Lions Training Camp Notes: Injuries Beginning To Mount
- DeAndre Levy missed practice again today. Stepping in to take his spot with the first-team defense has mainly been Vinny Ciurciu and Jordon Dizon.
- Jim Schwartz tweeted yesterday that the injuries to Levy and Louis Delmas were of the "short-term" variety, but that tweet has since been deleted
- Jerome Felton is dealing with a foot sprain he suffered yesterday in practice, preventing him from finishing the session.
- Jared DeVries tweaked the knee that forced him to start camp on the PUP list. The injury happened yesterday and doesn't appear to be anything serious, but he missed this morning's practice.
- Aaron Berry injured his hamstring and may be for more than just a couple days and Jonathan Wade hurt his hip this morning. Depth at cornerback is already thin enough considering Amari Spievey has been out with a strained oblique muscle and is day-to-day.
- Mike Moore was out again on Thursday with a shoulder injury.
- Kyle Vanden Bosch got today's morning session off for rest.
- Jason Hanson's knee surgery went well and he is not even limping from it. Actually, it went so well that some players are giving Hanson grief over him missing camp and "Favre-ing it."
- Some very interesting news from Kevin Seifert:
Receiver Tim Toone flashed a couple times during the morning practice, and on one play, he put a double move on cornerback Chris Houston that left him wide open down the right sideline. This is pure amateur work, but I would put Toone no lower than fourth on the Lions' depth chart of receivers after Calvin Johnson, Nate Burleson and Bryant Johnson. I've thought he looked much smoother than 2009 draft choice Derrick Williams, and I'm wondering if Dennis Northcutt will be the odd man out.
Toone seems to be playing extremely well so far, and if I were to readjust my 53-man roster projection, I'd probably include him on there. - Perhaps even more interesting: Randy Phillips apparently played with the first-team defense today.
- On Thursday, the Lions ran plays where Jahvid Best got the ball on a pitch and threw a pass.
- SI's Damon Hack, who just visited Lions camp, thinks Matthew Stafford "looks ready to take a big step in his second year in the NFL."
- Rob Sims provided the best description I've seen so far for the kind of player Calvin Johnson is:
"He's amazing. He's like something you get in Create-A-Player mode on Madden."
He was nicknamed Megatron for a reason, after all. - Barry Sanders apparently may appear in a football movie that is shooting in Michigan.
- The owners of the Silverdome have some very interesting plans to completely renovate the Lions' former home in hopes of attracting an MLS team to Michigan. I will give them credit for thinking outside the box with their idea, but it seems a little unrealistic if you ask me.

I'd much rather see an MLS team
I’m dying for a team to get behind in that league, but the closest is Chicago and I sure as hell am not cheering for them.
USE THE SCHWARTZ!!!
i feel
exactly the same way… my roommate at IU got me to watch the mls cup and ever since then i have gained a ton of respect for soccer as a whole. i’d definitely support a detroit mls team. if they don’t get it, i’m definitely not rooting for chicago, or worst of all, columbus.
the mls has big potential if the barcelona/biggreekteamwhosenameicantthinkof game does well here in detroit. let’s see what happens… detroit apparently is in the running for an expansion team in 2012.
yeah buddy!

I have a great, great feeling about Best.
I think he’s going to be a top performer for us. Already, as a rookie, he’s turning heads. Chris Johnson 2.0? Well, way too early to tell…but we can hope. I won’t place that kind of expectation on him though.
USE THE SCHWARTZ!!!
My favorite quote out of the story about Wade, Berry, Spievey, et. al.
“It’s an NFL training camp; guys are starting to feel their groins.” Schwartz said.
Because yes, I’m a 12-year-old boy at heart.
My two favorite teams are the Tigers and Brewers. Drunk tigers. That sounds about right.

I wonder if the renovations...

While none of the injuries sound too permanent at this point, it’s a downer that so many of them are occurring this early into camp. You’d like to see the 1st team really get a chance to practice together. Still, if this were the regular season I would be that only one….maybe two…of these guys would actually be held off the field. It’s NFL “Football”, the name is derived from the injuries you get.

Playing it safe
Honestly, I think the Lions are playing it real safe with the injuries. This is a good thing. The organization has seen how injuries can seriously effect a football team, and they are being cautious as to prevent any serious harm. The reason I think this is because some of the injuries like Levy’s back, Devries’ knee tweak, and Felton’s foot sprain are stuff that high school athletes would have no problem playing with. But since these guys are all worth millions of dollars, its a good idea to make sure your investments are healthy for the long-run.
80,000 plus, that was an amazing place to see a game live
when the house was going nuts. You could actually see the concrete steps shaking from the noise. It was insane. Of course, this was in the height of Barry Sanders career.
It could also be very quiet.
Lions fans deserve better than being the laughing stock of the NFL. Lets all hope they are heading in the right direction finally.
Injuries are slightly concerning, but expected
Hopefully nothing truly long-term comes along.
