Promote Evilsmurf on POD.

I would like to see Evilsmurf to have a more active role on POD. His analysis is a huge benefit to the community and I personally have learned a great deal from him. He does his research and is very articulate. I think Pride of Detroit is a great site and allowing Evilsmurf to have more of an administrative role would only benefit POD.

So if Evil is cool with this, I'd love to see it.

Showin smurf some love well done!..The guy does his homework when it comes to stats and numbers I don’t question his post. I gotta say his Who is series the other day impressed me.

I had a dream were the Lions let me sign a 1 day contract they let me practice with them running drills and catching passes from Matt…At the end of the day I was called into Mayhews office. I was told I had just been traded to seattle for a 5th round draft pick.

I surely look for his stuff, that’s for sure.

Like I’ve said, I’m not into the national azzholes at all and actually there’s very few “professional writers” that I pay attention to. Deeply involved amateurs are much more interesting and Smurf is a good one.

I dont post comments on here a lot but I do read the POD everyday and I’ve come to respect Evil a lot. I always take the time to read his postings because he always has done plenty of research so I know he isn’t just talking shit. I usually just voice my opinions but he definitely does his homework. I’d love to see more from the guy.

Great job on the props for Evil, I agree. We have plenty of great people on POD as well. I check out other teams when it looks like we may have a trade or after a trade to see what the other team thinks of the player. IMHO we have the best group of fan on POD ! To many great minds and fans to list on POD, thank you everyone for making this such a great sight !!!

I also praise Smurf, his insight is almost second to none when it comes to doing research and not just blabbering his mouth about something he believes in. He always has something to back it up and I’ve learned a lot from him just in the past few days then most on here previously.

Great job and hope to see his contributions pay off.

I remember

he was a main candidate for the “user writer” thing that seemed to never materialize. If I remember correctly, Sean said he needed to improve his grammar and spelling.

And as much as I love the Smurfster, he’s got a point. Proper grammar, spelling and punctuation is the only thing the Smurfologist needs to become the next Tom Kowalski. Besides that the guy is a champion, we should find a way to get his face on a box of Wheaties. Who’s with me?

by motown313 on Sep 6, 2010 11:04 PM EDT reply actions

I did not know that..

but spelling and grammar can be fixed with the automated red line. Why not promote a spell checker as well to make sure everything is ready to be published. Plus, his wording is very easy and clear to understand so it’s not like its bad or un-readable. I don’t see a big problem with it. \

Hey Motown, that was me, not Sean.

When this came up the first time and everyone was calling on smurf to get involved, I did make some comments. I hope those comments were not meant as an insult or any disrespect to him. I very much like reading his insightful analysis work and I offered some "constructive criticism". I think my point was (to be on the front page) Sean would need him to step up his game and provide a professional write-up without mistakes.

Smurf responded to what I said, and he agreed that he needed to work on grammar and spelling. From what I remember he was cool with my comments.

I have a couple of cousins that do something with the Lions, take pictures or do camera work or something, but I don’t talk to them very often. Who said....oh wait a minute....

I still have all of my ribs…LOL!

I definitely can appreciate a lot of what E-smurf does here…but sometimes my opinion of certain things and his opinion clash. IE Jason Hanson and Drew Stanton (no need to say I told you so). A good majority of the time, especially when the topic is fact, based on solid research and statistics, I think E-Smurf does an excellent job writing here. It is just those “bubble” topics and controversial topics where him and I do not necessarily see eye to eye. The major difference between E-Smurf and guys that I truly can not stand on any level (like Rbanner and Ralphie boy blue), is that E-Smurf is obviously intelligent and articulate, regardless of whether or not I agree or disagree with his opinions.

A perfect example of another person on this blog that I like a lot, but also disagree with a lot, is Drewslions. Drew and I have banged heads on multiple occasions, as a lot of you know…EPIC BATTLE! However, in the end it is the same thing I said before…the great realization that we are on the same side comes through and stops me from going ballistic. If E-Smurf were a blithering idiot, which clearly he is not, then my level of tolerance, in regard to his opinions, would be far lower than they currently are, and as such it would be clearly evident that I do not like him. Instead, he is a smart guy who does his homework and can generally produce links to his research. Therefore, after my initial reaction I say “hey, we are on the same side” and then I can let it go much more easily than if his opinions were abject stupidity being spewed forth out of nowhere.

