Lions Notes: Kevin Smith's Spot On The Roster In Jeopardy?

  • Jim Schwartz said this when asked about Kevin Smith's status as a Lion going forward:
"I don't know," coach Jim Schwartz said Tuesday. "I'll cross that bridge when we get there. I don't know that there's very many people that have 100% earned a spot."
I personally don't believe the Lions will release Smith, but it's certainly possible.
  • Matthew Stafford said he is going to play on Thursday against the Bills, but it's not known for how long.
  • An unnamed NFL scout thinks the Lions will go 9-7 and open the season with a win against the Bears.
  • Amari Spievey will practice at both safety and cornerback, although Jim Schwartz says safety is his main job.
  • Eric Fowler, who was let go earlier in the week, is not eligible for the practice squad.
  • The Lions' annual kickoff luncheon at Ford Field today is a sellout, meaning more than 1,000 people are expected to attend.
  • Randy Phillips was named in a report about a Miami booster who is apparently planning to write a tell-all book on the violations the football program has made over the years. Phillips denied knowing anything about it and said he's focused on the Lions.
  • Jason Hunter is doing very well as a linebacker in Denver's 3-4 defense and is apparently going to see more playing time in the future.

One FanPost is already in.

I think I will save my energy for something more worthwhile……..like comparing the tackling ability of Haushka v. Hanson and why that is the most important skill a kicker should have.

LMAO

Well you know that is important. We need a kicker that can tackle.

Smitty needs to get it going this week.

Detroit needs to really show case Stanton this week as well, to bad Spievey switched from cb to s he may have had a better chance of bumping Bly or King for a nickle than taking the job from Phillips.

Sean

if you listen to the entire Schwartz presser it doesn’t really sound like Kevin is going anywhere. you kind of took that quote a bit out of context.

Schwartz was completely evasive when addressing questions about roster moves. this just falls in line with what he was saying. they (Gash, Schwartz, Linehan) all think highly of Smith and realize that it takes some time to get over the psychological aspects of the injury. Gash said something to this effect too.

Serious Question

IF, and a strong emphasis on the word ‘if,’ the Lions get to the point where they decide Smith is of no value to the team, why cut him? Wouldn’t they want to keep him for a trade? Seems to me there’d be a lot of teams in the market for a quality RB, and we could maybe steal a draft pick or DB out of it.

by giggy09 on Sep 1, 2010 11:42 AM EDT reply actions

Exactly.

He’s good enough to get some value out of at least.

Concerning the unnamed scout...

….I don’t think we’re any better than 6-10 with our secondary/LBs and the tough schedule. Our offense will have to outscore, which they are capable of doing. But I just don’t see it. I REALLY hope I am dead ass wrong though.

USE THE SCHWARTZ!!!

by Twon82 on Sep 1, 2010 11:46 AM EDT reply actions

If the offense hits on all cylinders we'll basically have the same strengths as the Texans

Great offensive passing attack with a decent enough running game, a good DLine and very questionable secondary guys. They went 9-7 last year with that formula, so who knows what could happen.

by WestsideLionsFan on Sep 1, 2010 1:22 PM EDT up reply actions

I've been thinking this same thing.

As I’ve been reading the posts here I was thinking how similar they sound to the ones over at BRB….bitchin’ about the secondary, wondering when the heck the FO is going to go get a true safety, wondering which kicker to keep, complaining about how patchwork the O-line is….the similarities are really scary.

I keep having to look at the tab to remind myself of which site I am on.

I would be inclined to go so far as saying they are at least on the same level. Either way this season will be fun to watch.

he is still young and i would like to see him progress but remember he couldnt hardly break a 20 yarder when he was healthy. do you guys know of anyone who has came off of that serious of a knee injury better than they were in the first place…….if there are some examples im willing to say lets keep him for a while and see how he works out…… but also we were fairly deep at lb last year and we got rid of foote and sims….. two of the better players on the team

ain’t worth nothing. A shift in the NFL is happening. Old rbs are dying, A heavy influx of new rbs like Best, Matthews, Spiller, Hardesty, Chris Ivory…and add to that next year Mark Ingram, Noel Devine…K smith doesn’t have a chance.

Smith is an old RB?

