Around SBN: NFL Players Ready To Welcome Gay Teammate

First Offseason plan

Its a great feeling knowing that the Lions will have most of their roster return next year, most of the time us Lions fans have to learn about 30-35 new players.

Free Agency:

- Running back: Cedric Benson or Micheal Bush. (We need a power back to compliment Best and Morris, I think KSmith is gonna be cut/released)

- Wide Receiver: James Jones or Braylon Edwards (May be too pricey for Edwards, but both should be free agents since their team can't afford them)

- Offensive Guard: Alan Faneca or Ryan Kalil. (Peterman is a bum and a big ugly veteran is needed to open up some holes)

- Defensive End: Cliff Avril (Re-sign)

- Linebacker: Chad Greenway and Mike Peterson (Both are needed, Greenway should be the #1 free agent target.)

- Cornerback: Carlos Rogers. (He may be fed up with the changes going on in Washington, could be a huge pick up)

Draft:

1st round. OLB, Akeem Ayers UCLA or Von Miller TEXAS A&M

2nd round. CB, Brandon Burton UTAH or Curtis Brown TEXAS

3rd round. BPA. Clint Boling, OT, GEORGIA or Justin Boren, OG, Mich/OSU

4th round. BPA, DeAndre McDaniel,S, CLEMSON. or  Tyler Sash, SS, IOWA

5th round. BPA, OLB/DE- Dontay Moch NEV (Kid runs a 4.25 as a LB/DE) or CB, Chimdi Chekwa, OSU

6th round. BPA, Steve Schilling, OG, MICH or  Ronald Johnson, WR, USC

7th round. BPA

Starters (Backup):

QB - Stafford (Hill)

RB - Best (Benson/Bush)

WR - 1. C.Johnson (Jones)  2. Burleson (B.Johnson)

TE - Pettigrew (Scheffler)

LT - Backus (Boling)

LG - Sims (Schilling)

C - Raiola (Gandy)

RG - Faneca (Peterman or FA signing)

RT - Cherlius (Hilliard)

Defense

SSDE - Vanden Bosch (McBride)

DT - Corey Williams (Hill)

DT - Ndamukong Suh (Fluellan)

WSDE - Avril (Jackson)

SOLB- Greenway (Palmer)

MLB - Levy (M.Peterson)

WOLB - Ayers (Carpenter)

1CB - Rogers (Burton/Spievey)

2CB - Houston (Smith/Berry)

FS - Delmas (Phillips/Spievey)

SS - McDaniel/Sash (Wendling)

PR/KR - Logan

K - Hanson/ Rayner (matters if Hanson is healthy or retires)

P - Harris

Looks like a NFC North Championship Roster to me.

Ok I don't like most of this but here is what I do like

1st let me start off with a big no on Benson..One good season does not make him worth it Bush or McClain then you got my attention, I like the addition of Greenway even though I’d prfer Harris I think Greenway is more likely to come to detroit. Carlos rogers not a name I have heard yet but I could easily get behind that. Edwards wouldn’t be bad but I just don’t see mayhew going that route. I think we will be looking for a slot reciver like Breaston and not someone to move Nate in. Nate has been to good to make him number 3. Avril is a given are offseason is a failure if we lose him IMO.
Not to crazy about the draft either.
Also we need a gaurd Faneca is to old and nowere near his old self…Pass.

The players are buying in and we have a bright future- (The Pain Train) Zack Follett.

Done ok this year

But I think alot of people are still high on him from the previous season..He’s not even close to that. To many Chicago games still concern me on Benson.

I prefer to look at like Greenway has a shot at the Lions

People can see the Lions are a team on the rise he should feel privilaged to play for them.
He is the perfect replacement for JP

I thought being lazy was a bad thing, So I gave up thinking.

CJ81, BEST and SUH to the PRO BOWL....

by SmittyJ on Jan 5, 2011 10:46 AM EST up reply actions

We have a shot at Greenway because...

we just freed up about $8.5 million from our cap by dropping Peterson and Dizon. His salary last season was a bit over one million dollars. I think the Lions have the potential cash to get him. Add in the fact that Minnesota now needs more pieces to become competitive than the Lions and Greenway might decide the Lions are a better bet to win in the future. Add in that the Lions get to play indoors in the winter and the Vikings will have to play at University of Minnesota stadium and that might have some weight. Add in that the Lions have some of the very best facilities in the NFL and that might have some weight. Add in that the Lions are legendary in the NFL for how well they treat their players, though Schwartz has toned back some of the perks.

Every report I have seen indicates that Greenway is going to test the market. If the Lions target him like they did KVB and Nate last year it is quite possible they will hand him an excellent offer as soon as the free agency period begins. I think in the end that Chad Greenway knows this is a business and his primary responsibility is to take care of his family.

by TuffLynx on Jan 5, 2011 10:17 PM EST up reply actions

The Dizon whacking means to me that.

SchwartzHew plan on seriously upgrading this off season like they did the D-line last season. They plan on bringing in some talent instead of hanging on to a fringe player.

The only legend around here is the one that exists in your own mind.

by delusional on Jan 6, 2011 1:29 AM EST up reply actions

Exactly...

I think the Lions will be targeting guys that fill holes for the long term. They want guys that will come in and make an impact like KVB and Nate have done. We have to believe that the guys they target will be in free agency will be playing one of the positions we need to fill. Greenway fits that description. The Lions might not get him, but that is not going to be because they didn’t try.

by TuffLynx on Jan 6, 2011 9:53 AM EST up reply actions

You still have Bryant Johnson on this starting roster? .

