Rb for thought ?
Sorry for the inconvenience here as far as where I got this idea from but just to give a quick reference to it, early this morning I happen to read some side articles over on the CBS sports page and one of them had a particular side story about possible grumblings in Cincinnati dealing w/ Cedric Benson. Now before totally dismissing this I thought about this as I sat here watching the playoffs and came on reading about the deal w/ Asomugha's contract void. And while many will probably focus on him and the idea of their team landing him, I thought about one of those needs that the Lions have that needs to be filled but doesn't have to be filled by some stud player but rather a situational player as Best right now is still being given the keys to RB situation in terms of him being part of the Long term future of what this team assembles.
Now to go a little more in depth and summarize on what the article spoke of was the fact that Benson behind his OC and the Bengals line, season before this, had racked up 1200 yds on the season as well as leading them to that AFC division title and this season they played more from the pass, and his carries went too far down. I read around on some of the fan sites and noticed that there was a sense of sympathy for him from the fans because they know it too, anyhow add that to their current record as well as the team being disgruntled, unfocused and not headed in right direction possibly and the thought that if his OC stays too pass happy he wouldnt want to stay anyways and you kind of seeing where this is going. He's unrestricted this year and could choose not to resign.
I know what your going to say .... "But we are a pass happy team' ... well yea in retrospect but Detroit also needs to establish a ground game, need someone that can move piles and can also be used in 3rd and short where they havent been consistent and doesn't have to be super long term while Best learns and stuns replays over the next couple of years as he matures. Not to mention I'm sure in some ways they want to rely on the run more w/ someone who is solid between the tackles. Well thats where Benson can come in and he started in the NFC north can play cold weather games and knows the division a vet that can be gotten on a smaller contract and come in and compete for a starting spot pushing Best and Morris, notice i didnt say Smith, w/ Logan coming in for those trick plays or speed plays giving Best a rest if needed ....In order for Matt to stay upright i do believe some sort of a semi respectable ground game needs to be established and a name needs to be established behind that run game, as it will take the pressure off of Matt and not force him to pass as much, as well as keep the defense guessing a little more. I do think there's enough room on Detroits running back roster for a player like this, whether or not he would be the answer would be left to the football field and any given Sunday. Your thoughts ?

Don't like Benson
Maybe I seen to many Bears games or maybe his other issues in the past cloud my judgment but I just don’t like him all that much. He had one great season and a second OK season..I need more than that from a guy who was all but a HUGE bust.
The players are buying in and we have a bright future- (The Pain Train) Zack Follett.
Me either...
Not worth the money he will demand
I would rather a middle level big back…. Brian Leonard, Pat Cobb a mid round rookie… something. I don’t want to spend a bunch of money on a position that isn’t really hurting… Best and Mo are fine IMO

I think the draft is the answer
it’s not hard to find a productive late round Back in the draft, particularly when you don’t need one with 4.4 speed.
Good rookie examples from this year:
LeGarrette Blount, James Starks, Deji Karim… we can definitely find a solid back in the later rounds.
James Startks is something
He was one of the best backs in NCAA his junior year… senior year, sat out with injury. I couldn’t believe he lasted as long as he did in the draft.

So is Blount
who managed to go undrafted and whom with I was pretty upset that we didn’t use a seventh round pick on. Sumbitch.
Yea.. one had character issues and one had injuries...
Lots of dudes go undrafted for those reasons lol

It's hard to spend a lot of money on the position
when we have top dollars going to Best and how can you be so sure Benson would be more effective than K Smooth or Morris behind this line? Benson couldn’t do anything in Chicago and they had a line more like we have here (as far as run blocking is concerned). Just too risky in my mind. I think we need a guy who just straight up knocks people over and gets 2-3 yards on his own consistently (ala McClain). I agree the run game is HUGE for Matt and establishing the O Linney has designed. But I think we need to first see if K Smith is back to form (he was looking better than Best and Morris right before his thumb injury) and if he’s not going to cut it, pick up a power back still available (too bad we missed out on Lynch).

im either crazy or have amnesia
But we already tried the Benson thing. And if I remember correctly he stunk bitched about everything and we dropped him. And I believe the break up was less than cordial. am I forgetting something?

The draft
This team seems to want to build from the draft and I can’t blame them. The only veteran back I would keep is momo. I wouldnt mind if we drafted Ingram with our first pick and traded KS. I know that would piss some of you off, but he has had 3 years to prove himself and Ingram and Best would be a heck of a tandem!
Not even about Ksmoove
I don’t wanna blow a first round pick on a back with that many miles on the odemeter. Like I have said before he will be good but for how long. I see Ingrams career in college and I keep thinking of Shaun Alexander. I’d rather make a run at McClain a proven player with more tread on his tires.

I can understand the lure of Ingram
He certainly looks like he’d have the biggest impact as a rookie taken at 13, but that’s so much money to put into that position (due to Best). Smith didn’t have 3 years, he had 2 years – because the coaches didn’t feel he was healthy enough (though they kept playing Best for nought…). I have a feeling the coaches are not big on Smith, but they owe it to him to see what he can do this summer. I thought he actually looked better than Best and Morris in the brief time he had (there were like 2 game they actually gave him opportunities and he had a higher y.p.c than the others). – and it was clear he wasn’t full recovered from acl nor could have the same power with a bum shoulder…let’s see what he can do before we usher him out the door, because I don’t think we’ll get good value in a trade until he shows everyone he’s back in top form…

Yard per carry
Dont get fooled by his 1200 yard season. Look at his lifetime yards per carry. Its under 4. We have a guy like that in Smith. Benson alsu struggles with blocking and blitz assignments.

+1
Kevin smith is a better back than Benson, no question.

To be honest, I'd rather have Best have another go at it
Hopefully fully healthy. Morris and Smith can spell him regularly. If that doesn’t work out, look for another back the season after.
RIP Robyn Bailey 1961 - 2010. I love you mum.
