Welcome Back Football!! (I.E.: Q&A With BTSC And Me)
I know it's only Monday, and we usually wait till Wednesday to do these, but I just can't wait.
I'm so excited for the first Steelers game of the season, as I'm sure you all are excited for the first Lions game.
Let me say right out the gate, thank you for Larry Foote back.
Okay, this is the part where you ask questions, and I (or another BTSC'er) will answer them. If I don't know something, someone else will. I will tell you I don't know, as opposed to just pulling something out of my...hat.
Oh, one more thing: Please, let's keep this civil. All trash talk should be as friendly as possible, with a minimum of profanity and name calling/personal attacks.
Thanks guys!

It shouldn’t be THAT hard to do.

I was gonna say no, thank you for taking Larry Foote back. Why the hell you guys let fast willie go? seems like he could still be a great 2nd or 3rd behind mendenhall.

I think there was a little bit of bad blood
Between him and the FO/coaches. I believe I heard that FWP believed he was still capable of getting 1st back touches because of his low mileage. Additionally, Parker cannot catch for squat and his blocking is only decent. I won’t call him a one trick pony, because I believe he can hit the outside well just as well as he can be patient and slice a run up the gut. Trouble is, he was hitting that magic number for RBs and we have an old vet back who can block and catch better, but he just isn’t as fast, in Mewelde Moore.

Larry Foote is just not that good. He lost his job to a rookie on a 2-14 team. Now he might start for Pittsburgh? I see you guys having a very tough year—coming from a fan of a 2-14 team.
He won't start
He will be part of a 3 headed monster at ILB. You run a different type of D than we do and I think Foote’s strengths shine in his role in our defense. Here is a good article on the two ILBs, the “mack” and the “buck”, in the Packers/Steelers 3-4. Foote does a really good job playing the “buck” aka the banger. Essentially, the buck finds blockers and hits them to prevent them from getting to the second level and clog up holes.

I think Larry's situation
Is that he fits better in our system than yours. I could be totally wrong. I know you all hated the way he left, but we are definitely glad to have him back. Farrior is getting old and we had only one guy on the roster capable of filling in for him. With Foote we have 4 competent guys to slide into the ILB role. Additionally, it gives us leeway with OLB if Wood or Harrison went down to push Timmons to the outside (where we also have only rookie depth: Worilds, Gibson, Sly, Worthington).
In many ways, Foote was our unsung hero in the 2008 SB team.

Looks like it is going to be Lefty
The majority of us at BTSC want it to be Dixon, really badly. We believe he has a higher ceiling and can make plays with his feet and arm. Also, Ben is walking a thin line and Dixon could end up being our future starting QB (but definitely our back up long term).
However, Tomlin came out pretty early and stated that Lefty would be the starter week 1 and he has been getting more snaps in camp than Dixon. I am comfortable with it to some degree because he has more experience and a style of play more similar to Ben’s (compared to Dixon). That will allow a smoother transition back to Ben when he returns.
Also, the coaches have stated that Dixon will likely be taking snaps as a “change of pace” QB this year. That should be interesting.
The interesting thing to see will be who takes the first team snaps against you all and if it is not Ben…how long will he play since he has a 4week vacation.

Leftwich sucks
Charlie Batch is a better QB than Leftwich, and barring injury I think he is better than Dixon too.
Oh you didn't know?? You're ass better CALLLLLLLL SOMEBODY!!!!!
Hm
Batch seems to get injured doing everything in the past couple of years. He is not reliable as our #1 option. I think whoever we go with will be asked to do a lot less than Ben does and hand it off more to Mendy & Co., sort of like the Ravens game in Baltimore last year.

Not saying that Batch will start or be the backup...
Since he has only taken like 1 snap this preseason…but I think he has done a great job as the backup for you guys in the past, and he looked very good the last time he got a chance to play in the regular season (until the injury fairy came and broke his leg).
Oh you didn't know?? You're ass better CALLLLLLLL SOMEBODY!!!!!
Here's a quote for you
2010 Season Outlook
Leftwich surprisingly won the Buccaneers’ starting job out of training camp last fall, then unsurprisingly punted it away with brutal play in the season’s first three weeks. He did find himself sprung from Tampa this spring, and will compete with Dennis Dixon to be Ben Roethlisberger’s backup in 2010, which would include starting for the Steelers during Big Ben’s suspension. Pittsburgh would rather see Dixon win the gig; Leftwich is more of a backup option.

