Lions Training Camp Notes: Ndamukong Suh Edition

  • Ndamukong Suh practiced with the first-team defense yesterday. That meant that Sammie Hill was demoted to the second team, allowing Suh and Corey Williams to practice together as the D's defensive tackles.
  • Suh's conditioning test was the same as the one Albert Haynesworth has failed multiple times over the last week. Suh's times were 65 and 67 seconds, although it isn't known how much time he had to rest in between runs.
  • During the test, his teammates were cheering him on, and upon completion, he got to carry the helmets of Kyle Vanden Bosch and Cliff Avril. Even though his contract is enormous, he is still technically a rookie.
  • Vanden Bosch also gave Suh a pep talk at some point during practice yesterday. At this point I would be surprised if KVB isn't a captain, because every day we hear about how great of a leader he is.
  • Suh weighed in at 305 pounds, but he joked after practice that he probably was down to 300 after sweating so much from the hot and humid weather.
  • Suh battled with Stephen Peterman for much of today's practice.
  • Jim Schwartz said "there is concern" over players missing time, but he thinks Suh will catch up on everything pretty quickly.
  • NFL.com has video of Suh talking after Wednesday's afternoon practice.
  • Dominic Raiola was asked yesterday about what he would tell Suh when he arrived to camp.
'I'll tell him congratulations. No hard feelings. Finally, that's what I've been looking forward to, him doin his thing.'
Raiola, of course, made no bones about the fact that he wanted Suh to sign his contract and get to camp.

Vanden Bosch, Stafford and Hanson will be Captains I bet.

Thats why suh had to be in camp not as much for the work outs but its a team building enviorment as it looks like today he was treated like a rookie in camp which is good for him. My only worry is the Facts on delmas injury. His absence will KILL us.

Suh is one lean 300 pounder...

Most guys weighing in at 300 have the big guts and stuff.

Anyway, it’s good to hear that Suh is assimilating into the team well, plus it looks as though KVB has really taken him under his wing. I like positive news.

Of everything acomplished this off season

I truly think KVB is the best for the team. His veteran presence, incredible work ethic, drive and passion for the game seem to be rubbing off on other players. He is leading by example. This guy is going to be more than just a pile of sacks come seasons end. He is going to end up being the heart of this team. I can already see it.

You can never underestimate what a positive role model can do for the younger players.

well

Megatron had to compete with Roy Williams and Mike Furrey, who led the NFC is reception the year before. No such concern for Suh

I am very happy to see Suh practicing

I am also happy to see that Corey Williams and Suh look to be the starters at DT….WOOT! That means that Corey Williams must be looking pretty good in the 4-3…where he is comfortable! I hope he returns to the same form as he was in Green Bay and that Suh is the monster we are all hoping for.

I am also very happy with what I am hearing from KVB’s leadership ability. He is a very positive role model for our young defensive players. I am a bit confused as to what Raiola thinks he is trying to do…since I have never heard him act like he was a leader until more recently…but as long as he directs it at the relevant teammates and not the fans, I guess I don’t mind. I just think he is a bit of a D-bag, and I wish someone would deck him since I can’t. I know a lot of you guys think we should thank Raiola for his “help”, as a team captain, in getting Suh signed. I do not see his big mouth flapping as having much of an effect on anything that Suh did…sorry, but that’s my opinion.

I still hold a grudge against Raiola for the way he treated fans last season. And regardless of the fact that coaches have given him so much praise, and the team has supported him by voting him as captain, I just do not think he is that good. I pay close attention to the offensive line when I watch a football game. I watch to see how well guys are getting off the ball, whether they are standing straight up or staying low (low man wins), if they are using their hands properly (hands inside the shoulders and under the pads), and whether or not they are moving their feet with a wide base. Dom does a decent job getting off the ball (LOL…he is the center, so I sure hope he knows when the ball is being snapped), using his hands properly, and moving his feet with a wide base, but I feel that he plays too upright, which is disadvantageous to the proper use of leverage, and this is why I think we see him get pushed around a lot. I would say he is an average NFL center at best, but I hope he can step up HIS game and be better than average. I just think he needs to focus less on what everyone else is doing, and focus more on what HE is doing.

Is there any video out yet of Suh in practice?

Dom much like Backus

has not had any sort of consistency on either side of him, worst side being his left. This year is going to say a lot about Center and LT in the immediate future for the Lions. If sims can indeed “solid” up the LG position they, Dom and J.B., should show at least mediocre improvement this season if not more. I know every one is excited about the Dline and I am no exception but I think the more interesting story for me is the Oline. These guys jobs are rapidly becoming “on the brink” with the improvements being made every where else. They either step up or get shown the door.

Exactly

I just hope that if in fact they do fail, that the blindness of “love” does not keep the coaching staff and front office from escorting the dead weight out of the lineup.

Oh you didn't know?? You're ass better CALLLLLLLL SOMEBODY!!!!!

Blindness or not

the core of the Oline is getting older. Upgrades will be needed sooner rather than later. Having Dom and J.B. at their respective positions so consistently and for so long has been a blessing. It is a pity that each of them has had little to no help around them. They really have until this year been left out in the proverbial dry.
