Dominic Raiola To Ndamukong Suh: 'Just Sign The Damn Contract Already'

Lions center Dominic Raiola was asked about fellow former Nebraska Cornhusker Ndamukong Suh today, and his response sounded like something you might hear from a fan.

"I haven't even sent him a text or anything, but I'd like to tell him, 'Just sign the damn contract already. You are missing some good things here,'" Raiola said after Suh missed his fourth day and sixth practice session.

"I understand the business side of it, but when you are talking $40 million, $42 million, $43 million, I don't know what the big difference is," Raiola said. "Any way you cut it, after taxes, that's $20 million. So you've got to get that name signed and get out here."

Amen to that.

Exactly

I am not saying that a couple of million is nothing .. but fighting for 2 Mill in a contract is actually 1 mill in hand …

Trust me .. It’s his agents …

$40/41 Million Guaranteed and 6 years @ 76/77 Million seems doable by both siade

Damn! Just posted this as a comment in the Favre thread.

I think most people agree with Raiola here. Would be real nice if he would just go ahead and sign. Say F it to whatever they are haggling over and get it done.

Although I think Dominic needs to brush up on his tax knowledge a little bit.

True at times

But no matter how they spin it … Any money he gets from the lions will be taxable in the US …

by Libran on Aug 3, 2010 4:51 PM EDT up reply actions

And Dom is a team guy ..

Suh has already hurt his value by a couple of Mill in endorsements and abilities ..

More practice with teammates leads to a better player .. and more ad money .. He has already lost a couple of Mill in value due to his holdout ..

by Libran on Aug 3, 2010 1:11 PM EDT reply actions

He needs to sign but,

he hasn’t lost million in endorsements because of this. Get real. It hasn’t even been that big of a national story, and even if it becomes more of one, all that is doing is getting his name out there more.

If the holdout extends into weeks in length, then you might see Nike start to get annoyed.

by Grrranderson on Aug 3, 2010 1:14 PM EDT up reply actions

Maybe .. Maybe Not

His value is based on his image and his play making abilities .. You think he didn’t think of his image before donating ? His image has taken a bad hit with fans and teammates but his agent probably told him he can repair that.

His image might rebound with his play .. but he would have been a better player with an even better image by reporting on time .. would have been a better player … That time is lost forever and that IMO has hurt his future income ..

It's hard for me to pass judgement

on anyone involved in the contract negotation with out knowing the details of it. I just hope Suh signs soon.

It's hard for me to care

about a contract negotiation for more money in a year than I’ll probably make in a lifetime. Just take a $1 less than Stafford and get your butt into camp, Mr. Suh.

you gotta love Raiola

it’s really easy to pass judgment. i’m pretty sure he is getting a square offer from the Lions. just sign the damn contract—he is bracketed by signings on both sides so this shouldn’t be rocket science. he contract should be closer to McCoy’s than Bradford’s.

Suh’s absence is hurting his team. he is missing valuable time. we need him to hit the ground running and contribute from his first snap. he might be the Calvin Johnson of our defense.

Not that I'm one...

…to defend Dom (I may be the single biggest opponent of his typically vocal opinions), but if I had to guess the quote was taken slightly out of context. He said something very similar in an interview with Terry Foster and Darren McCarty after practice yesterday (compliments of 97.1 The Ticket), but it came off a lot less critical of Suh than I’m guessing this will.
I’m sure Dom is not the only player anxious to get the kid in pads, and we know that the coaching staff is a little disappointed. However, I’m sure most of his teammates understand the business side of the NFL a lot more than any of us do. While I’m sure everyone wants this kid in camp, I doubt there’s a lot of legitimate animosity towards him in the locker room at this point. Maybe if this thing stretches out a couple more weeks and players that have been in camp from the beginning start losing reps and playing time to the kid there will be, but at this point this is just par for the course with elite talent and I’m sure most of the guys understand that.
The bottom line is that the reason we were all so excited (including the Lions players/staff) to land Suh in the draft is the same reason that he hasn’t signed his contract yet. The talent and potential are there for this guy to do some great things before his time is up here, and his agents are doing what they feel is in his best interest as well as their own. The more money he makes the more money they make, and while a long holdout will affect Suh’s development, it may be worth it in their eyes or even his if it means a couple million dollars more.
So even though I think this was probably taken out of context, it has the potential to rub people the wrong way. Hopefully it doesn’t affect team chemistry, but as usual…Dom was probably better off just keeping his mouth shut.

Team Chemistry?

The only team chemistry being affected here is all the other players that are out there in the hot weather busting their asses while Suh sits comfortably because he wants a couple million on top of the already obscene sum of 40 or 41 million of guaranteed money he is being offered. Most of those other players will never sign a contract anywhere near that total, let alone guaranteed money.

