Nice

Another developmental corner to at least try to build the position around. Sure better than picking up old veterans just to plug in for a year. Houston, Smith and Wade give us a nice young trio…lets just hope at least one of them turns out to be respectable in the passing game.

Nice move

As good as Gronk may have been our depth at TE would’ve prevented hm from seeing the field. Smith has some upside.

MM for "GM of the Year"

I am very impressed with what Mayhew and the gang have done with the roster…. We just got a former 2nd round pick for a 7th round pick + undisclosed pick…..Mayhew must be playing Madden 11 – hardcore style…. This is unreal….

CB position
Bly – proven leader
Smith – trusty sidekick
Houston – the help
King – wiley old veteran

Nine games look like a reality this year……. Go LIONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

9 wins or better

I believe we have what it takes to win 9 or more games….. The vikings and bears would suffer some major injuries…. Lions might snick into the playoffs…….Suh and Best for DROY and OROY and the Kool Aid keeps on flowing

wow

sad to see gron go…

but a smith is one helluva pickup in this trade

by londonlion on Sep 4, 2010 4:32 PM EDT reply actions

based on the fact that he holds the record for interceptions in the ACC

the kid can play. They traded a 2010 1st round pick to get him in the 2nd round in 2009.

Just cause McDumbshit couldn’t do anything with him doesn’t mean we can’t.

We need help in the backfield, we don’t necessarily NEED 4 TEs.

by j16941 on Sep 4, 2010 4:40 PM EDT up reply actions

yup...

gron is a talented te…but we have a house full right now…

we need db’s that can add value more than more te’s sitting around

easy math for me

by londonlion on Sep 4, 2010 4:42 PM EDT up reply actions

Alphonso Smith might be almost worthless

for a former 2nd round pick from 2009 to be on the bubble in Denver makes me pretty nervous. sounds like he was just awful. maybe we can coach him up. apparently he got dinged in his last preseason game?

i thought Gronk would have a little more value. oh well.

by x$pcents IV on Sep 4, 2010 4:32 PM EDT reply actions

Like I have said...

Just like Scheffler, I am not gonna pass judgement on any player coming out of the Broncos system. McDaniels is an Idiot, and has set that team back 10 years.

I Say Take Em for Whatever you can Martin.

by j16941 on Sep 4, 2010 4:35 PM EDT up reply actions

hahaha, at least we know we agree on the Broncos situation.

Maybe that’s why they drafted Tebow, cause the only thing that is gonna save Denver is Divine Intervention. Pray ’em Up Timmy!

Tebow is so bad. i also think Denver is completely mismanaged.

by x$pcents IV on Sep 4, 2010 5:46 PM EDT up reply actions

no way

i saw Scheffler play—he was good. this guy sounds like a bum.

by x$pcents IV on Sep 4, 2010 5:06 PM EDT up reply actions

let's get the guy a # and a Jersey first, before we call him a BUM...

I don’t get the negative reaction to this move. I realize people liked Gronk, but really. How much was he gonna see the field as our 4th TE. Even if we do run 2 TE sets constantly he would get what, maybe 5-6 plays a game? Not catches but Plays….

I see this as a good move to bring in potential in a Position we Desperately need. And we did so by using some of the rare extra talent that we had. Good Move Martin.

I’m not crowning Smith as a Pro-Bowler, and I’m not screaming Playoffs Here We Come.

But I’m definitely not a Debbie Downer, Jeez people Cheer Up!

by j16941 on Sep 4, 2010 5:15 PM EDT up reply actions

Alphonso Smith is no BUM

I am not crowning him a pro bowler yet. However he has just been in the wrong scheme. His strength is man coverage and denver plays alot of Zone. Ironic for a team that has Champ bailey. Besides Alphonso Smith is better suited for 4-3 as against 3-4. With good coaching from Schwartz….. IMO Smith will be better than Cortlan FInnegan!

by Nomizee on Sep 4, 2010 5:23 PM EDT up reply actions

hope you are right

but he has been a bum for Denver.

by x$pcents IV on Sep 4, 2010 5:24 PM EDT up reply actions

If the kid can play man coverage while up on the line

even decently, he is an upgrade.

Lions fans deserve better than being the laughing stock of the NFL. Lets all hope they are heading in the right direction finally.

by joshsun on Sep 4, 2010 7:29 PM EDT up reply actions

not sure what makes you think he is better at man than zone… dude is 5’9" on a good day, not terrible muscular, so unless he is matching up with wes welker-sized receivers, he will be better off in a zone. that being said, i think he will be great as an underneath zone corner, being the ACC picks leader has to count for something

by KBerg on Sep 5, 2010 12:01 AM EDT up reply actions

not about getting Gronk on field (he wouldn't be seeing much of that)

i was just hoping that we’d get value back for Gronk. you are right though, we probably won’t be in 2 TE more than half time anyway. we probably don’t need to carry 4 TEs.

but switching jerseys on a guy ain’t gonna make him better in coverage. we have big needs at CB, but at least get a guy that a team has trouble parting with (and not because he was a high 2nd round pick). i really hope we can coach this guy up and make him a player—but I’m just saying that he was pretty far down on the totem pole at Denver. i doubt this guy will get 5-6 plays a game.

by x$pcents IV on Sep 4, 2010 5:23 PM EDT up reply actions

not switching jersey, but switching to a Man-Coverage Scheme will.

and he IS GOOD in Man Coverage. Which is more than I can say for some of our DBs (I’m looking at you King, even though you don’t see me, cause you never turn your head around)

by j16941 on Sep 4, 2010 5:27 PM EDT up reply actions

yep

King didn’t get his head turned. i see lots of guys doing that. at least he wasn’t getting burned or blowing his assignments.

we can both agree that he was good in man coverage in the ACC. can’t say much about the NFL.

by x$pcents IV on Sep 4, 2010 5:48 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah,

I wonder if King turned his head in time to see that he was GETTIN’ CUT!

