Lions Notes: Jason Hanson Named NFC Special Teams Player Of The Month
- After going perfect on field goals and extra points in the month of September, Jason Hanson was named the NFC Special Teams Player of the Month earlier this week.
- Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said this week that Calvin Johnson is "arguably the best player in the National Football League."
- Speaking of Johnson, he didn't know he is only two touchdown catches on Sunday away from tying a record for consecutive two-touchdown games that is currently held by Cris Carter.
- Gunther Cunningham described Carter's comments about Johnson as the "dumbest statement I've ever heard."
- Sirius NFL Radio had Jim Schwartz and Johnson on for interviews this week.
- Jahvid Best and Nate Burleson appeared on NFL Network this week.
- The Detroit Douglass football team had some of their equipment stolen last week. To help the players get ready for their next game, Ndamukong Suh and Best donated helmets and cleats to the team.
- Schwartz reportedly chewed out the special teams unit on Friday. Hopefully this lights a fire under them and eliminates the inconsistent play we saw during the first three weeks of the season.
- Justin Durant suffered the second concussion of his career on the final punt of the Vikings game.
- Troy Aikman thinks this year's Lions team looks quite a bit like his 1991 Cowboys team.
- According to Tim Twentyman, the Lions have never won five straight road games. That would change with a win on Sunday.
- Vikings linebacker Chad Greenway was fined $7,500 for a horse collar tackle that happened against the Lions.
- The Buccaneers finally snapped their streak of blackouts.

While he's probably not the best player in the NFL
He’s probably the most physically gifted.
Yes, I really am that great.
Vernon Davis gives him a run for his money.
"You've got to respect your opponent, no matter who it is. You respect him best by going out there and beating him up." - Calvin Johnson
I've had this discussion before, but
It was Calvin vs. Jermichael Finley. It basically comes down to Calvin being the size of a TE with the athleticism of an elite WR. I’m not going to take anything away from Davis, he’s a great athlete, but Calvin is a once in a lifetime athlete.
Yes, I really am that great.
Yeah but Vernon Davis is the size of a DE with the athleticism of an elite WR, lol.
Under 4.40 speed, a 42 inch vertical, 33 repetitions on the bench, a 10’8" broad jump… CJ’s got the straight-line speed but he’s a gazelle runner, gets it going in long strides.
Vernon is absolutely in that class of athlete — but CJ’s a heck of a lot smarter.
"You've got to respect your opponent, no matter who it is. You respect him best by going out there and beating him up." - Calvin Johnson
To think there was any question
As to whether or not Hanson would make the team this year. He’s been lights out for Detroit, even in high pressure situations. This is a guy who has been around for all the bad years, if anybody deserves to see the Lions win, it’s him.
Yes, I really am that great.
Chad Greenway
Does the NFL actually review any penalties are just hand them out without any doubt the refs made the right call?
It shouldn't even be a penalty
And they fine him on top of that. The NFL is getting ridiculous
The penalty was iffy.
His hand was around the backside and the horsecollar rule does prohibit horsecollaring from the inside of the shoulder pads (i.e. from the side). It was a reasonable game-time penalty that could have gone either way.
But absolutely, the fact that it was fined is a joke.
"You've got to respect your opponent, no matter who it is. You respect him best by going out there and beating him up." - Calvin Johnson
The rule is very specific
and is designed to save players knees. You can not tackle a player from the back or side by dragging them down by the collar. If he had grabbed and let it go, the penalty probably would have not been called and he most certainly would not have been fined. He dragged him down by the collar from the side. That tackle is written into the rule specifically. It is not allowed and was a clear penalty and fine able offense.
We need a damn rule book around here. When did football get so damn complicated, a fan needed that to follow the game?

Like I said, it was a reasonable penalty.
And by extension, fine-able, because they’ll fine anything. But not all penalties should be fined, and IMO that shouldn’t have been.

It must be a combined school after a couple of HS closed. Damn shame when they can’t even play on their own field due to maintenance issues.

