Kevin Smith

Still trying to see where the hatred is coming from. All of a sudden after last nights game or even during the game a couple of fans on here decided to start the "I HATE KEVIN SMITH CLUB" and a few more jumped the band wagon. Now im not here to to argue whether he is a valuable back-up or not. I am just going to post a Poll to see Pride Of Detroit's view of Kevin Smith. …he’s a great #1 option. Best and him are going to SHARE the backfield folks. Whether you like it or not, get used to it. Best and Smith are 1 and 1a

you are comfortable with that?? i sure as hell not

I agree with det32 here.

KSmith is okay as a #2, but I sincerely doubt he gets anywhere near the touches that Best does. And I sincerely hope he does not. I see it 60/40 for Best.

Smith is not going to share the backfield with Best.

Agreed

And they should be pretty damn successful. Just couldn’t bring myself to vote for “love the guy”, because quite frankly I don’t feel that strongly about him. Like him? Yes. Love him? Ehh… I don’t know about that. But let’s just say by the end of the season I’m betting he’s recaptured the favor of all of these haters.

I'd just love to see everyone

buy into a Best/Smith tandem….much like the Brandon Jacobs/Ahmad Bradshaw or D. Williams/J. Stewart tandems. I think they could be that good together. Smith is a good player, and he’s shown it. He has a different skill set from Best. Best is quicker…can avoid tackles better…but Smith is nobody we should want to get rid of right now. There are much worse players at RB than him.

by joshsun on Aug 29, 2010 4:33 PM EDT up reply actions

NO, you have it all wrong. Us Lions fans want All Pro players at every position.

Every football team that has ever won anything only has superstars at every position of the team. Having a BACK UP RB who would be considered as a below average #1 RB is not acceptable to this group. We are also fans of the mighty Wolverine and Spartan football teams who have blue chippers at every position too.

I apologize in advance, but the above is sarcasm.

by NorthLeft12 on Aug 29, 2010 5:12 PM EDT up reply actions

RB is not a position where average is acceptable unlike other positions.

No position, other than QB, touches the ball as much.

We all know this. So, no. Having an unspectacular back up is not acceptable. Considering he is now clearly being placed in the role as a change of pace back. A role he is not suited to play because he just does not have the size to be a punishing back to Bests speed back.

I love the guys heart and drive, I just think the team has evolved past his skill set.

Lions fans deserve better than being the laughing stock of the NFL. Lets all hope they are heading in the right direction finally.

by joshsun on Aug 29, 2010 5:29 PM EDT up reply actions

i see it completely the other way around

The pats went 16-0 with a bunch of unspectacular backs. Neither the Colts nor the Saints had backs that are all that great, yet they both went to the superbowl. You don’t need a good back to have a good running game. Denver under Shanahan had no names rush for a 1000 yards all the time. The running game is far more dependant on good blocking up front then it is on who carries the ball.

by Latif Masud on Aug 29, 2010 9:43 PM EDT up reply actions

They really haven't

They still keep Maroney around. Same with Faulk and Sammy Morris, and that Ben Jarvis Green Ellis guy. It just seems like they turn over their back field b/c they added Fred Taylor

The beginning of the end of the misery

by Latif Masud on Aug 29, 2010 11:21 PM EDT up reply actions

The only one I think has been there long term and has been a big impact has been Faulk.

That could just be because he is the third down back though and tends to make the flashy plays. Maroney is the one big time in their dog house. If he gets cut I hope the Lions give him a look. They have sold all their backs on one cut and up this year but that don’t work with Maroney. He just cant stop jumping around, its kind of ingrained into him to be a jitterbug.

Maybe that is part of the problem with Kevin. I can tell you I see a difference in their backs that are going one cut and up field. Maybe Kevin needs to stop looking for the perfect hole and just blast some in there. Hit the hole fast, hard, and with confidence, and keep them legs chopping. But yeah I don’t expect Maroney to last in New England if something better comes along.

Player Att Yds Yds/Att Long TD
BenJarvus Green-Ellis 23 59 2.6 6 1
Sammy Morris 11 64 5.8 20 1
Fred Taylor 11 54 4.9 28 1
Chris Taylor 8 39 4.9 8 0
Laurence Maroney 8 30 3.8 13 2

New England is also ranked 22nd in the league in rushing so far this preseason with only 91.0 yards per game. To help put that in perspective we are ranked 6th with 128.0 yards per game.

by Evilsmurf on Aug 30, 2010 12:08 AM EDT up reply actions

by Lionsfan8 on Aug 29, 2010 5:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Well unlike Smith, Grew was on pace to beat a HoF tight ends rookie record, our very own CHarlie Sanders.