I guess I don’t understand this. If he was 30, I’d say yeah… his chances are slim, but the kid is like 25. So everyone that is not a rookie or college senior is old and there is a movement in the NFL to only play rookie running backs? Kinda weird….

by DrewsLions on Sep 1, 2010 3:43 PM EDT up reply actions

I think he meant 'old style'

Which I still totally disagree with. How is Best any different than most running backs in the league? He’s smaller and quicker, sure, but there are plenty of those. Matthews is a bruiser type (like Smith), and Spiller is about as average as they come.

If anything, the situation for backs in the NFL has shifted to one of a back/reciever… you have to be able to do everything… Which is what Kevin Smith does. H-Backs are phasing out tight ends AND fullbacks – see: Dallas Clark/Tony Scheffler/Owen Daniels, etc.

Everything is migrating towards more of an everyman in skill positions, and Smith fits that bill, as does Best. This is going to be a solid tandem of RBs.

by Nate D. on Sep 1, 2010 3:55 PM EDT up reply actions

Maybe...

but Best and Mathews are not the same style, though. Not IMO anyway.

Don't bother trying to figure out what TOV says.

He is just moving on to the newest names. I guess Chris Johnson is old too.

Drew, Kevin Smith is 23. He was born in December 1986. Chris Johnson was born September of 1985., making him almost 25.

earlier reference

I posted about the RB shift a while back. The old RBs, LT, Westbrook, Portis, Thomas Jones, Fred Taylor… are being phased out. And with those guys being phased out, still being decent players…and the new blood coming in…the Kevin Smiths of the world don’t have a chance. KevinSmith isn’t old…he just sucks.

He "just sucks"... thanks for the insight.

Smith most definitely does not “suck”. And I’ll not rehash all the reasons why he’s valuable to the Lions. If he gets traded, it will be because of the injury and the depth we have… not ability. For a third round pick, he has delivered exactly what he should have in terms of value.

I’ll just say that I don’t personally think it makes any kind of sense to cut him right now. So on a topic NOT Kevin Smith....

I’m kinda jazzed that we get to see the first team offense again on Thursday, but my worst nightmare goes something like this…. (read in an announcer’s voice… preferably not Matt Shepherd for sanity’s sake)…

“Stafford drops back”
“Good coverage by the defense”
“Pocket is collapsing”
“Oooooh Maaaaaan…. did he take a shot to the knee!!”
“He is not getting up….”
“Trainers are already on the field and Stafford is holding his knee”
“The look of excruciating pain on his face says it all”
“Let’s take another look at the play….”
“Wow… his knee just buckles”
“Folks, if I was a betting man, Stafford’s season is over”
“You just don’t come back from that in less than 12 months…..”

Drew startles awake, drenched in sweat… breaths are short and panicked….

by DrewsLions on Sep 1, 2010 3:50 PM EDT reply actions

No, that dream would go like this....

"Stafford drops back"
"Good coverage by the defense"
"Pocket is collapsing"
“Stafford steps up in the pocket and avoids the rush!”
“He’s got Calvin down the sidelines!!”
“Calvin’s got his man beat!”
“TOUCHDOWN!”
“For the fifth time today, Johnson and Stafford hook up!”
“With only one minute left on the clock, I’d say the NFC Championship is in the books!”
“The Vikings just didn’t have the firepower the Lions did today”
“The Roar is Restored!!!!!”

Drew slowly wakes up with a big smile on his face… tries to get himself to fall back to sleep to enjoy the rest of the dream, but notices the sheets need to be changed….

by Libran on Sep 1, 2010 10:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Ok check this out, Regarding Kevin Smith, all of the hate came after the Cleveland game and I just watched it off DVR again

First off lest start with this. The 3rd game of the preseason is a dress rehearsal for the opener. Most teams have their 40 man rosters set and some even pretty much know what their 45 is. The final 8-15 spots usually depend on team strengths, player versatility, player potential and growth, and probably more importantly special teams. Also many GM’s have an agreement with their coaches to not be attached to the bottom 2 or 3 players on the roster in case someone better becomes available on the waiver wire. Every team has a kicker, punter, and long snapper pretty much set into that.

Now lets take a look at the 3rd game. Smith fumbled, so what, it wasn’t a problem in the past, and it wont be in the future. It was not an issue with Schwartz either. People know the guy has more in his head right now because of the injury, that will remedy itself real soon. Yes it sucked because it was a big momentum changer but better it happen there in the preseason than later when it counts. Gives him the opportunity to correct it.

