Lions Notes: Detroit Wants To Bring Back Bobby Carpenter, Turk McBride

  • Martin Mayhew and Lions scouts are getting ready to head down to Orlando for the East-West Shrine Game. The game will be held next Saturday at 4 p.m. and can be seen on NFL Network.
  • Nate Burleson has little doubt there will be a lockout.
  • Bobby Carpenter said that his agent heard from the Lions and the team wants to bring him back. Carpenter would be willing to sign an extension, and he thinks he can compete for a starting job with the Lions next season.
  • The Lions also want to bring back Turk McBride.
  • The top ten of Mel Kiper's updated draft board is as follows: Auburn defensive tackle Nick Fairley, Clemson defensive end Da'Quan Bowers, Georgia wide receiver A.J. Green, LSU cornerback Patrick Peterson, Alabama defensive end Marcell Dareus, Nebraska cornerback Prince Amukamara, North Carolina defensive end Robert Quinn, Missouri quarterback Blaine Gabbert, Texas A&M linebacker Von Miler and Purdue defensive end Ryan Kerrigan. After Peterson and Amukamara, not a single cornerback is in Kiper's top 25.
  • The Lions' strength coaches are holding a clinic on March 5, and 100 people can sign up to attend it (for a price of $90).
  • I have no clue who this person is on Pride of Detroit, but someone with the picks set name of JustWinBaby won the POD Bowl Pick'em.

OL

does this mean there will be a plethora of lineman to choose from? I hope so with some upgrade on the O-line and LB Lions are going to kick some ass on their way to the playoffs

Barring something unforeseen or the FO developing a man-crush on a guy like Julio Jones or Akeem Ayers, I really think the Lions will trade back.

Also, while I’m not really a proponent of it, Cleveland would be a good team to swap with if Detroit wanted to move UP in the draft. They want a playmaker on offense and they pick too late for Green and too early for Jones.

by AJSmitty on Jan 15, 2011 1:50 PM EST reply actions

Even if we trade back.

A lock of mocks have Ayers going later too.

ayers had one good season

sounds like a lazy player, kinda of like players playing in a contract year

by Rob fisher on Jan 18, 2011 11:01 AM EST up reply actions

Err.

None of his seasons were that much better than his other ones, with his more recent seasons being better than his earlier ones.

Sounds like a person growing as a player.

So was Cliff Avril.

Don’t buy into the idea Ayers can’t play in a 4-3 scheme.

For those of you with a good memory, Kiper's Big Board does not equal how the players are drafted.

I have no doubt that the Lions Board will be a lot different than Kiper’s.

As far as trading down, if Jones is available at # 13, Cleveland may still be a good option to trade with. Although any trade with them would mean no first round pick this year. Maybe their second this year and possibly their first next year?

Trading back with the Rams or the Chiefs for Jones might also work.

by NorthLeft12 on Jan 15, 2011 2:11 PM EST reply actions

I hear that!

In fact I think that since Kiper has both CB rated so highly is almost a guarantee one of them will drop to us!!

They say some people never go crazy.... what a boring life that must be!!

by Ee Oulo on Jan 15, 2011 10:21 PM EST up reply actions

Amen

Even the best mock drafters only get maybe the first 3-4 picks 100% right a week before the draft. This far out, a mock draft means less than nothing. If we’d taken Kiper’s mock draft at face value this time last year, we’d all be lamenting the play of Gerald McCoy right about now.

by Trysdor on Jan 16, 2011 11:12 AM EST up reply actions

Continue the disinformation.

Go to the Tampa Bay SB site and ask them how McCoy played for them. He had a pretty good year and was really stepping up his production when he got injured.

Mel Kiper is a joke

How is he still a professional at this? If Nate is right does that mean I am doomed to read Mock Drafts until 2012?

