Coaches ranked 1-32

Yahoo has ranked all 32 coaches thought we should discuss this list.

http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news?slug=tsn-166944

How Jim Caldwell only 12th?

Pete Carroll who? what has he ever done and now he out ranks Jim Schwartz, Steve Spagnolo and Todd Haley!

How can they justify Schwartz as number 30 considering the offseason we have had.?

Mike Singletary is 21 yet some how behind Norv Turner, John Fox and Marvin Lewis?

Just a few questions I have about this list. Seems we were looked over again. Go ahead and disect the list I don't agree with alot of it myself. I would have liked to see some facts that justify the placement of the coaches.

Wow

I didn’t even bother clicking on the link after seeing where Schwartz was ranked and Carroll. That is just sad how these writers do not know what they are talking about. I wonder if they just get paid to watch the big shot names out there. That is just ridiculous.

I looked to see...

where Caldwell and Schwartz were on the list right off the bat and saw that they were 12th and 30th. That list lost all my respect at that point and didn’t deserve anymore of my attention.

It is pretty obvious to me, that this writter did two things

1) Failed to do the proper research to write an informed article
2) Judged the coaches based solely on wins and losses and sometimes gave credit for stuff so far in the past it is irrelevant

Schwartz has not done a damn thing yet

Remember that. He was not done Jack. I read this article and had no problem with his placement.

They look at the lions past record and automatically make him a bottom third player. Np, when the season kicks in and we start to show that growth we all expect, his number will go up.

Lions fans deserve better than being the laughing stock of the NFL. Lets all hope they are heading in the right direction finally.

Other than leaving USC

before the &#@!. hits the fan, what exactly has Pete Carroll done?

I could care less what coaches of other teams I could care less about are ranked

All i know, Schwartz has not shown anything yet. I fully expect and believe he will but until he does, a list like this is inconsequential.

Schwartz has done a lot already.

all this nonsense about the only way you can evaluate a team is by the number in the win column. it is just inane sports talk cliche and coachspeak. there is no doubt a quality of play in games, and enhancing the quality of talent that goes beyond just wins/losses. there is a big difference between getting thrashed at home by packers and losing by a field goal in overtime to Vikings.

Schwartz had a year. he pushed to take Stafford over everyone’s favorite OLB Aaron Curry or Jason Smith. taking Delmas, Levy. Taking Suh over Berry or McCoy this year. These were good choices. Carroll hasn’t coached a down.

It is quite clear that we are an improved team—due to the FO and Schwartz.

as far as coach rankings go though—that is probably just nonsense anyway.

all those aquisitions were mostly due to the FO

Sure The Schwartz has a say but Mayhew is the final guy and his decision over rules all. That said they are working on the same page so my comments are redundant.

Carroll being ranked higher than Schwartz is funny but nothing more. It just reinforces what I said. These ranking mean jack diddle.

The bottom line is that most coaches are measure in wins and losses
In 1994, Carroll was elevated to head coach of the Jets. Known for energy and youthful enthusiasm, Carroll painted a basketball court in the parking lot of the team’s practice facility where he and his assistant coaches regularly played three-on-three games during their spare time.14 The Jets got off to a 6–5 start under Carroll, but in week 12, he was the victim of Dan Marino’s “clock play”—a fake spike that became a Miami Dolphins game-winning touchdown. The Jets lost all of their remaining games to finish 6–10. He was fired after one season.1415

Carroll was hired for the next season by the San Francisco 49ers, where he served as defensive coordinator for the following two seasons (1995–96). His return to success as the defensive coordinator led to his hiring as the head coach of the New England Patriots in 1997, replacing coach Bill Parcells, who had resigned after disputes with the team’s ownership. His 1997 Patriots team won the AFC East division title, but his subsequent two teams did not fare as well—losing in the wild card playoff round in 1998, and missing the playoffs after a late-season slide in 1999—and he was fired after the 1999 season. Patriots owner Robert Kraft said firing Carroll was one of the toughest decisions he has had to make since buying the team, stating “A lot of things were going on that made it difficult for him to stay, some of which were out of his control. And it began with following a legend.”14 Before leaving for college football he coached with the Seattle Seahawks as cornerbacks coach. His combined NFL record as a head coach was 33–31, and he was later considered a much better fit for college football than the NFL after his success at USC.

Courtesy of wiki. Pete Carroll has proven a lot more in the NFL than Schwartz has, but it is all good, the Schwartz will earn his due soon enough.

Tomlin shouldn't be up that high

I don’t care how many Super Bowls he’s won, that team is slowly falling apart and nothing he’s done has made it any better.

coaches are graded by wins and losses bottom line. That is their sole job. I dont think that Schwartz had a chance to be anywhere near the middle to top of that list based on the team he was given. He is currently a victim of circumstances. But if the Lions hit the playoff mark in the next 2-3 years, he will top that list easily!!!!

by grimy0185 on Sep 6, 2010 8:57 PM EDT reply actions

nope

just not true. 7-9 means very different things to different teams this year. the quality of play means a lot too.

Coaches are measured by win column, division titles, playoff wins, and Lombardi Trophies, it is just the way it is.

I would not be too offended, Schwartz is one of the youngest coaches on that list, he will earn his due in time.

This list is garbage

It seems to me that they did not give the youth of coaches high marks on lack HEAD coaching experiance. I am ok on the Carroll rank due to his previous coaching in the NFL as well as his HEAD coaching in college.

I believe Schwartz and the other young head coaches will get there dues.

Still this ranking is way off mark IMHO
