You will still see alot of Kevin Smith

Yes - a hot topic, but I just want to set our RB situation straight.   Best is our starting RB, but don't see him getting the full load - not now and maybe never.

Best: He should IMO get 12-18 touches a game; I said touches not carries.   He's great on sweeps, tosses and can make a quick cut inside, and bust one loose, but do you want to over work a small back given his history.   Getting the most out of him means keeping him healthy for a full season, which is why he should be treated like china plates.   Best could do the most damage in the 4th quarter when the D-line is worn down, but he has to be fresh and healthy to do that.

Smith: I can see him getting 10-15 touches a game. He's still a grinder and coming off injury.   How he came back so quickly is amazing to me, but he will get carries to ease the load on Best.   He had a decent rookie season followed by a decent sophmore season cut short by injury. Schwartz is a smart coach and knows what he has in Smith.  Maybe he's not the workhorse back we thought, but he will be a good 2nd RB in our system.

Morris: Morris is what he is - a back  up if Kevin gets injured again. Morris looks good in small doses and can stand in as a spot starter like he's done his entire career.  But I believe he's in his 30's now, and it's not worth considering giving him Smith's job. I think we all know he probably won't be on the next year, but he is good insurance if Smith gets hurt this year or has a set back.

Brown: Brown got the nod over Dorsey because of his speed and has a role much like Morris; if Best gets hurt he'll fill his void as the speed back while Smith grinds out tough yards.   The coaches probably hope he can be the RB that will allow them to lose Morris in 2011.

Felton: I love this guy,  but he's our FB and nothing more.  He'll get some tough goal line carries along with 3rd and short carries when he just has to plow over guys.   He does his best work catching the ball with space to plow over guys when he's in the open field.  He did get some carries in the preseason that teased us all, but he's our FB not our power runner.  If the coaches wanted him for that, Smith probably would have been released - allowing him for that job.

Overall: I don't think any of our backs will break the 1,000 yard mark, but they will have a very feared back field to opposing D-lines

Best- 880 yards rushing with 6 TD's

Smith- 675 yard rushing with 5 TD's

Morris- Clean up work

Brown- 1 or 2 TD's on long runs or screens

Felton 1 or 2 TD's on goaline carries

Good article

I can somewhat agree with you on that. Now most fans, including myself, would want to see the best playmakers on the field on every down let alone have the ball in their hands all the time but you have to look at the fact that these guys are human and fatigue always sets in and their bodies get dinged up and about so like you said, you cannot overwork a guy especially a rookie back in Best who has a series of injuries in college including that major fall he took just a year ago.

As for the stats, I can see the yardage being right about right but the touchdowns not so much. If Best does stay healthy throughout the season, I see him notching the 10 TD mark if not more with his explosive ability. I see 12 for him with most coming off of long runs off course and the rest on screens out of the backfield or the slot.

Agree

Except, Best – 1200 yards IF, he stays healthy.
And, I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see Brown get more yards than Smith because,
K can’t stay healthy. He’s not right yet and, being tentative trying to hit the hole, is going to get him creamed, sooner or later.
Brown is greatly improved and, has the confidence to get it done. Especially if he doesn’t have to do returns with A. Smith in the fold.
I don’t think many will agree with this but, it’s all conjecture anyway.

but he has never had great speed and dosnt brake tackles..

look at how are offense looked when we had best brown or dede out there.. we rarly had a negitiveplay or a 3-out.. but when smith was out there we had alot of them

i am just not convenced he will come back after seeing him the past 3 games

He's coming off major knee surgery, what the F do you expect

it sounds like you havn’t watch him his 1st or 2nd year and just judge him off this preseason.

Thank you Sean!

I was just gonna post that if this was the original K-smooth post… a lot of spewing of crap would have been avoided. This post imo is the most logical, intellegent view of what the Lions are doing with running game. Nice post msivits!

Do you think the Lions could use a 47 yr old 220lb cornerback that runs a 5.02 40 that will take your head off?.........will play for beer!

by LonnieLion on Sep 5, 2010 10:19 PM EDT up reply actions

Oh man.......

I think most would agree that if we didn’t have Best, we still wouldn’t have a running game to open up the passing game. Smith just hasn’t proved he can do that!
I don’t hate K, we shouldn’t even use words like that, ever! He’s a decent player and a good person. We NEED a running game that is better than decent. Without it, our offense isn’t going to open up the way we need it to.

Expectations don't produce!

