Hey NFL... I got an Idea.
How about instead of messing up the game, and the way penalties are called, and how the ball is spotted.
Just hire younger, more athletic Officials.
I find it hard to believe that the NFL needs Officials who are all old, and on steroids like Ed Hochuli. If you don't believe me just look at the majority of NFL refs in week one. These guys are juicing more than Tiger Woods.
If the NFL wants to protect the Referee, Put a Helmet on his Ass...
There is no need to move the Ref, to the other side of the ball. This is the equivalent of moving the Umpire in Baseball behind the Mound to call Balls and Strikes.
I'm not gonna say that I like when opposing teams run pass routes and use the REF as a Screen. But this problem could be solved with different/better REFs as opposed to changes in the rules or shifts in where they line up before the snap.

j, A few officials have been injured by getting mixed up in the play at the old spot.
This is being presented as a safety issue for the officials, so I think it is tough to argue against it. A helmet, whether on his ass or his head, will not help his knees or the rest of his body when he gets flattened.
Actually your analogy is exactly backwards. At one time umpires did call balls and strikes from behind the mound. They moved him out of the play and behind the plate. That is exactly what the NFL is doing now, they are moving the official from the play to a point on the field where he is unlikely to interfere in the play.
Some interesting things
This has been in the works for 10 years, tested in a couple preseasons, and also NFL Europe. Personally I am all right with it. Screw Peyton Manning and his whining about not being able to hurry up offense everyone to death. 31 teams are dealing with it just fine and 1 freaking guy on one team has an issue and it is suddenly not a good idea? Oh boohoo that they lose the unfair advantage they were exploiting to prevent defensive substitutions into the game. They are not winning on talent, or skill, they are winning on exploiting. Though that is smart I think they take it beyond the spirit of the game and are little better than the Patriots taping practices. It is intended for both sides of the ball to be able to substitute and for both sides of the ball to be ready to compete prior to the snap.
On a side note Goodell said in his meeting with the Saints fans that a couple women officials are on their way up. I sure hope they are nice on the eyes. :)

we can hope

Hey that's a timeout, I can play right? yeah, get me--get the F-- Help me up...I can throw the ball if you need me to throw the ball...

I had a dream were the Lions let me sign a 1 day contract they let me practice with them running drills and catching passes from Matt…At the end of the day I was called into Mayhews office. I was told I had just been traded to seattle for a 5th round draft pick.
Nice
That’s something to look forward to.

HOLY HOTTNESS!!
forget the Lions getting cheerleaders. . .if the refs look like that, we don’t need cheerleaders
Its easy to "say" hire younger more athletic
But to actually find those guys could be harder than you think. First off if you want to ref in the NFL, you better me really f#@king good at it. How do you get good at being a ref? Experience. You can not just read a rules book and walk out there and just do it. Another thing to think about, NLF players are big. No, they are freaking huge. I don’t care who you put out there, standing there w/o pads on in the middle of the action is detrimental to your health. And they’re in the damn way too.

Agreed.
Next we will want to know a ref’s “Triangle” numbers and how fast he can run through the cones and tires.
You might have a good idea

Might be a more accurate call
How about this idea?
(Slightly OT)
The NFL should determine the size of a teams practice squad based on draft order. If your draft order is 1-10 your practice squad size can have a maximum of 12 players. Draft position 11-20, PS size max 10, etc.
The point is to be competitive the Rams need to develop more players than the Saints. The draft order is determined by wins and loses why not the number of players allowed on a teams PS?

That would probably cause a lot of difficulty with not much benefit
Constantly changing the number of guys you’re allowed to practice with from one season to the next would probably cause a lot of headaches.
Most practice squad guys don’t really become long-term contributors to turning teams around, anyway, so I don’t know that adding four extra spots to the bottom of the practice squad would help a bad team in any discernible way. The best players on the practice squad—the guys (like Zach Follett last year) most likely to become regular roster guys—are going to make the practice squad either way, whether ist 8 or 12 guys.
They should increase the size of the p.s. for everybody, or not.

I would like to see some younger refs
A lot of them do seem to be fairly aged.

Referees
They really need to get younger officials because most of them are old and seem to be struggling with the rule changes.
