I see stuff taking shape …

We finally have our own players we are developing … not just longing at players developed by other teams ..

Why didn't we cut Rameriez and slide Jansen over?

I had a dream were the Lions let me sign a 1 day contract they let me practice with them running drills and catching passes from Matt…At the end of the day I was called into Mayhews office. I was told I had just been traded to seattle for a 5th round draft pick.

Good but still some holes that they could fix.

Ashlee Palmer for Matt Whilhem
Macho Harris for CC Brown
John Wendling for Al Afalava
Aaron Berry to the PS for Tye Hill or Brandon McDonald

Can we stop talking about releasing Smitty and Hanson now....

Well

Whilhem can either take Palmers spot on special teams or start and Follett takes Palmers spot. CC Brown can be replaced by Spievey or Harris, it’s about making the roster stronger which it would do and having your depth step up on ST which i think would happen.

Can we stop talking about releasing Smitty and Hanson now....

by SmittyJ on Sep 5, 2010 5:15 PM EDT up reply actions

Hmmmm

When looking at the entire roster in that format, we actually look like a decent NFL team. There aren’t that many holes to fill as we are all use to the past decade and the secondary looks somewhat dare I say “good”?

Also, the Pats just cut Tyrone McKenzie. He missed the entire season with a ACL injury and was a 3rd round pick a year ago out of South Florida. Do not know much about him but college highlights looks decent and he has a big body at 6’2’’ 243 lbs.

by Calvin21 on Sep 5, 2010 5:08 PM EDT reply actions

He's versatile

Probably won’t use him at TE. It boosts our special teams and can be occasional LB.

by Calvin21 on Sep 5, 2010 5:10 PM EDT up reply actions

When you run 2 TE sets all the time having 4 is a good thing

Besides Scheffler is not really a tight end in the pure sense of the position, he can easily play slot receiver.

I tend to agree, that would also free up another roster spot, but Det would have to do their homework

and make sure this guy is not going to end up in a loony bin somewhere before they make that move

roto

Titans waived RB LeGarrette Blount and LB Stanford Keglar.

Keglar was a special teamer, and not a grea one at that. Blount made it through Saturday unscathed, but Tennessee has elected to move forward with just two tailbacks on the final 53 — Chris Johnson and Javon Ringer. With a great line in front of them, Ringer is a must-have handcuff for CJ2K owners.

Get Legarette Blount!!!

Here’s what most people don’t realize…
This regime wants to play power football. They want to be boring and take time off the clock and then play D. That’s the explanation for the roster. That’s why four Te’s and four Rb’s. The problem is, this team is not built for power football. We have thin backs and an avg. (But getting better) O line. Picking up a guy like Blount, or #27 from the Giants gets you closer to what they want to be. Plus, with Bests history you don’t want to put too much strain on him with carries. Get Blount, and now you can let Best do what he does…best. Return kicks, go out wide, And run the ball. I’m not saying Best isn’t an everydown back. He is! But I am saying you’re asking a lot out of him if you expect him to carry the ball 25 times a game.

Nobody expects Best to get 25 carries per game.

He will not get 25 touches per game. Not one RB in the league last year averaged 25 carries per game. Benson had 23 to lead the league.

The reason the Lions have two tight end sets is to increase the pass protection for Staff. This team is going to be a passing team, with runs mixed in. Every RB that Detroit has, including Felton, is a good receiver. One of the reasons they kept KSmith is his ability to pass block. Ditto for MoMo.

I am not sure where this belief in power football comes from. The Lions personnel choices under Mayhew and Schwartz don’t back that up. Maybe “power football” is different than I think it is. Please define what you mean.

Also, a big no to Blount. Nobody appears to be in a rush to sign him. I wonder why?

by NorthLeft12 on Sep 6, 2010 7:13 AM EDT up reply actions

Left field...

Where does the “power football” reference come from?

1. The Lions are in 2 wr sets 80% of the time. This essentially allows the 2 WR to be doubled teamed by the safeties. That’s not a recipe for passing success…

2. How many times have you seen the Lions in 4 wr sets? How many times do you see the Colts & Patriots (true passing teams) in 4 WR sets? If the way to pass in this league was to go 2 WR, you’d see it more often.

3. There has been (from what we can tell) not much effort in finding a 4th WR, when most on this site agree at the very least that Derrick Williams is not ready right now. Stefan Logan has caught 1 pass in his career. Vincent Jackson, Terrel Owens, Patrick Crayton, TJ, and many other lesser known WR have been available this summer. We’ve never heard the Lions name mentioned with any legit WR.

4. So let me get this straight…you don’t want Blount because nobody else seems interested…My guess is you don’t have too many problem finding boxers that fit…

Other players nobody seemed interested in…

Kurt Warner
Tom Brady
Terrell Davis
Priest Holmes
Wes Welker
James Harrison
Robert Mathis
Jeff Saturday
Marcques Colston
Etc etc etc

No I don't like Blount because he is not a good Running Back.....

…the fact that other teams are not snatching him up confirms this belief.

So if Detroit is a power football team why do we have all these small RBs? And Felton is not our #1 RB?

I guess you can use those facts to support your belief that Mayhew and Schwartz and Linehan are morons and don’t know how to run a football team.

Let’s face it, we are all just guessing [you, me, Drew, Sean, Killer, Birkett, etc.] exactly what the Lions have planned and exactly what philosophy they intend to employ. We just have to look at their personnel moves and judge from there.

Enjoy the season!

by NorthLeft12 on Sep 6, 2010 11:15 AM EDT up reply actions

The Lions first teams have been lining up

in 3+ wide reciever and shotgun formations close to 40% of the time. That does not seem to fit with the “Power Football” philosophy. Yes, they do use alot of 2 TE’s in these sets. But with how the Lions are using the TE’s. That does not necessary mean power football.

