49ers vs. Lions: Niners Nation Q&A
Hey guys, this is Fooch from Niners Nation. It's been a long time since both our teams were consistently good, so maybe things are back on the upswing in the Bay area and the Motor City. While I'm solely a 49ers fan, I have enjoyed seeing the talent Detroit is putting on the field week in and week out. It's hard not to be entertained by Calvin Johnson, Ndamukong Suh, Jahvid Best, and so many more.
Our two teams last met in 2009 and the 49ers have actually won the last seven contests between the two. I'll enjoy that record in the abstract, but this year's Detroit team is nothing like some of the previous Detroit teams, so previous wins and losses mean nothing. But I had to mention it!
Each week I've set up a FanPost at the opposing team's blog so you guys can ask any questions you might have about the 49ers. I believe that the more we know about the opposing team, the more we can enjoy the game on a slightly more detailed level. Some disagree, so it's not for everyone.
I'll post a link to this thread over at Niners Nation as well and get some of NN's readers over to help answer questions. I'll jump in as well, but I won't begin to pretend I know more than anybody else about the 49ers.
This thread is primarily for learning more about the team, but smack talk is not discouraged. Let's just try and keep things civil heading into the game and have a good time.
One of your guys set up a FanPost at Niners Nation. If you want to join in the comments, the registration comes with a one-day wait period. Post a comment in here that you've joined and I'll waive the wait period.
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Pride of Detroit or its writers. FanPosts are valued expressions of opinion by passionate and knowledgeable fans.

They deleted a bunch of our guys comments on their site that were purely football related comments or questions. Nothing out of the line, just football talk. Apparently you have to live chicago bears to post a comment on their site.
yeah they are
I ran into that problem way back we weren’t even playing them. I was talking about Walter Payton how great he was. All positive stuff apperently I didn’t follow protocal lol.

We generally try to avoid hiding comments, but the two main site rules that’ll get comments hidden and you warned: 1) swearing outside of game threads and 2) personal attacks. It’s pretty straight forward. Things might get a little testy at times, but not too awful.

For a very polite explanation to one poster why it is my opinion that the way he goes about reasoning is faulty.

Lion fans=12th man
Welcome 49er fans! Congrats on the start to a successful season. Operating out of the NFC West, without question, you guys should have the division wrapped up, by the time the North is facing some seperation from co-leadership in our division. A loss in Detroit Sunday isn’t going to change that either.
There is no question that Lions fans think we have a pretty good team; BEST I’ve seen in my over 5 decades of being one, and after all the stinkers, the first one I believe in. Detroit is the best sports town in the country, and we love our Red Wings, Tigers, and Pistons too, who have brought the fans many championships. All that aside, Detroit is a football town. If we had to choose a SuperBowl over a Worlld Series, Stanley Cup final, or NBA Championship, must of us would pick a SuperBowl; regardless of the majority of us never experiencing the feeling of the Lions reigning as Kings of football.
I’m not sure where Jim Schwartz grew up, but not only is he the best Lions’ coach I’ve seen, but he understands what professional football means to us; he observes, he feels, he is caught up in it… he gives credit where credit is due. Not only are the Lions’ brass building a playoff team, they are intent on building a dynasty; our prayers are being answered. As Schwartz says, “a lot of work still needs to be done.” At his post-game press conference, the first thing that he attributed to the victory over the Bears, was THE FANS ; he has the wisdom to know that we are all a part of it, and that there will be days when the 12th man will be needed to lift the spirits of the team… we are all there this season, and it’s only beginning. I’m sure whenever this era of Lion history ends, there will most likely be an annual NFL trophy awarded for excellence, and it will be called “THE SCHWARTZ!”
Jim Harbaugh is doing a wonderful job with the 49ers, and we love him too! It is because of his days are a hero in this town in the past, that most of us don’t wish to see a spanking laid on San Francisco, but if that ends up being the case, so be it; we’ll get over it, and still love Harbaugh. I know that Ford Field is going to be more jacked that it was last Monday, and as tough as the factors of Calvin being unstoppable, and Suh being the heat of the pressurer cooker, the 49ers will have less of an answer for THE 12TH MAN… the straw that stirs this toxic concoction, which our Defense is going to pour down your throats. It matters little who you are, or what you’ve done… the pieces are coming together with this team, we’re still adding more, and we got their backs; NOBODY is going to get a “W” in our crib this season!
This should be a closely fought game… The Lions are going to put a lickin’ on San Francisco, and they will limp outta town. After their rushing game is managed, AleX is gonna be running for his life and caught; the 49ers will know what it’s like to be dominated. A 10th DL has been added to the roster this week, and we have nothing to worry about as far as throwing deep on the Lions; that’s not Smith’s thing; neither is his attempts, passing TDs, and passing yardage, nor your defense against a real passing game. Welcome to a superior passing game vs. a sub-standard pass defense. BTW… we’re not worried about a dinky-doo passing game vs. an equally superior pass defense, which will be ready for those midget stats. Turn-over mistakes haven’t been the 49ers thing either, but a nasty Suh, Fairley Nasty & Co. will force them this week. Meanwhile, Stafford isn’t going to fool around the 1st quarter this week. You know about Calvin, and you will experience Titus Young and Brandon Pettigrew. I see more emphasis on the running game into the scheme this week, to set up a few bombs, to give our Defense the liberty to go into Destroy Mode. Popularity with a new Vegas line will grow… Over & Under False Starts at Ford Field; bet on the Over.
I’m not going to predict a blow-out, but it could happen…

