I don't get it
guys, I need some help here. Because of the lions record they are in the second best position to add released players to there roster this week. We all agreed that Mayhew would use this last chance (assuming they will be better this year and in a lesser possition to add next year) to gain some roster depth. And what did we get Spencer Havner and Stephen Logan. Don't know too much about these guy and no doubt they may help, but this was not what I was expecting ?????? Young LB's like Carpenter and Grable all got gobbled up in a hurry. Housh gone quickly......I really thought the Lions would use this position to add depth? I just don't get it. Were these two guys the ONLY BEST Two available to add depth to the roster

it alot about picking up the playbook in time..
cant be like the sea hawak and pick up 20 new guys.. none of them would know the book
Well
If it were up to us, the Lions would have picked up about 20 new faces but at the end of the day, Mayhew did not have the mindset of letting go of some guys that he wanted to keep in order to get the big names out there.
My nickname for Mayhew is “low key” since he always seems to pick up the least likely of guys out there even in the draft mostly in the later rounds and for the most part, they always seem to be better then one thought….Havner saves us a roster spot since he can play so many different aspects in the game when it comes to special teams, TE, short yardage situations, goal-line, and linebacker.
With that move, we save a roster spot and an extra player. Logan on the other hand, Mayhew basically said “F*** it” and just grabbed a guy who is known for just returns instead of using Aaron Brown and/or Derrick Williams in that role.
I think Lions fans are really underestimating that signing of Logan but he should prove some wrong come week one.
I trust the front office for the first time since..I cannot really remember the last time since I’m only 20 years old but Mayhew’s way of thinking has brought in a positive attitude towards the entire organization whether that be the players or the fans, we’ll take it either way.
Everyone can agree whatever it is that he is doing is working and a mild improvement from year’s past (Millen).
Shoring up special teams
I think the Lions r putting final touches on thier special teams. Logan as a returner. Havner plays LB as well as special teams and TE. Also I believe that the rookie Willie Young can play LB as well as Lineman. I don’t think the Lions are as shallow at LB as some people think.
Well some of the guys didnt have to "clear waivers"
Some guys that have a certain amount of time in the league when they are cut they dont go to waivers, they instead become free agents, like Housh.

Your right
If they have four years of service your don’t have to clear waivers.

they did get Clayton from baltimore
so they added a solid reciver anyways
I had a dream were the Lions let me sign a 1 day contract they let me practice with them running drills and catching passes from Matt…At the end of the day I was called into Mayhews office. I was told I had just been traded to seattle for a 5th round draft pick.
Clayton, not Crayton

When his name goes on the waiver wire, every team in the NFL has the option to pick up the players original contract
That is why no one picked up Housh off waivers, his insane contract prevented it and then he became a free agent

Dont mix up when a player is release v. put on the waiver wire.

Kinda like having a guy that could play TE and LB
He adds serious depth being able to play both sides of the ball in a pinch..anyone remember peterman (I think it was) playing on the defensive line against the packers?

I'm completely ok with Logan...
He makes our return game 10x better. If the guys around him can do there job and open some holes, we’ll have one of the best return games in the NFC.
I am still scratching my head over Havner. It has to be a versatility thing. LB, TE, or FB. It’s like killing three birds with one stone.
well
you go to the green bay site and they were pretty pissed havner was cut. so that sais alot to me.
as where the steeler fans about logen... the corner i donno what to think yet
not mad at deal relly…
we got a 2nd round CB for a 7th round TE we would have cut (seem how denver wanted him he would not have maid it past wavers)
but i dont know if the player we got will work out.. sounds of things look bad so far
They don't look bad...
This kid was good in college, and he was a high pick. He played one year in Denver, which isn’t a particularly great place to play right now. He still has a pretty high ceiling.
he could turn out into something dont misunderstand me dont want this to turn in to KS 2.0
it just when you have a top 5 CB teaching you.. i speeks valumes to when you cant get over the hump..
i think he will end up starting at some point mostly b/c we suck at CB.. it just will he disapoint.. i have higher hopes for are waver guys

Kurt Warner, Johnny Unitas and Jack Kemp (sadly by the Lions) were all cut.

Warner was cut by Green Bay, Unitas by the Steelers, not sure about Kemp but it wasent the Lions

Wikipedia says cut by Lions
Drafted in the 17th round of `57 draft. Cut before the season started.
1 slice, 1 beer, 5 more reps.
Weird, I just watched an NFL network show on this, and actually had a post in a thread somewhere.

Ok I did some digging. ANd of the three of them yes Kemp was drafted and cut by the Lions, among others too
Following his college career, Warner went undrafted in the 1994 NFL Draft. He was invited to try out for the Green Bay Packers’ training camp in 1994, but was released before the regular season began
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kurt_Warner
John Constantine Unitas. . .Cut by 1955 Steelers, free agent with 1956 Colts, soon became legendary hero. .
http://www.profootballhof.com/hof/member.aspx?player_id=219
After being drafted by the Detroit Lions in the 17th round of the 1957 NFL Draft, Kemp was cut from the team before the 1957 NFL season began. He spent 1957 with the Pittsburgh Steelers and 1958 on the taxi squads of the San Francisco 49ers and New York Giants. The 1958 New York Giants played in that year’s NFL Championship Game, known as the “Greatest Game Ever Played” and the first overtime NFL playoff game, but, as a third-string quarterback member of the taxi squad, Kemp did not take the field.

Of the three of those guys I don’t regret cutting Kemp, though I am sure the Packers and Steelers regret their cuts.

I'm happy with who we got
Logan is a good returner and Hevner brings versatility.
RIP Robyn Bailey 1961 - 2010. I love you mum.
I'm pretty damn happy with the signings
We got a proven return man, something we didn’t have after we released Northcutt, and a very versatile guy that can play on either side of the ball and is a Special Teams beast in Havner. Havner is exactly the type of guy you want as your 53rd man.
Think about how many different positions he can potentially play if need be: Tight End, Fullback, all three Linebacker position’s… maybe even Defensive End in obvious passing situations? Okay, DE is probably a stretch.
Agree about the versatility, I cant help but to keep thinking of MIke Vrabel
It is so refreshing to see the Lions making moves that other successful teams have done. If the Lions turn into the NFC version of the Patriots I will be a very happy man.

close to the vest...
I get the feeling that Mayhew has seen more talent in the defensive backfield that he was willing to show in exhibition games. That just sounds like something Mayhew and Schwartz would do. Our games against Chicago and Philly should tell the tale.
