Lions WRs Look Strong, Deep
Perhaps spending all those draft picks on wide receivers is finally going to pay off in some kind of really odd, indirect fashion. This season, the receivers are looking very active and strong, looking to help free up Megatron and allow Stafford to look elsewhere once in a while when he drops back. Tom Kowalski wrote an article about his observations here. It is just me, or are the Lions turning a lot of heads already in training camp that they don't normally. Again, I am staying grounded and realize that they are a year or two away from serious playoff contention. But they are going to surprise some people if teams aren't careful. And by the way, on another positive note, Chris Houston and Jonathan Wade have both been mentioned by Calvin Johnson as having impressed him to some degree in the coverage abilities. Definitely good to hear, at least.

If he doesn't get cut...
derrick Williams. And IMO it would be silly if they DID cut him. I think he has more skill than we got to see last year. Our QB situation was less than adequate. Yea, Staff showed some glimmer of hope for the future. But he was still learning and I think a lot of our WRs suffered because of it. Should be a different story this year. Staff will know the book a lot better.
I dont see him ever being a wideout persay.....
but slot receiver could be right up his alley. i could turn out to be wrong though.
I agree with you though....
I think our WR corps is a lot better than people want to give them credit for. I think there are some CBs in the league who will be smelling the faint scent of burnt hair after getting torched. Maybe not every play, but definitely more than we have seen since Herman Moore, Johnny Morton, Barry Sanders and Brett Perriman were here.
And also our running game improving should actually take a 5th defensive back out of the secondary more often too. They will HAVE to respect us at the line or get torched for a big yardage run or a score. We have that ability on our team now. This should free up either a TE or two, or a slot receiver to put up some decent numbers.
And when that strategy hits a wall…which it will, this is the NFL. We have one of the best receivers in the game and a more than serviceable counterpart on the outside. We really cannot go wrong with our offense…Its the other side of the ball that I worry about….lol
BTW….good post man..I like reading your stuff….its good.
CLF....
thanks for the laugh man…I needed it today.
G. None of the above
The #3 target will be either 1) A running back or 2) A Tight End
Oh you didn't know?? You're ass better CALLLLLLLL SOMEBODY!!!!!
it actually could be corps or core in this instance
either would be fine, just different meanings.

I voted D Williams.
But I guess it’s up to him to make the team. We have competent people making personnel decisions and if D Will gets cut it’s on him entirely for not playing well enough to make the team.

BJ Butterhands
Sounds like a gay porn name. I would really like the Lions to not have players on their roster that deserve such nicknames . . .

And i hate to agree
But I think BJ will make the team as the #3, from everything i have been hearing in camp, he looks really good.

Im going with butterhands....
In all reality Im going wih sheffler…Alot of Lions fans are underrating sheffler, Im in the army and stationed in colorado springs so Ive seen quite a bit of sheffler and he is going to single handedly turn some heads on that offense this year…He’s probably the 3rd best TE I saw last year in the NFL behind Gates and Gonzalez…When it comes to a 3rd WR option for Stafford, Im going with Butterballs cuz he is a veteran presence and that goes a long way with trust from a QB.

I don't know about that
BJ had an abnormally bad season last year, he’s never played that poorly in his career. His best years were when he played the slot for Arizona, and now that he’s back in that role we should get a lot more out of him. One thing’s for sure, if he does end up playing as crappy as he did last year, he’s gonna be gone at the end of the season.
I agree with KDawg though...
If you had listed a TE or a RB i would have gone with that instead. Probably either Sheff or Best would have gotten my vote. But you didn’t include that as a choice because we are talking about WRs. Sheesh..some peoples kids, right?
I think we will see very little slot receiver sets. I think we will see a LOT of 2 TE sets though. And if the middle is not there we will see a lot of dumping to the tailback in the flat like we used to see with Barry. Best can make things happen in a hurry and that is why he is here now.
Earlier i picked Williams and I still hold to that. I think Bryant Johnson is to prone to dropping sure thing balls. However, I also think Tim Toone will help in some capacity if he makes the final cut ( I think he will). He will return punts and do a damn fine job of it too…lol
If all this works out…look for Calvin to have a big year. If defenses are made to respect the rest of our weapons..they will not be paying as close attention to him. I see 1300 yds and 12 TDs as wholly possible again this year.
LETS GET IT DONE LIONS!!!!!!!!
Ok damn it....
If I HAD to pick from the 5 choices given, it would be Bryant Johnson hands down. Derrick Williams is not going to get the job done, Northcutt is washed up, and Clark and Toone are not going to get enough playing time at WR to make a difference. BJ is the best option of that list, but like I said he will not be the #3 option for Stafford. We will see a LOT more passes to Jahvid Best/Kevin Smith and Brandon Pettigrew/Tony Schefler than we will see to the slot receiver this year, unless they play Burleson in the slot and BJ is WR2. Bryant Johnson will be a starter, there is no doubt in my mind about that. He will see his share of passes, and he will probably have somewhere in the range of 35-40 catches, just like last year. He most certainly will not break any records, and I believe that our RBs will get more catches than he will. In fact, I would be willing to bet that if Pettigrew stays healthy this year, he and Scheffler will combine for around 100 catches, while the RBs (Best and Smith) will combine for 60-80.
I would like to see CJ catch 100 balls this year alone, and I would like to see Burleson in the 60-80 range as well. I believe that is completely possible, while still allowing BJ to get his 35-40 catches in traffic. That is why I said none of the given options will emerge as a #3 target, because I think the 3rd WR will be the last option, and I see the RBs and TEs as part of the “receiving corps”.

having an identity crisis today…lol. I used to post here under my yahoo ID. For some reason I logged in under it today…hmm.
I just figured you were talking to yourself
it’s ok, I do that too. I usually avoid arguments that way. And when I do get into an argument with myself, I usually end up winning most of the time. It is pretty damn embarassing when I do lose an argument with myself though.
I think I need to hit the bowl again.

I expect Bryant Johnson will be the #3 receiver
He can be effective, if he doesn’t drop the ball. But I expect that the TE’s and the RB will be of more use than the #3 WR.
RIP Robyn Bailey 1961 - 2010. I love you mum.
From how it sound im going w/ Bryant Johnson, the reason for this is another year in the offense, healthy instead of nagging injuries the whole time, and it seems he figured out what he was doing wrong to some degree and has looked impressive so far.
I want them to develop Williams he has the speed you would want from a good slot receiver but he seems like he needs more time to transition to he NFL, maybe next year he’ll get that or by end of this year he’ll step up. However since u asked about “WR corps” i went w/ BJ but to be honest i think its going to be Scheffler followed by Pettigrew then Johnson or whoever plays that 3rd WR spot.
