I am sitting here trying to figure out who the Lions will pick at 13, and there are too many names that are popping into my head right now, so I tried to make sense of it all, and here is what I came up with:
I think Mayhew's past draft trends tells us a lot about the profile a Lions first round pick needs to meet. Lions have basically had five first round picks over the last two years if you count Delmas as a first rounder. Only two of them were consensus picks in Stafford and Suh, but the rest were high debatable picks when they were taken. They do, however, give us a window into what type of players Mayhew likes.
I think when you look at guys like Jahvid Best, Louis Delmas, and Brandon Pettigrew, the first thing that pops out at me is the fact that they are all multi-faceted players. Best is one of the best pass catching running backs in the NFL already. You could make the argument that Pettigew is the most complete TE in the NFL. Delmas is great at both run support and pass coverage. None of them were elite athletes in terms of physical traits. Sure, Pettigrew is huge and Best is lighting fast, but neither of them have the complete physical traits (ie Best is not 6'2, 250 and Pettigrew doesn't run a 4.4 40 time). Still, they are very good NFL players with potential to be great because they can hurt you in so many ways, which I think is something Mayhew looks for when selecting players.
If you take those factors into consideration, I think you can cancel out quite a few of the possible picks. As in, bye bye Mike Pouncey or Nate Solder. The guys that fit the multi-talented role perfectly: Von Miller obviously. Brandon Harris too, and lastly Akeem Ayers. Personally, I don't see the Lions going after a linebacker in round one. Not the typical 4-3 weakside linebacker anyways. The Lions closely follow the Colts drafting system, and that means no LBs before at least round two, and that makes a lot of sense as linebackers are probably the safest position to draft and the easiest (next to RB) to find in middle rounds of the draft. Plus, most first round LBs don't live up to the billing (Aaron Curry anyone?).
So with all that said, I think the Lions first round pick will be Brandon Harris if Prince Amukamara isn't on the board.