Some of us see Smith as crappy

I know I think Smith should have been cut. Seriosuly man Smith can’t get past the first guy that touches him and to me that says he sucks. I would rather snag one of the guys from someones practice squad like Bell as long as he won’t go down by a mere sneeze or a light breeze like Smith.

he either need to be turned into a slot guy or cut

Lets be honest det32 is right

Smith is “good” at everything, running, blocking, catching… and “great” at nothing. He will make an very good rb2 but in no way is he rb1 material on a good team. And to the auther of this article. In Ksmooths best season, when he was the best rb on are team he had barely more yards and less tds then ur projection…. r u on fucking crack?

the top 32 backs avg for 2009 added up is 130.5 / that by 32 and you get 4.0 (smith was at 3.4)

by Sean Yuille on Sep 6, 2010 2:31 PM EDT up reply actions

Well...

Not the biggest Kevin Smith fan either but you can’t bash on the guy for not doing much so far on a bad team. His rookie year dating back 2 seasons ago, he was a 24 yard run away from grabbing 1000 yards for the season and had 8 TDs on a BAD BAD team, the 0-16 team.

He followed that up with a 747 yard injury-plagued season on a BAD team. Now imagine what he can do with a DECENT team and another weapon alongside Stafford in Best along with the newest outside additions in Burleson and Scheffler and an improved offensive line with the addition of Sims.

Again, I am not the biggest Kevin Smith fan but you have to give the guy a chance. He is only 23 and still has his legs. He might not be fast or powerful but he is better than the average back and is of some value if he doesn’t work out being that young.

Plus, when other teams game plan against the Detroit Lions, do you think they’ll give much matter to Kevin Smith? That is a huge positive for him since all the focus on the defenses will most likely be of Jahvid Best and where he is lined up. Once Smith checks in, the defense will probably take a break and that’s when Smith can take advantage and go to work.

Yes he is not the flashy type or even type of back one would want to see get 20 or so carries a game but whenever you have a problem that consists of having the luxury of getting rid of a guy who has been decent to say the least and is a backup now, that would be the least of my worries when you have so many other holes to fill on the roster.

This should be the year that decides Kevin Smith’s future in Detroit.

One last thing to point out, he is in his contract year so you never know what type of production he may put up with the motivation of earning huge money next offseason ala Albert Haynesworth.

Can we stop talking about releasing Smitty and Hanson now....

by SmittyJ on Sep 5, 2010 10:22 PM EDT up reply actions

Smith may not even dress for the first game or two if they think he has not completely recovered.

But in the long haul he will get around 12 touches per game IMO. And be very important to the success of this team.

And just to clarify what MoMo does here, he can run, catch, and especially pass block. He picks up the blitz better than any other RB on this team. And KSmith does a pretty good job at that too.
Brown and Felton and Best have a lot to learn before they can be trusted with picking up blitzers. Cause folks, the Lions will see blitzers this year. A lot I am thinking.

The idea of getting rid of Smith and Morris for someone like Blount is just moronic

There’s a reason the Titans cut him. Just as there is a reason the Lions haven’t cut Smith or Morris.

There’s a reason Dorsey was cut. Sure, he looked good against second- and third-stringers, but big deal. It’s no secret that Dorsey can’t catch on anywhere.

I agree with him

Smith vs the 2nd stringers looked like shit and DeDe looked pretty good against the same 2nd string players. The only that that killed DEDE was his ball security. Aside from that he smoked Smith on every facet of his game. Sorry guys but Smith blows. The only reason he is still around is because he was serviceable when we sucked. Look for him to be cut next year, maybe this year if we can run across a decent back to snag to replace him.

Did you check if our O-line did the job equally for everyone ?
Did you check WR’s ran routes and blocked like they were supposed to?
Did you check that everyone faked correctly, so defenses bit on fakes ?

Just give it up man …

Dude

We all know that this team looks MUCH MUCH better with Best out there as a running back but you can’t hide the fact that Kevin Smith would make possibly an excellent 2nd back since all the attention will be on Best and the rest of that offense.

Best or Dede or whoever your complaining about cannot last all game behind the line, at some point, he needs a breather and thats where Smith takes over the role after being starter for the past two season. No one is saying he is beast but he is of value to this team.

by Calvin21 on Sep 5, 2010 10:41 PM EDT up reply actions

lol

Brown cannot last five carries behind center. His pass protection is horrible while that is part of Kevin Smiths more underrated aspects of his game. Dede is a one time wonder, he shows up one game, goes away the next ten. There is a reason why he was released and available when the Lions grabbed him, and is still available right now. If all five of those guys you ranked where released RIGHT NOW aside from Best, who do you think gets the most attention in free agency???

