Video: Ndamukong Suh Tries To Decapitate Jake Delhomme

Although the penalty was a stupid one because it was careless and came on a failed third-down conversion for Cleveland, it is example No. 1 of why you won't like Ndamukong Suh when he's angry.

Suh definitely needs to play smarter than that, but I will chalk this up to him letting out some preseason frustration. Besides, Suh was already going to be called for a face mask penalty no matter what, so he decided to get all he could out of the penalty. Unfortunately for Jake Delhomme, that meant nearly having his head ripped off in the process.

(Alternate video link in case the NFL removes the one from YouTube.)

Kinda brings a tear to your eye... doesn't it?

Look, I don’t condone dirty play, but it’s honestly about damn time we get a little frickin’ attitude on defense. This play was all about a good player getting frustrated with getting constant double teams and no sacks and it got the best of him. Good. It should. Suh is a winner and keeping him tied up all game is only going to piss him off more. Now, he can’t get fined and take 15 yard penalties every game, but that play right there shows that he will do anything he can to eventually make a play and get to the quarterback.

This guy is going to be good… like, scary good. Once the whole defense adopts the attitude of Suh, Vanden Bosch and Delmas, we are going to kill some people. It’ll be like literally unleashing a pack of wild dogs (or lions) on opposing teams and that will be fun to watch.

I’ll take as many of those as long as it doesn’t become a habit once the season begins. It’s good to let out the aggression now and let his teammates know he wants to win just as bad as everyone else who’s been here for a long time and use to all the losing.

Great job Suh, talk about finishing a play off all the way through.

I stopped in the SBN cleveland browns site

Several fans thought Suh should have been ejected and suspended.

I can understand how they felt. Suh basically tried to make a bobble head out of old homer. When that was not painful enough, Suh tossed him to the side like a surprisingly light sack of potatos.

Yes, I agree the frustration level must be high, however, play smart and clean. Far to many punks like Richie Incognito can line the big man up and end his career with a shot to the knees ( week 16 ). Toss in some mental intenseness with that killer instinct and you’ll get those sacks…

If he does that again, he should be ejected and suspended

The facemask was bad enough, but when you got a guy down on his knees, and then you twist the head the other way? That’s fucking bullshit.

Let me put it this way, imagine that it’s September 12th, and the Bears get a good pass rush on, and say Lance Briggs sticks his paw in Matthew Stafford’s eye, and has Staff down on the ground, and then decides to rip Safford’s head off. What are all of us screaming at the TV at that moment?

There’s no place in the NFL for a play like this, and to excuse it as frustration over getting double teamed is a homeristic copout of massive proportions.

In Roger Goodell’s NFL, Ndamukong Suh just got himself marked as a potentially dirty plaeyr.

Official BYB Juju Consultant...now accepting rally creature applications!

by ahtrap on Aug 30, 2010 4:45 AM EDT reply actions

It's not a dirty play.

This is Football. He caught his facemask with his hand and knew he was getting a penalty. Suh then wrapped up around the QBs helmet and shoulder and Judo Tossed him onto the turf. Alot like how Porcello Tossed Youkilus. Except Suh is Bigger, so it looked more violent.

If Suh Wanted to rip his head off, He Would Have, but he didn’t. Watch the clip 90 times.
He doesn’t pull his helmet off, or put any pressure on the head or neck.
It is all on the shoulderpads and jersey, hence why his pad came out. And then Jake whined and cried like a baby.

Get ready Favre…

You got me wrong, Smurf

UID of 35, I was here before POD was cool, even if I haven’t been commenting much in recent years.

I hear you about the attitude, and I like the ferocity, but I keep looking at that play, and I see Delhomme get rid of the ball, and his knees touch the ground, and THEN Suh torques his neck the other direction.

And I haven’t watched the play 90 times yet, but I’m not seeing the hands on the shoulder pads, I see Suh’s mitts wrapped around the helmet/facemask.

One time it’s a mistake, it doesn’t warrant suspension, but like I said, if it happens again? You know Goodell’s all over every minor infraction, if it happens again, all I’m saying is Suh better watch out, lest he get sat down for a game or three.

