Ideas on some offseason moves

Free agency:

Albert Haynesworth, DT - I honestly think Detroit will be his first choice (maybe besides Tennessee)and the only team to offer him right away, mainly because of whats here including KVB, Suh, Schwartz and Gunther. Could be a HUGE pick up, really could solidify us as having the best Dline in the league.

Le'Ron McClain, FB - Not exactly sure if he will be let go of by the Ravens but if he is, the Lions should make an attempt at him. Could really help Best turn into a bigger threat.

Wide Receiver(s) - I think that the Lions may be targeting a #3 and #4 receiver. Here are a couple options

  • Steve Breaston, WR - Would be a great pick up, can stretch the field, great in open space and was at his best when he had two legit wide outs in Bolden and Fitzgerald. Also ARIZ is gonna spend a ton of Fitz, might not have the money for Stevey.
  • Braylon Edwards, WR - Jets will probably not have the money to hold onto him and he could be a really good pick up to be the #2 and have Burleson in the slot. Dont sleep on the UofM boys.
  • Jacoby Jones, WR - I expect the Texans to bring him back, unless they go all in for Asomugha. Another player that is a big target and can stretch the field unlike BJ.

Offensive Line - It wasnt as bad as normal this year, actually did quite well minus the one big mistake by Backus at Chicago. Here are some options:

  • Jared Gaither, OT - He could be hit or miss, I see him being released after the hold out and lack of playing time.
  • Robert Gallery, OG - Former top pick of Oakland, has been pretty good after the move inside to guard.
  • Just stick it out with our guys and hopefully get some young guys

Linebacker(s) - I think the biggest pick up will be a linebacker, I think Mayhew will make a big time move whether it be a trade, sign or draft pick. Options:

  • Chad Greenway, OLB - Seems like he is everyones #1 free agent for Detroit but I dont think he will go anywhere
  • Thomas Davis, OLB - Very talented and an absolute freak of an athlete, but is coming off of a ACL tear.
  • Rocky McIntosh, LB - Don't know if he will be let go, but would be a great signing for the Lions defense. Would be that huge pickup needed for the Lions LBers

Secondary - Everyone knows our secondary is bad, so I expect at least 3 free agency pick ups since Houston and Delmas seem like the only guaranteed returning starters . Here are some options:

  • Nnamdi Asomugha, CB - Everyone wants him, im 99% sure he goes elsewhere.
  • Kelly Jennings, CB - Expected to be let go by Seattle, could be a solid 2nd/3rd corner.
  • Carlos Rogers, CB - Id like to see him in Honolulu Blue, would be a good #2
  • Quintin Mikell, S - C.C. Brown was bad, and Spievey is doing ok. Mikell would be a great pick up.
  • Jarrad Page, S - Was very well sought at before the trade deadline, would like to see him in Detroit.

Draft needs : Corner, Outside Linebacker, Offensive Guard, Safety, Speed Receiver

1st round, 13th overall : Von Miller, OLB, Texas A&M or Akeem Ayers, OLB, UCLA - Either would be solid and both are great athletes. Just matters who the coaching staff like most and whos available, most likely Ayers.

2nd round, 45th overall : Brandon Burton, CB, Utah - Kiper thinks he is one of the most underrated players in the draft and he considered him the #3 corner coming out.

3rd round, 77th overall : DeAndre McDaniel, S, Clemson - Coming into the season he was seen as a top 15 pick. Great athlete, big hitter, character issues but could be an absolute steal in the 3rd round.

4th round, 109th overall : Marcus Gilbert, OT, Florida - Good teams stock pile young offensive lineman so they can develop.

5th round, 141st overall : Dwayne Harris, WR, ECU - Good, elusive, fast receiver. Needed to be another deep threat.

7th round : Jonas Mouton, OLB, Michigan - Not just being a homer but I think Mouton could be a legit depth linebacker in the NFL. Plays that old school style most teams would love to have.