I would not blame any of the Veteran players if they were upset with him right now. Dom is a man and has proved his value to the team and his love of the game. If anyone is going to call Suh out, I have no problem with Dom being the one to do it.

I really think this is blown out of proportion...

…several teammates have stated that they’re just anxious and excited to have him in camp, but not one of them has stated it out of frustration that they’re out “busting their asses while Suh sits comfortably”. Even during the interview yesterday Dom said he understands that there is a business side to this. Even Vanden Bosch had this to say:

“You’d love to have him here,” said Lions defensive end Kyle Vanden Bosch after Suh missed his second day of training camp Sunday. “We saw how talented he is and what he can do for this team. It’d be nice to have him here. We’re going to welcome him when he gets here. He’s going to be a big-time playmaker for this team so the sooner he can get here the better.”

I think the fans are the ones most miffed by this holdout. As far as his teammates go, they’re just hoping to get him here, get him practicing and get him working on helping this team win. If he is in camp by the end of the week it will all blow over quickly if he’s out there working as hard as the rest of his teammates.

Hell yeah Dom

Say what you might about him but Dominic always finds a way to say what everyone else is thinking.

Take the damn 40 or 41 million, its a shit load of money, sign the contract and get your overpaid ass in practice.

If it turns out to be true that he is holding out for a two or three million, my already tarnished opinion of him will fade more.

Lions fans deserve better than being the laughing stock of the NFL. Lets all hope they are heading in the right direction finally.

Quoted from the Freep.com

"Of course you want to see him in here," Raiola said. "I understand the business side of it. But you’re talking in the 40 millions. I think you’ve got to get the name signed already, right?

"I think he’s the second (overall) pick, I think he needs to go ahead and tell his agents that, ‘Look, I want to sign and get into camp.’ I think 40 million, 42, 43 million, I don’t know what’s the big difference, you know what I’m saying? Any way you cut it, after taxes, that’s 20 million. I think you’ve got to get that name signed."

That's what I'm saying

When I’ve argued that Suh is in the wrong for this holdout, I’ve mentioned multiple times that it’s affecting the other guys in the locker room, too. Not sure why people didn’t seem to understand that, but here’s your proof.

by motown313 on Aug 3, 2010 2:39 PM EDT reply actions

Hopefully this doesnt piss Suh off as Dom will be blocking him in camp...lol

Maybe Dom saying something was the right person for the job i might get suh mad enough that he wants to come to practice just to put it to Dom

by perfectlions on Aug 3, 2010 2:49 PM EDT reply actions

Good For Raiola to speak up, however being an undersized C and probably gonna have to face him up in camp and practice I dont know how much I’d wanna tick the guy off but at same time it makes Suh put a little juice behind him if he takes this personal. Now i see why we didnt go after Albert but did we need to when the kid already has the mentality so to speak or at least thats what he’s showing .. i dont think it d have mattered now aside from EGO…

As a fan of the game in general this is the very reason you can be assured a Rookie salary wage is implemented and it should be one of the first things they agree to beyond their other matters w/ the union and owners.

Not being funny here but if reports on Farve are TRUE … and it STICKS thru season … SUH Get ur ARSE in CAMP NOW …. seriously. This just gave Detroit at least one more win (7-9 instead of 6-10) w/ those bubble games we could win (playoffs?!) its important you get it all in now learn what you need and perfect your style and skill period.

Have not tured on Suh but its nice to see Dom say something to maybe push the kid a little.

The real culprit here...

…is the lack of a Rookie Salary Wage implemented by the league (as JaiGaiaAries, and several other people have mentioned in the past). I can’t fault any man trying to get paid as much as he feels that he is worth. The reality is, as long as someone is willing to pay you what you want, then you are worth every penny. Suh has worked very hard to be in this position, and while he will probably end up getting paid more per season than most of us will in a lifetime, he’s just doing what he feels is best for him. Until they change the rules, teams will continue to pay absurd amounts of money for all of these rookies. It’s like the saying goes, “Why do people do what they do…because they can!”

Please Notice That...

…it’s not just POD newcomers who are getting restless now. Schwartz is, Dom is, others will follow. When ESPN replaces the Favre Watch with the Suh Watch, the league will begin to start laughing again. We don’t need that. Are we all agreed?

I can’t remember who called a holdout when they learned the names of Suh’s agents—maybe it was a guy on Roar Report too—but whoever made the call needs to be upgraded to columnist/commentator. They really nailed it.

We all should thank Dom

I don’t think it’s a coincidence that Suh signed the same day that Dom made these comments, particularly when you consider that Raiola is a team captain and fellow Cornhusker. He wouldn’t have made those comments if other guys in the locker room didn’t share his sentiment. He very well may have provoked Suh to sign the offer on the table.
