The Breakthrough of Cliff Avril
As long as I have been coming to P.O.D. for my Lions updates and community, I have never really been able to truly gauge how the Lions fanbase felt about him as a whole. I have, for the most part, been very interested in what Cliff Avril could become for us since he was drafted in the 3rd round just two years ago. Both of his pro years have seen him having to adjust to two different schemes, which never really allowed him to get comfortable. Still, even with the adjustment and playing on one of the porous defenses in the NFL, Avril's numbers went up while playing in 2 less games. He, thus far, has been good for 5 sacks a year. Decent, but not great.
Personally, I feel that Cliff Avril is perfectly situated for a breakout year. I am not an Avril apologist, but with the likes of Kyle Vanden Bosch, Ndamukong Suh, and Corey Williams lining up next to him, he will be able to rush the QB with the most confidence he's had in his brief pro career. I have been following Avril (along with many other Lions) on Twitter since the end of last season; all offseason, he has been chomping at the bit for the 2010 season. He has mentioned how it is a "do or die" season for him....and how badly he wants to prove to the Lions, their fans, and himself that he can be an outstanding defensive lineman. I believe it is possible.
I foresee, barring any injuries that would change things dramatically, that Avril will have a breakthrough year in 2010 and help this defense out more than people are realizing. Granted, much of this has to do with the fact that he'll be playing alongside some of the most talented guys we've had on that line in a while. But my trust in Avril comes from his motivation...his determination...his mentality...and his ability to see that he really needs to prove himself.
My hope is that I am right...because if I am, we have a very solid defensive four that will help out an otherwise questionable secondary to no end. And maybe........just maybe.....we can do something unexpected this year. Everyone is expecting improvement.....5-11.....6-10....even 7-9 or 8-8. But if the right momentum comes our way because of the right team mentality....if we come out of the gates running hard....we could make a statement.
I'm not drinking the kool-aid just yet....I'm just hoping that the Lions players can experience what they so desperately need to feel. Confidence. A winning mentality. An expectation to win. And some of our players, including Avril, realizing their potential. If they do, we are in for a fun ride to the top....gradual as it may be.

I have thought sense before the draft
The number 1 benifactor to Kyle and corey will be Avril. Less focus on him and Suh just takes more off of him. Avril could end up are best lineman this year simply because he will get one on one with a tackle. Gaurds will be focused on the DT posistion and doubles on KVB.

Yeah, definitely.
Bet they overlook Avril from time to time because of the big names.
USE THE SCHWARTZ!!!
Oh yeah
He’ll improve greatly I believe, with his 3 line mates.
There’s enormous pressure taken off him, not put on.
I’ve said before, he’s going to get some work because a lot of teams
are going to be running, and rolling to his side, to avoid Suh/KVB.
6+ sacks should be in the offering as well.
Expectations don't produce!
Marinelli
as I recall, Marinelli spent a lot of individual time on Avril—teaching him how to use his hands. He must have seen something in him. If there is one thing I liked about Marinelli is that he favored character guys. Avril is a character guy. I remember watching Avril injure himself chasing and diving for a guy down 30-40 yds downfield. There is a little KVB in him.
Schwartz is a great coach. I think he recognized that a guy like Avril just desperately needed guys on the player-side like KVB and DeVries to be around this year and show him how to be a pro. I wonder if this came up in the Schwartz/KVB drunken make-out fest night we signed KVB—that is, a little discussion about his role as a mentor to some good guys (Hill, Suh, Avril) that would be likely to positively respond to KVB’s obsessive drive and motivational hoorah rather than mock him and distance themselves from him and shy away from his demonic competitiveness and severe work ethic. I could see other types of players not responding and not getting up to work with a KVB.
Not just the character thing and motivation, but I think our biggest improvements in talent have come on the DL interior which should really boost our DE play. I look forward to seeing Avril respond magnificiently this year as he has the size and tools to play his position. The sky is the limit for this guy right now.
+!
I think you hit the nail on the head. Schwartz went out and got a motivator for the defensive line. I really think that KVB is the real deal and I think that the rest of the line feels the same way.

