Which NY WR would you like...

Plaxico should be back in the league this upcoming football season. He has been in prison for gun charges resulting in a bloody mess in his leg. It also has been talked about that JETS cant afford their big name WRs. So we got Santonio Holmes, Braylon Edwards or Plaxico Burress. Im not sure who the JETS are going to resign but if for some reason they let Santonio walk i would not be above signing him. I know he has had some off field issues but the guy would be a complete terror with CJ, Nate Burleson, Pettigrew, Best and hopefully Stafford.

Some of you might not think that WR is even a position that needs to be addressed, while its not the most important  we cant play 10 vs 11 some of the game with BJ being on the field. If we dont get any of the above mentioned guys i would also look at Mr. Breaston.  Any ways let me know what you guys think

Well if I were to just answer the base question what NY WR would you like....

Otherwise Braylon would be awesome to bring home and Santonio is a great clutch player. Both would be very good additions. Plax has had issues pre-Jail that I’m not sure I want like being late for practice and not showing up for OTAs type stuff. Though I would never argue that Plax is one of the best recivers I have ever seen and if we could work out a very restricted contract that includes punishment for some of these things and an easy out for the Lions I’d be open to him I suppose. I guess to pick one I’d have to look at what each one brings to the table and what we would need from them. I suppose I’d like Braylon more but we probably could benifit from Holmes more than him. Plax brings alot of the same skills as calvin but would create a hell of a duo and put Nate back in the slot. Even though I am not opposed to keeping Nate where he is now and adding a guy like Breaston in the slot. So to answer your question….I dunno LOL probably Santonio makes more sense

Why would we want any of the 3

Braylon is gonna want to be paid like a #1 WR, mmmmmmm no thanks

Homes is gonna want the chance to be a #1 but will settle for #2 money on a good team, and we already have Nate.

If I had too choose one I’d actually take Plax, he can be a solid #2 and move Nate to slot. And I don’t think he’ll have people lining up at the door with his age. That’s even a long shot of him coming here.

Plax

1 year deal he would be cheapest since hes been out of the league for a few years, and also he is big like BJ but has 200% better hands than BJ. he could step right on in to BJs spot and catch balls like BJ couldnt. i wouldnt mind Plax at all bring him in

by mochaj on Jan 25, 2011 2:30 PM EST reply actions

I really don't think we can get any of those guys.

I would sign Holmes if I had the chance, and he was cheap. I think there are a lot of WRs available in the draft or will be available in FA that can fill that spot [# 3 WR].

by NorthLeft12 on Jan 25, 2011 2:46 PM EST reply actions

For a WR3 yu don't need, or even want, somebody flashy

You want a guy that has a little speed to beat a safety. They need to run good routes and catch the ball when it is thrown to them. But we also need a WR3 that is affordable because they are only on the field part time.

Of all the guys that were mentioned, Steve Breaston best fills that role. He may also be more affordable than the others. But I am not sure he will be affordable enough since he might get WR2 money from the Cardinals.

I am still of the mind that we should get our WR3 on the cheap. The nest solution would be for Derrick Williams to step up, but that is definitely not a sure thing. Maybe Aaron Brown could switch to WR to win a roster spot. He seems to catch the ball pretty well and he has good speed. Maybe Tim Toone will have developed enough to get a shot at the spot. Seriously, if we can salvage one of those guys that is the best possible option for the Lions.

While having a good WR3 is nice, it is not so critical that we cannot try one of the guys we have there. We have options on the roster that can cover that spot. Stefan Logan, Jahvid Best, and Tony Scheffler have all filled the WR3 role with good results. So it is not like we cannot cover the position if the draftees don’t work.

I sincerely believe the need to bring in a new player for this position is overblown. We have options on the roster now and backup plans in case they don’t work. We should let the existing situation play out.

by TuffLynx on Jan 25, 2011 3:12 PM EST reply actions

agree...

I want to see us draft a burner with good hands in the mid-late rounds. We don’t need to put even more money into the WR spot and all we need is a guy who can beat safeties deep and catch bombs. This will open the middle up for guys like Pettigrew/Burleson/RB and then the opponents will have to keep both safeties back to respect CJ and the speedster.

by lions_sucker on Jan 25, 2011 4:39 PM EST up reply actions

I totally agree

While I would love to see Holmes come our way, I don’t see the contract as affordable. To that end I think Burress will end up playing for a relatively cheap insentive based contract. If he comes back in old form I think he’d be fantastic on the opposite side of Calvin. I think you hit it on the head that DWill has his chance this season. After that I would expect a late round or UFA or two to be checked out.

I know he isn't listed but i'd take Manningham...

yup over Edwards, Holmes and Burress the kid would be killer w/ CJ81 and Nate.

If not him, then I say go after Plaxico.

