Lions Overcome Early Sloppiness To Beat Bills, 28-23

Tonight's game against the Bills got off to a shaky start for the Lions. Matthew Stafford threw an interception that was returned for a touchdown within the first minute of the game, and the offense and defense continued to struggle for most of the rest of the first half.

Once the backups came in and got settled, the Lions started to play much better and ended up winning by a score of 28-23. Both the offense and the defense looked good, which is a good sign for many of the bubble players that saw a lot of action tonight.

Since I have yet to see the entire game (hooray, tape delay), after the jump is a breakdown of the scoring rather than a recap of what I saw.

Star-divide

First Quarter

Buffalo TD (14:25): 40-yard interception return by Drayton Florence

Buffalo FG (1:48): 47-yard field goal by Rian Lindell

Second Quarter

Buffalo FG (12:23): 50-yard field goal by Rian Lindell

Buffalo FG (5:40): 41-yard field goal by Rian Lindell

Detroit TD (0:14): Jerome Felton 1-yard run

Third Quarter

Detroit TD (3:55): 25-yard pass from Drew Stanton to DeDe Dorsey

Fourth Quarter

Detroit TD (11:03): 16-yard pass from Drew Stanton to Derrick Williams

Detroit TD (6:44): 102-yard interception return by Paul Pratt

Buffalo TD (0:19): 1-yard run by Chad Simpson

With this win, the Lions' preseason record ended up being 3-1 for the second consecutive year. In the last three preseasons, the Lions have a combined record of 10-2. If only that would translate to the regular season for a change.

Did U attend Detroit Public Schools?

I went 2 to livonia PS, so I know ur plight, but somehow I learned how 2 spell. Guess, I gotta watch the tape delay, the stream I was watching turned to some colleg game, must’ve been a Lions fan, who got sick of watching their ineptitude, Looks like he gave up too early. How ‘bout Stanton, havin’ a killer perseason, almost better than Hill.

Why does everyone insist on ..

comparing play against 3rd stringers to another player who is playing against higher caliber competition?

by MatthewDC on Sep 2, 2010 10:38 PM EDT up reply actions

I didn't get to watch the game, but I was checking updates on my phone..

I know for sure dorsey didn’t go in until it was third stringers.. and most of browns carries that I saw were after smith came out I thought..

smith started but there startes where only in for a drive or 2..

smith stayed in some then brown cam in agenst there num 2.. ded had mostly 3rd and or cuts.. dosnt take away the fact he mady them look like high schoolers

From the stat line..

Aaron brown had 5 carries for 19 yards and 1 catch for 6 yards.. I don’t see how that constitutes a good game..

Again, I didn’t see it, but that sounds very unimpressive to me..

Maybe his kick returns were good though.. seemed like he was doing decent on that front

by MatthewDC on Sep 2, 2010 10:44 PM EDT up reply actions

And his long was 14 yards...

so that means most of his yards were 1 play

by MatthewDC on Sep 2, 2010 10:45 PM EDT up reply actions

I see your point.

He did look pretty good on a couple of runs. I’m pretty sure he had a couple of good blocks too.

by coolbreeze42 on Sep 2, 2010 10:46 PM EDT up reply actions

I am POSITIVE that K. Smooth is a better blocker..

At least from everything we have seen in Aaron Brown in the past..

For those that watched the game.. why did Stafford and Hill have such bad performances?

by MatthewDC on Sep 2, 2010 10:49 PM EDT up reply actions

Stafford threw a pick after a misread.

A linebacker was sitting on the route. If he would of noticed that the LB wasn’t going backwards meaning he could jump the route.

I Don't think the play calling..

has afforded him much of an opportunity…

Wades club hand prevented him from being effective.