I’d like to believe that our WR group, RB, and OL is better than Tampa Bay’s. We shall see though, generally I am comfortable with what Tomlin chooses.

No
We have 4 very capable QBs on the roster. Randle El gives us a vet who knows the play book. Emanuel Sanders will likely be the #3 WR by the end of the year, but he doesnt know the playbook yet and has not taken an NFL snap. Outside of those 4 I am not super confident in anyone else.

I get it. When a team wins the biggest game of the year (no matter what sport), there is going to be a major jump in their fanbase. Which, of course, cheapens the experience for those hardcore fans that stuck through the shit times. I had to sit through SB XXX, and O’Donnell thinking that the cowboys corners were actually Steelers receivers.
How many cheat-riots fans do you think there were before Tom Brady and belli-cheat started winning championships*? Now, of course, they are all smug and snooty and think their shit don’t stink because their team has won 3 SB’s in a decade. Really?

Team of the decade
Should probably go to the Colts not the Steelers or the Pats. Yes The 1 SB ring Colts. What team has been as steady as the Colts with Manning and they made 1 smooth transition from “starvin” Marvin Harrison to Reggie as the #1 and then you look at how they made another smooth transition from 1 RB to another RB and hell 1 HC to another HC. They just seem to find a way to win 10 or more games every single year. I am A HUGE Brady fan (GO BLUE); but Peyton has not missed shit for games and has been a stall worth for the NFL not getting all caught up in the Media with dating this woman or that 1 but keeping his reputation clean and being 1 of the best QB’s of this generation.
How many lumps you want Doc?
Is Mendenhall the real deal
or do you see someone that could take carries away from him like Dwyer?
TBD
Mendenhall had a great year last year, but he still scares me with how vertically he approaches contact. It seems like he rarely squares up his shoulders and drills someone. He chooses the spin move which has earned him nicknames like “Spindenhall” and the “Spin Doctor”. Also, he does have some fumble concerns that got him benched last year.
He does offer a potential “do it all” RB though. Great runner, great hands, and a good blocker. With Ben resting the first 4 weeks, Mendy should get a lot of chances to showcase what he has.

How would you feel...
…If there was a regular season game and the Lions came out and totally destroyed the Steelers? I’m curious to see how you would react to a blowout that came from a team a lot of people will just write off as a win. Would you be embarrassed? Would you commend the Lions for doing such a great job?
Also, the Lions played the Steelers last year in week five. The Steelers beat the Lions by only a touchdown plus 2 points. We had our 2nd string quarterback and our 1st string WR, who is just a beast, went out in the first quarter. Having two very important pieces missing, do you think the Steelers would of still won, had our pieces been there?
Sorry, but teams simply don’t blow out the Steelers. All of our losses were within 7 points last year. Actually, over the last 3 seasons only 2 teams have beat the Steelers by more than 10 and that was the 16-0 Pats with the best offense in NFL history and the 13-3 Titans of 2008. If the Lions blew us out I would be absolutely shocked and embarrassed.

That's not true bro.
In the last 20 years we have had more than just Barry as a coveted player.Herman Moore was as covetted as Barry during his run of dominance in his prime. There was only 2 teams that would not have wanted Herman on thier roster and that was the 49’s because of Rice and Taylor, and the Cowgirls because they had Mike “coked up” Irvin and Alvin Harper who was a good #2 too Irvin. EVERY other team would have loved to have Moore on their roster. And Since we are talking about this AGAIN; Glover and LOMAS BROWN would have been welcomed by EVERY team during their prime years. I’d like to say Spielman as well but there was a ton of great MLB’s during his time here in Detroit.

Missing Stafford
Missing Stafford and having that pathetic waste of space Culpepper in > than Polamalu being out and still having a viable option at safety. IMO.
Unless you watched Culpepper all year last year like us Lions fans had to, nobody has any idea how pathetically bad he was and how much our offense suffered for it. Sure statistically Stafford didn’t have a great year by any means, but his ability and the threat to hit Calvin deep and his leadership and toughness couldn’t be measured by numbers. Our offense completely died when he was out.
And Tyrone Carter was a pathetic replacement for Polamalu. I am too lazy too look up the stats right now, but they were something along the lines of 8 Ints in the 5 games Troy played and only 4 in the 11 he didn’t play in. Our defense is really dependent on what Troy does because of how unpredictable he is and how fast he covers the field. We basically took our best defensive player and replaced him with a slow below average veteran. It was bad.
Stafford is definitely an upgrade over Culpepper, but he is just a rookie. We were missing the best safety in the league from our line up.
This might be an apples to oranges argument though. Agree to disagree.