Agreed

He’d fit our needs at WR perfectly. That would be a nasty 3 WR set.

by TX Lion on Jan 25, 2011 8:34 PM EST up reply actions

None of the above

We can’t tie up that much money at the WR position.

While the players follow the money, owners need to balance the money. To me, it makes sense to have one star per position and to pay that person as a star should be paid. Beyond that, the other players are there to supplement the top guy.

We already overpaid to secure Nate. While I feel he would be better in the slot, we need to find our #2 through the draft. A lot of people point out Mike Wallace on a guy we passed on in the draft, he would have easily won the 2 spot had we drafted him. There are more Mike Wallace types out there and that’s what we need.

We have to pay for defensive backs. It’s fun to sepculate about what our team could be with a superstar ensemble of wide receivers, but that mentality made us one of the worst teams in the league.

by joshisdabombb on Jan 25, 2011 4:52 PM EST reply actions

who's the next Wallace?

I haven’t seen any genuine burners in the draft this year (though I haven’t read every scouting report). I keep seeing okay to good speed but not elite like Wallace, DeSean, Calvin, Jahvid etc…but i agree that if we can find one, it wouldn’t matter that much about some of the other skills necessary (like route technique), because we’d mainly just need someone who can get separation on a CB and burn a safety from time to time. That would stretch that defense and force two deep safetys more than the D would like, thus opening up stuff in the intermediate range (CJ was much improved in this area this year and Scheff + Pettigrew can do more damage)…plus limit the dimensions of the opposing D (unless they gamble and we can make them pay…)

Titus Young of Boise State is getting a good look from the Lions at the Senior Bowl.

He is not a very big guy, 5’ 11" and 174 [? – that is almost exactly my height and weight!] but has sub 4.4 speed [apparently] and has been lighting up the Senior Bowl practices so far.

Which unfortunately means he is not much of a “sleeper” anymore.

by NorthLeft12 on Jan 26, 2011 7:08 AM EST up reply actions

I seen that on mocking the draft

Haven’t seen a ton on Titus but I like the idea of getting him. From what I have seen he’s a very quick good handed reciver. He can stretch the field pretty well. I am intrigued by him now I never considered him a possibillity.

Manningham has the most upside I would say…His rookie deal is up already?

im not sure thats why i didnt mention him... i was just pondering this at work today.

I dont really think any of the NY wr’s will happen but i was just thinking about it for some reason and decided to see what everyone else thought. Breaston is a possibility but other than that it will be someone on the cheap or someone in the draft but not real high

Gyorick, I don't know if you are the one getting married but here is a tip from someone celebrating his 28th anniversary.....

Don’t refer to your upcoming wedding as a headache to your bride to be. It does not go over too well.

It is a totally accurate statement [I’ll bet] but the love of your life will not appreciate hearing it referred to in that way.

The honest truth is that I work on the road all week and trying to coordinate meetings and talking on the phone with her and whoever else about getting stuff lined up is the headache. Its not so much her as its just a pain in the ace trying to handle the extra load on the road.

Lions need a player like Holmes

someone who can make a last second play to win the game.

You just delt with DA DAWG

by The Dawg on Jan 26, 2011 12:17 AM EST reply actions

Isn't that why you pay CJ the big bucks?

If he can’t make the big play to win a game then he isn’t as good as we think he is.

by TuffLynx on Jan 26, 2011 2:26 AM EST up reply actions

True

I’m pretty sure you’re not arguing that he can’t make the big play to win the game, but I just thought someone should make this obligatory post. We’ve all seen enough of CJ to know that if you throw it up to him in the end zone he will do things I’ve never seen people do to try to make the catch.

by sthelen_45 on Jan 26, 2011 8:58 AM EST up reply actions

You and I are on the same page

I am just saying that you don’t normally expect everybody on the field to be a big time impact player. Guys that are that clutch usually get more money than the Lions are going to pay for a part time player. What you are looking for in a WR3 is not a guy that will dazzle and amaze you. You are just looking for a good solid player that makes plays.

by TuffLynx on Jan 26, 2011 9:27 AM EST up reply actions

For my actual response to this post

For some time I was firmly on the “we don’t need another WR” side. However, I started to think about it and there are many teams with WR’s all over the field that can make a play when you need them to. Looking at my Lions, I just don’t see that. If you think that Burleson is a 2 then we need a 3 that can make a catch when the ball’s thrown to him. If Burleson is a 3/slot, which I think he is, then we need to find another outside guy. I’m not saying this is a giant need, but another capable WR is certainly an area that needs to be looked at. I will say that when Scheffler was put in the slot he looked pretty good. That was mostly when Burleson was out. So, I just talked myself in circles. To sum up, I wouldn’t be mad if the Lions did go out and try to get another capable WR, either through FA or the draft.
