NFL Roster Cuts: Lions Establish 53-Man Roster
The final round of NFL roster cuts took place today, and the Lions trimmed their roster down to 53 players by parting ways with the following:
RB DeDe Dorsey
WR Brian Clark
WR Tim Toone
WR Mike Moore
OG Noah Franklin
OT Jon Jansen
OT Cliff Louis
C Dan Gerberry
DT Landon Cohen
DT Jaron Baston
DT Robert Calloway
LB Caleb Campbell
LB Vinnie Ciurciu
CB Dante Wesley
CB Paul Pratt
CB T.J. Rushing
CB Dre' Bly
CB Eric King
S Ko Simpson
K Steve Hauschka
Waived/Injured - DE Korey Bosworth
Also, as previously mentioned, TE Dan Gronkowski was traded to the Denver Broncos along with what is thought to be a late round draft pick for second year CB Alphonso Smith.
I guess the surprises today are probably Jansen, Bly and King. Jansen appeared to be a lock as he and Cherilus shared time with the starting unit throughout the preseason, but in the end, the youth movement sealed his fate. King was made expendable by a trade few saw coming. Although his play left a lot to be desired, I believed that he would make the final roster for his contributions at the nickel spot. As for Bly, I'm not sure what to think. I guess once again getting younger as a team is the likely reason, but I sure thought there was a place for him on this roster.
In case you didn't notice, Kevin Smith is not on this list.

I agree
Most of the cuts I agree with but, I would have liked to have kept Hauschka. I got used to watching longer kickoffs than Jason could muster for the last 5 years. I feel sorry for Campbell
the most. Don’t be surprised if he and Toone come back.
Major disappointment – Northcutt still on team. I guess we didn’t want to shed our desire
to see more dropped passes, kickoff returns, and punt returns. What are the coaches seeing that we’re not?

pardon me for the error
Maybe we should cut him then since it’s only $1.3 guaranteed
Kong of the Jungle----Best of the Beasts!!
yep im sick of KOs to the 12 yd line
Hauscka seems to be a better option than Hanson at this point, Jason has been pretty good .but hes missed 5-6 game winners in the past 3-4 yrs.and his KOs are low line drives to the 12 yd line and other teams start off near the 35 every time.field position has killed this team in recent yrs
Lions Super Bowl 2012
Thanks for your input ralph........and welcome back!
I would love you to list the five to six game winners he has missed the last three or four years.
Also, the bad field position was mostly due to turnovers and lousy coverage. And frankly even if the teams had poor field position they still would march at will against our defence.
Ralphie! Where ya been?

WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Unbelievable. I’m not impressed with these moves in the least. Seems like a round of money cuts even though we’re no where near needing to make money cuts. I’m starting to definitely lose my faith in Mayhew and company with these cuts. It’s not just these cuts, but they do really put a topper on my building thoughts all offseason.
Honestly now, how was Landon Cohen cut? Biggest surprise for sure. Played awesome this preseason. Same can be said of Bly. I haven’t seen any of our corners play to the level he has. And how the fuck are we cutting our 5-6th best OL? We are VERY thin in the OL department and Cherilus is making it much thinner playing the way he has. How does JJ compete for a starting spot all preseason to be cut? Terrible. And Northcutt still on the roster? Questionable at best.
Also how are the following players still here? Aaron Berry, CC Brown (the human torch), Ekijubia (sp), Corey Hilliard, Ashlee Palmer, and John Wendling?? Possibly several of the worst players in the NFL IMO.
In the end, I’m not a professional talent evaluator or an NFL GM, but I, as well as anybody else that considers themselves an honest amateur talent evaluator, definitely has to question the logic behind these moves. Guess we’ll wait and see. But anything less than 6 wins this season should be a real indicator of Mayhew and company. Because we had no reason before these cuts to win less than 6 games. Let’s hope some signings are on the way… Houshmanzadeh, etc.

Are you serious? These players being cut were part of the worst team in history. Cohen did play well this off season and preseason, mostly against 2nd and 3rd teamers, but lets be honest. He is no where near the talent of the players ahead of him on the depth chart. fluellen plays ST and can play any position along the D line, versatility can not be undervalued out of your role players.
Bly on the other hand was a surprise to me too. Perhaps I am biased because I loved him before he was traded but it does not change reality. The corners the Lions kept are all much younger and have a ton of room to develop and grow.
Safety is the same situation. Tons of young players with a lot of potential and room to develop and surprise us.
Don’t take me wrong, I hate the condition our secondary is in right now but if you have a chance you may as well gamble on the younger player hoping one of the 4 you have at the position, safety or CB, actually does develop and grow.
Unlike years past, we have a young team that has room to grow and mature.
Lions fans deserve better than being the laughing stock of the NFL. Lets all hope they are heading in the right direction finally.

