Lions Notes: DeAndre Levy Misses Monday's Practice

  • Lions players are off today, but they practiced on Monday in order to start preparing for the season opener against the Bears on Sunday. Louis Delmas was at practice, but unfortunately he was not joined by DeAndre Levy.
"Hopefully (I can play)," Levy said. "It's hard to say right now. Right now I feel pretty good but it's a big difference between feeling good now and feeling good out there (on the field.)," he said. "I'm just trying to see by the end of the week. I don't know exactly what the cutoff would be."
If Levy is unable to play, it looks like Landon Johnson is the favorite to replace him in the starting lineup.
  • Some Lions players have changed their number:

    18 Tim Toone
    25 Randy Phillips
    29 John Wendling
    32 Aaron Berry
  • Spencer Havner was claimed by the Seahawks and Titans along with the Lions. Seattle has claimed a few guys that were awarded to Detroit. I'm sure that has to be getting annoying.
  • The announcers for the Lions-Bears game will be Thom Brennaman and Brian Billick. Charissa Thompson (woo hoo!) will be on the sideline.
  • Clark Judge of CBSSports.com thinks Matthew Stafford is ready to break out. He also likes what he sees in Jahvid Best.
  • Stafford and Best are both on the 2010 All-Mancrush team.
  • Cliff Avril updated his blog, sharing his thoughts on the D-line, training camp and the Bears game.

Hope Levy is healthy

While I think the line will do it’s job the LBs are going to need to make some tackles and not having Levy is going to hurt.

by SaginawGuy on Sep 7, 2010 12:33 PM EDT reply actions

While having Levy injured is dangerous I think that is one position we can linger on

because of the strength of the D line. None of the LBs I watched this preseason, while the 1s were out there, looked dynamic and honestly I think that was because of the Dline.

They did their job putting pressure on most of the time and on running plays more often than not were sucking up blocks and even taking a tackle here or there.

Lions fans deserve better than being the laughing stock of the NFL. Lets all hope they are heading in the right direction finally.

Peterson did stand out on a couple of plays but nothing special

I also liked Landon Johnson and Caleb Campbell. But hey maybe I am partial to line backers who actually can make a read and tackle :)

I am not trying to be a downer but here is ProFootballFocus' ratings of the D Lines.

Link: http://www.profootballfocus.com/blog/2010/09/05/ranking-the-defensive-fronts-part-1-the-lowly-12/

They ranked Detroit twenty-third [23rd] in the NFL. Ahead of [from 24th down] Carolina, Bears, Texans, Tampa, Saints, Bengals, Bills, Chargers and Chiefs.

They are very unimpressed by KVB, they think he is over the hill, but quite high on Corey, Suh and Avril. There is no real methodology behind this ranking, it seems like a lot of gut feel. Just like any of the other rankings where Detroit players and units come in low, it is based on the recent history which is……..well….it is what it was.
Only a good 2010 performance will wash that stain out.

by NorthLeft12 on Sep 7, 2010 7:16 PM EDT up reply actions

I wouldn't read too much into that

Like any other person or place that does predictions, they usually are pretty wrong in a lot of places.

Don't worry, I don't. Predictions are cheap.

Find it odd that they are pretty upbeat on three of the four guys, then rate the line so low. I think, like a lot of experts/gurus they are taking a wait and see attitude.

Same for the rankings of Mayhew and Schwartz, until they deliver some wins and demonstrate a high level of play, the Lions will continually be rated low.

Have to prove it on the field.

Delmas will play thats great news.

Levy, i hope like hell he is ready sunday and healthy to perform at a impact level.
Like the knew numbers compared to what they were, Berry #32 and Phillips #25 looks great.

Can we stop talking about releasing Smitty and Hanson now....

by SmittyJ on Sep 7, 2010 1:15 PM EDT reply actions

So with Berry taking #32,

Is that a sign the Lions have no plans to bring back Bly after the first week. hmmmm

Lets hope so, he really didn't do much in PS.

This is starting to make me nervous

I haven’t been too concerned about Levy’s injury situation, but we’re five days away from the season opener. I like LJ, but damn, we need to get Levy out there. We’re thin enough at Linebacker as it is.

by motown313 on Sep 7, 2010 2:51 PM EDT reply actions

I think they should take it slowly with him.

