NFL Roster Cuts: Lions Establish 53-Man Roster

The final round of NFL roster cuts took place today, and the Lions trimmed their roster down to 53 players by parting ways with the following:

RB DeDe Dorsey

WR Brian Clark

WR Tim Toone

WR Mike Moore

OG Noah Franklin

OT Jon Jansen

OT Cliff Louis

C  Dan Gerberry

DT Landon Cohen

DT Jaron Baston

DT Robert Calloway

LB Caleb Campbell

LB Vinnie Ciurciu

CB Dante Wesley

CB Paul Pratt

CB T.J. Rushing

CB Dre' Bly

CB Eric King

S  Ko Simpson

K  Steve Hauschka

Waived/Injured - DE Korey Bosworth

Also, as previously mentioned, TE Dan Gronkowski was traded to the Denver Broncos along with what is thought to be a late round draft pick for second year CB Alphonso Smith.

I guess the surprises today are probably Jansen, Bly and King.  Jansen appeared to be a lock as he and Cherilus shared time with the starting unit throughout the preseason, but in the end, the youth movement sealed his fate.  King was made expendable by a trade few saw coming.  Although his play left a lot to be desired, I believed that he would make the final roster for his contributions at the nickel spot.  As for Bly, I'm not sure what to think.  I guess once again getting younger as a team is the likely reason, but I sure thought there was a place for him on this roster.

In case you didn't notice, Kevin Smith is not on this list.

I agree

Most of the cuts I agree with but, I would have liked to have kept Hauschka. I got used to watching longer kickoffs than Jason could muster for the last 5 years. I feel sorry for Campbell
the most. Don’t be surprised if he and Toone come back.
Major disappointment – Northcutt still on team. I guess we didn’t want to shed our desire
to see more dropped passes, kickoff returns, and punt returns. What are the coaches seeing that we’re not?

Expectations don't produce!

pardon me for the error

Maybe we should cut him then since it’s only $1.3 guaranteed

yep im sick of KOs to the 12 yd line

Hauscka seems to be a better option than Hanson at this point, Jason has been pretty good .but hes missed 5-6 game winners in the past 3-4 yrs.and his KOs are low line drives to the 12 yd line and other teams start off near the 35 every time.field position has killed this team in recent yrs

Thanks for your input ralph........and welcome back!

I would love you to list the five to six game winners he has missed the last three or four years.

Also, the bad field position was mostly due to turnovers and lousy coverage. And frankly even if the teams had poor field position they still would march at will against our defence.

WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Unbelievable. I’m not impressed with these moves in the least. Seems like a round of money cuts even though we’re no where near needing to make money cuts. I’m starting to definitely lose my faith in Mayhew and company with these cuts. It’s not just these cuts, but they do really put a topper on my building thoughts all offseason.
Honestly now, how was Landon Cohen cut? Biggest surprise for sure. Played awesome this preseason. Same can be said of Bly. I haven’t seen any of our corners play to the level he has. And how the fuck are we cutting our 5-6th best OL? We are VERY thin in the OL department and Cherilus is making it much thinner playing the way he has. How does JJ compete for a starting spot all preseason to be cut? Terrible. And Northcutt still on the roster? Questionable at best.
Also how are the following players still here? Aaron Berry, CC Brown (the human torch), Ekijubia (sp), Corey Hilliard, Ashlee Palmer, and John Wendling?? Possibly several of the worst players in the NFL IMO.
In the end, I’m not a professional talent evaluator or an NFL GM, but I, as well as anybody else that considers themselves an honest amateur talent evaluator, definitely has to question the logic behind these moves. Guess we’ll wait and see. But anything less than 6 wins this season should be a real indicator of Mayhew and company. Because we had no reason before these cuts to win less than 6 games. Let’s hope some signings are on the way… Houshmanzadeh, etc.

Lions Rant Artist

Are you serious? These players being cut were part of the worst team in history. Cohen did play well this off season and preseason, mostly against 2nd and 3rd teamers, but lets be honest. He is no where near the talent of the players ahead of him on the depth chart. fluellen plays ST and can play any position along the D line, versatility can not be undervalued out of your role players.

Bly on the other hand was a surprise to me too. Perhaps I am biased because I loved him before he was traded but it does not change reality. The corners the Lions kept are all much younger and have a ton of room to develop and grow.

Safety is the same situation. Tons of young players with a lot of potential and room to develop and surprise us.

Don’t take me wrong, I hate the condition our secondary is in right now but if you have a chance you may as well gamble on the younger player hoping one of the 4 you have at the position, safety or CB, actually does develop and grow.

Unlike years past, we have a young team that has room to grow and mature.

Lions fans deserve better than being the laughing stock of the NFL. Lets all hope they are heading in the right direction finally.

Isiah was the Special Teams captain from what I had heard.

They signed the guy as a free agent for a surprising amount of money. He is supposed to be a special teams demon. Not sure why people are down on him, the Lions thought it was a bit of a coup to get him.

I like the move to youth that we are seeing.

I think Schwartz and Mayhew would have liked to do more of this last year but they just did not have the talent in the younger players to justify doing this.

This is a very young team. Especially the DBs. We still have a good sprinkling of vets within every position group so we are not ridiculously young.

by NorthLeft12 on Sep 4, 2010 9:14 PM EDT reply actions

Definitely

It’s a reason to not get our hopes too high this year, but it’s also a reason to be very optimistic about how the team will look two years from now.

Right now, I feel like I would bet my life savings that the Lions have at least 10 wins in 2012. We’re gonna be really, really good in a couple of years, whether the rest of the league knows it or not. I’m excited.

You can bet if we do trade anything we would be looking for CB IMO, we have some good line backers, they are just hurt.

I went to the Saints SB site and they voted him the most surprising cut.

Not by much, but I did not see anything that said anyone on the site was glad he was gone. They traded up to grab him in the fourth round so they must have wanted him.

Casey Claussen should be in the HOF LOL

I had a dream were the Lions let me sign a 1 day contract they let me practice with them running drills and catching passes from Matt…At the end of the day I was called into Mayhews office. I was told I had just been traded to seattle for a 5th round draft pick.

FYI on John Wendling

John Wendling doesn’t get much notice because the Lions didn’t pick him up until Aug. 27th. So he didn’t get much playing time in preseason. But he had three years with Buffalo where he was a decent backup and VERY good special teams player. He was named as the best special teams player in the AFC East last season. A lot of the Bills fans were not happy when he was cut.

What ever happened to Tim Hiller from WMU?

I know his knees were about shot, but the Colts signed him as an UDFA. I’m assuming he’s long gone to the UFL or Europe or somewhere though.

like the cuts

cohen had value. campbell and toone to practice squad—happy to see they will get more looks. other than that i don’t question these cuts.

i think dorsey could probably sign with someone—probably denver. liked Gronk but we traded him, being too deep at TE (love being deep at a position). Clark wasn’t bad.

would have cut Northcutt and Morris. Jansen was a surpirse but cant’ keep 5 OTs. probably would have cut D Williams out of spite for dropping that gut shot and running poorly in that reverse (vs. Buffalo).

I still wonder why a former first round draft pick who’s own college coach pretty much gave him away is more deserving of a roster spot then a guy who played for us last year and was productive.