Hopeful/Probable Offense:

QB - Stafford

RB - Best

FB - McClain

WR1 - Calvin

WR2 - Burleson

WR3 - Breaston

TE - Pettigrew

Same Offensive line

Defense:

RDE - KVB

LDE - Avril

DT - Suh

DT - Williams/Haynesworth

SAM LB - McIntosh

MIKE LB -Levy

WILL LB - Ayers

CB1 - Houston

CB2 - Jennings/Burton

FS - Delmas

SS - McDaniel/Page

Asmougha is not an option I am positive

I won’t get into haynesworth again.. (this years Merriman I suppose) I have been a big advocate for Le’Ron and Breaston. Breaston is a good slot guy we keep Nate on the outside with him. Gaither I am against if we get him we do but he has had injury problems and supposedly work ethic problems. Not really a guy I want on are O line. I am open to Gallery not set one way or the other but the idea is intiguing.

Why do you hate AH so much?

Even our beloved Suh is pulling for Mayhew and Schwartz to get Albert.

by JFisch on Jan 17, 2011 12:53 PM EST up reply actions

First off I am not the only one here who dosen't want Albert

just a few reasons

1. Wasted cap- He will take up cap that can be spent elsewere that needs it more. Linebacker, Corners and OL. DT should be about the last position we spen it at.

2 He is not a leader. He has proven time and time again that he is not a leader of men not that every player is but he seems to have the opposite effect.

3. Overrated- Yeah Al has had good seasons but he has had several average as well. People think he’s a Reggie White or something and he’s not he’s good not great.

4. Record- Speaks for itself he’s not a “Clean” player by any means. He had a fantastic season in a contract year what about the other years where was he?

5. Needs- We have to many needs making a move for Albert we would likely lose a pick or a player something I am not willing to give up.

6. He will not start on this team-Nor should we and I don’t think we can keep Albert happy and when he is not happy well he makes Randy Moss look logical.

7 Young players- We have young guys like Sammie Lee Hill on the bench we don’t need to bring in this guy to drop him down the depth chart one more spot.

8 Redskins- Sure its not all his fault but can you really say " He won’t do that here" Whats the garuntee it’s not worth the risk vs the reward.

9. What does he add? – Other than a huge powerhouse in the middle what does he add that we don’t already have at the position?

10. Tennesee- He had issues there too with negative attitude, greed weight problems ect….All of this plus I have never forgotten him stepping on someone head fair or not has always left me with a very negative attitude towards him.

So I don’t like Haynesworth alot of people don’t probably for some other reasons as well but I dpn’t want him bottom line.

Good points Pro...100% agree with you.

We have to get past this point as fans of wanting to sign these over the hill “name” scrubs for the Lions. This team doesn’t need this type of player any longer, were developing our own talent now.

Signing Fat Albert, would be a pure M****n move, nothing more.

McClain,

I think that there are a couple of backs out there that will catch Schwartz and Inc’s eye like Snelling, Bush, P Thomas, White and hopefully McClain. I think that Gallery is intresting not on board yet but not against it either.

I am leaning alot towards Bush...

he has power and speed but i don’t think Oak will let him get away. I think Snelling is next on my list but anyone of them would be an upgrade to what we got now, minus Best.

Yah, I want a hard downhill runner. Not another multi-dimensional running back.

Best , Smith, Momo. All multi-dimensional. Momo a little less. But they can all catch very well out of the backfield. But if you have a bunch of multi-dimensional players, they aren’t as big of a threat because you become one-dimensional.

Um.

Snelling’s statline during this season looks really similar to best’s. 500 yards running, 500 receiving, couple-few TDs.

by Mavyrk on Jan 17, 2011 12:29 AM EST up reply actions

This is true.

But he is a good power runner when he just runs the ball.

Snelling would be used in a similar fashion in the D.

His stats may resemble Best but adding Snelling would give us an inside game to go along with the outside game of Best. I think his yards on the ground would go up and passing yards could take a hit with Petti, Schef, Heller and Best seeing most of the underneath work.

CJ81, BEST and SUH to the PRO BOWL....

by SmittyJ on Jan 17, 2011 11:34 AM EST up reply actions

Snelling would be a great pickup

He’s fast on pitches, hits the hole hard, and is a great check down threat (runs a similar route out of the backfield Linney really likes to run where he acts like he running outside and then runs a slant to the middle of the field…)

by rames on Jan 17, 2011 11:06 PM EST up reply actions

I would be happy with either but Bush is on my wish list.

Detroit really didn’t have a ground attack this year and everyone is praising the OL but imagine if we had a ground attack that could eat up 8 minutes on a scoring drive.

