Lions Place Jared DeVries On Injured Reserve, Sign 2 Defensive Players
Dave Birkett is reporting that the Lions have placed defensive end Jared DeVries on injured reserve.
DeVries had arthroscopic knee surgery on Thursday, and although the hope was for him to be back "relatively soon," the Lions went ahead and put him on IR. I figured this is what would happen simply because it seemed like DeVries' rehab would take more than just a few weeks and the Lions weren't going to waste a roster spot on someone who is injured. In that regard, this move is no surprise.
In other news, the Lions made the following moves in the last couple of days:
- Placed safety David Roach on the waived/injured list
- Signed safety John Wendling, who was with the Bills from 2007 to last season before being waived back in February
- Signed defensive lineman Jaron Baston, an undrafted free agent who was on the Broncos' roster at some point this offseason

Sad about Devries
Devries has had some bad luck recently. Sad to see him not be able to try his comeback. The other 2 guys seem like camp bodies at best.
you could see this coming for some time now
Devries is a tough fighter with a motor that never seemed to stop but injurys happen and happen more often when a player is older. Lets hope he is able to heal up and be ready for next season.
The only problem, with his age, is he going to be able to compete for a place on the team with the young guns we have now and another year of experience.
Just hire the guy as a DE end specialist coach and get it over with.
Lions fans deserve better than being the laughing stock of the NFL. Lets all hope they are heading in the right direction finally.
Ah, for Christ's sake !
One career over playing wise and another cast off who maybe lasted a week. Unbelievable. -1 about Jared and I still wonder about our strength and conditioning program. Year after year same old story…

Deveries had a solid career
I think he’s done now. Like to see him stay involved with detroit through the lions or not as just a part of the community. He’s always been a classy guy who played hard. Hell maybe he should get a job @ WWJD as a commentator.

Wendling
This from the Buffalo website:
John Wendling. A sixth-round pick in 2007, the Bills have gotten solid value out of Wendling despite his rarely seeing the field as a defender. He’s developed into Buffalo’s most valuable special teams player not named Brian Moorman; it will be interesting to see whether or not his credibility is completely retained as the team transitions coordinators, from Bobby April to Bruce DeHaven.
Also,
Wendling really is an excellent specialist….and Wendling is given another shot to earn a roster spot based purely on his special teams prowess.
If you are pondering, "What am I supposed to do" think the EXACT OPPOSITE thing as Matt Millen is thinking.
good camp body but might be a good special team unit guy.

I am bored but I also found,
It was a surprise to John Wendling when he was released by the team. Turns out the special teams gunner had microfractuce surgery at the end of the season, though, which in light of his limited role on defense presumably led to his release.

NFL.com's Bucky Brooks somehow got his hands on our Kool-Aid
It’s OK we have plenty to share, drink up everybody
Good link Wayne
Favorite lines: The offense has moved up and down the field with little resistance.
With Stafford starting to live up to the hype that accompanied his arrival as the top overall pick in 2009, the Lions are on the verge of becoming relevant again.
Damn, someone’s been filling up my Kool-Aid pitcher again!
Expectations don't produce!
Holy crap that was sweet. I guess him and SLH can hook up and have jumping contests. Remember that jump he made?

Ok, I see the plan now
We’re going with four safeties and two corners?
[...]when Giants coach Steve Owen, a certified defensive genius, was asked how he planned to stop Nagurski, he said: "With a shotgun, as he’s leaving the dressing room."
Not a bad idea if we use 5 defensive lineman to go with them.

so thats a 5-3-3 D?
5 D lineman
3 LBs
3 DBs (safteys)

DeVries is the man
I actually like the signing of John Wendling. But i want Morgan Trent i’d give a 4th rounder up for him, i think he would do more for our defense than Page.
He had 3 INTs against the eagles
I doubt cincy is to hot to move the wolverine corner. I am for an young corner that can make a impact right away.

Well
I can’t see most teams in a rush to move a young CB like Trent, but the Bengals have their two young, long-term starting CB’s in Joseph and Hall, just took Brandon Ghee in the third round this year, and just signed Pacman. It’s hard to find an NFL team with good depth at CB, but Cincy is such a team, and while a fourth rounder seems a tad high, I think if we offered them a fifth they would bite.
Mayhew, make something happen.
another Denver guy?
Whats with us taking another player dropped or released by the Broncos?
Denver is going for the high character guys that are big on intangibles and football IQ.
So I don’t mind us giving the guys they cut a look at all.
Jared DeVries
Sad to hear about his injury, hopefully he recovers and is back to 100 percent soon.