The players are buying in and we have a bright future- (The Pain Train) Zack Follett.

by The Profiler on Jan 15, 2011 2:50 PM EST reply actions

Probably

But they can still hold the draft even if there isn’t a new CBA in place. They just can’t sign the picks.

by vanman on Jan 16, 2011 9:09 AM EST up reply actions

Good to hear about Bobby

He had 18 tackles in the 2 starts agianst Miami and Minny. He is the perfect guy to play the WIL. Good tackler. And good in coverage.

Carp can compete for the #1 spot

At least be able to allow the coaches a heavy rotation at the position to keep players physically and mentally fresh. I would like a 5th year vet FA brought in to stake a claim to the spot someone like James Anderson (CAR) . And I also want Chad Greenway (MIN) taking Julians spot with Palmer in rotation the MLB rotation could consist with Caleb Campbell and Eke—whatchamacullitt in the rotation along with aversatile rookie like Bruce Carter to be bounced between all positions where Gunny could dial-up a few game changing plays for the rookie.

My mock has changed considerably. Based on a hunch.

My scenerio Jacksonville calls up their old buddy Shack Harris and has him persuade Mayhew to trade back in the deal Mayhew gets Jacksonvilles 2nd round pick and sends the Lions 3rd rnd pick to the Jaguars.. Jacksonville selects Cam Newton at the 13th spot. Mayhew surprises all the pundants with his #16 pick.

RND 1 Nate Solder 6’ 8" 315 lb LOT Colorado
RND 2 Jonathan Baldwin 6’ 5" 225 lb WR Pittsburgh
RND 2 Bruce Carter 6’ 3" 230 lb OLB North Carolina

Defensive depth with the following picks.

I thought being lazy was a bad thing, So I gave up thinking.

by Wayne Fontes on Jan 16, 2011 1:41 PM EST up reply actions

I gotta be honest

I would cry in the corner if I see saw that draft. Not a fan of OT in the first round…I think it was one of the “common sense” exclusions that Mayhew was talking about for Lions BPA draft strategy for pick #13.
But it’s your right and I won’t bash too much. You think Bruce Carter is a later 2nd round pick? I think he’s late 1-early 2. But either way, good outside-the-box thinking at least IMO. I’m on the BPA LB/CB pick side of things.
BC can surely have an opportunity to start, and if he’s dynamite than yeah, I would eat my words. But I don’t think he will be and I imagine a scenario much like Follett’s for BC — play lights out in preseason and OTAs but get exposed in reg. season. I definitely want BC and Palmer rotating regularly during games, just not starting unless of injury.

by JFisch on Jan 16, 2011 3:45 PM EST up reply actions

A player who will take over at LT in a year or two. And a playmaking WR

completed the offensive roster. A power running back was a FA. so while offensive picks with the #1 and #2 seemed baffling it did complete one side of the ball. the final picks went to defense a side of the ball that needs competion in the back 7

I thought being lazy was a bad thing, So I gave up thinking.

by Wayne Fontes on Jan 17, 2011 4:09 PM EST up reply actions

I agree with JFisch. An OT in the first round?

I don’t disagree with the long term value of this pick, if Fox does not develop into a solid Left Tackle, but short term this does nothing for the Lions. From what I know about the guy, not much, he is strictly a Left Tackle prospect. If the Lions take an OT in the first round, I will assume that they don’t like what they have seen from Jason Fox, and don’t think he will cut it in the NFL. I think it is too early to make that judgement.

Baldwin might be the best value at # 44 so I would not be completely shocked if he was taken by the Lions there. We do need a reliable #3 WR. Baldwin seems to be on the slow side and is not the vertical threat that the Lions seem to covet. He does have great size and would be another great red zone option with Calvin and Grew.

I also like Bruce Carter. If he recovers from his injury really well he could be the steal of the second round. He would be a great fit into our defence. Another play maker.

Seems like we're pretty content to keep the DL from last year intact

As long as they can resign Cliff I’ll be happy. I imagine DeVries is gone in one way or another with Willie Young and Fluellen as bubble guys.

