NFL Roster Cuts: Lions Release Brian Clark, Keep Dennis Northcutt
Dave Birkett is reporting that the Lions have released wide receiver Brian Clark. Also, they have apparently decided to keep Dennis Northcutt.
What this means for someone like Derrick Williams is unclear right now. Many (myself included), believe that the Lions will only keep four receivers in order to open up a roster spot at another position, such as tight end. If that is the case, then Williams will be released. If Detroit keeps five wideouts, though, Williams should be on the team.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
For the love of god why wont they just CUT Northcutt! I’m hoping they’re only keeping him as trade bait to pick up another 7th round pick…or maybe a 1982 Yugo….cause that’s what he’s worth in my mind….
+4
check the Buffalo preseason game
did you see him make that bad read on the reverse where he cut inside despite have a lane a blocker on the outside. he could have taken it to the house. instead he ran straight into a safety.
spievey looks like horseshit too.
Though I am rooting for Williams I can see reasons why they might cut him
I personally hope they keep both Gronk and D. W. but if they had to pick between the two Gronk wins hands down.

I had a dream were the Lions let me sign a 1 day contract they let me practice with them running drills and catching passes from Matt…At the end of the day I was called into Mayhews office. I was told I had just been traded to seattle for a 5th round draft pick.
Who else do they have to return punts?
If DWill had shown anything doing that Northcutt would be history.
NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!
Why will he not just go away…did last regular season show us nothing about Northcutt?
well shitballz
Northcutt must have dirt on the Schwartz. Maybe he caught him singing along with a Britney cd or something

i am betting just Northcutt

I'm not sure how we keep Northcutt and get rid of Jansen
Didn’t see that coming.

I hear ya there
at least Jansen was quality depth

no but I think Jansen hands are just as good
if the shoe fits...get another one just like it - George Carlin
Not sure what his hands are like either.
Here is a question; Why can a guy catch punts, but not passes thrown to him?
He can't multi-task
He cant run and catch at the same time.
if the shoe fits...get another one just like it - George Carlin
because he gets to stand there and stare at the ball for 5 seconds before it finally hits him.
Lions fans deserve better than being the laughing stock of the NFL. Lets all hope they are heading in the right direction finally.
Because they play different positions ..
We have depth at Jansen plays and not even a starter for returning punts …
Schwartz tried Williams in the last game, and if had done a good job, he would be on the team instead of Northcutt

Must be a ...
financial decision. Anyone know DNs contract specifics?
I was pretty sure DN was making a lot of money for a 4th string WR
Something like 2 mil a year or maybe more

no DW is only making 395,000 this season
and 480,000 next

I guess his contract was frontloaded

If they are the same ...
You commenting on this whole thread is pointless :)
anyway Northcutt will make 1.5 mil this season
if the shoe fits...get another one just like it - George Carlin
Not abt money
Williams can’t return punts .. and Northcutt can .. Better than anyone on the current roster ..
It was a pure business decision ..
Wow
I’d hate to see him walk and chew bubblegum at the same time
NEWS FLASH! In an apparent attempt to walk and chew bubble gum at the same time, Dennis Northcutt has passed away because he then stopped breathing…film at 11
Really?
I mean Northcutt’s terrible, but who else do we have? Brian Clark is good but honestly there isn’t anyone else to keep as the 4th wideout on the roster. Give them another year and they should draft another wide out that should bump him off the roster.

I think Northcutt spent a lot of time in Mayhews office on his knee's
And that wasn’t praying or pleading for a spot he was doing. He was getting Mayhew’d
I thought being lazy was a bad thing, So I gave up thinking.
I wanna tear my hair out .. Arghhhh
We are so dysfunctional …
Jon jansen and Dennis Northcutt don’t play the same position ..
No one on our team is better that Northcutt at returning punts .. (Yes .. it sucks) If there was, he would be gone in a Jiff .. Schwartz tried Williams and many others too ..
Lions are overpaying to keep the only option we have .. and we would have eaten his salary too if we released him …
He is sadly the best we have at a position of need
Nate is better but also too valuable at receiver to get banged up on special teams
Ndamukong Suh - Bringing 60's football back to Motown!
Honestly, how can we not find a better punt returner?
Is Yamon Figurs still available? hahaha
I haven’t seen a Lions player drop so many passes since David “Hands of” Sloan.
yeah, that was a serious miss on the FO, the guy plays corner too, wtf
Lions fans deserve better than being the laughing stock of the NFL. Lets all hope they are heading in the right direction finally.
I read
I read somewhere that Northcuttt’s salary is guaranteed wether he makes the team or not. I think they may be trying to find a trade partner for him. I am not giving up on Williams yet.
I think....
this is the most angry I’ve seen the POD group since we started mocking Profiler’s grammar…..lol
:) Lolll
I don’t like Northcutt
.. But if we keep him, I do understand the reasoning behind it …
Bottomline
By keeping northcutt, we have a punt returner .. and a bad wide receiver .. but we have 3 more .. of those .. By keeping anyone else, we will have a better $th receiver but ZERO punt returners …
The lions will fix that soon … find someone who returns punts AND does something else .. but for now …
We have Nate Burleson to return punts if needed until we can Mayhew a team for a PR
I thought being lazy was a bad thing, So I gave up thinking.
Ya .. BUT
Not happening .. unless we really really need it …
nate said he wanted to .. but Schwartz didn’t say yes .. We don’t want someone like Nate, who finally makes CJ more explosive, to be returning punts ..
Northcutt isn't bothering me...I can see the point
It’s Williams still on the team, I can’t see the point.
Unless we cut one TE
Williams is a goner too .. I like him though ..
Northcutt can at least return punts ...
Williams can’t consistently make catches nor make good decisions in the return game … his a$$ needs to be gone.
Maybe Mayhew is trying to fleece someone with a trade, prior to 6:00 pm EST … some one get Jerry Jones on the phone, quickly!
Thank You.
Honestly they should both be off the team. Aaron Brown is our returner. Cut both and find another receiver. There is decent talent out there. But right now you keep Northcutt until you find someone else better…tomorrow.
Williams aint shit.

