NFL Roster News: Lions Trade Gronkowski for Denver CB Alphonso Smith

Adam Schefter is reporting that the Detroit Lions have traded TE Dan Gronkowski and an undisclosed draft pick to the Denver Broncos for second year cornerback Alphonso Smith.

This seems to be a perfect trade for both teams.  The Lions have a nice selection of tight ends and it was very likely Gronkowski was going to be cut anyway, while the Broncos couldn't seem to find a spot for Smith and the Lions are one of the most cornerback needy teams in the league.  Mayhew continues to show his prowess for scouring other team's rosters in search of suitable trade partners for players that are unlikely to make our final 53.

UPDATE:  Per Tom Kowalski, the Denver Broncos had planned to cut Smith based on his performance.

The question is

Can this guy return punts? Somebody on the other thread said he did it in college. If he’s a viable punt returner could this spell the end for Northcutt? Man I hope so!

Yes blades he can lol

Damn, I really liked Gron with his shown progress this season

Hopefully, he gets a chance to actually play there. That franchise is falling apart. I wish you luck Gronk.

Glad we found a corner, lets hope the guy can play.

Lions fans deserve better than being the laughing stock of the NFL. Lets all hope they are heading in the right direction finally.

I really like this trade.

Just yesterday we were wondering if they would cut Gronk and now he helped us get someone who should help out our back 7.

by coolbreeze42 on Sep 4, 2010 5:03 PM EDT reply actions

I do too, but I wonder what the knock on him is?

I mean, Denver’s just not gonna cut him for nothing. I know they have depth and I’m hoping that’s the bulk of the reasoning, but is there something else here? It’s likely in the end, we are only giving up a pair of seventh rounders, which isn’t much… especially if the kid shows why he was taken in the second round last year.

Still… you don’t give up on a second round pick – a guy they GAVE UP a first round pick for to trade up to get – if you don’t have some serious doubts. Interesting……

by SmittyJ on Sep 4, 2010 5:12 PM EDT up reply actions

He

Didn’t pan out the way Daniels hoped and I guess instead of coaching him up.
He decided to trade him away so he wouldn’t have to take his tebow time away lol

with Bly here

he will be taught right…. and they played together

No they didn't

Smith was a rookie last year and Bly played for the Niners last year.

Here is a link from Walterfootball on 2009 CBs

They had Alphonso ranked as the #4 corner. Did not mention his punt returning. Maybe I was thinking about DJ Moore?

Link: http://walterfootball.com/draft2009CB.php

Another: http://www.fftoolbox.com/nfl_draft/profile_display.cfm?prospect_id=1682

I could be wrong about the returning, although I heard them talk about it on the Draft Day video.

good luck Gronk...

3 Gronks brothers in the NFL for the first time?

still he’s young with potential like L Jackson… if they play how they were drafted we have much to look forward to… Both players are wanted here… the new surrounding could be HUGE for US!!!!

bears get ready!!! I already called a W in Chicago! I will stand by it!!!

I think there is a lot of upside

A 2009 7th round pick that I like a lot, at a position we are deep at for a player that lead the ACC in interceptions and was a 2009 second round pick?

I think it is a good trade.

Ok maybe I’ve have drank to much hops and barley flavored Kool-Aid. What if all the planets align and young players like Follett, Levy, Caleb Campbell, Phillips, Spievey and Alphonso Smith workout?

I’ll even throw Paul Pratt in there so Paul’s Dad (a.k.a on POD as Wayne Fontes) is happy.

We may have a back 7 that complements our Dline next year.

wrong system maybe

Maybe they wanted to use him other than what his strong suits are. I guarantee Mayhew and Schwartz did some homework on him before pulling the trigger.

Only time will tell if we Mayhew'd or got hew'd.

I really liked Gronk and thought that he should hae made the team. We needed help at cb more than te so i hope this really helps the secondary out.

Have a whole load of cuts here any minute now, along with hopefully another trade.

I think the Lions are gonna win that game. It might not be pretty, but I believe we are on the verge of seeing the birth of a very physical, intimidating defense. Still a few pieces away, but the core is forming nicely

Not a first

A Smith wasn’t a first rounder. He was early second rounder. However, Denver did trade a first round pick to move back to 37th overall to get him

Ladies and gentleman

This is how you spell MAYHEWED. trade away a former 7th round pick that we didn’t need for a corner that still has a ton of potential.

and a much more economical solution…

will miss gronk & wish him all the best in denver…possibly setting up as a toy for tebow down the line…

but smith is a welcomed addition in our db by committee…just hope he can also add to return game now

Ravens cut QB troy smith

I had a dream were the Lions let me sign a 1 day contract they let me practice with them running drills and catching passes from Matt…At the end of the day I was called into Mayhews office. I was told I had just been traded to seattle for a 5th round draft pick.

he had a uphill battle all preseason with Buf having drafted 2 rookie RBs

but from what I saw in the Game we played them. He has some skill. I don’t know how all the rules work though, with if he was Waived or Released. Do we get 2nd priority off the wire or is he free to sign with anyone now?

Nice Trade

We got Scheff from Denver ..
We got Sims from Seahawks ..
Corey from cleveland
Jackson from Seattle

Now this guy … 2nd round pick for a 7th rounder (+ conditional).. and our coaches might make him fit .. coach him …

Funny .. we get Sheff from Denver and trade them our 3rd stringer :)