Sorry Smith had an all right rookie season but nowhere near what say Adrian Peterson did. Pettigrew > Smith. The people proposing trades and cuts for Smith are all people that adamantly believe he is 3rd, 4th, or 5th on our depth chart in terms of Talent. If his injury is playing into that or not I don’t know. I do know that once a running back has a knee injury they are very likely to decline rather than improve. I have just seen it happen too many times.

by Evilsmurf on Aug 29, 2010 5:38 PM EDT up reply actions

Name 3 RB's in history that did what AP did

as a rookie. Yet if our rookie RB doesn’t do that, he’s an average bum that doesn’t deserve a roster spot?

Are you gonna hold Best to the same standards, and call for his head, when he doesn’t rush for 1,800 yards as a rookie?

AP only had i believe about just over 1300 in his rookie season

by JCruize on Aug 30, 2010 10:41 AM EDT up reply actions

Those points got sidetracked

My point was that Pettigrew is greater value than Smith and that a RB usually declines after a knee injury. Toledo countered with the AP thing I don’t know why. Mainly I was thinking of Artose Pinner and Kevin Jones and that is why I am skeptical that Kevin will ever be anywhere near as good as he was pre-injury. I have just seen it too many times where a running back loses something when his knee gets blown out. So my point is that Smith in his rookie year in my mind is probably better than anything he will be in the future.

And that is fine

but what is the alterative? What has Brown really proved yet? This time last season. We were arguing that maybe Stanton should start over Stafford because of his pre-season performance. There is a reason why the coaching staff has Smith ahead of Brown on the depth chart. IMO a healthy Smith is better than Brown, DeDe, and Morris. Next season, well that could be a whole other discussion. But right now, for this season. I like Smith as our #2.

Why isn't there an option...

To stop discussing it when there is already 12 posts about it discussed to death. POD is gonna go to hell if someone doesn’t stop the madness! :P

If you are pondering, "What am I supposed to do" think the EXACT OPPOSITE thing as Matt Millen is thinking.

by LionsGuy4Ever on Aug 29, 2010 3:27 PM EDT reply actions

All these EMOTIONS....

I’ll repeat my post in another thread….

“Hate?”
Please don’t mix ‘hate’ with reality.

… and ‘feelings’ have nothing to do with making the team.

Would you really want a coach or GM to keep a guy on the roster because they "feel bad" that he isn’t up to par after an injury???

IF THAT is the case… K Smith needs to be put on the PUP so they can keep Aaron Brown or Mo Morris on the roster.

You can’t have feelings in player evaluations. From what I have seen so far in the preseason games…. we need to gain in other positions and are expendable in the RB position, which lead me to the trade proposition.

I didn’t vote as none of the answers provided a factual explanation to why or why not K Smith should or should not be on the team…. they’re just a bunch of “FEELINGS” on the situation.

Drop the feelings, enter the facts….

Fact is, the Lions have 2 number 2 RBs on the roster.

Fact is, The Lions need depth at the LB and CB position.

Fact is, there are many teams in need of RB Depth

Considering these things, who’s to go? The younger ‘upside’ RB that is coming off injury… or the Veteran RB that’s rolling into the twilight years?

As a GM, I’d be shopping. That’s all I’m saying.

by CLF on Aug 29, 2010 3:34 PM EDT reply actions

It comes down to value

I think if K Smith got traded tomorrow for a CB who had value and not just a body then most people would love it or hate it. It comes down to TRUST OF THE COACHING STAFF. We are all “brilliant” coaches in our heads aren’t we? What happened when people said don’t draft Stafford and he came back and won the other Browns game? People started to understand the value of SCOUTING! Just give up being Schwartz in your head and let the man do his job. If he cuts him or trades him then they know what they are doing. AND I can’t count any other times I had this much faith in the coaching staff/GM before.

If you are pondering, "What am I supposed to do" think the EXACT OPPOSITE thing as Matt Millen is thinking.

by LionsGuy4Ever on Aug 29, 2010 3:42 PM EDT up reply actions

Just saying if we trade him for value then everyone will be fine with it. Or get over it quickly. We just gotta trust the front office! I guess I said it weird sorry.

Keep Him

I think we need to limit Best’s carries. I am in favor of keeping Brown and Morris. Along with Felton I would think K Smith would be expendible. The problem is we can’t get anything for him and we will definitely need him should Best go down. Another area is blocking, I know Brown and Morris can’t block and I don’t know if Best can. For me it comes down to De De or Smith and in that scenario I say De De is gone.