P.s. I like these fan exchanges
Like you said keep it classy but no need to make it a kiss ass fest either lol.
Ok So niners questions
1. Alex Smith, Is the fan base rejuvinated about him now that he is playing well? Waiting for him to flop or is the entire niner nation ready to move on? Alex has looked like what he was suppose to be as of late he has impressed me.
2 I gotta know about Mike. I thought Singletary was a very good coach just my opinion players seem to respect him and play hard. Vernon Davis is a new man after playing for Mike. Did Singletary get a raw deal or did the fans really blame him for the collapse last season?
3. Crabtree Bust? or just a product of the system?
I like Harbaugh even though I wanted him to come to U of M he is a good coach. Seems like it was hard for the Niners to find someone that satisfied them after they fired Mooch. I really think you have found you " Jim Schwartz" even though he may not be THAT good lol. I expect SF to put up a fight for us even more so that the Bears did. Patrick Willis in my mind is only behind Ray Lewis and Brian Urlacher. Guys a beast.

I'll give it a try
1. I personally, always supported Alex Smith, through the thick and thin. The large majority of the fan base wanted to trade for Kolb during the offseason (yuck) and some realized keeping Smith would be good considering the lockout. Currently, I’d say 85% of the fans support him, I mean who wouldnt? We’re winning, thats what fans care about
2. The playcalling, game management, qb changing every week got on everyone’s nerve, even our little Jed. But he was fired the minute we were out of playoff contention. We were happy to get rid of him because we eventually got Jim Harbaugh.
3. Product of the system. My gosh, best hands on the team. He gets a lot of flack on Ninersnation from a few fans, but the kid is really talented. My 2nd favorite Niner. Like I said before, great hands and nice vertical as well. Hopefully you guys see how for real he really is this sunday when he goes off! haha
Not even dude, I don't know anyone on NN that wanted Kolb.

My best answers for you,
1. Alex Smith is gone. This year we’re starting a guy named AleX Smith. Seriously. AleX Smith is much more decisive with the ball and is improving each game as the play book opens more and more. Don’t forget the 49ers have a new HC, OC and DC.
2. Mike Singletary’s act wore thin pretty quickly. He came on inspiring and motivating, but that’s all he did. He had no idea how to run a team because he was never a coordinator. He was stuck with an 80’s mindset of smash mouth football and refused to adjust, or really just didn’t know how. His game plan was literally, run, run, incomplete pass, punt. He can coach your line backers, but if he’s your HC, or any form of coaching where play calling is involved, be very very afraid. After all, he did say that the QB position was not important.
3. Too early to call Crabs a bust, but also nowhere close to calling him a success. He’s missed every single pre season so far, and his first HC and OC was Singletary and Jimmy Raye. We know he’s talented, we’re just upset that it doesn’t seem like he’s put in the time to get on the same page as AleX. Again we have no proof to verify that he hasn’t put in the time, but the media portrayal of Crabs around here is not flattering. He’s got a believer in me though, hopefully things will come together as he and AleX play along side each other more. AleX and the other receivers and TE’s are usually on the same page, knowing where to adjust routes etc. With Crabs, it’s usually a wrong route. The chemistry isn’t there yet.