I don’t know how far he is away from gettting that cast removed if its at least two weeks away I say we put him on the pup and let him fully recover the first 6 weeks. He seemed to favor that side and he couldn’t wap up when he needed to ,that cost us yardage. He did have his reciever blanketed most of the time but on slant routes I think he will be easy picken’s for a competent QB. He could be a spark to the defense after the bye week but as long as he has that cast on he is a liability. I really liked his enthusiastic play.

by Wayne Fontes on Sep 2, 2010 10:25 PM EDT reply actions

I find it absurd that Stanton is in the conversation of being cut...

let alone “solidified” his spot as the 3rd string QB…

I just shake my head that a QB like Hill is under performing and everyone feels he’s the better QB. I honest wouldn’t mind seeing Hill cut and few other guys cut after today’s game and honestly, after today’s game I think the decisions to cut guys should be a lot easier on Schwartz.

That's an absolute joke.

Stanton is terrible. Every chance he has gotten to do anything in a real game he has looked completely lost and played as though he were on a pee wee team.

Stanton is the pre-season king every year but it doesn’t change the fact that he is wretched in a real game.

Hill is an excellent backup who apparently had 1 bad game. Let’s not forget it was against the same team that apparently threw Stafford for a loop too.. maybe it’s a system thing..

But I wish I could just copy and paste something I wrote up last week but simply put, Stanton’s “real” chances have come off of the odds stacked against him.

I think Stanton is most likely garbage when it comes to playing against other teams’ starting caliber defenses, but he’s obviously got at least a season to study and answer the call if Stafford goes down.

He’s drawing a lot of double teams and he has to learn to cut those double teams down to one guy and break away. Instead he’s trying to take on both guys (usually a Guard and a Tackle) and he’s not getting to the QB in efficient amount of time. Like I’ve said before though, all that comes with practice and conditioning, he should look pretty good by week 4 or 5.

He did that pretty well at UN.

His problem now is probably due to the fact both players blocking him now are as good or better than one of the two trying to block him in college.

That and as I was giggling watching the tu vs Nebraska game I noticed Nebraska used him off the line as much as they used him as a down lineman. Gave him a better chance to read the play then react.

this is the same thing Sapp said...

about attacking one guy to beat the double team. in our system you attack one guy and slide through—just like Sapp said. you don’t hold them up and play the ball like he did in Nebraska. old habits die hard.

on running plays, you have to make a pile when facing a double team—at least that is what i was taught as a DL. don’t give ground. but we are in a passing league so maybe he should drop back about 3 yd and play LB on a double team. good for screens, draws…

A Good Game for the Bubble Guys

Pratt’s INT was a gimme, but then he had to haul chili the whole way. Cohen 2 sacks, Dorsey & Williams a TD each. (Felton’s not a bubble guy IMO.) So do we just cut the late camp-body signings and practice-squad the lower echelon rookies? Pay Northcutt a mil-and-a-half just to return punts? Nice to see a preseason end with more questions than groans. But we’ll face Spiller in Wk 10, though.

There may have not been anybody there, but you have to give Pratt credit. He was running to the right and dove back to his left to make that INT. Then he had the wherewithal to get up and start running back even though he was in the end zone. Crap…I’ve turned into Wayne Fontes haha

For people hating on Smith you must not have watched the same game as me

Look there is one person on this team that can compete with smith for the number 2 spot at RB and his name is not Brown or Dorsey. With the type of offense we run the only real competition to Smith is Morris IMO. He is the only other back that is a complete back. I think Kevin wins out easily in that one, he is younger and still recovering mentally from that injury. Not to mention that it would be a shit move for the front office to cut a guy that works so hard, has put in so much effort, has so much heart, and just as talented as anyone not named Best. This might be a “business” and all, but sometimes you know in your heart what the right thing to do is, and Kevin deserves the chance to fully recover from his injury. He has earned at least that much since he sacrificed his body for the team in the first place. If he was unable to perform I could understand a cut, but he is able to perform, at a decent level too.