Sounds good
1 less DB and an extra LB … I was hoping for that .. 6LB and 10 DB would have been too unbalanced .. 7 and 9 sounds good
I only counted 8 DBs, who am I missing?

Boy, is that a thin CB group... yikes.
There’s gotta be another move coming…. don’t ya think? I mean, Berry played one preseason game and Smith was going to get cut. Neither Wade nor Houston was all that impressive. I’m very nervous about that. The Bly cut just doesn’t make much sense to me…..
Speed would be the reason
in this system, DB’s need to be speedy ..
That would be true
Unproven lot .. But at least they might catch up to some WR’s .. compared to Bly ..
we're in agreement
alot of youth. With no teeth yet. Well other than the Predator

Isiah was the Special Teams captain from what I had heard.
They signed the guy as a free agent for a surprising amount of money. He is supposed to be a special teams demon. Not sure why people are down on him, the Lions thought it was a bit of a coup to get him.
I just didn't think he was all that great in this preseason...

I didn’t see much of Boiman to be able to draw a conclusion like that.
Oh you didn't know?? You're ass better CALLLLLLLL SOMEBODY!!!!!

Some of the players the Lions kept really dont make any sense…why Boiman or this John Wending guy?
The beginning of the end of the misery
Yep, FA from Tennessee
One of the only Titans guys Schwartz brought over last year

I guess I have to let this digest...
I don’t know what to say. I keep looking for the common theme as to the who stayed and who got cut.
Cohen?…wtf
Bly….slow
I guess they have a fondness in keeping the players they draft and speed with upside.
by delusional on Sep 4, 2010 9:01 PM EDT via mobile reply actions
I agree, Bly and Cohen are questionable cuts. They must have something up their sleeve still, we are at bare minimum DB wise…
by Motorcity Badboy on Sep 4, 2010 9:04 PM EDT reply actions
It made sense to cut Bly
After we got Smith. We have our four corners that we need. Bly really wouldnt add anything
The beginning of the end of the misery
They kept Fluellen
and we knew it was either gonna be Cohen or him leaving. Guess the Coaching Staff liked the Flu better.

COHEN AND BLY?
Cohen and Bly?! really?? Why weaken an already weak secondary by cutting our 2nd string corners..I like Schwartz but I’m really confused by this. And Cohen played fantastic!! I don’t see how Fluellen deserved a spot over him.

Cut is impossible
trade is more likely .. to get something for him .. But Jets won’t budge .. No cut or trade ..
And he won’t sign with lions if cut … trade is our only chance
trade means nothing if he still refuses to play
It would have to be some sort of sign and trade.
Lions fans deserve better than being the laughing stock of the NFL. Lets all hope they are heading in the right direction finally.
yes .. of course
We will have to agree to a contract with him
He's not worth 15 mil a year to me
For that kind of money you could sign 3 good players, or 1 ok player and 2 great players
by WestsideLionsFan on Sep 4, 2010 9:22 PM EDT up reply actions
No way man...
15 mill per year is ridiculous…he is talented, but I would rather have two or three good players vs 1 great player any day.
Oh you didn't know?? You're ass better CALLLLLLLL SOMEBODY!!!!!
There's no cap... so who cares... lol
We’ll get him to play for this year and then ask him to renegotiate next year. When he won’t, we trade him for a couple first rounders. Win-win!
And at this point....
there aren’t two or three good players to be had. There’s one… maybe. And it’ll take a LOT to get him.
All I can say is don't bet on it....
Oh you didn't know?? You're ass better CALLLLLLLL SOMEBODY!!!!!
I'm not counting on it, man....
I’m mostly goofing around about Revis. I know it was a hot topic a few weeks back.
Schwartz said cuts were going to be tough
this is something I will get used to
I like the move to youth that we are seeing.
I think Schwartz and Mayhew would have liked to do more of this last year but they just did not have the talent in the younger players to justify doing this.
This is a very young team. Especially the DBs. We still have a good sprinkling of vets within every position group so we are not ridiculously young.
I will take a fast young guy that needs to learn to turn his head over an aging vet that cant get there any day
Ndamukong Suh - Bringing 60's football back to Motown!

Definitely
It’s a reason to not get our hopes too high this year, but it’s also a reason to be very optimistic about how the team will look two years from now.
Right now, I feel like I would bet my life savings that the Lions have at least 10 wins in 2012. We’re gonna be really, really good in a couple of years, whether the rest of the league knows it or not. I’m excited.
I think Andre Goodman is the last former Lions DB left standing
Bodden, Fisher, Alexander all cut or injured. I can’t think of anyone else out there.