He is better than what we have. I just appreciate him trying to improve instead of standing pat.
Mayhew is not GM of the year…but this a good move. Gronk wasn’t going to make the team. We don’t need 4 Te’s. Now get rid of Williams and make uus really happy…

for the first time Mayhew makes a fair trade…everyone benifits…Is that leagal

I had a dream were the Lions let me sign a 1 day contract they let me practice with them running drills and catching passes from Matt…At the end of the day I was called into Mayhews office. I was told I had just been traded to seattle for a 5th round draft pick.

by The Profiler on Sep 4, 2010 4:36 PM EDT reply actions

Thanks for the video

Is Denver as stupid as Seattle?…I’m not saying this kid is fantastic or anything, but you give up a 1 for the draft slot and trade the player the next season? That’s just dumber then F.

I didn't say "Fast" as in a 40 yard dash.

I said “Quick” as in, Instinctive and Reactive. Smith had 21 INTs in college, He led the nation in picks his 2nd year and finished as the all-time ACC leader in INT.

I’m Starting to think you are just Prejudice against people with the last name of Smith.

i donno what to think of this

a 2nd round CB for a 7th TE?? wtf is wrong with smith??

if a top 5 CB in camp cant teach him the ropes i donno that we can

by det32 on Sep 4, 2010 4:58 PM EDT reply actions

I think the question is "wtf is wrong with Denver??"

And I think the answer is “It all started when they Fired Shannahan.”

by j16941 on Sep 4, 2010 5:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Probably a lot of fan expectation.

Especially when you give up a 1 for the pick. Could be overwhelming.

I see Mayhew’s thinking, and I’m good with it. Team speed just increased again.

And I loved Gronkowski.

by delusional on Sep 4, 2010 5:03 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

yeah, but we got smaller too

team speed? Smith BETTER be faster than Gronk.

maybe we can enjoy our enhanced “team speed” watching him running sprints on the sideline. he runs like a 4.5 right? maybe we can move him to safety right behind Spievey (who can’t cover or tackle based on what i’ve seen so far)

Hate to be a pooper but we have no reason to be optimistic about Smith. he was on his way out of Denver from what i’m reading.

by x$pcents IV on Sep 4, 2010 5:35 PM EDT up reply actions

i really hope i'm wrong

about Spievey and Alphonso. we need talent back there.

by x$pcents IV on Sep 4, 2010 5:50 PM EDT up reply actions

can't blame Denver for this move

Alphonso was on the bubble on even making the team from what I’m getting from Denver fans. They end up getting a 2nd string TE for a guy they were about to cut.

Denver has made a lot of bad moves but this was probably a good one. Some teams have trouble getting away from guys they draft high. Derrick Williams is just not any good.

by x$pcents IV on Sep 4, 2010 5:16 PM EDT reply actions

who knows

maybe Gronk could start there after they parted with Scheffler. Getting Scheffler was definitely a Mayhew.

by x$pcents IV on Sep 4, 2010 5:16 PM EDT up reply actions

and who knows...

Maybe Smith comes here and Replaces Wade or Houston as one of our Starting CBs.

I don’t give much credit to the Broncos Scouting or Coaching. Just cause they were gonna get rid of the guy doesn’t mean he has no potential. (it prolly means just the opposite actually)

by j16941 on Sep 4, 2010 5:20 PM EDT up reply actions

there is an infinitesmal chance you might be right

but you still see my point about Denver’s motivation right? even if he gets to play here, he wasn’t going to be playing there significantly anyway. so there is more upside than downside for Denver in this move. there is upside for us, but i’m just saying i wish we got more for Gronk.

by x$pcents IV on Sep 4, 2010 5:37 PM EDT up reply actions

In return we got a former 2nd round pick.......

Smith will play nickel for a little bit before becoming the no. 2 corner before the end of the season…. I said it.

by Nomizee on Sep 4, 2010 6:06 PM EDT up reply actions

and Gronk was gonna get cut here...

we got something for nothing, what more do you want. realistically?

Denver got something out of it too… Mutually Beneficial.

by j16941 on Sep 4, 2010 5:43 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah,

maybe because they knew we had to let him go, we couldn’t get full value for him.

by x$pcents IV on Sep 4, 2010 5:54 PM EDT up reply actions

by GhostofLionspast on Sep 4, 2010 6:49 PM EDT reply actions

its all part of the plan

hes not the final solution to to our problems at DB but he will be part of the solution, we just added depth to the CB position, and he has lots of upside since hes only a second year player, all that for a player that was not going to make our roster just because we have depth at TE, and probably Denver has depth at CB so they decided to trade him.

by Nour E on Sep 4, 2010 7:31 PM EDT reply actions

This trade really is a win win situation?

We get much needed help at a weaker position and give up a player from a stronger position.

They give up a player at a stronger position and gain a young and promising player at what I would have to assume is a position of weakness?

Anyone know if they needed TEs?