Dont get me wrong I love me some Felton and Brown but they fill different roles on this roster and that is full back and change of pace / 3rd down back. Morris may make the team with one of the lower roster spots anyways but Dorsey has to go. As much as I like DeDe he brings nothing to the table that is unique or even solid for that matter. Yes he has all right speed and can make some decent plays but so does Best, Brown, and even Smith. All DeDe brings is broken hopes and dreams from the flashes he gives you before he fumbles.

I noticed something with Kevin tonight. Menatlly his confidence is not there. I dont know if it is bad habit from last year or what but I did see one where he could have bounced and took the outside edge, and I think he would have outrun the guy. Instead he cut it up field and took the sure 3-4 yards. I think that kind of defines Kevin in some ways but I can tell you that he is not only our best pass protect back, even better than Felton, but he is an ideal back to chew clock and eat time of possession. Don’t get me wrong I am still all right with trading him, but that is a different issue entirely than cutting him and getting nothing in return.

Smith may not ever recover to be his former self but he deserves to be given that chance

he sacrificed his body for the good of this team and is doing everything asked of him to recover. He is young enough, and valuable enough to the team to invest the time into him. DeDe will never be a clock possession runner, nor will he ever be able to run pass protect. DeDe has been in the league long enough to know how to secure a ball and how to pass block, if he has not learned it by now he never will. DeDe’s potential is tapped out, and it falls short of every other back on the team. He is a 1 and a half trick poney. He can jitterbug for some nice gains, and he can run a handful of simple routes. DeDe should be the first one cut IMO but if the coaches keep him I will be rooting for him 100%. Wish I could say the same for all the Smith haters. I am not in love with Smith but I realize he can be a workhorse back if Best goes down and he can do everything well. No he is not going to get many big gains, but he is not going to lose the game for you either. Pretty similar to Hill, our backup QB. Smith is a game manager type of back and he will not hurt you for being in there.

DeDe may show more explosion, but he also has a lot more holes in his game, not to mention that I do not believe he could hold up to being a feature back if Best was hurt. Both Smith and Morris can do that. Brown is proving he may be able to do that but he is still a bit unproven there where Smith and Morris are.

It is 3rd and 20, under a minute on the clock, and we are down by 4. Who do you want to be in the game as a back that has to either pass protect on a blitz pickup, or motion out into the slot for a 20 yard pattern? In my book Smith is the guy I trust there, when the game and possibly Staffords health is on the line. Morris I could see even, but given that he is older and more expensive I think he loses that tie. And there is NO WAY I want Dorsey in there in that situation. How about a two back set where one back will motion out for a pattern, that back being Best and the other stay in to pass protect? Can you honestly say you would rather have Dorsey in there on Staffords blind side than Smith? I cannot.

I’m shocked Smurf said that.

Deserves to be given a chance? I can’t believe that one. The only thing Smith should be given is another chance to play in the NFL somewhere.

Ita all gonna be known in like 2 days anyways and pretty much peope have fallen where they are, there is no new light to shed on anything

People behind Smith are set on him
People against Smith are set against him
Perrsonally I am set on the team, whatever way they go I will trust, I can see valid points on both sides of it and obviously I have my own personal take on the matter

very true smurf.

Some people see some flash in the pre-season. And that is good enough for them. And some people see pre-season for what it is. But in the end. The coaching will make the decision for us. And however it goes. It will be fine with me. I cheer for the Detroit Lions. Not any one player.

See, that's a true statement...

I cheer for the Detroit Lions, but I also want the team to keep players that will grow with the team. Players with upside hitting their peak when the team is a playoff contender. It’s not just about this year.

Landon Cohen

I think he just solidified his spot on the team with his performance last night.

And if Fluellen is cut because Cohen is kept.....

Then you know who will pick him up in a heartbeat?

Mr. Pad level in Chi town.

I agree Cohen should be kept.

Flu!

I really like both Fluellen and Cohen. I like that Flu can play anywhere on the DLine, and it seems that Cohen is finally developing into a solid player, using that 50 rep strength to full advantage. Although they both might be better fit as a 3-4 end rather than a 4-3 tackle.