I liked Marinelli....
And for the exact reasons you stated. That guy had balls. Every week he would get up there and be Detroits tackling dummy for the media.
Anyhow..I think Avril has a hell of a season this year. We are finally going to what we have now. Guys who had no one to turn to last year, will have some real help this year. Cliff and a lot of other guys on that line are going to look a lot better because of it.
I respect Marinelli, too
every coach that was fired at the end of that season just released a statement. Rod showed up to the presser and looked at every reporter in the eye and took whatever questions were fired at him. He was a lousy general but a fantastic leutenant. I feel bad for saying this because I don’t wish failure on anyone, but I hope he sucks as a DC at least 2 times this upcoming season.

Fact is
Rod is respected as one of the best D line coaches in the NFL. He is a good coach at a point he just isn’t a head coach. Anyone even Bill Walsh would have been fired for that humiliating season. He is a players coach and does know what he’s talking about. As far as leading warriors into battle thats more of a Jim Schwartz thing.

I agree with you on that Marinelli is a good D line coach and not a Head Coach.
I’ve always loved his attitude… unfortunately it takes more than that. I remember watching him in the last few games of the season and how confused he looked. I think that he just isn’t able to handle all the different things that a Head Coach needs to do.

I thought he just looked like a dummy
His great downfall was believing his friends knew how to coach. I like my friends, but I don’t think I would hire them all as my staff.
oops....
^ we are finally going to know what we have now.
Good post Twon
Dude will definitely have a breakout year, and I’ve been telling people this for some time. He’s never had any help on the D-line, now that he’s playing next to quality players he should be able to show us what he can really do.
I'm optimistic about Avril
I’ve heard he’s bulked up. Like everybody else has stated, learning from KVB is only going to make him better.
I’m optimistic about Jason Hunter, too. I think there will be no drop-off when he is rotated in.

Good point
Jason Hunter seems really underrated, he should benefit just as much as Avril from playing next to C-Will, Suh and KVB.
you are only as good as the company you carry
and i feel the other three fellas will be o.k. if ya know what i mean
i think. . .
avril will not only benefit from who is beside him. . .i really think Kris Kocurek will get the most out of the d-line. . .watching his intensity during the senior bowl practices gave me a good feeling about the development of our d-line
+1
thats a good point about the D line coach

Agreed
I was sad to see Karm go (and even more sad about his death), but I think we have a good successor in Kocurek.

I forgot about how impressive our coaches were in the senior bowl.

I have high hopes for Avril
Always have. He shown us that he can get to the QB, he just hasn’t ‘broken’ out yet. Maybe it is this year, with the talent that’s now around him.
RIP Robyn Bailey 1961 - 2010. I love you mum.
Will he get chances to do well in pass rush situation. Yes, of course, but pass rush isn’t the issue. 5.5 sacks in 12 games is about 8 sacks in 16 games. Thats more than good enough pass rush. The problem has been and will be his run defense. Suh, Corey and KVB are stout run defenders. If there is one thing we can count on those three to do well, its defending the run. That means teams will more towards Avril like they did last season. His inability to defend the run got him benched last year. If he can improve on his run D, then he is going to be one of the bright stars on this team.
The beginning of the end of the misery
If he fails... is Kalimba available?
I jest… That said, Avril’s numbers are respectable, but he really has been a one-dimensional player in that he really didn’t stop the run, nor is he used in that capacity. He has all the ability in the world to be a Dwight Freeney type pass rusher and I hope with some favorable talent he will be able to put the pieces together

Lets face it....Avril is nothing more than a glorified William Gay
He will get you somewhere between 4-7 sacks a year, and nothing more. Hopefully one of the other 3 guys, or Jason Hunter, can come through and get double digit sacks for us, but if you are counting on them from Avril, it is going to be a long year! The guy had 9 sacks his senior season in high school as a DE. 6 his best year in college. And how many are you expecting from him in the NFL?