I'm just saying...
The impact Stafford has on our offense and entire team is at least = to if not > than Polamalu. Stafford was only a rookie, true, but on a team that has been as bad as ours, he was the unquestioned leader and our only legitimate threat on offense.I realize how good Polamalu and how important he is, he’s a beast and he’s the only player on the Steelers I love watching play (no offense I’m just not a Steelers fan. It could be the abundance of cocky ass Steelers fans here in Toledo, OH that annoy the shit out of everyone. LOL). I just think the dropoff between our 1st and 2nd string QB’s last year was astonishing when watching the shit Culpepper did, or should I say what he didn’t and couldn’t do. Culpepper literally looked like a high school player they went and pulled off the street. Hell, we would’ve been better with an average high school QB lol.
I know it sounds pathetic that our team relied on a rookie QB so heavily, but with the lack of talent and leadership that “He Who Shall Not Be Named” left us with, that’s what happens. I just hope it’s more of an indication of how good Stafford will be rather than an indictment of how bad we were.
Anyways,I can’t wait for this fucking game on Saturday. I feel like a little kid on Christmas eve that can’t sleep knowing the presents are so close but feel so far away lol.

Also, I didn't watch many Steelers games last year
So I’m not really qualified to speak on how much Polamalu was missed, all I can do is try to relay to you how badly Stafford was missed.
Like you said, agree to disagree.

As 1 of the Die hards here
This isn’t even close guys. The Steelers missed Troy more than we missed Staff or even Calvin. While yes Staffinfection and Megatron are OUR best offencive players, they don’t even compare to what the Steelers lost when Troy went down. You are talking about a D that was as dominant as any in the league prior to Troy’s injury, then 1 single guy goes down and the Steelers are barely pedestrian on D, it’s NO contest here. With Staff and Megatron they still need the rest of the offence to be an impact; like a running game would have helped last year(just see dirty Sanchez) but when you take 1 guy out of a D and the whole thing crumbles it’s just no contest.
How many lumps you want Doc?
We weren't as good without Troy, true
But the #5 overall D in the league is hardly pedestrian.
As opposing quarterbacks crouched under center, Lambert pumped his legs up and down, thumping the turf like a war drum. He mouthed threats to opposing running backs that would make even the most hardened Catholic nun weep for humanity. He fulfilled those threats with coldblooded suplex tackles. He may or may not have chain-smoked at halftime, depending on who you ask.

I guess I should have said it differently
Teams could do what they wanted to do against the Steelers secondary without Troy out there. Yes you were still pretty good against the run but there just wasn’t that air of invincibility without Troy out there.

Hello SteelFever
First off, I am sorry that Larry Foote left Detroit with such a bad taste in his mouth. I really thought that he and Peterson would be the anchors in a stellar line backing group. After all, you got Travis Kirschke, we could have Larry Foote.
My question is on Dick LeBeau. I got to watch LeBeau play for years as a young man and really enjoyed his play. The corner duo of him and Lem Barney was the best I have ever seen. Why is it when he made his hall of fame speech, all he could talk about were the Steeler Defenses he coached?
A second question would be about big Ben. He seems to enjoy getting hit and throwing the ball while being tackled. His size and strength make him a different type of quarterback. Has there been any concussion events that we haven’t heard about? I’d hate to see him turn out like Bobby Humphries.
The curse of Bobby Layne started when Detroit shipped him off to Pittsburgh. The 50 years of playing without a great quarterback are over now, and Jim Schwartz has gone about replacing Bobby Layne. I think its time for some good midwestern football. I’m happy the Steelers are on the schedule.
Tony
If they cut me, I bleed Honalulu blue and silver.
Ox
I can’t speak for LeBeau. I think he just loves his players like a family and felt the need to talk about them.
Has there been any concussion events that we haven’t heard about?
Ben Roethlisberger’s concussion last year was the final straw that led the NFL to make the “sit out one game” rule on concussions. Ben has had a few others, I know he had one against the Browns before the POs in 2008, he definitely had to have got one during the motorcycle crash, and he is rumored to have gotten one or two in college (no evidence behind that though)