My next point. Who was the running back put in when best came out to run with the first team? Smith, yes he is 2nd on our depth chart. The coaches know he can handle the load if needed. He is not very explosive but he can get the job done. The offense with Smith in there was plugging along, chewing clock, moving the ball. He actually is really good as a clock possession runner.

When he messed up Morris immediately went in. He didn’t impress me. That tells me that he was probably the 3rd on depth or at least getting looks with the 1st string offense to see how he did. Honestly Smith was far better. If you don’t believe me go back and watch the game.

When the 2nd string came in, along with Shuan Hill came in our 2nd string offensive line (Hilliard, Gandy, Gerberry, Ramirez, Jansen), Aaron Brown came in along with Jerome Felton. The 2nd string looked good, they outplayed Cleveland and won us the game. Aaron Brown looked solid as a kick returner, running back, and slot receiver. Jim Schwartz said it is his best game he has seen from him yet. After the game there is a buzz about Brown. He is in NFL.com photos, on NFL Network mentioned by Jamie Dukes and Marshal Faulk as looking good (Morris or Dorsey not mentioned at all BTW), and even the main guy talked about in a running back story on detroitlions.com. BTW Dorsey barely even seen time at all even very late in the game.

Basically going into that game, just my take on it, is that the depth chart was Best, Smith, Morris, Brown, Dorsey. Brown jumped ahead of Morris for several reasons. Not only is he a good 3rd down back and change of pace type, he also returns kicks and can play slot if the injury bug hits the receivers. On top of that he makes less than Morris and has a lot more upside. Count on it, Morris and Dorsey will be the cuts. Smith will be given the chance to work his confidence back up, however it looks like Brown is going to be breathing down his ass the whole time competing for snaps. IMO the Lions will use both Brown and Felton as different styles of change of pace backs. It also gives them good depth since Felton can take snaps at half back if needed and they can slide a tight end to fullback.

More analysis on the Smith fumble. It hurt yes but not as much as what others are failing to criticize so heavily. The ONLY time in that game we got our asses handed to is us when we did it to ourselves. Basically most of the 2nd quarter. We took 6 penalties in the 2nd quarter, and none the rest of the game. 5 of those 6 were on the defensive line. 2nd and 13 and Avril jumps off sides, 3rd and 8 and Suh bottle caps Delhome for a personal foul, 2nd and 7 KVB roughing the passer blow to the head, 3rd and 8 KVB off side. The bigger issue than Kevin Smith is the fact that our defensive line is going to cost us games if they don’t pull their heads out of their ass. KVB being the number one guy to do it, he is the veteran, he is the leader. He needs to cage that beast just a little bit and unleash it on the SNAP OF THE BALL and STOP ON WHISTLE!

The Nate Burleson push off was the other penalty which was the least detrimental to us. We made it up easily and didn’t lose any drive momentum due to it. Though I am not saying it is all right to take a penalty I can live with that more than the others. The timing on some of those defensive line penalties absolutely sucked, we had them in 3rd and long or just stopped em for a moderate gain on 1st down.

Also Cherilus had a holding penalty that negated a big catch on a broken play by Nate Burleson. Couple that with the fact that the Browns right tackle was not called for holding Avril at the .53 second mark play on their final scoring drive and you can see that there are bigger fish to fry than Kevin Smith right now. Why the Lions defensive line can get 5 penalties in one quarter and the Browns can get away with holding on what would have been a game changing sac is beyond me. Joe Thomas also got away with a blatant hold on KVB at 5:23 of the 3rd quarter.

Not necessarily Kevin Smith related but I have not seen this pointed out anywhere yet so thought I would mention it. Our defensive line also got a lot more pressure than people might think. Take away the holds and we have a couple sacks on a top 5 pass protect line. Furthermore I counted 10 QB hurries before the 2nd half was even over. I counted a hurry as someone being within a second or a step of a sac thus effecting the throw. We also flushed the pocket many times. So their is some sunshine to the line battle.

Also of note is that Donte Wesley and Caleb Campbell are absolute beasts on kick cover. Those two pretty much shut down Cribbs and I fully expect them to make the team on those merits alone.

Oh one more thing, our safety play!

