Detroit Lions 2011 Pt. 2, LB.

In my first posting i listed free agents rather they will be RFA or UFA is unknown as of now, i also did a poll on  FA runningback's that you would like to see in the D. Today we will look at linebacker's.

Star-divide

Lets talk linebacker, right now DeAndre Levy and Ashlee Palmer are the only two that are under contract that our worthy of starting or used as depth and special teams. Jim Schwartz and the Detroit Lions org. have expressed there intrest in bringing back Bobby Carpenter and have made it public that Julian Peterson won't be returning for the 2011 season. Detroit needs to fill holes at LB, CB, OL, RB and WR so think like a GM.

Chad GreenwayLeRoy Hill, Stewart Bradley, David Harris, Manny Lawson, Rocky McIntosh.

Take Greenway off the list...

Singletary is going to Minnesota to coach LBers…

by CLF on Jan 18, 2011 1:15 PM EST reply actions

Well Greenway is there to make it intresting...

He is a POD favorite in FA, I dont think that Singletary going to Minny will make him stay right now i think Greenway is looking for a fresh start.

I'm not sure about that.

I hear Greenway goes home to his dad’s farm during the offseason and does all the chores etc. If that’s true, then you can’t count on him doing the normal thing and going for money.

Well Detroit isn't that much further

New faces and coaches is what i meant by fresh start…

Yes He Would.

BOBBY " BOUCHER " CARPENTER for PRESIDENT...

You could be right

But with no QB in Minny right now he might start thinking about leaving. I know that can change quickly Kolb, Dono could very well end up there.

Also Schwartz and Gunny put there stamp on this team. A player like Greenway might look at our Defence than our offence and say that’s a team I want to be with for the next 5-6 years.

by msivits on Jan 18, 2011 2:49 PM EST up reply actions

Schwartz and Gun

I agree w/ the stamp comment, i think alot of FA’s will see that Detroit is the new hot bed.

I don't see Greenway or Harris going anywhere.

Besides, Harris does not really fit here. We have a MLB.

by NorthLeft12 on Jan 18, 2011 1:19 PM EST reply actions

I can't say if they will go or stay...

I like the chances of Greenway staying more than Harris but i think they both test the market, Harris would fit nicely in Gun’s scheme. He is a sure tackler, can cover and always seems to be around the ball, i understand he is a ILB but its on a 3-4 D which is closer to a 4-3 OLB then MLB.

Yeah at the moment.

But everything will be in order before FA hits, to much money in the NFL to have the season delayed.

I can see our FO

Building our LB around Levy, Palmer should stay, Carpenter should be resigned for a chance to start or depth, Detroit will probably over pay for a chance to sign Greenway or Lawson, and I can see them drafting a LB in the 1st unless one of the top 2 CB’s fall there. That should shore up our LB area.

I again don’t see any big trades or signing with our CB’s. Schwartz will go with a strong front 4 will pressure the QB enough to make up for a below avg. secondary.

Also with Schwartz, and Vandenboch on the team. Lions will make a hard run at Fat albert. With Suh and Vandenboch leading the team Fat Albert could fall back in line pretty quick…

by msivits on Jan 18, 2011 3:03 PM EST reply actions

Levy is the center piece of the D...

I like Palmer, is he starting material idk but he is a damn good back-up and solid on special teams. When it comes to Boucher if he isn’t resigned and named a starter Detroit has truely went back to the Millen era, i don’t think he should be given the job but earn it.

I think the chances of Detroit overpaying for a LB will more than likely happen, last year i felt that KVB and Nate were overpayed. I don’t know if it will be Greenway or Lawson but a LB is about to get paid in Detroit, but wouldn’t be shooked to see Lawson or Harris come play in Detroit for a reasonable contract, David Harris is home grown (Grand Rapids, Mi)

I think that your right about the secondary but i don’t want Haynesworth. I think that Jim and KVB could help AH get his shit together but he is to far gone, give me Alan Branch or Gabe Watson.

Stephen Tulloch

Solid and improving since he was selected in 2006 by the (drum roll please…) Tennessee Titans*. I really don’t watch Tennessee Titans play at all this year and can’t say I watch any film but the numbers look good and more importantly increasing. Started all 16 games for the first time this year, 160 tackels and 6 Passes Def. Sounds like he fits the need of run stopping pass support – solid player but not big name or big bucks. The connection to the coaches cannot be ignored.

From Footballs Future.com “Tulloch has had a better season in the middle of the Titans defense than most would have expected coming into the year. He trails only Jerod Mayo in tackles and has been just as good as his numbers indicate. He does a good job in the hole and cleans up plays.”

*Where Jim Schwartz was Defensive Coordinator.

The draft is no longer the most exciting time of the year.

I like Stephen Tulloch...

he is a Schwartz guy and could very easily be on his way to Detroit. His contract could be tricky as far as high or low, he is coming off a pro bowl year and could demand somewhere near top pay for a LB.

Bobby "Boucher" Carpenter for President...

by SmittyJ on Jan 18, 2011 3:52 PM EST up reply actions

I like Tulloch a lot, but...

He will force Deandre Levy to the outside. I am not sure the Lions want to do that. They seem to be very happy with Levy in the middle. Heck, they got rid of Larry Foote, which they knew would be very unpopular with the fans, to give Levy the starting job.

by TuffLynx on Jan 18, 2011 11:31 PM EST up reply actions

Foote

That hurt, but he did leave town with a few choice words for Detroit. I think if Detroit could get Tulloch at a decent price there will be alot of willingness from Schwartz, Gun and Levy to either play strong or weak side. Plus lets not forget we got Bobby “Boucher” Carpenter as well as Palmer, i think that both will have a impact on this team from starting, depth and down to special teams.

