Lions Notes: Louis Delmas Expected To Play Today

  • The Lions broke training camp on Wednesday, meaning the players were allowed to check out of the team hotel. As the Lions head into the final week of the preseason, they will start to get on a schedule more like what they will experience during the regular season.
  • Louis Delmas missed practice on Wednesday to get a day to rest and then was back on the field on Thursday. The plan is for him to play today, so barring any last-minute setbacks, he should be on the field. This is what Jim Schwartz had about him on Twitter a couple days ago:
We sat Delmas out of practice yesterday so he could get good work in today. He finished practice & is right on track. Everything looks good
That's definitely good to hear, and it will definitely be a good sign if he is on the field today.
  • Calvin Johnson was back at practice on Wednesday after missing both of Tuesday's practices.
  • Sammie Hill and C.C. Brown missed practice on Thursday, as did Lawrence Jackson, Aaron Berry and Jack Williams.
  • Dennis Northcutt is going to get more reps during today's game than he has in the first two of the preseason.
  • Jason Hanson will take part in warm-ups before the game, but he will not play. Chances are we will see him during game action on Thursday against the Bills.
  • The Texans and Seahawks also put in a claim for Tyler Polumbus, who ended up with the Lions because their priority on the waiver wire is higher.
  • Three defensive linemen were worked out on Thursday. (Jaron Baston likely was one of them, as he signed a couple days ago.)
  • Before returning to football, Paul Pratt was working at a fitness center.
  • Three former Lions made Sports Illustrated's best NFL player by jersey number list -- Barry Sanders, Doak Walker and Alex Karras.
  • Jon Jansen thinks an 18-game NFL schedule is inevitable.
  • Tatum Bell recently got cut by a UFL team. Ouch.

It IS inevitable

The fans want it, the owners want it. The Players’ Union should use this to their advantage in negotiations.

how many fans do you know want it?

Most people I’ve seen seem totally against it.

I find "the fans want it" as a blanket statement

People in the league and press just assume fans want more games. What fans want is Quality games. Adding 2 more reg season games will increase injuries. I think i read somewhere that a team averages 2.5 injuries a game. Having 2 more games would increase that number in my mind. Players are already dinged up, tired and worn down from a long season making them even more susceptible to injuries in these added 2 games.

More hurt players = a more watered down playoff product.

What is the point of having playoffs if the team you are watching and following does not have the same players out there you have followed all season?

Lions fans deserve better than being the laughing stock of the NFL. Lets all hope they are heading in the right direction finally.

You have to take into consideration that the avg. fan is very different from us guys.

The avg. fan turns on his tv at weekends and wants to watch football. Except some star players he doesn’t know the roster and propably can’t tell any difference in quality of play between regulars and backups.
The avg. fan is just much much less informed then your regular blog or even sport website follower.

2 more game in the reg season

is only going to create more injuries that will water down the playoffs.

Hell no I say, HELL NO!

Great to hear about Delmas

as for an 18 game schedule, I’d have to say no

I'd rather stay at 16 as well

18 is just too much.

BUT

We are forgetting that most likely, 2 pre season games get eliminated …

we are thinking sensibly about injuries, but in the end, if we get 2 more games that count, we will be there .. excited as hell :)

I am all for 18 games, in fact I want 20, no preseason at all!

I want more football, but then I think they need to increase the roster size too, I would say at least 8 more to help rotate guys through, keep more fresh legs, and help offset some injury problems. If it was up to me they would play year round! HAHA I know it might be too much for a human body to take but I just want to watch football 24/7 365. And I want to watch real football, the NFL, regular season or playoffs. Not some bullshit UFL / CFL / Arena crap. Not preseason either. I actually want them to keep 2 preseason games but I think 20 is an ideal number. IMO there is about a month of football that is just dead anyways and I would rather see that filled with games. Between the Draft, Camp, Preseason, Regular Season, and Playoffs I would like to see football become pretty much a year round sport. It is close now but there is that month in the summer that is just dead time. I say utilizing 2 weeks of that along with 2 weeks of preseason going to regular season would be sweet for me as a fan. Granted I said I wanted a 61 man roster for a 18 week season, I think a 70 man roster for a 20 game season would be cool.

You can add all the guys you want

it does not change the fact that the talent level will drop.

8, 10, 20 more guys that would not normally make a roster, it will not stop the drop in talent when first stringers are sitting due to injuries and fans are forced to watch backup role players decide games. We have enough of that right now.

The talent level will drop true, but then again some of those guys that were bubble players will get snaps, and some of them will emerge to be great.

It will be interesting to say the least. I will say this much to counter my original post. If the talent level drops of significantly it might not be as entertaining as people think.

What I want as a rule change is a limited DL time.

Allowing players to return after a certain time on the DL (say 10 weeks) makes roster management so much easier and would also help significantly with the problem that arise with the 18 game season.

If the schedule expands that's probably likely

Along with expanded rosters, active lists, etc.

To be honest, I don't buy this whole 18 games = more injuries stuff

Adding two extra games won’t increase injuries beyond what would normally happen in games. I watch a lot of sports, and NFL has one of the shortest seasons I can think of, and don’t even try to tell me that it’s more physical because Rugby and Rugby League are just as physical, if not more so. The Rugby League season is 26 weeks long with two byes, not counting the playoffs. Sure, there’s injuries, it’s a contact sport, they are inevitable, but teams don’t get ravaged by injury anymore than an NFL team does. I’d rather have an extra two quality games of football every year. The only real problem I have with it is the changes to records and statistics, but that’s just the statistician in me talking. I think the NFL can handle an 18 game season.