Williams can't do anything consistently well ...
… except be inconsistent.
At least Northcutt could return punts.
I re-watched all our pre-season games this morning
I triied to stay out of the D. Williams debate but upon further review by the replay official I say his ass needs to be cut. Berry can fair catch punts just fine, and not at the 4 yard line.
I thought being lazy was a bad thing, So I gave up thinking.
Here's an idea
after watching the 102 yard interception return…lets put Paul Pratt as punt returner. What do you think of that?
+1
And we get an extra CB. Trade Williams, pay off high-priced Northcutt (I assume no one else wants him), and be rid of both. Blades, have ya got Mayhew on Twitter?
by LionFanInChiefsLand on Sep 4, 2010 2:01 PM EDT up reply actions
LMAO
He barely catches as many passes as northcutt
even tho they both suck balls I think we’re better off with a punt returner
I can see that
He was mainly just a special teamer and he banged up his knee against the bills. There maybe issues where it’s going to take a while to get back to 100%
does this mean toone is gone too, or will he be kept as a special teams player?

I don't think so
Released and waived is 2 different things …
Anyone waived … then STL has 1st dibs .. and whoever makes a claim has to pick up his contract in full ..
Released is just that .. now TJ can sign with ANY tean in the NFL .. for a minimum of 850, 000 whatever he signs for, he will get at least the balance of guaranteed from Seattle .. so it will be a contract for 850k .. with a team of his choosing
He will end up on the Vikings after he clears waiver's Watch and see
I thought being lazy was a bad thing, So I gave up thinking.
What is making me sick to my stomach is that
Mike Williams took his spot.

we need to cut northcutt and sign housh from seattle, there cutting him to keep make mike williams a starter and we would only have to pay 850k minimum.

Vinny, did get whacked.
Offical.
I’m not overly surprised that he got cut, I guess it means Levy’s groin shouldn’t keep him out for long.
Myron Rolle
Hey, Myron Rolle got waived by the Titans….I remember Detroit taking a strong look at this kid but he was drafted earlier then anybody thought he would be right?
I think the Titans are hoping that he clears waiver. To bring him back for the PS
He another young player with some upside.

Yes .. Schwartz likes him for some reason .. and he knows better than I do …
speed, as in recovery speed. He is a fast guy. His ball skill one on one is terrible but he does have speed. Its the only thing i can think of.

Schwartz sees something in King that no one else seems to
He had him at Tennessee. I don’t really see anything in King either to be honest. Now that we have Bly, he’s not the only veteran guy and we don’t need him for that veteran presence anymore.

Big kid out of Maryland.
We dratfted him last year in the 7th round, and last year was totally lost. This year was a completely different player. Huge upside.
He was from Wake Forest.
From what I’ve seen he is small like 5’9" and was never amounted to anything they had hoped. I think he was drafted very high like 2nd or 3rd round last year.
That was my first thought too BBlades LOL
I thought being lazy was a bad thing, So I gave up thinking.
Yes
And this was a strength of out team. We plan on running a bunch of 2 TE sets this year and having 4 TE’s I would think is a must. Smith is a developmental player, and does not inspire me at all.
He's got good potential.
Also, he fills a need. Now I wonder if we have traded a RB.
Just maybe..
Mayhew and company are thinking that the CB position is so bad, and thin, that we need to add some depth anyway possible. So they maybe thinking a TE becomes expendable when you consider value to the team.
Neither guy has produced much of anything
One was regarded as a 2nd round talent last year, the other as a 7th. It’s not like Gronk has lit the world on fire and proven he was a stud. He’s done nothing of the sort.
he's going to develop into a good TE.
The brother of Rob Gronkowski who was drafted by the pats.
Here is the deal on Phonz
he wasa Ballhawk coming out of college.
We traded a 1st in 2010 to draft him in the 2nd round of 2009
He had a very disappionting rookie year. He lost playing time to a practice squad player.
This off season, he has looked better. He certainly has upside. He is a high character guy, but we drafted Perrish Cox who is a STUD as is rookie SydQuan Thompson.
We simply didn’t have room for him.

the Broncos fans admit they were too hard on Alphonso Smith because of all the draft picks McD gave SEA to get him. They call Smith a real class act and wish him good luck with a fresh start in Detroit.

But i heard that there was no pick involved in this trade it was jus str8
player for player
For the Denver guys wondering about Gronk
He is a big tight end that does everything well but nothing great, he can pass protect, run block, and catch, but he is not super speedy.

he showed improvement and progressed awareness of where to go while running a route