If the training staff doesn’t think he is healthy enough to give it a go don’t let him talk his way onto the field. We need him for the long haul.

by SaginawGuy on Sep 7, 2010 2:55 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree.

If hes not ready Johnson and palmer can fill in for him this week. Just dont rush it.

by BennieBladesFan on Sep 7, 2010 4:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Not saying we should rush him

all I’m saying is that he’s important, and any time he misses a game it’s not good. I really, REALLY want to beat the Bears in the opener, and Levy not playing hurts our chances. That’s all.

I am not saying everything is great ..

But I swear we here stress more than Schwartz or Mayhew :)

As Schwartz put it, Our LB and DB’s aren’t great .. But he isn’t concerned as much as others seem to be …

So translation ?

He knows what assignments were given .. what was expected .. and what was achieved .. We expect every player to become a pro bowler ..lolll :)

Plus .. they are thinking long term .. we are too excited and want yo make the playoffs this year … they say we want to win “now” .. but thats just to feed us bs .. They want to progress and build a factory .. that develops players year in and year out ..

No short term fixes like Bly or Jansen .. Young talent .. that we invest in .. EVERY YEAR .. and by the time this crop matures in a couple of years, we will have new talent coming in that takes a couple of years to mature … and so on ..

With this philosophy, in the future, we can make a playoff run every year …

No Band Aid’s .. and no fixing everything right away .. that’s not quality .. just stop gap measures …

it’s an assembly line …. and will take time .. Just marvel at the process .. All the lions are aiming for is consistent improvement … and the wins will add up soon ..

Now I have to redo my Bly jersey to say Berry…..

…. Screw you BLY!!!!!!

by CLF on Sep 7, 2010 4:16 PM EDT reply actions

U gotta admit.

If the Lions cut Bly, they must be satisfied that the secondary can hold it’s own.

by ColtsFanatic on Sep 7, 2010 4:38 PM EDT reply actions

I agree

The secondary is a work in progress and the FO knows it. They are hoping one or two of the players they are going to throw into the fire this year develops into a stud. Bly, while slow, was still the best ball hawk they had on the field and that can not be undervalued.

All the quotes coming out of Allen park talk now are about winning games but if they really wanted to do that, they would have kept more veterans like Bly and Jansen.

The FO does not want to say it but they are comfortable with their jobs and as such they can take those “fliers” on unproven talent hoping for a couple of players to stand out. The LBs other than Peterson and the whole secondary outside of Delmas are all basically rookies with few exceptions. ALL, yes i said ALL, of them are unproven.

This is a luxury the FO and coaching staff have not been afforded in a very long time. It is a great thing for them because it is the right way to develop players but as fans we will suffer more now with hopes some of those developmental players step up and perform later.

This team has 4-6 wins written all over it and 6 is really pressing the bubble of reality.

Lions fans deserve better than being the laughing stock of the NFL. Lets all hope they are heading in the right direction finally.

by joshsun on Sep 7, 2010 6:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Huge and Van Ochten made a good point today on MLive about cutting veterans

They’re playing for the playoffs in 2011. That’s their plan. For Bly and Janson this was probably their last year. The Lions need to know what they have, so they can draft a franchise tackle or corner next year. 1 year plans almost never work in the NFL. Three year plans have much more success, excepting Milleniumidiot. 7-9 this year, entertaining and exciting this year, playoff contention next year, unless some unknown quantity steps up in the defensife backfield or LB steps up and makes an impact. Which I am hoping for.

by dylan415 on Sep 7, 2010 7:49 PM EDT up reply actions

Surely!

Secondary a work in progress yes. Secondary better off without Bly…priceless.

Side Note

On that CBS article where they quoted Quentin Jammer talking about Malcom Floyd, he mentioned Calvin in some pretty good company. Of course we all know it here, but it’s always good to see the guy getting a little notice.

…“a big guy who goes up and gets the ball,” said teammate Quentin Jammer, “I don’t think there’s anybody other than Randy Moss and Larry Fitzgerald who can do what he does, which is adjust to the football.” I don’t know, but I might throw Calvin Johnson in that roll call, too, but you get the idea.

CHARISSA THOMPSON...GIGGITY GIGGITY GOO!

Just wondering if your on the practice squad who cares what number you wear? Then again in Toone or Berry get called up to the 53 the have that number reserved.