Some Defense questions
In my previous post I had posted some thoughts regarding players to watch out for. Now since there is a Q&A post I can now have some questions answered.
First from the stat line it appears you play the usual 3-4 with an OLB pass rushing on most downs. That is very usual for a 3-4. My question comes is who covers the TEs and RB out of the backfield. Its a match up I think will tell who wins the game IMHO. Our Defense vs your TE/RB combo and our TEs/RB combo.
Second I was surprised to see that your run defense is as strong as it shows. That is very impressive. However your pass defense looks like it has struggled until the red zone. Do you guys have some weak links in the back 4 or is it just the coverage you guys play that allows teams to eat up yards. Correct me if I am wrong on the pass defense.
No you're spot on.
Covering the TE’s and RB’s are definitely on the LBs. Depending on the play call, the defense usually rushers 1 OLB, usually Ahmad Brooks, or if they rush 2 it would be Aldon Smith and Brooks. Haralson would probably be our best OLB in coverage, but he splits time with Smith because he isn’t the greatest pass rusher. Our ILB are Patrick Willis and Navorro Bowman, Patrick Willis ran a 4.37 40 and I don’t know Bowman’s specific time but he apparently beat Willis in a sprint. So this is an extremely fast LB crew. The defense has a bend but don’t break mold, they usually stiffen up the shorter the field is because there are less holes. The secondary is definitely the weakest link on the defense, we’re still figuring it out there, but they’ve been solid the past few games, notching turnovers. Our weakest link in the secondary has to either be Goldson or our second corner, Brown. Goldson is the FS but he’s a hitter, not a ball hawk, which is why he racks up so many tackles. Brown is still fairly young and is in the line up because of injuries.

not the 2nd CB, our #1 and #2 have played very well (Houston & Wright) thus far, but our starting safety is out (well, was for MNF) and our 3rd CB while not bad, can be taken advantage of…

Willis and Bowman would cover out of the backfield on a pass read
and/or possibly the safety. We tend to concede the underneath and run/tackle. Red zone defense has been stellar. We’ll let a team march down the field and then hold them to 3 or get a turnover/stone them on 4th down.
Secondary is getting it together. Rogers has shown ability to see things on tape and/or remember from past matchups with teams and make breaks on balls. Our safeties are hitters and pretty quick to the ball. Whitner and Goldson are a great tandem back there. Culliver (rookie 3rd round pick) has speed and can cover. He’s been worked into Nickel with Spencer hurt and Brock hurt as well. I expect improvement from Cully to the point where he’s starting Nickel and possibly even outside on base downs by season’s end.
In summation: the secondary seems to be catching up with the run-defense and we’re hoping to have a top-5 overall defense by season’s end.
We're as good as we play each week, no better, no worse.

Hello Niners fans
I was wondering your guys opinion on our division, the NFC North. Do you think it’s possible that Detroit wins the division, Chicago or Minnesota somehow comes back and takes it, or do you think Green Bay will undoubtedly win it?
Also, outside of the Niners, who I think is the obvious choice for the division crown, who do you think in your division has the best chance to win it?
Btw, Vernon Davis was a beast outta Maryland and wanted Detroit to draft him #9 overall in 2006, but stupid Millen took Ernie Sims. Man, to have Davis with Pettigrew, Best, and Megatron.. Sadly only in Madden will that ever happen.

I think GB will win it
I didn’t even think that the Lions will make the playoffs in the beginning of the year. Eating my own words now but I still think GB wins it.
In our division I have to give it to the Hawks or the Cards. The Cards are 3 games behind and the Hawks are 2. Our magic number I believe is 9 so we need this win so that we can be the first team to clinch a playoff berth

I have to admit,
I had a feeling you guys had something special starting this season. You guys have even won me a few free lunches (thx). I’ve even been rooting for you all season but will need to pause for a week of course…
Packers are still favorites to win the division.
Lions are still very much in the race. Everyone else is basically out.
Pretty cut and dry, imo.
We don't need 8 in the box. We have 52 in the box.
I think Green Bay will take the division
I said at the beginning of the year that the Lions would make it to the playoffs as a wild card as long as Stafford stayed healthy. Not a lot of people believed me. It’s looking pretty promising.

maybe Lions?
I think it’s possible the Lions can take the division. GB is strong but not infallible if your def can break through and really pressure Rodgers, they might be able to split the series. I wouldn’t put it past the Bears to also split with Green bay, and that might be all it takes if you guys and they are still close towards the end of the season. I really HOPE you guys take the divison -i live in chicago and am SO tired of hearing bears this, packers that blah blah blah.
Maybe the seahawks…Highly doubt the cardinals could…I think the rams and 9ers will give the cards too many problems for them to even think about coming back and taking the division.
and the moral of the story is: Don't run against the 49ers D.
Pressure
After watching the 9ers/Bucs game, I am curious about something. I know the blowout can skew things and I haven’t yet had a chance to watch the other 9ers games.
I see no push or pressure from the 9ers D-line in base. Is that the MO that they are sending 5+ to get to the QB?
Well when you're running a 3-4 vs. a 4-3,
a lot of the pressure is going to be coming from the LBs. The only time I can think of where they only send the D Line (3) and drop everyone else back is in a super 3rd and long situation or to protect against a hail mary. It’s much tougher to rack up the gaudy D Line numbers in a 3-4. We have a very good 3-4 lineman in Justin Smith, who is coming off his second straight Pro Bowl appearance and is still a consensus super under rated guy, not just by us, but by the media and broadcasters in general.
http://www.nfl.com/videos/nfl-game-highlights/09000d5d822c9593/GameDay-49ers-vs-Eagles-highlights
If you go ahead and skip to the 3:07 mark you can see a 275 lb defensive lineman chase down Jeremy Maclin, who ran a reported 4.31 40 time, and strip the ball, sealing the game. But generally like I said, the pressure comes from the LB’s. A 3-4 lineman should be able to occupy blockers and stop the run, if you get pressure like Justin Smith or Ray McDonald, you’re going above and beyond your duties, and they’ve done that so far.