How bout those ryans Eh? Never know when to shut up. Its one thing to promote your receivers. It’s a whole other thing to contradict your own head coach in valuation of a player. Cj is better than witten and Bryant and everyone knows that….. Except maybe cris Carter.

I'm sorry but the greenway horsecollar is not worth a fine.
He pulled Pettigrew down from the side of the shoulder pads, technically still a horsecollar but not malicious enough for a 7500 fine.

Though it doesn’t seem like he cares either way about attention. I think he just wants to focus on the game, stardom is secondary to him.

well, I can remember when Eddie Murray kicked before Jason Hanson! Also, I wondered how Eddie Murray could be the kicker for the Lions and play 1st base for the Baltimore Orioles on the same weekend! When we’re kids, it’s funny how dumb we are sometimes. Anyway, congrats to Jason Hanson, he’s a legend!

Ndamukong Suh day by day has not only become a historic figure of Lions football
He is becoming the pride and role model for a city that really needs more of those. I can’t say enough how proud I am that Suh is a Lion. not to make a comparrison but in alot of ways he is OUR Reggie White.

I think he has a chance to be up there with those guys
He is far from there yet and it might just end up being his second contract that pushes him over the hump. I mean, He is so good. The only thing that seems like it could stop him from potentially being named along side those guys is if he does or does not sign with us after his first contract is up.

Yeah I saw that.
It’s just wrong. The world is way to pc these days. Poor kid. He is taking it like a champ, too.
Did you guys see the size of that chicken?
“The other players on both teams, 21 are just left sort of, this is all Demias,” she said. “So that’s why the Madre Hill Rule has been implemented.”
These are kids out there. They are playing the game for fun. If one kid is so far ahead of everyone else that he takes the fun of the game away but you can’t move him up to the next level, than I see no problem with that at all.
Sometimes, I think we forget what sports really are all about. Playing on a team, getting everyone involved (even that one nonathletic kid whose dad insists he play), letting the entire team win and lose together, camaraderie, friendship, learning to cooperate with others.
7 years old kids should not be on a football field, for either team, while one of them who has clearly developed sooner than the others is doing all the work. That is not what being on a team is all about. Not at that age.

On a completely different topic..
Cowboys claiming they have more talent than the Lions (just a sample size)
Pro-bowlers (predictions)
Lions:
Locks: Suh, Johnson.
Maybe: Stafford, Hanson, Pettigrew
Outside chance: KVB, Avril, Houston
Cowboys:
Locks: Ware, Austin
Maybe: Romo, Witten
Outside chance: Lee, Spencer, Bryant
This is looking at it objectively with a doxa spin. That is, if I were I cowboys fan looking at this “objectively” a would say Austin is a lock lol. Even though Stafford is destroying Romo in stats I give them an equal shot at the pro-bowl. Witten and Pettigrew are about even so far. Lastly, Lee and Houston are both off to fast starts but how long can they keep this up?
I’ve noticed a lot off “who have you gone against?” Absolutely does not matter. I would never use the argument “we have the longest winning streak in the NFL.” That’s fallacious. Let me break it down for you. In order to use “who have you gone against?” argument you would have to assume the premises “all the teams we beat are worse than the Cowboys” and also “all teams we beat will lose to the Cowboys” and “the teams the Cowboys beat will never lose to teams that beat the Cowboys.” Considering the possible combinations of games this has never happened in the NFL.
Good luck Cowboys, no grudge here against you guys.
I could see Tulloch possibly making it

I hate the fact...
Nobody ever questions the validity of Andrew or Fitz but yeah lets all hate on Calvin cause he plays for the Lions. It’s irritating the guy literally does nothing to deserve this. Unless you count umm honoring your contract, being a pro in every sense of the word, & producing on the field. Rob Ryan is an idiot just like his brother. Did any Lions fan or faculty say something like that to Demarcus Ware this week?
