Lions fumbled on this missed oppurtunity to pick up a starting Coner Back

Lions Trade Tyler Polumbus To Seahawks for a draft pick and then the Seattle Seahawks trade starting cornerback Josh Wilson to Ravens for a fifth-round conditional 2011 draft pick.
Couln’t the Lions make up some kind of package with Tyler Polumbus to get cornerback Josh Wilson from Seattle .

Think Lions fumbled on this miised oppurtunity to pick up a starting Coner Back.
Wilson would have helped fill the big hole we have back there,

Not many chances like this come around.

2 days late

and complaining about something we can’t fix….good times

I had a dream were the Lions let me sign a 1 day contract they let me practice with them running drills and catching passes from Matt…At the end of the day I was called into Mayhews office. I was told I had just been traded to seattle for a 5th round draft pick.

by The Profiler on Sep 2, 2010 1:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Well first of all he is a Nickle Back

and IMO not worth giving up a 4th-5th round pick for when Dre Bly will out play him anyways.

The Lions regime knows something we don't

Could be they are satisfied with their CB’s in this scheme could be King was given so much playing time to see if they wanted to keep him given the depth and were playing a CB shell game keeping their plans hidden off of the game film.

I listened to an interview where Schwartz said he was happy with the back 7 and is content to wait and see

He said that a lot of it for them is communication and how they play as a unit and that injuries have not allowed them to gel in that way yet.

Tell me He couldn't Help are Backfield

Here’s the skinny: Josh Wilson is a 25-year old corner and former second-round pick that has amassed in three seasons, and mostly on very poor pass defenses, more value than an average fifth-round pick amasses in their entire career. He is a ball hawk and an impresario of the pick six. In two seasons starting, he has six interceptions and three returned for touchdowns. Wilson has averaged 43.5 yards per interception.

2010 is his contract year. Wilson is due $550,000 on the back end of a four-year deal.

He is an excellent nickelback, a sound and sometimes punishing open field tackler (Wilson forced three fumbles in 2008) that has shown improving cover skills. His tools, minus his height, are off the charts. He ran a legitimate 4.39 forty at the 2007 NFL Combine. That showing bests all defensive backs in the 2010 class. Every single one of them. 58 of the very best talents in college football, including Eric Berry, Earl Thomas and Taylor Mays, and not one ran a faster forty than Wilson. He also flashed a 36.5 inch vertical, popped 20 reps on the bench and scored a 29 on the Wonderlic.

Thats great, O. J. Atogwe is a pretty good player too but he is not here either

First of all you have no idea what is going on with this guy. If he is so good why did a rookie in Seattle beat him out? Secondly how do you know he would even come here and play for us? You do know the last corner we wanted from Seattle said F U to the D right? And lastly he is on the last year of his contract, there is no way he will be making that low of money if all the hype is true. Sometimes a football team has to make business decisions.

Secondly people need to give the moves already made a chance. LOL Not even one game played and the 3 corners we went out and got this year are already crap? We just brought in Houston, Wade, and Bly and no one has even seen them play as a unit. Yet we are idiots for passing up on a guy? C’mon man sometimes you need to pause and evaluate, turning over the roster just for the sake of turning over the roster is not going to get us anywhere.

+1 Evil

First off Houston has played very good in my opinion, teams are not exactly throwing to his side of the field all that much. Bly is Bly you know what you have in him. And for the sake of the conversation before camp was over and before he got hurt all the rave was on how Wade was doing so good, from what I took out of Sean’s reports Wade was the best of all the CB’s on the roster and now we have been playing without him. I may be wrong because I am only getting reports a couple of times a week right now so I could have missed something.

How many lumps you want Doc?

According to Seattle fans on the SB Site it was because of his size.

Wilson is 5’9", and apparently the new Seattle regime wants bigger corners. He is a playmaker with very good ball skills though. There was also a lot of dispute over whether Kelly Jennings or Thurmond have shown enough to take Wilson’s spot.

On the other hand, Seattle’s pass defence has been ranked 32nd in 2008 and 30th in 2009, so they have to change something there. Those rankings were based on yards given up per game. QB ratings against them were 96 and 93.4 the last two years. Pretty crappy.

Overall, I am okay with us staying with what we have and giving Wade a chance to play. That would be the guy who would lose his starting spot if we picked up Wilson. I don’t see Bly as being close to Wilson in ability right now. Wilson would be good depth for us.

by NorthLeft12 on Sep 2, 2010 2:23 PM EDT up reply actions

Yea...doesn't show how he helps

No doubt hes got skills and he would help in the short-term, but a 5th round pick for a guy thats only going to be here for a year isn’t exactly building a team. Ravens picked him up because they are a few pieces away from the superbowl…we’re miles away. We need players that will stick around for at least three years, so that we don’t have to worry about rebuilding at that positions, while getting players for the multitude of other positions

The beginning of the end of the misery

maybe Mayhew tried but couldn’t come to an agreement. It’s one of those things we all can speculate about and never know the details

I wouldn’t trade either.
All was stating could have helped our backfield.and for 1yr see if anygood then try resign.
Ravens must think something good about him to be starting in week one.

