NFL Roster News: Lions Trade Gronkowski for Denver CB Alphonso Smith
Adam Schefter is reporting that the Detroit Lions have traded TE Dan Gronkowski and an undisclosed draft pick to the Denver Broncos for second year cornerback Alphonso Smith.
This seems to be a perfect trade for both teams. The Lions have a nice selection of tight ends and it was very likely Gronkowski was going to be cut anyway, while the Broncos couldn't seem to find a spot for Smith and the Lions are one of the most cornerback needy teams in the league. Mayhew continues to show his prowess for scouring other team's rosters in search of suitable trade partners for players that are unlikely to make our final 53.
UPDATE: Per Tom Kowalski, the Denver Broncos had planned to cut Smith based on his performance.

The question is
Can this guy return punts? Somebody on the other thread said he did it in college. If he’s a viable punt returner could this spell the end for Northcutt? Man I hope so!
for the 101st time now
Northcut is guaranteed 1.5 Mil this year. He is NOT going anywhere…
Kong of the Jungle----Best of the Beasts!!
Damn, I really liked Gron with his shown progress this season
Hopefully, he gets a chance to actually play there. That franchise is falling apart. I wish you luck Gronk.
Glad we found a corner, lets hope the guy can play.
Lions fans deserve better than being the laughing stock of the NFL. Lets all hope they are heading in the right direction finally.
I really like this trade.
Just yesterday we were wondering if they would cut Gronk and now he helped us get someone who should help out our back 7.
I do too, but I wonder what the knock on him is?
I mean, Denver’s just not gonna cut him for nothing. I know they have depth and I’m hoping that’s the bulk of the reasoning, but is there something else here? It’s likely in the end, we are only giving up a pair of seventh rounders, which isn’t much… especially if the kid shows why he was taken in the second round last year.
Still… you don’t give up on a second round pick – a guy they GAVE UP a first round pick for to trade up to get – if you don’t have some serious doubts. Interesting……
with Bly here
he will be taught right…. and they played together
GO LIONS in 2010! the transformation starts now.. they have much to do.
Here is a link from Walterfootball on 2009 CBs
They had Alphonso ranked as the #4 corner. Did not mention his punt returning. Maybe I was thinking about DJ Moore?

I could be wrong about the returning, although I heard them talk about it on the Draft Day video.
Tied with Dre Bly for interceptions in college.
Now he’s on the same team!
good luck Gronk...
3 Gronks brothers in the NFL for the first time?
still he’s young with potential like L Jackson… if they play how they were drafted we have much to look forward to… Both players are wanted here… the new surrounding could be HUGE for US!!!!
bears get ready!!! I already called a W in Chicago! I will stand by it!!!
GO LIONS in 2010! the transformation starts now.. they have much to do.
meaning Alphonso... on the new surroundings
GO LIONS in 2010! the transformation starts now.. they have much to do.
I think there is a lot of upside
A 2009 7th round pick that I like a lot, at a position we are deep at for a player that lead the ACC in interceptions and was a 2009 second round pick?
I think it is a good trade.
Ok maybe I’ve have drank to much hops and barley flavored Kool-Aid. What if all the planets align and young players like Follett, Levy, Caleb Campbell, Phillips, Spievey and Alphonso Smith workout?
I’ll even throw Paul Pratt in there so Paul’s Dad (a.k.a on POD as Wayne Fontes) is happy.
We may have a back 7 that complements our Dline next year.

wrong system maybe
Maybe they wanted to use him other than what his strong suits are. I guarantee Mayhew and Schwartz did some homework on him before pulling the trigger.
37 ?!?!?
Solid move
great job, Mayhew!
Good luck to Gronk

Without a doubt
a good trade for us.

Like It! Now Cut Northcutt Loose
…it’s worth a mil and a half for us NOT to suit him up.

Only time will tell if we Mayhew'd or got hew'd.
I really liked Gronk and thought that he should hae made the team. We needed help at cb more than te so i hope this really helps the secondary out.
Can we stop talking about releasing Smitty and Hanson now....
Were going to....
Have a whole load of cuts here any minute now, along with hopefully another trade.
Someone here earlier sniffed out a DET/DEN trade happening earlier today. Just the names were wrong….props to ya.