Not last year.

Felton had some opportunities inside the five with T. Smith as a lead blocker. Results? Zero TDs.

He looks great as a surprise RB, but when the defence knew he was coming, they stuffed him.

That is what is amazing

Things were to incredibly terrible for the Lions, that a player averaging 4.1 yards a carry his rookie year was the next coming. We were so desperate to find something good. Any real fan remembers how this happened every year.

Smith is what he is, a north and south runner with limited cutting skills who is undersized to play a power back role. He seemingly has no fear and is an incredible worker.

If he stays on the roster, i am not going to complain. I can assure you of this, his replacement will come in next years draft. The NFL is a running back by committee league.

I'm not sure where you got that information, but I don't recall anyone thinking that he was going to be an All Pro or anything close to that.

I recall people on this site thinking he could be an every down back who could rush for around 1100 yards [70 yards per game], catch 40 to 50 passes and block. That did not seem to be ridiculous to me.

Is that settling? With all our other holes, I think people wanted to believe that we were up to average at one spot in the lineup.

by NorthLeft12 on Aug 29, 2010 6:51 PM EDT up reply actions

Thats all he has to be now a guy to take some carries away from Best keeping him healthy… I support the 2 back system and think we could have one now…

by msivits on Aug 29, 2010 5:49 PM EDT reply actions

If we end up trading him, I’m sure we will get good value. I suspect we would trade Morris first maybe even throw in
Dorsey.

by coolbreeze42 on Aug 29, 2010 6:04 PM EDT reply actions

Voted love the guy...

Basically it was his first game back since knee surgery where he handled the load. As much as everyone wants to trade him i don’t think we can get much for him at this time. I think it is no surprise that Smith goes down on first contact he has done that his whole career in Detroit. He has lost some speed and his value on the team has dipped w/ the rise of Brown and Dorsey who do the same shit Smith does but are both faster.

K Smooth is falling out of favor w the home crowd but he has some dedicated fans in Motown. I think it will be interesting to see what happens down the stretch could there be a place for him on the 53 man roster is out of are hands all we can do is watch.

Good Luck K Smooth….

by SmittyJ on Aug 30, 2010 11:13 AM EDT reply actions

Smitty, Brown and Smith are as different as night and day.

Brown is fast, Smith not so much. Smith can slash inside, Brown cannot has not. Smith can pass block, Brown can get run over. They both seem to be good pass receivers, although I would give KSmith the edge because he catches the ball everywhere on the field.

by NorthLeft12 on Aug 30, 2010 11:40 AM EDT up reply actions

Smith only has one up on Brown and thats pass protection...

okay two, experience. I like Smith and i would hate to see him go, but i would also hate to see the back corp take a step back by keeping someone that wasn’t worth it.

Brown caught alot of heat last year and still to date but has stepped his game up alot… could he slash inside, w time yes could he pass block, w time yes. He is still learning the position which in all honesty is sad but has took a gaint step forward from last year. The reason i say sad is b/c rb is the easiest position to adjust to coming from college to pro.

He was more of a slot receiver in his offense in college than a RB, he had like 81 reeptiosn or something in one year.

If you read that you understand that Brown was always going to take time to develop. He was a 6th round pick you don’t usually find immediate impact players that late in the draft. I would agree though that he is a very different player from Kevin Smith. I think he is ideal to be a 3rd on depth chart, change of pace back and kick returner. I do not think he is really cut out to be a platoon type of back though. I do think Felton is ideal for that. He is a perfect change of pace back to compliment Best. Kevin Smith nor Morice Morris nor DeDe Dorsey are much of a change of anything either. IMO all they are is slower, weaker, not as powerful when you compare them to either Best or Felton. That being said I think Kevin is the most worth keeping around in case anything happens to Best. We would take a severe hit if he had to start over best but he can carry the load if needed. Morris though I like him has no upside at all whatsoever and though I wish we would have traded him to San Diego I didn’t want Cromartie. I see Cromoartie take plays off and see him give up on tackles because he don’t want to get his weak ass hurt. He wont last on the Jets either, just a band-aid for them while Wilson develops and Revis gets paid.

How about

we all stop bitching about something that’s out of our hands anyways and see how Smith plays this season? I know, actually waiting to see how a guy plays in his new role before jumping to conclusions is crazy talk, but maybe we could actually do that for once.