I still think we might trade some guys before week 6
Stanton, Maybe a RB (Smith or Morris), Maybe a DE (some think we only got LoJack to work his trade value up)
You can bet if we do trade anything we would be looking for CB IMO, we have some good line backers, they are just hurt.
Ndamukong Suh - Bringing 60's football back to Motown!
I've been thinking about the DEs.
I am not in favour of doing this but is it possible that out of our DEs they might trade Cliff Avril?
I say that because he would have the highest trade value…….I think.
Fonted has a nice ring though, it sounds like it would be anally painful.
Ndamukong Suh - Bringing 60's football back to Motown!
I thought stanton would have been traded today,
after that last pre season game his value has never been higher
Best guess at our eight man practice squad?
Maybe…
Mike Moore, Tim Toone, Noah Franklin, Dan Gerberry, Cliff Louis, Robert Callaway, Caleb Campbell, and Paul Pratt?
Roster Isn't Final
Don’t forget that other teams cut a ton of guys today too. Only the Rams are higher on the waiver wire so we basically can get the guy we want. I’m sure we will pick up a DB that Mahew had his eye on.

I see at least two moves yet.
Those two cats that signed this week, Boiman and Wendling are at risk. Barely know the system. We’ll grab a linebacker and safety off the wire and this roster doesn’t look half bad…

I did not know that about Flu.
If the guy is smart enough and motivated enough to work at being that versatile then I am all for keeping him.
I just have never been impressed by his play at DT.
I went to the Saints SB site and they voted him the most surprising cut.
Not by much, but I did not see anything that said anyone on the site was glad he was gone. They traded up to grab him in the fourth round so they must have wanted him.
I did read a comment that the Saints under Payton are not afraid to cut fourth rounders.

FYI on John Wendling
John Wendling doesn’t get much notice because the Lions didn’t pick him up until Aug. 27th. So he didn’t get much playing time in preseason. But he had three years with Buffalo where he was a decent backup and VERY good special teams player. He was named as the best special teams player in the AFC East last season. A lot of the Bills fans were not happy when he was cut.

I had a dream were the Lions let me sign a 1 day contract they let me practice with them running drills and catching passes from Matt…At the end of the day I was called into Mayhews office. I was told I had just been traded to seattle for a 5th round draft pick.
What ever happened to Tim Hiller from WMU?
I know his knees were about shot, but the Colts signed him as an UDFA. I’m assuming he’s long gone to the UFL or Europe or somewhere though.

like the cuts
cohen had value. campbell and toone to practice squad—happy to see they will get more looks. other than that i don’t question these cuts.
i think dorsey could probably sign with someone—probably denver. liked Gronk but we traded him, being too deep at TE (love being deep at a position). Clark wasn’t bad.
would have cut Northcutt and Morris. Jansen was a surpirse but cant’ keep 5 OTs. probably would have cut D Williams out of spite for dropping that gut shot and running poorly in that reverse (vs. Buffalo).
Jason Hunter. . .
survived the cuts in Denver. . .still would have liked to keep him in the rotation. . .best of luck to you. . .sorry that you left a team that is improving to go to a team that is imploding
He actually has been playing well as an OLB in the 3-4
Plus, now that Elvis is out for the year, they need all the help they can get at that position.

Blair White
I say we drop Northcutt and grab Blair White who was just cut from the Colts. He would be a great 4th WR
DT Robert Calloway has been signed to the Detroit Lions practice squad, according to Bo Marchionte of the NFL Draft Bible.
he didn't mean it like that

How is Stevie Brown for Mich?
I see he was a late cut by the Raiders.
Maybe worth a look
Oakland has a pretty crowded secondary and there may not have been room for Stevie
Just curious about his college days
I don’t follow Mich, mainly from living in Hawaii.
I read he is pretty solid( had a good preseason)
Raiders are just crowded at safety

supposedly everyone in the Raiders FO wanted to keep him.
But Al Davis Stuck his “Old Cryptkeeper Nose” in there and screwed it all up.
Let’s take a look at him.
Lions picked up up TE and Special Teams expert Spencer Havner from recelently released GB!
I love this move! Talk about a football player! He was just behind too many TE’s in GB and they couldn’t afford a spot for him and now he’s in the D!
I bleed gatorade and poop pigskins
Seems odd
Why pick up another TE? Heller seems pretty entrenched in that 3rd spot.

I think you have to add Birkett to get up to the minute updates
otherwise you get several hour old tweets
I thought being lazy was a bad thing, So I gave up thinking.
That must be the problem, thanks

Sorry
I didn’t realize that all of his followers tweets showed up if you weren’t signed into twitter so when I clicked on his link I was only seeing the two tweets that he posted. He posed the tweet about Dennis Northcutt about 45 minutes ago
No need for an apology
I should get with the times like you youngsters and sign up for these new-fangled technodoohickeys lol

Cohen, Jansen and Bly seem to be the biggest cuts to which I have concerns...
Not big concerns, but I still would’ve liked them on the roster.
RIP Robyn Bailey 1961 - 2010. I love you mum.