JC, are you counting Scheffler as a WR when he splits out?

Or Best or Brown too?

I did not remember seeing any four WR sets or that many three WR sets. It is possible that I missed it.

by NorthLeft12 on Sep 6, 2010 12:55 PM EDT up reply actions

I went to the Sean's breakdown of the play by play 1st team preseason write-ups

I read that most of the shotgun formations. Used two TE’s lined up in they normal spot. On the offensive line. There were a few 4 WR’s using BJ and Northcutt along with Calvin and Nate. And a couple of empty backfield formations. Using 4 WR and a TE. But rarely did the Lions line-up in a tranditional power formation. Using a RB, FB, 2 WR, and a TE.

The Patriots do NOT run 4 wr sets all the time. They use what they have to work with.

In fact most preseason they have been in 2 TE sets. They drafted both Gronkowski and Hernanddez this year and use them both on the field a lot, not to mention they picked up Crumpler.

The most accurate description I ever heard of the Patriots offense is “the run and shoot with two tight ends instead of slot guys”.

The Lions do similar things and there have been a lot of empty backfields with only 2 wide receivers on the field. But I guess that Staff will run some power run scheme quarterback draws out of that huh?

Our team has some ability to run a power goal line set however the core of our players suggests anything but a power run game approach. The core of our players coupled with the formations we use in fact suggests a spread run game approach.

he's an upgrade over Felton

I really don’t get what the coaches and everyone else sees in Felton. I can’t recall any great plays but I can remember him whiffing on numerous pass-blocks/blitz pick-ups. Plus his run blocking sucks. I mean really, really sucks with epic fail on top. How can you be a fullback and suck at run blocking? No wonder so many folks think Kevin Smith sucks, looks who supposed to be clearing a path for him!

I’m not saying he is Stellar. But he is adequate. Tony Richardson is 38, that’s right 3-8. The guy is asking to Break at anytime. How long do running backs last in the NFL? And how long has TRich been in the league?

A pure FB like Richardson does not make a lot of sense for us. Felton can run and catch, and block [not very well…yet] so he fits our scheme better.

as a return specialist. Logan finished the 2009 preseason with 5 kickoff returns for 185 yards and 9 punt returns for 191 yards and a touchdown. He also had 2 carries for 27 yards on reverses. Logan was rewarded for his performance with a spot on the 53-man roster. In 2009, he broke the Steelers single-season record for return yards. On September 4, 2010, Logan was released by the Steelers.

I am fine with releasing Northcutt, he hasnt done much good for us and I dont think he can at his age… But, who is going to be our kick and punt returners this year? My vote is for Aaron Brown, I like what I’ve seen out of him this preseason. What do you guys think?

I don't know about you guys

but this roster seems pretty solid. I’m feeling some guys coming into their own this year. If Randy Phillips is the starter next to Louis, I could see him doing some good things for us. Like most people I still see LB as a little weakness, but who knows. Minus Peterson, I think as the season goes on we will see Levy and Follett improving each week. If we get solid, not great, play from our secondary and LB’s, this team could team could get pretty scary pretty quick. Also, I’m happier to see Northcutt gone than just about anybody. Maybe Stefan Logan could be a diamond in the rough for us and change some games by giving us great field position. We’ll see how it goes but I’m more excited for week 1 this year than I have been in a while.

by asol8mc1 on Sep 5, 2010 10:15 PM EDT reply actions

Week 1

I think the Lions have skipped a couple levels this year. From cellar dwellers to potential playoff contenders. I’m guessing 2 players away in the backfield. 2 Cb’s away from contention. Weak at LB as far as backups go… But Peterson, Levy and Follet as starters! ?! ? You can’t get much better than that!

by ColtsFanatic on Sep 5, 2010 11:41 PM EDT reply actions

LB Depth?

I can’t say that I’m surprised to see Rocky Boiman released, but I am curious to see how our LB depth shakes out now. With Jordan Dizon out for the year, Boiman seemed to be a lock at backup MLB, especially given his familiarity with Jim Schwartz and Gunther Cunningham’s system. Isaiah Ekejiuba is now the only MLB on the roster behind an injury-prone DeAndre Levy, and let’s be honest, Ekejiuba will probably see about as many snaps at MLB as Stefan Logan will see at WR. He’s really a career special teams guy.

I’m interested to hear how all of you expect the LB situation to shake out. It seems likely to me that Landon Johnson will be moved back from OLB to MLB, and that Ashley Palmer will be asked to fill in as our backup OLB on both sides of the field behind Julian Peterson and Zack Follett. Thoughts?

by mattverhage on Sep 6, 2010 12:34 AM EDT reply actions

I definately see Landen as the best option at MLB if Levy is out.

I like Ekejiuba but he is not young enough IMO to spend time grooming, therefore he only plays in an extreme emergency. Also keep in mind hat we can always call Boiman back if needed and resign him. Say god forbid Levy cant recover, and Landen Johnson goes down. Then we just call up the “Bioman” and plug him in there.

how I see it.

Starters: Follett – Levy – Peterson

Landon will be 2nd MLB

Palmer will be 2nd OLB

Full 2nd String: Palmer – Ekejiuba – Landon

And Lawrence Jackson will be emergency stop gap. Don’t forget he played OLB in Seattle’s 3-4

One word, OLD

the players we kept are all considerably younger than he is. I see his cut as an admittance from the coaching staff that while he may have been a better player the younger guys have a ton more upside and time to play left to play. The coaching staff is ready to take some lumps this season in the secondary with the young guys hoping one or two pan out and prove themselves to be keepers. I hope they are right.