Now if you could just work on your capitalization, punctuation and grammar. LOL

Harley, I agree with one part of your response, there has been a lot of bitching about the secondary but very little proposed actions.

I am sure Mayhew is scanning this site now and looking for ideas………especially ones that are two days too late.

I still think we are better off than a lot of you are giving credit for.

Like I said, Houston has been playing above average, Bly is Bly, and during the OTA’s Wade was the best of the bunch, the 1 weak spot is going to be at S next to Delmas and between Speivie and the rest 1 will stick out more than the rest. Think about this for all you nay sayers. How many missed tackles have you seen by our starting unit? This team in general has been making all the tackles and not whiffing like during the Merinera sauce era, these guys want to hit and make people pay for getting the ball unlike the past 10 years. There is attitude on both sides of the ball something that has been missing for a long time in Motown!

How many lumps you want Doc?

by davis0169 on Sep 2, 2010 2:39 PM EDT reply actions

Agreed

We have not seen Houston, Wade, and Delmas play together. Add in one of the young S stepping up and the secondary I don’t think is that bad. I think LB depth and possibly Follet’s coverage and Levy’s injuries are a far bigger concern. CB depth beyond Bly is pretty bad also though.

by Adam Keith on Sep 2, 2010 2:55 PM EDT up reply actions

Don't start that discussion again. LOL

Very good j16941! That would have made a bunch of PODers very happy.

Although at some point this season I might wish we did have the Grade A Berry and Wilson back there. We will see.

I don't know

this Ndamukong Suh guys looks kind of good.

by motown313 on Sep 2, 2010 10:08 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes, don't get me wrong. Suh was the best player available at # 2.

And Best will make us all very happy too, so I think Mayhew stuck to his plan and did what he thought best for the team.

My pessimistic side sees our secondary getting shredded and then you feel that little pang of …..buyers remorse….just for a second.

I hope to see our first string secondary together for the first real game, then make a judgement. Delmas/Phillips/Houston/Wade or Bly

by NorthLeft12 on Sep 3, 2010 9:55 AM EDT up reply actions

You canot think like that

Even assuming those 2 pan out the way we expect Best and Suh to pan out … You have to take away Suh from our D-line and Best from our offense .. and then add those 2 ..

What do you get .. A D line that is worse overall D is worse .. Suh is always double teamed .. even triple ..

Best makes the whole offense better .. way better .. not his yards .. but the threat of him .. defenses have to be honest …

We will suck in the back field of course, and we will yearn for playmakers at LB and DB .. BUT by doing what the lions did .. the team is better for now .. and for next year ..

We got the Best of this year’s lot .. and we will get good CB’s soon too .. wait and watch ..

by Libran on Sep 3, 2010 11:44 AM EDT up reply actions

No

Wilson sucks, just because you start on one team doesn’t make you good. Glad they didn’t make this move.

Wha-wha-what?!

How is a guy who ran a 4.39 40 at the combine, is physical, and has six picks in two years with three of them going back for TD’s a bad player? PLEASE tell me, I would absolutely love to hear what your reasoning is, if you actually have any.

by motown313 on Sep 2, 2010 10:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Ndamukong Suh - Bringing 60's football back to Motown!

by Evilsmurf on Sep 3, 2010 1:45 AM EDT up reply actions

Of corse .. we dropped the ball

Seattle doesn’t have a way to contact the lions management .. and with the world knowing that we have 4 Pro Bowlers in our Secondary, they never thought of contacting the lions before the trade …

Seattle trades on a 1st come 1st served basis … Baltimore got there 1st … so they traded with them .. Why would they even try to look and see if they could have gotten more from any other team … Why bother contacting anyone else

And don’t even get me started on mayhew … If only he had done some nice trades like millen did, i would be sooo satisfied … He sucks .. Of course he dropped the ball … he has no idea what’s going on around the nfl .. who is available, what fits us .. etc .. he is probably online everyday looking for porn :)

While I don't like getting bashed ..

It’s really impossible not to respond to this ..

Second guessing Millen was a given … And I am sure Mayhew etc will make mistakes too .. But after seeing these guys do such a great job Most often than not .. maybe 90% of time .. Saying the “fumbled” " etc .. is too much …

Mahyhew and Co. deserve some respect after the way they have drafted, traded and acquired people in this short a span of time … from a barren roster to this .. no mean feat ..

Just a thought

With countless Seahawks already on the roster, did anyone think that someone went to those players and did a little a research into Wilson’s work ethic and personality and they found out things they didn’t like, and just decided to pass on him?

by delusional on Sep 3, 2010 12:17 PM EDT reply actions

Yep

That or anything else .. Bottom line, I am sure Lions considered it .. but decided against it for whatever reason … Right or wrong ..

With the past 2 years of history .. I trust the FO … Might get it wrong at times … All we can ask for is to get it right more times than not …
