NFL Roster Cuts: Lions Release Ko Simpson
With Amari Spievey moving to safety, Ko Simpson is officially the odd man out, according to Adam Schefter.
Simpson joined the Lions via a trade late in the 2009 preseason and was banged up quite a bit during his year in Detroit. He spent the first part of training camp on the PUP list this year and just never seemed to be able to get healthy. With Louis Delmas and C.C. Brown entrenched as the starters at safety, Randy Phillips emerging this preseason and Spievey making the move from cornerback, Simpson became expendable.
The Lions are now down to 70 players on their roster, meaning 17 more moves are necessary before 6 p.m.

I can see why they did this
When he’s healthy Simpson isn’t that bad of a safety. However, IMO Phillips outplayed him this preseason and even Spievey showed a lot of promise. I’m still kind of on the fence about CC Brown. I mean, if they don’t put him in coverage he could be good. He seems to have a Roy Williams skill set. He can play the run and tackle pretty well but he lacks in coverage….hope they can get him coached up or put him in situations where his strengths come into play more often then his weaknesses.
sorry BB
after I re read your post I realized you were talking about CC Brown and not Simpson. So I actually agree with you.
Confused
You had my confused for a bit there. I think Ko will be the first of the players cut so far (including DeDe) that gets picked up. He’s young enough and has good coverage skills like you said. There are a lot of teams that still play the free safety strong safety sets that need one with good coverage skills. Schwartz is leaning towards wanting two hard hitting safeties that can just play deep on passing downs and hopefully take good angles to cut off any big plays. He seems to really like the head hunting safeties…which are always fun to watch.
Not really surprized here
Phillips stepped up. And Spievey is showing promise at S too.

Fair enough
This cut doesn’t bother me. Simpson only managed only one play here at that was the pick against Washington. Didn’t do much else.