If we can come away from the draft+free agency with 3 new starters on D, and some solid OL and secondary depth I will be happy.

by WestsideLionsFan on Jan 15, 2011 3:54 PM EST reply actions

I'd like to see us resign Bobby and Turk

They deserve it considering their play this season.

Bobby "Boucher" Carpenter

I like that he wants to comeback and that Detroit wants him back, it puts some issues to rest like us needing 2 LB’ers. I still would love for Detroit to make a trade happen w/ Seattle for a swap of picks and Lofa, but we’ll see what happens in OTA’s. As for Turk “The Jerk” McBride i also like the ideal of him returning, i think if Detroit can sign Avril, Houston, Bobby and Turk quick and easy it will help send a message to the league that Detroit is the new hot bed.

Justin Houston declared for the draft today

a 3-4 backer from Georgia. Should have an impact in the 1st round.

Just a thought for LB

Casey Matthews out of Oregon. I keep seeing him placed in the 3rd round. Can’t hurt to have a Matthews at LB can it? Definitely need LB to be addressed early on.

who's the moron

Who in the hell thinks that we need to draft a WR with any of out top draft picks? Are you stupid, I think it is safe to say that our WR’s are an actual strong point on our team. Yes we need a third WR at some point, but hello, we need a couple 1st CB’s and a couple 1st LB’s. Get out of the the wanna have playmakers on offense, we have them. We just need a couple solid players on defense to get this done

by rip216 on Jan 17, 2011 8:05 AM EST reply actions

LB's , CB . RB will be adressed in FA so another WR in the 2nd a high pick for a potential playmaker.

the team needs a playmaker at the #3 WR spot someone who could step up and perform if the #1 or #2 gets injured didn’t want a free agent WR wanted a youngster who can grow with Stafford for years to come. So I guess that makes me the moron. LOL.

I thought being lazy was a bad thing, So I gave up thinking.

by Wayne Fontes on Jan 17, 2011 3:46 PM EST up reply actions

Hey, that's a good argument to follow up with your name calling.

Well, “1st” CB’s and “1st” LB’s sound nice, but there is no guarantee at any position that we can get somebody that fits our team/system/scheme, so in the event that there isn’t a “top” player available at those positions. Then absolutely, we draft a WR or RB or OL if they are BPA.

Now, who’s the moron who wants to draft a player who doesn’t fit the team, won’t see the field, and gets cut 2 years later, while we miss out on an NFL Superstar because he didn’t fit our position of need?

NO HOMO!!!!!!!

by FMFDOC8404 on Jan 17, 2011 11:27 PM EST up reply actions

Cool it rip. Get off the internet and watch the Pistons win without you.

I will give you points for spelling moron correctly.

As others have said, Mayhew picks value. If there is a guy who has fallen [according to the Lions’ board not Kiper’s] they will take him. Especially if he fills a secondary need like WR or RB.

But I would be really surprised to see Baldwin drop very far. Especially all the way to # 44. Top notch WRs are pretty rare this draft and Baldwin is just a shade behind Green and Jones. No one else is really close.

by NorthLeft12 on Jan 19, 2011 7:53 AM EST up reply actions

oh yea

i’d also love to get another o-lineman early too, this way we can keep Stafford on the field most of the time and off his back. I think that if Fox gets off his ass this off season and gets in the weight room, and gets up to par strength wise, he will be a steal from last year’s 3rd round pick. What will help him most is going to get to practice agains a beast like Suh in practice. That will prepare him for the upcoming season.

by rip216 on Jan 17, 2011 8:11 AM EST reply actions

Fox was a late fourth round pick.

Our O Line is already very good at pass protection [top six or eight in the NFL in 2010].

Do you have some knowledge about Fox not working out in 2010 that we don’t?

You do know that Fox plays Tackle and would rarely have to block Suh in practice, right?
