Stafford got Cut today, wtf....

via t1.gstatic.com

Killer is reporting that Matt Stafford has had Shoulder Surgery today.  Dr James Andrews performed a repair of the AC Joint and a Shaving of the Clavicle in Staffords Throwing Shoulder.  Now I'll be the first to admit, I was all for Stafford getting Surgery to repair his AC joint.  Just look at Sam Bradford, his shoulder looked great this year after almost the same injury his senior year of college.  I just don't understand why you would do it now, instead of 2 months ago.

Stafford is said to be out for 4 months now recovering from this surgery,  which puts his return around the end of May.  I don't think that the recovery time will hurt Matt, and provided a new CBA gets done, he will be around for "Most" of the Off Season conditioning and workouts.

But the one thing I am worried about, is.... Let's say that a new CBA does not get done before March 5.  And the owners Lockout the players,  And now Stafford can not have any contact with the Team, Trainers, Coaches, Team Doctors.  This means that for the rest of March, April, and May, Stafford will have to Rehab the Shoulder, on his own.

I'm Glad Matt got the Surgery, I'm Confident that he will come back Stronger and Ready next year.  I just don't get why they did it now, as opposed to earlier.

I agree, the team will for sure set him up with a Trainer, on a Schedule.

It just bums me out that this could have been done 2, 3. 4 months ago and Stafford could be almost healed. He could have made the March OTAs, (provided no lockout). And in the event of a Lock-Out he could be working out with his Recievers in the Summer. Now in the event off a lockout he will be working with the Lions bootleg trainers, with no contact with his HC or OC or Team Doctors.

With all the shoulder posts to choose from

I chose yours due to the snappy title. I’m sure he’ll be more than ready for our next season. Go 2012 Lions!

It's turkey, Lions and Macy's. Any other combination is just ludicrous.

It seems Dr. Andrews changed his mind

The doctor probably had another chance to look at the injury. He likley told Stafford that it could heal like Bradford’s did with the surgery.

or Stafford just wasn't healing like he had first expected.

Possibly

being so close to the injuries it could still have been swollen, inflamed, etc.

Does anyone want to go through another year like this past one?

Holding your breath that a love tap doesn’t sideline the franchise again?

I sure don’t. This is where the rubber meets the road. No more bullshitting around rehab stints.

The only legend around here is the one that exists in your own mind.

Yeah, I'm GLAD he got it done, make me even More confident for next year.

I just wish when Matt was debating the decision initially, whether or not to get Cut. He would have took the route Suh did, that he wants to get it done fast so he can get back fast.

The radio is saying that

No OTA’s played into the decision. He won’t be missing much.

by delusional on Jan 21, 2011 4:37 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

Yeah, that is what I was thinking

He figured that with the labor negotiations scrapping the OTAs that he wouldn’t be missing much. Plus his understanding of the offense at this point is not questioned. So all he really needs to do is rehab the shoulder and he really won’t be any worse off come June, if they are playing again then.

Two thoughts.

1) I’m thinking they decided not to give him surgery or even talk about surgery during the season for fan morale concerns, opting instead to take a close look at it when the offseason started.

2) Suh made him do it.

3) Team therapist helped him over his surgery phobia.

I like these quotes

“Andrews, in the same release, said the procedure — an AC joint repair done in Pensacola, Fla. — "was very successful."

"It went very well," he said. "We now have plenty of time for a full recovery in order for him to get ready for next season. The procedure is the same one that we have successfully performed on a number of NFL quarterbacks. Matthew has one of the strongest arms in the league, and I am confident that he will be as strong as ever."

I’m confident as well. He’s going to make mistakes, but the excitement he brings will be great. Can’t wait to see him play again!

Yes sir

I suppose it’s a doctor’s job to be optimistic after surgery, but it still sounds like everything went smoothly, which is music to my ears.

MAN I’m gonna be pissed if there’s no football next season, I haven’t been this optimistic about the Lions since the days of Barry, for real, and I can’t remember the last time I honestly thought we were in position to make a playoff push.

by motown313 on Jan 21, 2011 9:21 PM EST up reply actions

Very true

I don’t think James Andrews would say “Yeah, totally screwed that one up. I’m sure I’ll nail the next one though. Sorry, Lions fans, my bad.” no matter how things went.

I agree j16941

He should have been cut on at the latest the week he went on injury reserve. However, I was against surgery at first. But, it looks like it was having a tough time healing on its own. Get better Matthew! GO LIONS!

How so? :-)

I am very happy that he had the surgery, but I wish they would have man’d up and done it in November to allow for not only rehab, but also an upper body strengthening program.

I always thought that he would be stronger with the surgery than with rehab. My only additional wish is that they would have done the left shoulder while they were in there too. He would have come out as a modern day $6 million dollar man. lol.

No more china doll. Hooray!!!

It was 3rd & 7; Delhomme dropped to pass
"Man, I hope, I don't get knocked on my ass"
He felt twisting and clawing, "When will it stop?"
Then SUH ripped his head off, like a bottle of pop!!

Yeah, I'm a Lions fan

just poking fun. God, I hope this will be the end of his injury woes.