I agree how many more times will

you guys need to hear Mayhew say “we liked levy to be our middle linebacker, that is why we drafted him” He is not moving. You can take that to the bank.

by blizzrd on Jan 19, 2011 9:44 AM EST up reply actions

David Harris

He will come with a hefty price tag and we have a MLB but IMO he is the best player out of that list.

The players are buying in and we have a bright future- (The Pain Train) Zack Follett.

by The Profiler on Jan 18, 2011 4:48 PM EST reply actions

Pro...

He could come with a hefty price tag but after reading the shit on K Smooth you think its possible Harris will want to come play for his hometown. I think that we have one of the better chances at landing him, he’s from G Rap and Played for Uof M. Harris is a ILB on a 3-4 D which in my opinion is close to OLB in a 4-3 D, Harris is very smart and athletic and i think that he could make the jump from inside to outside.

OLB in a 4-3

cover
tackle
read
react

I think that Harris is got all of the above… and some.

by SmittyJ on Jan 18, 2011 5:19 PM EST up reply actions

Kind of the same argument I have used for Breaston

Not because he is a Michigan player but because he is we might have a good chance of getting him at a fair price. I think Harris is good enough he could start at any LB spot on this roster but there would be somewhat of a learning curve.

by The Profiler on Jan 18, 2011 5:30 PM EST up reply actions

Yes sir

that why the sooner we can get him in the better off both the Lions and Harris will be. Harris will catch on very quickly. I think that if we cant get Harris than Manny Lawson would have to be next on my list.

Bobby "Boucher" Carpenter for President...

by SmittyJ on Jan 18, 2011 5:35 PM EST up reply actions

Breaston drops a lot of balls.

And if you believe the Killer, the Lions don’t want a slot receiver. They want a guy to play the other WR position and can stretch the field. According to PFF stats he had eight drops in 82 targets in 2010, 2 in 80 in 2009, and 9 in 106 in 2008. That sucks.

by NorthLeft12 on Jan 19, 2011 6:13 AM EST up reply actions

I like Breaston and Moore

But i also don’t think that Detroit will get either one of them, its hard to say who they will be intrested in really. Holmes, Edwards, James Jones, Doucet,Jacoby Jones or Mark Clayton to be honest i could live with any of them on the team.

Bobby "Boucher" Carpenter for President...

by SmittyJ on Jan 19, 2011 9:35 AM EST up reply actions

Breastons big problem this year

is they are trying to use him to replace boldin. Thats not his skill set he is better off as a 3rd slot type of guy. I dunno why I should belive “Killer” he’s making an uneducated guess like the rest of us. He dosen’t work next to mayhew. I this Nate played very well as a number 2 I am not so sure they are looking to move him out of that spot. Who knows trying to figure out Maywartz is like trying to solve a rubix cube where all the stickers have been moved.

The players are buying in and we have a bright future- (The Pain Train) Zack Follett.

by The Profiler on Jan 19, 2011 4:43 PM EST up reply actions

Killer is quite a bit above us...

on his information. For one, it is all he does, and for two, he has access to Allen Park and talks to guys from the practice squad to Mayhew. He may not know for sure, but his “feeling” is a lot stronger than any research we could ever do.

Greenway and Harris are the ones that jump out

But are they feasible? Other than that, Lawson or maybe Bradley.

I was on the Greenway bandwagon,

Kinda jumped to Harris and after that Lawson… but wouldn’t complain if we got any of them.

I am not really on the Lawson bandwagon

All I have heard about him( from the media, radio, or fans) out here in SF is. He is an average player at best. And most wanted him replaced last year. I do not think anyone will shed a tear if Manny leaves.

Sure would fit in nicely here in the D...

the fact that he can cover a TE or RB and can tackle like a MLB make me want him more and more…

I would LOVE to have Chad Greenway, but...

Greenway was very vocal in his support for making Leslie Frazier the head coach. I think he probably feels some loyalty to Frazier and the Vikings, so he is likely to let the Vikings match any offer to keep his services.

by TuffLynx on Jan 18, 2011 11:36 PM EST reply actions

Prolly Right

But i think that Harris or Lawson could fit perfect in Gun’s scheme, Greenway is Beast but Harris is to and Lawson is the kinda guy Schwartz and Gun can turn into a beast. I can’t get over how good Harris and Lawson would fit in Detroit both are in a 3-4 D now but could easliy make the switch to OLB in a 4-3.

I don't know about harris

Don’t get me wrong I think he is great, and I wanted him in the second when we picked Stanton. But I just don’t think he drops back well in coverage. Not to mention he looks thick kinda like Ray lewis. I guess I’m used to the taller fast outside linebacker like a Lawson.

by blizzrd on Jan 19, 2011 4:48 PM EST reply actions

With Harris and Greenway getting almost all the attention

I decided to do a little research on each of them. This is mostly taken from Jets and Vikings blogs and newspaper articles, so I cannot attest to the accuracy.

Greenway: Usually plays the Strong Side OLB in Minnesota’s 4-3. He is known as being very good in coverage (especially against TE’s) and covers well to the sideline on run plays. OK in run defense in general.

Harris: Plays MLB in the Jet’s 3-4 system (and based on his speed and size many believe he projects better as an OLB than MLB in a 4-3). Great run stuffer, and may be one of the 3 best LB’s in the NFL sheerly against the run. OK when asked to blitz, but is not asked to do it a lot in the Jet’s system. Mediocre in coverage, but may improve if asked to cover more.
