phillips of course.
DeDe over Brown.
And see ya Derrick Williams, you’ve shown zero.

by delusional on Aug 22, 2010 2:49 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

williams over northcutt

I’ll take Derrick everytime. Williams isn’t gonna be a kick returner but IMHO he looks better as a reciver this year than he did last year. He’s also a Mayhew draft pick doubt he gets cut after one full season that sounds like something millen would do. He has to have time to develop most reciver don’t really click until year 3. I frankly am suprised people are s quick to give up on derrick already. Truth is he dosen’t get much playing time but he has made so good catches here and there. I don’t see him playing much this year either but Northcutt will be gone before Derrick. I like the Gronk probably more than alot of people on here but Heller has great blocking abillitys and gronkowski still has room to improve I think we should carry all for and look to have gronk as the 3rd TE next season.

So far

I think Randy Phillips and Willie Young have won spots on the roster. But there are some major spots up for grabs. DeDe vs Aaron Brown. DW vs Toone. Gronk vs Heller. Cohen vs Flu. The whole LB corp, not to mention the secondary.

Hype i gotta give a shit ton of +1 on this one.

Phillips and Young have locked themselfs onto the 53 man roster and i like your match-ups. To me Brown and Dorsey have looked better than Morris to be honest i really haven’t seen anything out of Morris this preseason. Kinda pisses me off now that Detroit didn’t trade him for Cromartie and Pacman is salt in the wounds right now to.

I think you gotta add Fowler into the competion w DW and Toone and as much as i like Heller he may have lost his job to Gronk.

by KDawg on Aug 22, 2010 9:56 PM EDT up reply actions

Here is what I think...

QB – Stafford, Hill, Stanton (even though I think Drew should be #2)

RB – Best, Smith, Morris, Brown (See ya DeDe)

WR – CJ, Burleson, BJ, Northcutt, Toone, and maybe Fowler (Derrick Williams is a bust, and i would be shocked if we keep more than 5 WRs, but I’ll say maybe 6)

TE – Pettigrew, Scheffler, Heller (I like what I have seen of Gronko, but I doubt he will beat out Heller for the 3rd spot)

LT – Backus, Fox

LG – Sims, Man Ram

C – Raiola, Gerberry

RG – Peterman (Man Ram will backup both guards)

RT – Cherilus, Jansen (They will flip flop)

FB – Felton

DE – Avril, KVB, McBride, Cohen, Devries, Young

DT – Suh, Williams, Hill, Cohen

MLB – Levy, Ekejiuba, Ciurciu

OLB – Peterson, Follett, Johnson, Campbell

S – Delmas, Phillips, Simpson, Brown

CB – Houston, Wade, Bly, Spievey, Berry, Williams (God I hope they cut Wesley, King, and Pratt)

That makes 53 if we keep 6 WRs…

Ok...

So Fowler (or Gronko, depending on which goes first) is out…Jason Hanson is in.
Jack Williams is out…Nick Harris is in.
And I hate to say it because of all of the preseason love he is getting, but maybe Willie Young goes to the practice squad to make room for Hauschka?

You were right…Muhlbach is still the long snapper too…so that means we probably end up cutting one of Aaron Brown, Mo Morris, Tim Toone, and Caleb Campbell too…I would lean toward it being Caleb Campbell or Aaron Brown before Toone, because I doubt we want to run with Aaron Brown as out returner again, and I do not see D Williams making the cut this year.

I know I have 6 DE here but I think I would use some of them as a full back or blockign tight end in goal line. I think the bottom depth guys like Cohen, Fluellen, or McBride could all learn the goal line offense for a super heavy set :)

Speaking of that how cool would it be to put Jason Fox and Jon Jansen in as tight ends and Brandon Pettigrew and Gronk in as WR in that goal line set! Maybe we could even put best as the QB and Felton as the HB and one of them big bodies as a FB :)

I would also drop D Williams and keep Fowler.

I wish we could drop Ramirez, but who else are we gonna use in his place? Hilliard?

I am worried about Berry on the practice squad, I think he would be snatched up by someone else just like we lost that tackle last year to Miami. (i forgot his name)

and i don’t sign his check, but he makes alot of money for someone who will only see action if someone gets hurt. . .i am sure that the FO see’s this as a business and $ adds up. . .plus, i would say morris has been ok at best. . .he averaged 4.1 yards per carry last year. . .his yards per carry has steadily declined over that last three years. . .he is also 30 years old which tends to be a key age at the running back position. . .look at LT after age 30

So you would rather have Aaron Brown( who is behind Dorsey when it comes to preseason snaps)

as your back up to: A running that just torn his ACL in December, and to a rookie. But release a prove back because he makes a couple of million more than you think his worth is( in a no salary cap season)?

The only stat I need to is this one

51-223-1TD 4.5 ave. Thats Morris’ line for the last three games of the season when he started. You want to see what Aaron Brown’s was? Because he was the back up.

if the shoe fits...get another one just like it - George Carlin

by JCruize on Aug 23, 2010 2:01 AM EDT up reply actions

stat cherry picking. . .

Morris will most likely be in the backup role this season, barring multiple major injuries. . .i don’t care what he did over the course of three games, i care what he did over the course of the entire season. . .i think its important to look at his stats as a backup because that is the role he will most likely fill. . .if we want to look at yards per carry, Morris had several weeks with 5+ carries averaging under 2 yards per carry. . .week 16, as a starter, he had 18 carries for 37 yards with a 2.1 average. . .my point is that this is a business. . .for a third string player that makes more per year than the two players in front of him, and will likely only see significant playing time if there is an injury. . .i say make room on the roster for another position. . .Morris is also 30 this year, and its not like his effort as a starter won us any games. . .

by Wick22 on Aug 23, 2010 2:16 AM EDT up reply actions

and since you asked. . .

Brown average 4.9 yards per carry over the course of the entire season. . .he also had 0 fumbles to Morris’ 1 fumble. . .and he is young, was a rookie learning the system, and makes peanuts compared to Morris who in my opinion has peaked and is on the decline if you look at his yards per carry over the last three seasons

by Wick22 on Aug 23, 2010 2:23 AM EDT up reply actions

The battle for the last RB spot is going to be fierce. Here is my take.

Maurice Morris: You know what your getting with him and its pretty solid if not spectacular. It is possible that his salary is a concern, but if that is the case we should cut Julian Peterson immediately. The only negatives on Mo is that he is not a consistent positive yard gainer. He will have a few runs of 2 or no yards before breaking some decent runs. This actually put him in Mayhew’s doghouse last year and could be why he is cut this year.

Aaron Brown: Still has a lot of upside but is horrible at pass blocking. That is the big challenge for every rookie RB though so it is not a huge surprise. It takes him a while to get up to speed, he is not as explosive as his 40 time would lead you to believe. He has to be “wound up” to utilize that speed.

DeDe Dorsey: Shows some play making ability and explosion but at this point he is a veteran in the league and still having issues with pass protect. Even though he had one great preseason game I personally would put him as the first to cut since he has the least common denominator of upside combined with current talent.

Can I see Aaron Brown making the roster over Morris, sure. It is pretty much a coin flip for me. Pass protection made the difference for me but being that he was a draft pick for the current front office he will probably be given the nod over Morris. Personally I would not risk Stafford’s well being for that second chance and that is why he did not make my 53 man roster. Maybe we could trade him to the Texans for a 7th round pick, he did play at TCU after all and they are hurting bad for running backs.