Easy answer, Smith.

by Calvin21 on Sep 5, 2010 10:46 PM EDT up reply actions

Morris or brown would

brown is young and has potential

Morris is more balanced

smith is injured

by det32 on Sep 5, 2010 10:48 PM EDT up reply actions

No chance

32 teams passed up on Brown 6 times before the Lions grabbed him in the draft and 31 other teams passed up on Morris when we signed him while Smith was drafted third round and considered a sleeper pick.

Morris had all the chance in the world to do something once Smith was injured for the year but did not produce enough to even garner the back up role this season. He is next to go on the cut line.

I’ll take an injured 23 year old back who notched over 1000 total yards both his first two seasons over a rookie who can’t pass protect and an old Morris who did not do anything when given chance.

you do realize that smith was a 2 yr starter

and that he does pose some kind of threat he will be able to do somethings running and catching etc.. that dede has NEVER DONE IN THE NFL.. through out the past to drafts/trades/FA the coaching staff and FO has stated this from day 1 BEST PLAYER AVAILABLE.

just b/c the have starting experinc dosent mean there tight for the team

i will post this aghen

the top 32 backs avg for this preseason added up is 169.1 / that by 32 and you get 5.2 (smith is at 2yards)(befor week 4)
the top 32 backs avg for 2009 added up is 130.5 / that by 32 and you get 4.0 (smith was at 3.4)
the top 32 backs avg for 2008 added up is 131.1 / that by 32 and you get 4.0 (smith was at 4.1)

why do you want to setle for avg?? that isnt good enough for me

all in all, 5 touches-31 yards. 6+ yds per touch
Smith is excellent at pass protection, has really good hands catching out of the backfield and consistantly gets the tough 3-4 yards. That is what a good 3rd down back/RB2 is supposed to be. He’s alot like Kevin Faulk or Chester Taylor. I can live with that

by Calvin21 on Sep 5, 2010 10:55 PM EDT up reply actions

This is how the football business works

1st year – You draft a RB .. he gets you 900 + yards behind a shitty line
2nd year – he gets injured
3rd year – He is ahead of schedule .. But he will have effects of his surgery still .. so you don’t cut him
4th year .. he gets way better ..

Cut him and you look stupid when he does better with another team .
Keep him and you look smart if he does better .. and if he doesn’t, everyone knows it was an investment that smart people hold on to logically .. and sometimes it doesn’t work ..

by Libran on Sep 5, 2010 10:56 PM EDT up reply actions

All I'll say

That your idea of addition by subtraction does not make sense in this situation – regardless of how well you think the team ‘flows’ with ‘speed backs’ in, the fact is that the investment of Smith coupled with past performance is reason alone to hang onto him. Add in the fact that you won’t get shit for him in a trade, and cutting him is just pointless. He’s absolutely worth more than plenty of guys on the roster, so if the spot means that much to you, cut one of our DL or WRs.

So you just want to through that out the window too because it was the past? Isn’t this preseason in the past too now?

Per Wikipedia:

On January 15, 2009 Best underwent surgery to tighten a ligament that had been injured when he dislocated his left elbow against Colorado State on September 27, 2008. This was followed up by foot surgery on January 23 to relieve the irritation of an extra bone that was caused when Best bruised his foot halfway through the 2008 season.

Best was injured during the second quarter of Cal’s November 7 matchup against Oregon State. In the process of scoring a rushing touchdown, he hurdled a defender into the end zone and was accidentally pushed by a second Oregon State defender in mid-air, causing him to land on the back of his head with his helmet coming off. The play resulted in a concussion for Best.2829 After a 13-minute game delay, Best was taken off the field to the Highland General Hospital in Oakland. This was his second concussion in two weeks, following a mild concussion received the previous week against Arizona State.

If you think a guy with that kind of injury history is LESS of a liability at 20 lbs lighter and 2 inches shorter than Smith, you’re crazy. Just my opinion.

FINAL VERDICT

Kevin Smith is in his “contract year”. We all know what that means in today’s NFL. This season can make a millions worth a difference, literally.

If he goes all out and has a great year then he will get paid like it. However, if he fails like det32 says he will, then he will not be on this roster any longer.

Contract years bring out the best in every player and I guess time will tell.

by det32 on Sep 5, 2010 11:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Finally someone else sees that Felton is not a good RB.

I can’t understand why people think he automatically plows into the end zone from three yards out….the first try. He is a good receiver, is okay in the middle of the field on surprise carries, and does not block very well. But when they know he is coming……forget it.