Cliff Avril is the man I got to meet him, Louis and Corey. Those guys were great I wish the best for all of them. I think this is Avrils breakout season though..DPOY maybe not but he could be one of the most productive lineman in the nfl.

I had a dream were the Lions let me sign a 1 day contract they let me practice with them running drills and catching passes from Matt…At the end of the day I was called into Mayhews office. I was told I had just been traded to seattle for a 5th round draft pick.

by The Profiler on Sep 7, 2010 5:22 PM EDT reply actions

Like I said...Avril's blog was a very good read.

I agree wholeheartedly! Avril, Suh, Williams and VDB as the D line for the Lions this year! Avril is going to feed off of those 3. Avril said they could be the #1 d line this year. I could see that happening.

by ColtsFanatic on Sep 7, 2010 5:31 PM EDT up reply actions

Berry

Is already on the 53 roster tho i guess it makes sense to know
what number he’s wearing lol

by rom3o on Sep 7, 2010 6:29 PM EDT up reply actions

Funny...

If Levy isn’t in the lineup the first week I doubt it would make much of a difference with all the changes to the Lions D. I doubt “dah Bears” were planning thier offensive strategy “soley” around avoiding Levy. Levy coming back a few weeks into the season may not be a bad thing. Another equasion for the opposion to figure out when he does come back.

by ColtsFanatic on Sep 7, 2010 6:44 PM EDT reply actions

He is important.

The defense played a lot better with him at MLB then Foote. However if he isnt ready dont rush him.

by BennieBladesFan on Sep 7, 2010 9:48 PM EDT up reply actions

Friendly visit

What do you believe is the Lions’ biggest weakeness and strength heading into Sunday’s game? Why?

Bears strength- front seven on D. (Peppers, a rejuvenated Harris, a healthy Urlacher/Tino, and Briggs).

Bears weakness- pass-blocking your much improved D-line. (I’m a little worried about Williams’ inconsistencies at LT, and run blocking on the left side).

Thanks for the visit

Weakness, Secondary. Nuff said.

Strengths – dline, oline, rb, wr and te.

Our secondary is filled with extremely young and unproven players and scares the hell out of me. That said, we are hopeful the massive improvement on the Dline will help to protect against that weakness to some extent.

Our Oline has been nothing short of a refreshing surprise so far. A healthy Peterman and the addition of Sims has truly solidified this line. They have effectively created a pocket for Stafford to pass from and the extra time has improved his play dramatically. Add in increased depth to the WR, TE and Rb positions and you have the potential of an explosive offense.

As a Lions fan, I am looking at a game that we can win. That is saying a lot these last few years. Lets hope for a great game and no injuries.

I haven't heard a lot about the O-line

If they have a good game, the Bears may be in trouble. The same can be said of ours I suppose.

I forgot to add Johnny Knox as a strength. No matter the outcome, I see him doing well versus one of the weaknesses you listed.

Does Levy’s possible absence in the middle effect the group’s ability to stop the run or the pass more?

Thanks for the info.

Knox Rox

You got that right, Johnny Knox is a nice strength of the team. His speed will be of extra value in dancing around our weak secondary. Then again, y’all have some good receivers in general. The biggest concern is will Cutler have enough time to make intelligent throws.

The absence of Levy would definitely affect the middle. He’s heads up vs the pass and very aware of holes to fill vs the run. I won’t pick which will be of larger impact especially since we’re not sure who would be filling in for him. One thing is it could very well mean drawing a safety in and hurt coverages.

and thank you for the info.

ohhh!

I just thought of another weakness you should list for the Bears. You cut my boy LeFevour! wtf!!! ya ya he wasn’t going to even remotely be a factor for a while but the kid has potential. Now we have to watch the Bungles mess him up :(

by Ee Oulo on Sep 7, 2010 9:53 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah

A lot of us over at WCG were disappointed by him being cut, but at least they were intending to sign him to the practice squad. Unfortunately, the Bungles over-valued him and reserved him a spot on their roster. After his awful preseason performance, I couldn’t imagine any team taking a flyer on him.

Biggest weakness...The Lions offense.

Biggest strength…the Lions D Line. The Lions D line is as stacked as it could be at this point. If I were “dah Bears” I would worry about the “D Line”. Biggest weakness… Youth. The Lions r young. But very talented. All the arrows r pointing up for the Lions!