If you just watch highlights

Burton may well look better than he is. Not professing any real expertise but if you read other writeups he is said to gamble too frequently. Quite honestly the fact that Kiper likes him is almost a red flag. He’s gotta get one right sometime though.

But I really do not want anyone from that horific D that Michigan had this year. Sorry to say it but that was the most pathetic squad i have ever seen in my life. I’m not big on homer picks but Breaston is a huge yes for me, Edwards maybe!

If anything, it is a depth man who if needed can tackle well. And can contribute on special teams, has decent speed also

Thanks LfiPA. This is the kind of first hand info I have been looking for.

Does anyone here think that the Lions will make the committment to McClain that the Ravens won’t? That is financial and to get so many touches too?

Isn’t Felton complaining about the same thing in Detroit?

I just don’t see the Lions moving away from a two TE set or featuring McClain over Best, or even giving him enough carries that he would be happy here. The Ravens did not use him much in short yardage situations, he only had 28 carries in 2010.

by NorthLeft12 on Jan 17, 2011 11:34 AM EST up reply actions

Good Point

I never looked at it like that, nor do i think anyone else wanting McClain viewed it in that light. He could be a great addition to the run game but Detroit seem’s to be a pass first type offense. Having Felton and never using him or barely using him makes the ideal of signing a guy who wants to be more involved seem unlikely to happen.

Best is the featured back in Detroit and adding a guy like McClain who wants to be more of a featured back could create a headache. I think adding a guy like Bush, Snelling, Thomas or even White would make more sense, all of them come from a RB by committee offense and none of them are expressing there unhappiness about not touching the ball more.

CJ81, BEST and SUH to the PRO BOWL....

by SmittyJ on Jan 17, 2011 11:57 AM EST up reply actions

NO OFFENCE

…is pass first by choice. You are pass first because you can’t run the ball. Look at Green Bay. They are considered pass first but that is becaues they can’t run….but HOLD UP…AS SOOON as the Starks started running well they changed their toon. Passing the football is nice….but if you can’t run the ball you will never be great……remember the Colts record breaking season passing from mannning?…guess what they has a 1000 yard rusher that year as well…Stafford will never meet his peak without that aspect to the offence……fact.

One dimensional offences are a relief to face.. Think of all the times rooting for the Lions against a team that can run and pass. You almost get the sense you have no hope of stopping them unless they make a error…..guess what that is pretty much it.

by Shankdiddy on Jan 18, 2011 1:26 AM EST up reply actions

No team wants to be pass first...

But its what Detroit is, Calvin, Nate, Petti, Schef, Logan and Best way to much talent to not be a pass first team. I would like to see Detroit have a run game but the center, right guard and right tackle suck ass, Best, MoMo and Smith can run the ball if there not getting hit 3 yards in the backfield. I think even with arun game Detroit would be more of a pass happy team and turn into a run team in the later quarters or once they have a comfortable lead.

We need to develop

a worthwhile run game. Even the greatest show on turf included Marshall Faulk who ran well and was a threat to catch the ball out of the backfield as well.
Let’s face it Stafford has “stay healthy” concerns which hopefully will be resolved favorably but this nonetheless needs to be addressed. Also with the little playing time he’s had, though the early returns are good, it’s too early to annoint him as a franchise qb with certainty. Can he throw the fade and jump ball with consistent accuracy? He hasn’t thus far but admittedly the sample size is too small to say with certainty. I feel he’ll pass the tests and will get past the health concerns but that hasn’t happened yet.
Currently we have no 3rd outside receiving threat which we can and have worked around successfully but if either CJ or Nate miss significant time with injuries where are we? Hopefully we’ll find 1 or 2 good candidates but we haven’t yet.
A worthwhile run game gives us a better chance to win games with a Shaun Hill at qb and one of our top 2 receivers on the bench. Secondly if we are fortunate enough to be in the playoffs it gives us a much better chance to go succeed as we get past the first game.

As for Le'ron I don't want him as a FB

I want him to play HB and start none the less. He’s done it before why does he have to be a blocker I think he can be a feature power runner.

The players are buying in and we have a bright future- (The Pain Train) Zack Follett.

by The Profiler on Jan 17, 2011 5:52 PM EST up reply actions

+1000 I want Le"Ron as the feature.