I have watched him in the preseason and regular season and he does not get into the end zone on his first carry from the two. They tried this last year people and he could not do it. He got stuffed by the Buffalo scrubs a couple times this preseason before finally getting in on his third try. That is not a guy who “MOVES THE PILE”.
I think Felton needs to improve this year or he is gone. They cannot wait forever for this guy.

by det32 on Sep 6, 2010 9:03 AM EDT up reply actions

How long is forever?

I mean, I like Felton, but his ‘forever’ is YEARS, whereas Smith’s forever is… well, since what, the last week or two of the season?

Most players are out for a year after an ACL and their teams hang onto them. Smith is fighting back to play for us and you want to cut him. I think someone else hit the nail on the head when they said that you don’t respond to hard work and loyalty by cutting a player.

There are things called free agents, and free agents don’t want to come to a team that is ruthless and will cut guys who put their heart on the field just because of an injury. Trust me, they have choices, especially marquee FA’s, and that does factor in.

iwatched the last preseason game and watched smith bull his way in to the endzonei also watch him catch a lot of pass out of bacfield this preseason and from want i can tell he did not miss any billitz pickups. ialso think the lions will have both best and smith play in some to back set this year .

by kwfords on Sep 5, 2010 11:19 PM EDT reply actions

Linehan has said they will use Best everywhere on the field so I wouldn’t be surprised at the two set back formation. Kevin Smith can block while Best gets the ball either short out or toss.

K Smith should be cut – gone – out of here!

I think cutting KS would send a very good message to all current Lions players. If you play for the Lions and have a major injury, they you work hard in rehab to comeback ahead of schedule it means nothing. Let’s send a clear message to any player that has a great attitude, works hard and wants to play for this team, if you get hurt – GET LOST we do not want you.

What?!?!?!

Dude, check your facts. Go listen to Kevin Smith interviews – the guy is the most hardcore, upbeat, serious player I’ve heard on the Lions until Suh came aboard.

If you want to actually talk with a factual basis, you should look up interviews of his last year and in his rookie year. Inspiring. Aside from that, go ahead and listen to this and tell me he’s got a bad attitude

“(The coaches) are installing the system, starting with the offseason workouts, and having some good attendance there and having guys come together and work and seeing each other and being around each other. Y’know, everybody’s believing. It starts now, getting ready for the season. …

It was great debating this but at the end of the day, it is Smith’s contract year and he will come through, if not, he’ll be let go next offseason. Sounds fair to me.

Whether he is 100% or not, he has showed some guts in returning so quick and that should say something but this is the NFL and your only judged by game production and rings.

LoL See I go and have a Yahoo Fantasy Draft and you guys have all the fun while I am away!

Well I think it would be freaking smurfy to get Blount, but I would cut Morris not Smith. But I don’t think we will get him. The coaches had experience with him in the Senior Bowl and I think they saw things they didn’t like. I hope I am wrong on that because I do think he is a beast mode runner and would put Felton to shame on the goal line. In fact, if he replaced anyone other than Morris on the roster it would be Felton.

As far as cutting Kevin Smith that is just not a smart move at this point for several reasons. For one we are going to have a lot of two back sets just like we have a lot of two tight end sets. Kevin can do everything well and is a perfect compliment to be out there in a two back set with Best, Brown or Felton. Morris is pretty much a mirror of Smith. Reason two was touched on above, it is a bad bad message to the locker room to cut an injured player that is/was part of the nucleus of the team, without givng them a chance to fully recover and prove themselves. Heck they even gave DeVries a fair shot at recovery and he was not near to this team what Smith has been the past couple of years in terms of on field production. And DeVries had nothing over Smith off the field either, Kevin s a great leader and though he is young acts like a vet already. A third reason to keep Smith and not cut him is because he is a good young back and when he does fully recover, if you want to move on from him, you can get a lot more in trade value with all of his health questions answered prior to the trade. Reason 4 who are we going to pick up that is going to be more talented than Kevin Smith? So far I have seen us picking up guys that are special teams aces, which is good, but they cannot net us the down to down production on offense that Kevin does. Even LaGarett Blount, whom I am very high on, would be highly unlikely to out produce Kevin when he is healthy. Cutting Smith in favor of Blount would be a gamble and not the right thing to do at this time. Down the road that might be different, but that is down the road. Bottom line is that now is not the right time to cut or trade Smith even if we wanted to.

Naw he played hurt all last year for the team. Did you know that?