………

Its almost the off season, Lets the madness begin!!

by Lionsfan8 on Jan 4, 2011 11:46 PM EST reply actions

BJ has one more year on his contract.

Until the Lions choose to cut him he will stay on the roster.

by TuffLynx on Jan 5, 2011 10:19 PM EST up reply actions

To no one inparticular, but I notice a lot of hasbeen names being thrown around on these threads.

As desperate needs, or must signs.

We are well past the days of having to sign 33-34 year olds to fill critical positions and play major rolls on the team. Vanden Bosch was a different situation and last off season we had different needs. But to keep pitching out ancient veterans as must signs is silly. That’s a Millen gimmick that we don’t need to do around here any longer.

The only legend around here is the one that exists in your own mind.

by delusional on Jan 5, 2011 9:31 AM EST reply actions

I agree totally.

And i’d go further on the age… 29+ to filll critical positions and major roll fillers.

Keep drafting and keep pumping the waiver for other teams’ draft mistakes.

Take Carpenter… Draft mistake
Phonz… draft mistake
Palmer… draft mistake

all depth on this roster now….

by CLF on Jan 5, 2011 12:28 PM EST up reply actions

Palmer

wasn’t a draft mistake really since he wasn’t drafted. :))

WTF Ever...

Did you get my point?

by CLF on Jan 5, 2011 2:01 PM EST up reply actions

100% CLF

Justan I think you missed the point. CLF is saying the WE have to keep scrubbing the waiver wires, or work out cheap trades for other teams draft mistakes. I wholeheartedly agree.

I just have seen a lot of 30+ year old name players being thrown around as needed, and were past that point.

The only legend around here is the one that exists in your own mind.

by delusional on Jan 5, 2011 2:53 PM EST up reply actions

I didn't miss the point

It was just meant as a tonque in cheek sorta smartass reply not meant to be taken all that seriously.
Of course we should be doing all those things plus if a 30 plus year old guy can fill a hole he should be considered. Hell if, Lord willing, we ever get to be a SB team we should still be doing all those things.

wouldn't call phonz a draft mistake

More of a coach mistake they didn’t give him time or proper coaching..I think we are gonna save his career..You can tag this as me just loving Phonz but I really do belive he will be a great corner in the NFL.

by The Profiler on Jan 5, 2011 5:24 PM EST up reply actions

He didn't fit in Denver...

and they drafted him #1? then traded him for a…. 5?

Yeah, that’s my point right there.

by CLF on Jan 5, 2011 7:03 PM EST up reply actions

I read at as more of a "Bust" type Mistake

My bad I think your just saying bad fit

by The Profiler on Jan 5, 2011 7:07 PM EST up reply actions

Not #1

He was a second round pick. But still see your point.

just pass me the damn ball

by Christopher Moriarty on Jan 5, 2011 7:22 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

I agree with you on the aging vets

loo, the four game winning streak has been because of our young talent. granted a little veteran leadership sprinkled in is a bonus, but Carlos Rodger? I believe he has one of the highest completion percentages in the NFL. he does have some picks granted, four of them came against the Redskins, where it was Cutler’s EGO getting in the way of smart football. from what I’ve heard he is not the type of veteran leadership that Detroit needs any way.

by Rob fisher on Jan 5, 2011 9:47 AM EST reply actions

Clarification

It was Deangelo Hall who got the 4 picks, against the Bears (not Redskins), and is known as a risk-taking CB. Carlos Rogers is only 29, a 1st round pick in 2005 (9th overall), and has been a solid contributor, albeit with an injury history

by BigSlim05 on Jan 5, 2011 11:18 AM EST up reply actions

right on! got em mixed up,

still I think there might be a better corner out there for us, I’d take the Champ with his age over Rodgers, although from what is being said he wants to move to safety

by Rob fisher on Jan 11, 2011 8:20 AM EST up reply actions

Chekwa there in the 5th seems unlikley but would be a great pick

I don’t think we get greenway… I will be surprised of our LB Crew next year is anyone other than Palmer, Levy and Carpenter and honestly I don’t hate that…

All men are created equal. Its just that some men are more equal than others....

by CapitolLions on Jan 5, 2011 10:18 AM EST reply actions

U know what

Carlos Rodgers is a clone of Antrel Rolle hes a good tackler and we sign him we should move him to that other safety posistion

by LIONSNJ90 on Jan 5, 2011 11:07 AM EST reply actions

I know I'm buggin

But I’ll make a run a Champ Bailey

by LIONSNJ90 on Jan 5, 2011 11:10 AM EST reply actions

Champ who?

You mean Boss Bailey’s brother?
You know Boss, the guy that couldn’t wait to get out of Detroit?
Do we think that Champ and Boss might talk to each other?
Hmm, I wonder shat Boss had to say? Bet is wasn’t very good.

by TuffLynx on Jan 5, 2011 10:24 PM EST up reply actions

idk why

why didnt they cut smith this year all he does when he runs the ball is run into the blockers cus he cant make cuts only time he does anything is when theres a hole in front of him.
its like hes a 240 fb that just runs straight lines and cant make ppl miss and hes not very heavy and cant break tackles either

by Daniel Simonelli on Jan 8, 2011 3:14 PM EST reply actions

but ya

i agree on this topic one the main things we need is a beast rg to help in the run game, and a real power back not a fake we really need quailty at the o-line cus with ppl gettin old and others lookin not so hot it could change are offense alone by making blocks