Det to Den
Yeah I think somebody said K Smooth to Denver. I thought DeDe might be picked up by Denver. Denver was in the air all morning lol
I think Silver Rush said Det talkin to Denver about trading K Smith
When it was actually A Smith A sounds like K so totally excusable
I thought being lazy was a bad thing, So I gave up thinking.
silver-rush is the guys name
sorry I called bullshit on ya, silver-rush. A lil mix-up in the names but you nailed it

I hear ya about the 12th
I think the Lions are gonna win that game. It might not be pretty, but I believe we are on the verge of seeing the birth of a very physical, intimidating defense. Still a few pieces away, but the core is forming nicely

mayhew....
another HUGE move if not for improved depth…a former first… this is another improvement for the team…
GO LIONS in 2010! the transformation starts now.. they have much to do.
Not a first
A Smith wasn’t a first rounder. He was early second rounder. However, Denver did trade a first round pick to move back to 37th overall to get him
Ladies and gentleman
This is how you spell MAYHEWED. trade away a former 7th round pick that we didn’t need for a corner that still has a ton of potential.

parrish cox made him redundant
and a much more economical solution…
will miss gronk & wish him all the best in denver…possibly setting up as a toy for tebow down the line…
but smith is a welcomed addition in our db by committee…just hope he can also add to return game now
Eric King Released
cmccosky
Eric King has been released. I talked to him before he got the news — ugh. Hate that.
YES!!!!!
I’m sorry for celebrating someone losing their job, but he needed to go.
Good luck to Eric King. Hope he can catch on with a division opponent

I'm not normally the vindictive type, but may I say
Nah nah nah nah
Nah nah nah nah
Hey Hey Hey
Goodbye!
Interesting... he's on my fantasy team... took him in the 11th round.
Could pan out now that he’s on the Vikings.
Drew you have the power...
could you put up an open cut day thread on the front page? There is like four running threads. Like to see one main on the front page
if the shoe fits...get another one just like it - George Carlin
its cool that we have all this activity. And I know Sean is at the U of M game
But I would like to see one central spot on the front page for this stuff.

Tooting my horn I called it in the other thread
I thought being lazy was a bad thing, So I gave up thinking.
Yea, but ya'll know how much I like to toot

SHOCKED
Ravens cut QB troy smith
I had a dream were the Lions let me sign a 1 day contract they let me practice with them running drills and catching passes from Matt…At the end of the day I was called into Mayhews office. I was told I had just been traded to seattle for a 5th round draft pick.

and if we keep K Smooth
that debate will be fun all season long.

he had a uphill battle all preseason with Buf having drafted 2 rookie RBs
but from what I saw in the Game we played them. He has some skill. I don’t know how all the rules work though, with if he was Waived or Released. Do we get 2nd priority off the wire or is he free to sign with anyone now?
damn
millen ruins the lions and i hate hearing his dumbass on the michigan game. damn can he just go away!!!
Just another example
How ESPN has no respect for the State of Michigan. What program director with an I.Q greater than their shoe size would put Millen as color on this game.

J Bell
The bills just released this guy….. Sounds like a good pickup for the practice squad
Steelers
Jus released Stefan Logan who nearly 1,750 return yards last season
sounds like a northcutt replacement they both cant contributed on offense but
atleast he isnt a 2mil slacker and he’s still young
Nice Trade
We got Scheff from Denver ..
We got Sims from Seahawks ..
Corey from cleveland
Jackson from Seattle
Now this guy … 2nd round pick for a 7th rounder (+ conditional).. and our coaches might make him fit .. coach him …
Funny .. we get Sheff from Denver and trade them our 3rd stringer :)
Interesting
Alphonso Smith still has upside. Hopefully he realises his potential here.
RIP Robyn Bailey 1961 - 2010. I love you mum.
Jonathan Hefney?
I didn’t see Jonathan Hefney on the cuts list or on the current roster. I’m assuming that he was cut though, because I count 54 if I include him.