Losing Ben isn't even going to effect you guys...
Your team wins strictly because of defense…Ben gets way to much credit for your success!! Now not saying Ben isn’t any good, cuz I think he is a very good QB, but the main reason why you guys win is because of defense. Now when you guys pull out with a winning record without Ben, I can already see the annoying headlines, " OMG, Tomlin is such a great coach, he figured out a way to win without Ben, he’s a genius, he should be coach of the year!" Poo on that nonsense, you guys will win without Ben all because your defense is sick, not because someone stepped in and tore it up, not because Tomlin is the best coach ever and not because “Spindenhal” is gonna run all over the place! Your defense will be the difference and again will not get ALL the credit like they deserve!
by LionsAreMySpouse on Aug 10, 2010 12:15 PM EDT reply actions
I agree with LionsaremySpouse on this.
Ben gets way to much credit for the Steelers success. Ben holds the ball WAY too long and isn’t the best passer, the Steelers win in the trenches more than in the air, Ben has not won a SB on his arm yet. Yes you can say that the catch in the Cardinals game was great; and it was; that game was not won on BEN’s arm. neither was the SB win in Detroit, that was won on the ground (and by BAD officiating). The Steelers success has ALWAYS been a better than average ground attack and a dominant D it was in the 70’s and it still is today. And anyone who say’s otherwise is not watching football games.
How many lumps you want Doc?
Yeah I am going to have to disagree with you
Ben is a really good QB. His accuracy has improved every year in the NFL and his QB rating is always top end. The Steelers have not been a “trench” team since the 2005 SB. The line has taken a leap backward and we simply don’t punch teams int he mouth anymore on offense.
Ben may not have won SB XL on his arm, but without him we do not make it to that SB. Ben was absolutely lights out amazing leading the first team in NFL history to the promise land. He did have a bad SB, but still made some tremendous plays, like converting that 3rd and 26.
I really do not understand how someone could say that SB XLIII was not won on his arm. Down 3 points with just over 2 minutes left he drives his team down the field and scores. 6/8, 83 yards and a TD plus 4 yards rushing.
the Steelers success has ALWAYS been a better than average ground attack
Our rush offense was ranked 23rd in the league in 2008 and gained only 58 yards in the SB compared to 256 on Ben’s arm.

Johnny
You can take that stat and twist it any way you want. Since Cowher retired the steelers are trying to catch up with the whole AIR attack that is the modern NFL, but the reason the Steelers HAD to throw the ball was 1: Mendenhall has fumbleitis. 2:Your top RB going into last year was coming off of an injury and FAST Willie wasn’t as FAST as he was the prior year. 3: you guys were not getting those good yards on first and second downs so you HAD to throw the ball all over the field. Since I was a kid the Steelers mentality was and still is RUN FIRST! And like you said the guys up front just are not getting the push that you are use to.It’s odd how 1 guy (Fanica) help that line together. But Ben still isn’t as good as you are implying he is.Better than over half the league . . .maybe; but not in the cream of the crop class like you are implying. He reminds me of a mix between P Manning and Ryan Leif! Can ball but doesn’t know how to stay out of trouble!
How many lumps you want Doc?
It’s odd how 1 guy (Fanica) help that line together.
It wasn’t one guy. Between the 2005 and 2008 SB teams we lost starting LT- Marvel Smith, C Hartings, RG Simmons, and Faneca. We went from 3 first round draft picks on the line to 0. This team’s mentality simply is not run first anymore. Bruce Arias loves to pass and it was hard to fight it last year when we had two SB WRs, a stud TE, and an amazing rookie WR. The Steelers dropped back to pass over 100 times more than they handed it off last year.
You can say Ben is not a good QB all you want, but you simply are not right. I am trying to put that as nicely as I can, but that is all I have. One of 5 QBs with an above 100 QB rating last year, also top 5 in comp%, 2nd in Y/A, top 10 in TDs and top 10 in yards. Also, I can’t find the source right now, but I remember someone saying Ben lead the league in 4th quarter comebacks by a good margin since he entered the league.
Him getting in trouble of the field has absolutely nothing to do with his skill on the field. Irrelevant argument.