In conclusion, I like E-Smurf (whether or not he likes me may be a different story) and look forward to reading his posts and having friendly debates with him.

Disclaimer: Understand that I am a very passionate person when it comes to all things Detroit Lions. I am a man of honor and loyalty. If I disagree with your opinions, I may very well come across as a real A-hole, but I ask that you read my posts and replies as if they were coming from your own brother (or a friend that you know well). In that manner, you will most definitely have a better chance of hearing the true context behind my words. Often it is very difficult to “hear” what is being said when you are reading text. It is all to easy to take type written words out of context.

GO LIONS!

Oh you didn't know?? You're ass better CALLLLLLLL SOMEBODY!!!!!

by KDawg on Sep 7, 2010 4:38 PM EDT up reply actions

The difference between you and I debating...

and you and anyone else debating, is that I am always right… lol. I’m sure that’s frustrating for you… :o)

There are lots of intelligent posters here on POD and contrary to popular opinion, all the stuff that we (as in, not Sean) post that is not news (which is about 90% of it) is conjecture… pure and simple. As long as it is well-written, grammatically clean (for a blog, anyway) and concise, it doesn’t really matter what you post as long as you back up your claims with debateable substance.

Not that I disagree with you completely yet again KDawg, but Smurf’s opinion posts are just that… opinion. If he thinks Stanton will get cut, that’s fine. If he can back the statement with good, logical reasoning, regardless if he’s in the minority on that subject, it’s post-worthy. And in all honesty, that’s what this site is about… starting conversation. If he can get those opinions across in a way that’s interesting and worthy of reading, more power to him.

I’m not one for actively petitioning for someone to be an author, so I’ll leave that decision to Sean. I think this fanpost was well-intentioned, but probably created some hard feelings for people who have been here a long time and have contributed more to the site overall and have not really been recognized (not directed at you, KDawg… unless you have hard feelings… then I am directing at you… lol). There are many talented and intelligent posters at POD, but some do not have the time to post as frequently. Smurf obviously has the time… lol.

by DrewsLions on Sep 7, 2010 8:17 PM EDT up reply actions

Nope

No hard feelings here. I agree about opinion being post worthy and all that jazz too, but I was just saying that I am one who does not always agree with such said opinions. It is only natural.

Oh you didn't know?? You're ass better CALLLLLLLL SOMEBODY!!!!!

by KDawg on Sep 7, 2010 8:42 PM EDT up reply actions

I have no hard feelings towards anyone here myself

The guys that tend to spout off without any backing in facts I usually find more comical than annoying.

When it comes to the bubble topics I have a process that is a bit uncharacteristic for most people. I go in an a whim and keep an open mind learning as I go. As much as people have learned from me on this site, I have also learned from others, and many times I am just passing along the torch.

A perfect example of this is the Hanson debate. I think I tend to strike nerves with my writing and honestly that is intended. I also am a very emotional guy, very passionate about my beliefs, and I will fight very hard for them. However I was the first to jump on an apologist post after Hauschka came back down to earth here in Detroit. So while I may start out on one side of the fence I have no problems following logic instead of heart and jumping over that fence.

You will see a pattern with me over time like that. I tend to play devil’s advocate at times and I intentionally try to start healthy debate, not flame wars though. But I want people reading my stuff to be emotionally invested into it. I want people to be as vested and engaged emotionally as I am about the Lions, however I almost never take anything personal.

The only time I would take anything personal is if it was a direct attack on me, you know something about my personal life, calling my lady a name or something like that. Anyone who has a brain and writes realizes that they are in the entertainment business and will always be subject to critics. Taking those knocks can sometimes be helpful and sometimes be useless so I take it all with a quarry of salt. To me the real important thing is to keep my passion going and continue what I am doing, to keep pursing that dream.

well said and 100% true Dawg

You are very transparent, and a man of honor and loyalty. Although we have never met, my gut tells me that you epitomize the spirit of what pride represents.