He had two bad shoulders all year and just kept going out there and throwing his body into the meat grinder for us. You cannot turn you back on a guy that sacrifices himself like that for the team so quickly, it would destroy our locker room morale and you would not get players to play hard anymore.

here are my thoughts on Smith

like I said, I’m not a big Smith fan. And yes, I copied and pasted myself again.
Smith is excellent at pass protection, has really good hands catching out of the backfield and consistantly gets the tough 3-4 yards. That is what a good 3rd down back/RB2 is supposed to be. He’s alot like Kevin Faulk or Chester Taylor. I can live with that for my RB2

I’m not anti-Brown. I’m saying Smith is a more complete back. Brown is the slot receiver the Lions have been searching for.

I can also ell you something that Smith can do that no one else seems to be able to do in our backs

Score a freaking goal line TD. Seriously Felton has proven nothing there and neither has Best. Until someone can make those tough goal line yards and make the “money shots” Ksmoove will still be very needed on this roster.

Besides do you really want best in there getting pounded by 300 LB linemen all the time?

Also Schwartz will run Best as much as he can handle it

Even in the draft he talked about how a lot of smaller backs have been workhorses, CJ2K, the dude in Carolina, I forget his name right now (Deangilo Williams?), Maurice Jones-Drew, hell Warrick Dunn played for what like 14 years? Hell its not like Barry was a big back. Bests injuries are not from him getting hit, much like Barry he plays angles and players don’t get too many clean shots on him, thought they get some. Most of his injuries came of stupid flukes, dives into the end zone and crap like that.

Ndamukong Suh - Bringing 60's football back to Motown!

by Evilsmurf on Sep 5, 2010 11:48 PM EDT reply actions

Barry only carried the ball over 20 times per game in five of ten seasons.

His highest carries per game average was 22.8 in 1991.

Personally, I thought the Lions used Barry perfectly through his career. I see Best being utilized along the same lines, a little less due to the guys we have behind him that can take some of the slack.

it just dosent make seans to me you you guys love smith so much

what has he done this year that proves he can be good in this offenc??

for gods sake look at the facts.. our offenc look 10x better when we had a speed guy back there…

i am sick of holding on to mid core players that nevere pan out… and all of them seem to have this un needed love fallowing them.. news flash… he has never been more then a avg back.. there are 100s out right now just like him..

he can ceatch.. not any better then the other backs we have now
he can bock .. morries is better and from what i have seen so far he isnt much if any better then best.. brown has inproved trmendisly in this aspect
he cant rush.. he goes down the 1st hit… its getin a little anoing that he cant brack a tackle

so i will ask you aghen what has he done THIS year to prove he diservs a spot on the team..

Sheet, you guys still debating this topic?

I’m done with it. I can understand his frustration with watching slow ass KS with zero burst, and being tripped up buy baby finger tackles at times. I’m sick of it also, but will defer to the staff’s decision and go with it.

Someone pointed out, Smurf I think, that for benefit of team moral you have to give a player that has fought his way back a chance to get back on the field, I’ll go with that thinking as I feel the mental part of playing plays a makes hugh difference in wins and losses.

So let’s get this season started. I also think Morris will be gone in the next day or two.

by delusional on Sep 6, 2010 12:11 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

moral

it can go both ways..

give the guy that won the job the job.. i mean how would you feel if you out preformed someone but you where the one cut b/c the one you out preformed had a injure

and on top of that it what player is right for the team.. not what player has more talent.. not what player has done more in his career but what player clicks more.. and that was not smith

by det32 on Sep 6, 2010 12:26 PM EDT up reply actions

True....

Look. we have both said KS has a hugh heart and is a great teammate and team player. In this case it might be best to at least give him the chance to get all the way back. For team cohesiveness…There’s no doubt in my mind that if he’s sucking, he’ll be gone quickly.

Some of the topics on here lately have been really terrible. And we have gone on ad nauseum about them. I have already given up on responding to any slams on KSmith. Sorry Kev, you will just have to bear the burden of some on POD wanting you cut without me to call them out. Just play man.

by NorthLeft12 on Sep 6, 2010 7:17 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm surprised at how far this thread, and the whole Kevin Smith discussion has gone

It seems so unimportant in the scheme of things. Most of the time our arguments are about who to draft first, or who should start at QB or something rather important. Not who should be our backup RB. Don’t get me wrong, any roster spot is important, but it’s not a starting spot and I’m frankly bemused at how much discussion this topic has raised. Smith is talented enough to be a good change-of-pace back. That’s all there is to it as far as I’m concerned.

RIP Robyn Bailey 1961 - 2010. I love you mum.