Actually it IS relevant
A guy can be as gifted as they come but if he can’t get on the field because the commisioner says he can’t play it then becomes relevant. I’ll give you Ben is 1 of the better QB’s in the league, I guess, but he can not simply light it up like Brees/Manning/Brady/Rivers/Rogers/(I hate this one) Favre. think fantasy football here when I say this, he is a second teir quarterback at best. Not trying to bust balls cause in real football he get’s the job done as I argued to the “who Dat” nation pre-draft Ben has more rings than almost every QB playing today and yes that put’s him above the likes of Manning;Favre;Brees;Rivers;Rogers. And now that Warner has retired I beleave that only the golden boy has more rings than Ben so when it counts he gets the job done but in terms of being a leader and a point scorer he isn’t in the same catagory as the above mentioned. Let me ask you in this way;IF you were starting a brand new franchise today; who would you choose as your QB?? Would it be Ben?? NO. It would be a guy like Rivers/Rogers/(hopefully)Stafford. I would take Ryan from ATL if it was me I personnally think he has done more with less than all of the above mentioned. Brees/Brady/Manning are all a little too old to count on for a long period of time and Rivers I think has benefitted from a lot of talent around him. I like Rogers but damn has he taken a beating in the last year.Woops getting off topic. Ben holds the ball too long like I said before fumbles a little too much from the games I get too see him play and he has off-field issues like every other year, so I would not take him and I think he is over rated, weather it’s crashing a motorcycle, raping a woman in the bathroom, it just seems like the guy can’t keep his nose clean.
How many lumps you want Doc?
oh p.s. Johnny
I knew that you lost more guys than just Fanicaon the O-line but I did NOT know it was almost every single guy I only could think of Fanica and Hartings (former Lion?? Jeff Hartings???)

He asked me a question and I answered honestly.
I think you guys have some good talent and you are on the right track of rebuilding, but all of the pieces are not there yet. On the other hand, the Steelers are a team separated only 1 year from a SB, perennially have a top 5 defense, and have pro bowl talent at a lot of positions.
It’s not an insult, just how I feel about the question.

I thought it was a fair response (when I actually saw it...lol)
If I were a Steeler’s fan, and my team (who has been just plain outstanding for a very long time) was beaten BADLY by a team who has not done SHIT in nearly 20 years now (The Lions went to the NFC Championship game in 1991), I believe I would be shocked and AMAZED. I would not be embarrassed as a fan however, as the embarrassment would (and should) fall to the players and coaches.
Hell, as a LIONS fan for my entire life, I would STILL be shocked and amazed if we came out and blew out the Steelers (in a regular season game).
There is no reason to get upset and pissed off at these guys L.A.M.S…they are just giving their honest opinions and doing what they were invited by Sean to do. They are not smack talking or trying to belittle us here. They have spoken the truth as far as I have seen, or at least what they believe the truth of the matter is. I can’t fault them for that, and we can’t fault them because of the fact that our team has sucked pretty consistently for the last 50+ years. That’s just the facts man…it is what it is. I love the Lions, and while I find it frustrating that we can’t seem to get a team on the field that can win, that is not the fault of people from other fan bases.
The truth of the matter is that we are coming along well…just like these guys mentioned. We are not there just yet, and we are not going to break records and win playoff games this year. If we DID…then WE would have something to be shocked and amazed about. I think we have another year or two before we will have a shot at the playoffs. We are missing too many pieces still. That said, I look forward to seeing the PROGRESS that we should be making this year, and I look forward to the WINS that we will have this year! GO LIONS!

I expect them to get significant special teams time
and that’s about it.
Maybe Emmanuel Sanders can leapfrog ARE into the #3 WR position, and it’s possible Pouncey could be starting at guard (or center) before the end of the season.
Jason Worilds and Thad “The Impaler” Gibson show a whole lot of “I want to be on the active roster” attitude this camp. Both put up great showings during the “backs on backers” drills last week.
Damon Cromarti-Smith is looking like he’ll live up to the family name.
Jonathan Dwyer isn’t in NFL shape yet, but looks solid in RB drills these last couple days.
Rookies on our team can usually only make the 53 playing on special teams, unless there’s injuries that make them step up. Like Evander “Ziggy” Hood last year.

What he said
Pouncey would have been a starter at RG day one if Colon had not been injured. I don’t think Tomlin wants to put two guys who don’t know the playbook on the same side of the line to start. However, I believe that Hartwig sucks enough that Pouncey will probably be the starter at C around mid season.
Sanders will leap frog ARE or atleast be splitting time with him come mid season.
Worilds offers us competent depth at OLB. And a good pass rush is essential to a good 3-4. He is the heir to Harrison’s spot possibly. Also, gives us some sort of insurance if things go bad with Wood’s extension, which I don’t think they will.
Dwyer is TBD. He is supposed to be “showcased” on Saturday so the coaches can get a good hard look at him because he has missed a lot of camp with an injury.
I’m not high on Cromarti-Smith, he got cut, and then just got resigned this week after an injury. Just a “warm body”.