I'm expecting 100% improvement from the Lions this season.

by ahtrap on Aug 31, 2010 12:15 AM EDT up reply actions

Pay to the whistle

Players are dogged all the time for giving up on the play. Suh grabbed the face mask. He then released it and went to wrap up and throw down the quarterback BEFORE THE WHISTLE WAS BLOWN! The scenario you described, Stafford being poked in the eye and going down (at which point he whistle would blow) then getting his head ripped off is completely different. The play would be dead. It would be a personal foul after the play. Suh’s personal foul took place during the play (he wasn’t given a personal foul for how he took the QB down because he was in the process of going for the tackle while the QB still had the ball and was not down). You can call it dirty all you want….take out the face mask and assume Delhomme doesn’t throw the ball away and you know what happens? ESPN and everybody is talking about it as the biggest and best sack of the preseason.

I’d never root for him to be suspended, but I’m also not going to praise him for this play. I like the hustle and not giving up on the play, but the only thing I can say is that maybe he didn’t see the ball come out. Delhomme just kind of flipped it after suh had him dead to rights.

I've watched the play several times....

and at full speed it looks nasty, but if you watch it in slow mo….Suh’s head was turned when Delhomme got rid of the ball so he still thinks Delhomme has the ball, when Suh wrapped up Delhomme, Delhomme was still fighting going down (mostly because he was going to be wadded up like day old newspaper around fish guts), but he was still fighting, so Suh finished him off….then realized the ball was gone.

If you think about it, the toss was actually a better outcome for Delhomme than if Suh had driven him in to the ground like it originally looked like he was going to do.

Not sure if Suh realized he’d grabbed the corner of Delhommes helmet or not….so can’t comment on that.

It's okay because it's his first time

I don’t particularly want to see this sort of thing again because it was pretty much illegal in every way possible. I like intensity but not reactive intensity. When you do something like this because you’re frustrated, that’s not alright, and basically one of the MAJOR reasons why the Lions have been the worst team in the last ten years. It would be different if he just happened to grab the facemask by mistake, but he grabbed it, drug him down by it and then clutch-whipped him to the ground. There’s no place in the NFL for that stuff, especially involving the head and neck areas. He could have done some real damage.
But like I said earlier, it’s his first time doing something dumb like this and I’m not going to worry about it or lose any sleep over it. In the words of God and Peter Griffin… “Everybody gets 1.”

by ahtrap on Aug 31, 2010 3:13 PM EDT up reply actions

A few points.

First of all if it was such a big foul the Cleveland offensive line would have reacted. Was it overzealous sure, that is why he got a 15 yard penalty. Was it malicious, meaning did Suh intend to injure him, no. He tried to throw him down to tackle him because he thought he still had the ball. Because of their size difference and the fact that Delhome was on his knees already (I hear he is used to being on his knees for the big man, but that is usually Holmgren) Suh grabbed what he could when he was wrapping him up to tackle him. Maybe we should fine Delhome for unsportsmanlike conduct, attempting to blow a big man.

Look this is the NFL, this is not some patty cake touch football league. The object of the the defense is to tackle the ball carrier. The harder they tackle them the more wear and tear they take during the game and the the slower they will get because they are worn out. Suh did nothing illegal or malicious enough to warrant anything more than the 15 yard penalty. What a candy ass Delhome is, totally weak to even whine about it. You know I have my issues with Favre but at least he is a real man not some sissy bitch that would rather be in a tutu than a football uniform. If Suh did that to Favre he would have got up smiling, and tapped him on the helmet saying “Is that all you got big guy? I thought you could tackle harder than that?” And I would bet any amount of money Stafford would do the same thing.

Yes Cleveland has submitted the tape to the NFL Front office they want it reviewed for disciplinary action against Suh. What a bunch of candy ass whiny crybaby sissy bitches. The trust is if that happened to a Detroit QB it would not even be a story because we have real mane playing football here. Not a bunch of whiny, cry babies that run to Goodell every time our QB takes a hit. And yeah that goes out to New England for the same crap too. One thing I despise Brady for is starting all of this crap because he was not man enough to take a sack against Oakland.