Gives Linney formation options ,he could spread Best out, use him in a two-back with McClain leading. I remember well how McClain ran down the Lions throats a few years ago. We can count on McClain to knock the tackling LB’er backwards for an additional yard or two. Best will still get his touches but the majority will come from short passing routes, and screens plays designed to get him into space.Heller in the backfield with Le’Ron is good for 3 to 4 tough yards.

I thought being lazy was a bad thing, So I gave up thinking.

I think the Lions committment to McClain could be an issue

but getting 28 carries for the whole season when he’s proven he can carry the load (almost 1,000 two years ago) does seam unresonable (for him). I don’t think you’d have to make him the featured back for him to be happy, just 5-7 carries a game (average). I wanted to see more of Felton, but I think Linney didn’t feel he could trust the power of Felton (or possibly his fumbleness…). I’m hoping that’s the reason anyhow, Linney was used to a brusing run game (i.e. Stephen Jackson)

RA

by rames on Jan 17, 2011 10:05 PM EST up reply actions

I do

I don’t think there would be any issue in targeting giving McLain an avg of like 8-10 touches a game or more and not cut into Best’s role. Ideally Best would only be getting 10-15 at most runs a game with half that in catches perhaps. McClain can be a valued 3rd down and red zone back to change up other redzone options. I think the biggest reason for 2 TE love has been the lack of receiving corps and also quality blocking. A good lead blocker as well as pass blocker such as McClain would be a great addition. Look how many plays they had Felton in this year and you can see they wouldn’t have to even change much to get McClain. It’s just a matter of how many times they go with him with the ball.

indeed

Then again if I was looking at Jets FA receivers it’s an easy choice to take Holmes over Edwards, for me. Breaston would be a solid #2 as well, but the leader on my board for FA WR pickups after Holmes would be Sims-Walker who is likely to be moving on.

but those guy might want to be more(#2s)as i think Breaston would want to be a #2 also. there is one guy who needs to work his way up again and his name is Plaxico. he’s old. 34yr old but he needs to prove his worth in the NFL and at the #3 WR spot in Detroit i think would be a place to start. If we could sign Plax to a 1 year deal id be all for it.

by mochaj on Jan 18, 2011 12:20 AM EST up reply actions

pretty much

they would want to be a #2 in pay and in role. I don’t think any of the guys suggested in this thread would want anything less. When it comes to the actual type of usage and role on the club I think of the #2 as a guy who’s on the other side typically running more deep routes. That isn’t how Burelson is best suited. He’s an over the middle try to make something happen after the catch type of guy. IMO we don’t need a slot run the flats type of receiver but a true field stretching #2.

My hopeful offseason

FA pickups:

  • Lamarr Woodley, OLB: IMO, the most important man sitting out there in FA. The Lions should focus ALL attention on him and do whatever to get him on our team. All-around great player and only the second Steeler to ever record double-digit sacks in 3 consecutive seasons.
  • One of the 3 WRs listed above…any is really fine with me as they all have positives and negatives that don’t outweigh one another.
  • Gallery or another G to compete with Peterman.
  • Albert Haynesworth, DT: Say what you want, but I want him.

Draft Pickups:

  • 1st Round: Prince, CB Nebraska: If he’s there at 13 it’s a no brainer, otherwise, depending on player ratings as of right now, I look towards Janoris Jenkins outta Florida or an OLB.
  • 2nd Round: If we get Prince or Jenkins in the 1st, I think we look to OLB here, possibly Greg Jones.
  • 3rd-5th Rounds: Power RB, WR, and OG/C
  • 7th Round: Whatever.

Projected lineup:
QB: Staff, Hill, Stanton
RB: Best, Power RB*, Morris, Smith
FB: Felton
WR: CJ, Burleson, Breaston, Draft Pick*, DWill, Logan
TE: Pettigrew, Scheffler, Heller
T: Backus, Cherilus, Hillard, Fox
G: Sims, Gallery*, Peterman
C: Raiola, Gandy
K: Rayner

DE: Avril, LoJack, Young
DT: Suh, SLH
DT: Haynesworth*, CW
DE: KVB, Turk
OLB: Woodley, Carpenter
MLB: Levy, Dizon
OLB: Jones*, Palmer
CB: Prince, Smith, Berry
CB: Houston, Vasher
FS: Delmas, Wendling
SS: Spievey, Phillips
P: Harris
LS: Muhlback

That’s our 53-man opening day roster! Prediction: Super Bowl — Fuck Ya Peace!

