NFL Roster Cuts: Lions Release Brian Clark, Keep Dennis Northcutt

Dave Birkett is reporting that the Lions have released wide receiver Brian Clark. Also, they have apparently decided to keep Dennis Northcutt.

What this means for someone like Derrick Williams is unclear right now. Many (myself included), believe that the Lions will only keep four receivers in order to open up a roster spot at another position, such as tight end. If that is the case, then Williams will be released. If Detroit keeps five wideouts, though, Williams should be on the team.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

For the love of god why wont they just CUT Northcutt! I’m hoping they’re only keeping him as trade bait to pick up another 7th round pick…or maybe a 1982 Yugo….cause that’s what he’s worth in my mind….

Gee...Williams or Gronkowski?

Tough decision……NOT!!!!!!!!!

Come on Gronk, you can do it.

check the Buffalo preseason game

did you see him make that bad read on the reverse where he cut inside despite have a lane a blocker on the outside. he could have taken it to the house. instead he ran straight into a safety.

spievey looks like horseshit too.

by x$pcents IV on Sep 4, 2010 2:30 PM EDT up reply actions

Though I am rooting for Williams I can see reasons why they might cut him

I personally hope they keep both Gronk and D. W. but if they had to pick between the two Gronk wins hands down.

I had a dream were the Lions let me sign a 1 day contract they let me practice with them running drills and catching passes from Matt…At the end of the day I was called into Mayhews office. I was told I had just been traded to seattle for a 5th round draft pick.

Who else do they have to return punts?

If DWill had shown anything doing that Northcutt would be history.

Big kid out of Maryland.

We dratfted him last year in the 7th round, and last year was totally lost. This year was a completely different player. Huge upside.

by Millen_Free on Sep 4, 2010 4:13 PM EDT up reply actions

He was from Wake Forest.

From what I’ve seen he is small like 5’9" and was never amounted to anything they had hoped. I think he was drafted very high like 2nd or 3rd round last year.

by Wayne Fontes on Sep 4, 2010 4:17 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes

And this was a strength of out team. We plan on running a bunch of 2 TE sets this year and having 4 TE’s I would think is a must. Smith is a developmental player, and does not inspire me at all.

by Millen_Free on Sep 4, 2010 4:23 PM EDT up reply actions

He's got good potential.

Also, he fills a need. Now I wonder if we have traded a RB.

by coolbreeze42 on Sep 4, 2010 4:26 PM EDT up reply actions

Just maybe..

Mayhew and company are thinking that the CB position is so bad, and thin, that we need to add some depth anyway possible. So they maybe thinking a TE becomes expendable when you consider value to the team.

by Millen_Free on Sep 4, 2010 4:27 PM EDT up reply actions

Neither guy has produced much of anything

One was regarded as a 2nd round talent last year, the other as a 7th. It’s not like Gronk has lit the world on fire and proven he was a stud. He’s done nothing of the sort.

by Trysdor on Sep 4, 2010 4:49 PM EDT up reply actions

he's going to develop into a good TE.

The brother of Rob Gronkowski who was drafted by the pats.

by coolbreeze42 on Sep 4, 2010 4:12 PM EDT reply actions

Here is the deal on Phonz

he wasa Ballhawk coming out of college.

We traded a 1st in 2010 to draft him in the 2nd round of 2009

He had a very disappionting rookie year. He lost playing time to a practice squad player.

This off season, he has looked better. He certainly has upside. He is a high character guy, but we drafted Perrish Cox who is a STUD as is rookie SydQuan Thompson.

We simply didn’t have room for him.

or a conditional pick based on Phonz playing time.

lol?

The 5th, 6th or 7th pick cannot be based on how much time Gronk plays? Boy you really made me feel stupid!

Just got back from the Denver site

the Broncos fans admit they were too hard on Alphonso Smith because of all the draft picks McD gave SEA to get him. They call Smith a real class act and wish him good luck with a fresh start in Detroit.
Cool football folks in Denver. Too bad I can’t discuss hockey with them. lol

You will not have to worry about talking hockey as I heard the team may move to Winnipeg in the next couple of years.

I thought that was Phoenix who might move to Winnipeg?

I’m pretty sure the Avs will be staying put in Denver

For the Denver guys wondering about Gronk

He is a big tight end that does everything well but nothing great, he can pass protect, run block, and catch, but he is not super speedy.

he showed improvement and progressed awareness of where to go while running a route

this year too. He can make difficult catches and he is a hard working player.

Lions fans deserve better than being the laughing stock of the NFL. Lets all hope they are heading in the right direction finally.

Dennis Northcutt

I didn’t see him do much this pre-season, or last year. Must be a good presence in the locker-room or something.