Phillips is looking good :) I know a lot of guys are down on Spievey but in time he will come along. Think about this though, our safeties are making tackles 20 yards down field. You know at first that might seem like a negative, but is that not what a safety is for? To be the last line of defense to stop a touchdown? You know in years prior those plays were touchdowns right? It is improving guys, slowly but surely :)

Thanks

For the insights .. I had missed some of the finer points that you pointed out …

Philips was everywhere … that i remember .. he was great .. and king sucked big time … and someone also pointed out that we were 5 for 5 in the red zone … no FG’s .. All TD’s .. that’s a hell of a game changer …

i forget who...

but when Lee Campbell got cut there were a few people who were butt hurt cause they thought it was Caleb… bunch of buffoons in here pretending like their lion fans.
Anyways on to Kevin Smith, I argued on here the night of the Cleveland game and the two guys i argued with, I havent seen them post on this thread yet but anyhow, they were completely against the idea that Brown was running tougher than Smith and there is no way that A. Brown was more valuable to us right now as K Smith. Look Smith has always had the best attitude and one of the best work ethics (next to Calvin Johnson) he suffered a very unfortunate injury and I think he is feeling the pressure of Best. Sure the game wasnt important but he killed a huge head of steam with that fumble. He has never had a problem with fumbling, he has however had a problem with breaking tackles and out running people. I remember last year that when Smith went down the next game (i think) Morris rips a 50 some yard TD run. Thats with the exact same offensive line that smith was using before his injury and do you know the longest Smith run before that was…. Yeppers 32 and he had daylight but was chased down.
Best is obviously number 1 but after that its a toss up. Sure Smith is younger than Morris but it just looks like Morris hits the hole and runs harder than K Smooth, not to mention he can break an arm tackle. So then it brings me to Brown is running hard, fast, and can play special teams. Ya he looked like shit last year but has taken it up a notch this off season and playing well. Brown does play just like Best, except Best does everything faster and better.
So that brings up the change of pace convo that some people think that K smith is the Ying to Best’s Yang. Felton I believe can run this role just as well as K Smith, so it seems that Smith is getting replaced on so many levels that it isnt logical to hold on to him.
Now to completely screw with everyones mind, I think that its fine if we keep him cause he does have good skills and doesnt miss an assignment. But I just cant understand how some people cant fathom that the lions arent sure what to do with Kevin Smith… Like its a no brainer for him to be on the team because he talks the talk but yet hasnt really walked the walk

I will be really surprised if they keep both Smith and Morris. I expect Smith to win out but you never know, you just never do.

To me anyways Best is our obvious feature back until he proves he cant handle it. And Felton is our FB and a nice option to put in for tailback for a change of pace guy. But Felton is a straight line runner and he is way slower than Smith. I would be amazed if he gave us anything over Kevin other than size. He might wear a defense down more than Smith but IMO he is not going to outrun anyone either. And believe it or not pass protect is Feltons weakness, Smith is actually probably better there. So though I am in Feltons corner I don’t really see him doing anything that replaces Smith.

Brown is a bit different than Best in that it takes Aaron time to “wind up”. Over a distance of 40 yards he is not much slower than Best, over a distance of 5 yards he is a snail compared to best. It is like comparing Barry to Mel Gray. Mel was a straight line speed guy that had to do small cuts and shifts to keep his speed up where Barry was the stop and go jitterbug. Best has the same stop and go that Barry had, the same vision, he just don’t have the lateral and backwards movement though. He is faster than Barry was IMO though so both special but slightly different. Anyways the point was that Aaron is a change of pace from best, because his speed is very different.

Funny that you say a dead horse...

didnt they used to shoot horses who broke their legs… maybe that would settle the RB debate. On a more serious note i think we will be fine with whoever they pick for the depth chart it was just amazing how some people couldnt see that there is a possibility that our Lions might move on without him.

Thats probably true gyorick

To me its shocking how fast people are willing to cut him. There wasn’t even a discussion until he fumbled a ball in a pre-season game. It all started when one “member” blew his top. Then it seemed inevitable. Fact is I like Kevin he’s a great team mate. A hard worker is he a standout back no. I like everything he does and puts into his job. He plays for the lions not matter what happens I will PULL for K smooth. Because he’s a player on mine team. Just like I will pull for Derrick Williams and yes Paul Pratt. They are on the roster of my team and while I don’t like what Rameriez and eric king do. I still pull that they will improve and will be great players. Love or hate Kev IMO he is on your team he has done nothing to earn a fan base turning against him.

I had a dream were the Lions let me sign a 1 day contract they let me practice with them running drills and catching passes from Matt…At the end of the day I was called into Mayhews office. I was told I had just been traded to seattle for a 5th round draft pick.