No Woodley.

You want to spend the most money on a guy that would not be able to to what he does best. Woodley is either a 3-4 OLB or an undersized 4-3 DE. Neither of which makes any sense for what Schwartz and Mayhew are building on that side of the ball.

by doctorj on Jan 17, 2011 4:18 PM EST up reply actions

And...

…Jenkins is staying in school.

by doctorj on Jan 17, 2011 4:18 PM EST up reply actions

Good point bout Jenkins

But you get the point, hopefully a starting caliber CB at 13 or a LB.
On Pratt, I guess he is interchangeable with Vasher, but very very doubtful he’s going to supplant either Houston or Smith.
On Woodley, you’re nuts if you think he couldn’t easily fit into Schwartz/Gunner’s LB crew. I’m sure they would love to have the ability to blitz him 15-20 times per game. He’s a probowler in any scheme. He’s just a downright awesome player. I don’t think just because it’s a 4-3 system instead of 3-4 he’s going to disappear. Sure maybe 3-4 is more suited for him, but heavy blitzing D’s would suit him just as well.

by JFisch on Jan 17, 2011 6:26 PM EST up reply actions

Oh BTW when Julian Peterson made the probowl

He was playing a rush linebacker postion…on rush downs he played end. He basiclly played the style of a 3-4 rush linebacker…then he joins us and all of a sudden he disappears …WONDER WHY GUYS!!! BECAUSE HE IS PLAYING OUT OF POSITION…he doesn’t have the skill sets of a 4-3 OLB. And it showed….yes he is athlete and can play the 4-3 ok..but at times disappeared…because this system isn’t his strenght…………PERFECT EXAMPLE of why all of you guys out there asking for all of these 3-4 linebackers to come here is a totally waste….your asking a guy who doesn’t good at one thing to switch and try to excell at something totally different………..two totally different positions….night and day…..not even close.

Outside Linebacker in a 3-4 is a pass rusher first run defence 2nd….OLB in a 4-3 is a run defender first pass coverage 2nd….so you mean to tell me you want to get a guy that plays a rusher and make him drop back and cover people?…and tackle people in space?….sorry man but he is a BEAST 3-4 OLB…but he isn’t a 4-3 OLB not even close.

Everyone that says things about making some 3-4 OLB a 4-3 OLB makes no sense period….your changing their positions makes as much sense as bringing in a safety and asking him to play press coverage man to man defence lol. Sorry but this is two totaly different positions ….THIS ISN’T JOHN MADDEN FOOTBALL ….guys really this is old……………to date we have had this conversation about Von Miller….Shawn Merriman….not Woodley..all i have to say is >>>> facepalm

p.s. i am not saying they can’t play it…but why bother…just like asking Javhid best to play Quarterback…maybe he could do it…but why?….sorry but everytime i read that its like as if …as if they think these guys have john madden player ratings and they can just move them to any position and you win.

Not so sure about Woodley

Since he played 4-3 in college with Michigan.

Janoris Jenkins is going back to school...

It's a terrible thing to have to tell your fans, who have waited like Detroit's have, that their team won't win it this year. But it's better than lying to them.

The ability to blitz

would be a plus as long as our target LB plays the run well, covers well and drops properly on passing plays. We get good push from our front four and rarely blitz. When we do it’s usually with a cb or safety, possibly because our LB’s this year weren’t good pass pushers. Yes hopefully next year the option of a LB blitz is there but not at the expense of the other more important skills in our defense.

@ Justan Oldfart...

sigh ….our Linebackers aren’t asked to pass rush ….Lions rarely biltz and guess what ..thats a good thing. This is ideal defence to rush with 4 and cover with the max amount of defenders in coverage…YET still get to the passer. You don’t bring 3-4 Linebacker that doesn’t have the skill sets to play the position of a 4-3 OLB. There are cases where someone can do that. But why would it even be logical to get someone to play our defence and have them drop back and cover people if their main skill is to rush the passer?….makes no sense what so ever

How bout you quit your dumbass sighing as if you are the only one who knows anything. If you knew how to read you’d realize you rephrased what I said

to be honest i hit copy paste on wrong name lol...was refering to JFisch

your right i am agreeing with you….forgive my frustration with reading all of these posts about someone wanting some 3-4 OLB. Its like wanting to get a guy and having do something totally different.