Your point about agreeing with others opinion is important. I don’t think that most of us jumped on the Smurf bandwagon because we thing he is the Svengali of Pigsking wisdom. In fact, I think I probably say to myself “where the hell is he pulling this BS from” at least daily when reading Smurfy’s pearls. (Note: I say this on every article written by McCosky from the News. Does he even watch football?)

My “opinion” is that the SmurfFans here are most appreciative of his overall effort, and time that he dedicates to everything he does here at POD. Whether he is writing an article or responding to a post, Smurf always seems to give you more than you paid for :-). I, for one, pretty much spew whatever is on my mind here at POD…no research needed. Not smurf though…he researches, digs, cross-checks, and then writes a 300 page dissertation for us to digest….and that’s just replying to a post where someone asked who is starting at left tackle this week. lol.

Dawg, Drew, and all else…you are all right. Lots of great writers here at POD and it’s what makes it great. Props to all, and thanks for making this a fun place to chill.

Lol…. had to do it, guys. I just find it funny to see the two of you agree on anything…

LOL

Maybe that fight to the death won’t have to happen

I had a dream were the Lions let me sign a 1 day contract they let me practice with them running drills and catching passes from Matt…At the end of the day I was called into Mayhews office. I was told I had just been traded to seattle for a 5th round draft pick.

CLF and I have been on good terms for quite awhile now...

We had an argument awhile back, but once again it happens.

For this year and a halfer at the POD

I still love REV and Bishop the most, Dr. Drew your up there on the list as well, but these guys are right Evil does put a lot of time into his points and I give you MAD props for doing it even if I don’t always agree with you. And ah Drew, yeah I’m still eating crow over Staffinfection as the best player in last years draft!

I see nothing wrong in stating an opinion.............

It usually opens the thread up to for intelligent debate of opposing views. I enjoy reading some of those point / counter-point threads I find myself “saying he’s right” and then saying dang he’s right too.

When all is said and by the end of the thread I have varying facts and other useful information to draw from to garner my own opinion.

I thought being lazy was a bad thing, So I gave up thinking.

I didn't mean "Don't ever state your opinion"

I was just saying that I prefer fact based statements and arguments over conjecture, even though (as aptly pointed out by Drew) about 90% of everything posted here is conjecture. There would be nothing to read here if nobody posted their opinions. I was just stating the facts from my POV…I have not read too many opinions by E-Smurf that left me thinking “That was spot on”. Nothing more, nothing less.

Lots of love for Smurfy here

Congrats. I enjoy your writing, even if it does seem to take seemingly minutes out of my net time getting through it. If Sean decided to add another writer to the site in you then I wouldn’t object in the slightest. You’re definitely one of the most active Pridemembers, especially in quantity.

RIP Robyn Bailey 1961 - 2010. I love you mum.

Smurf Knows His Stuff

We have an awesome group of well informed, knowledgeable footbal fans here, and since Smurf showed up, I think we have learned even more thanks to his rock solid contributions. I really appreciate all of the time and effort you have put forth to make this an even better site, Smurf. I must say that you and Northleft12 are my two favorite contributers to this site. Not to take anything away from anyone else here, because there are just too many good posters here to mention. It’s pretty cool to see so much love given to someone who obviously deserves it. Kudos man, and keep up the good work.

With each note of Smurfy praise, I can just see Kdawg....

with his eyes burning red and nashing his teeth behind the glare of his computer screen saying:
.

…but his opinions are almost always wrong….just a baseless crock of crap…these people are so stupid….he doesn’t even use spellcheck…Uurgh!!

to which Smurf replies in his Rainman voice, “but I am an excellent driver”.

I love you both, but this string is now bordering on hilarious! If it’s any consolation Dawg, I did rank you as POD’s #1 wiseguy in my inaugural rankings last December!
