Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Baby Lions

With the 53 man roster set (or relatively set), I found some interesting numbers that I wanted to share.

Star-divide

  • The average age of the Lions overall is: 26.4
  • The percentage of roster over 30 years of age: 17%
  • The average age of the Lions starters on offense: 26.2
  • The average age of the Lions starters on defense: 25.7
  •  If I take out the three players above 30 from that list: 23.7
  • The number of Lions with no NFL experience: 7
  • Average NFL experience of a Lions player: 3.8 seasons
  • Average NFL experience of a Lions offensive starter: 3.9 seasons
  • Average NFL experience of a Lions defensive starter: 3.3 seasons
  • If I take out the three players above 30 from that list: 1.4 seasons

Wow

Great research. That is a very welcoming thought since the Lions are just starting to take that next step we’ve been waiting on for about a decade now. Once this team is a contender, that age factor and the team chemistry should help out a lot as most of these current guys should all be a part of the resurgence of the Detroit Lions.

Are we the youngest team out there now? I would not be surprised if we are but there are still a few moves to be made, one including bringing in a veteran LB or corner but great research.

Rec’d again.

Exactly the reason why

we shouldn’t be overly optimistic about this year. It’s going to take a year or two for these guys to learn the NFL game and build some cohesiveness. Still, it shows why we should be very optimistic about the team’s future.

I agree but...

I still think the Lions can win 5 or 6 games even with all the youngsters. Next season though… look out!

Being Young

Means the potential super bowl window is longer which makes the Lions and Packers less urgent to have the planets allign then the Bears and Vikes which are relatively old.

As long as........

We keep the same O and D coordinators again, and again.
Otherwise, it goes to hell again, and again!

Expectations don't produce!

Being young isn't bad

The Packers have been the youngest team in the NFL for 4 straight seasons and we maybe for a 5th straight I heard and I like our outlook

Good work. I was planning on doing this tomorrow.

The Lions are moving from being one of the oldest teams to one of the youngest. The future is looking mighty fine……..at last!

great work

thought it was about BIG BABBY for a minute lol

I had a dream were the Lions let me sign a 1 day contract they let me practice with them running drills and catching passes from Matt…At the end of the day I was called into Mayhews office. I was told I had just been traded to seattle for a 5th round draft pick.

Cool research

We are very young seemingly. Which means we have time to develop.

RIP Robyn Bailey 1961 - 2010. I love you mum.

2008 roster was much much older

We weeded out most of our old , washed ups

0-16 season was even younger on avg.

Check your facts. I just pulled the 0-16 season opening 53 man roster, and the average age was even lower than this year.

by Holden36 on Sep 9, 2010 8:33 AM EDT up reply actions

You sure?

We had an older starter at almost every position.

stats without a baseline...

how does this compare with other teams? or the NFL in general?

you definitely make your point and i don’t doubt that we are a younger team—but to go through all the trouble of computing these things, and then not comparing to other teams, seems like a pointless exercise. maybe you can give someone else that task.

Wow, awesome job doing this. Just think how talented we are now just wait until all our players mature.