pressure from DL alone has been concerning me the past two weeks
but we’re still getting 3 sacks a game or so and the secondary is playing well. The thing is, Justin Smith demands a double on every play so there are times when a delayed blitz goes unblocked. We have great pass rushers but our base DL has mostly bull-rushers, so the pocket get’s pushed but not penetrated on passing downs.
We're as good as we play each week, no better, no worse.

Tampa's o-line is pretty good.
Not that SF has a top-notch pass rush or anything, but it should be noted.
We don't need 8 in the box. We have 52 in the box.
the OL's play, easily.
They’re coming off the ball now, even against TB’s all-star DL (Clayborn, McCoy, Price, Bowers). The scheme is good and the OL is starting to get the protections and line-calls down, work together to block the right guys. Bruce Miller, our rookie DE-turned-FB has been a big upgrade over now-injured Moran Norris, who would routinely miss a block entirely or only execute it for 1 second…sometimes even ending up on the ground, alone.

If Tampa Bay's line is all star, Detroit's is ALL UNIVERSE.
McCoy is good but injured….again, Clayborn and Bowers are rookies who have not shown much yet, Bennett is actually looking good at one DE spot, and Price is okay but has serious injury issues too. I like our nine guys; Suh, Avril, Jackson, Williams, Young, KVB, Fairley, Hill, and Fluellen.
I think Fairley is going to be getting more playing time if he looks as good as he did against the Bears.
"Filling a need doesn’t necessarily mean you’re getting a good player," said Schwartz. "It doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re getting a player that best fits; it doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re getting a player that’s better than what you have already."

On a scale of one to ten.
One being you’re facing a Junior Varsity team, with ten being you’re facing the All-70s Madden team, how concerned are you about facing the Lions?
"You've got to respect your opponent, no matter who it is. You respect him best by going out there and beating him up." - Calvin Johnson
I think the Lions are the best team we've faced thus-far.
and I think, to use my own scale of “how scary compared to the best NFL teams”, they’re a 7 or 8. The only weakness I see is that you guys don’t get going early, something that has been our M.O. as well until this season. I feel that we’ll stop the run, why not…we’ve done it 27 straight times (holding a RB to under 100 yards) including the likes of Adrian Peterson, Blount, LeSean McCoy, Steven Jackson, etc. We’re built to stop the run and give-up short passes, then clamp down in the red-zone.
The biggest fear I have is your DL, and Megatron. While our OL has greatly improved the last few weeks, Suh, Fairley, KVB, etc. are crazy hectic guys. Megatron is making jump-ball catches in triple-coverage, so how do we stop that? I think hitting Stafford early, within 3 seconds of the snap, and often is key. Make him throw passes so bad that Megatron can’t even make plays on them. Also, I expect our safeties to hit CJ hard and often too, hoping to make him even slightly tentative to go up for balls (though he doesn’t seem to ever hesitate there)
We're as good as we play each week, no better, no worse.
Follow @Tre9er
Our pass protection is top notch
We only allow sacks on 3% of passing plays, second best in the league behind Buffalo. San Francisco is allowing sacks on 9.8% of passing plays; I understand you guys don’t have a very high pass ratio, but that does not bode well considering you’re a short-passing game so you’re not taking very many long drops. I feel very good about our DL against your pass protection.
I’m not worried about you stopping the run; your main concern will be stopping the pass, which is a weakness of yours. Megatron is a tough cookie to crack and from reading many of your comments over at NN I can tell you’re sleeping hard on our other weapons (Scheffler is second rate, stuff like that). They may not have the stats, but we field five receiving weapons every down; you’ll have a hard time covering all of them consistently.
"You've got to respect your opponent, no matter who it is. You respect him best by going out there and beating him up." - Calvin Johnson
Interesting stats about percentage of plays that end in sacks
Our best pass rush has been in our 2 home games with the addtion of the crowd noise. We’ll definitely need them again against a good SF team.
not sleeping on them just that we've done a good job allowing low point totals and CJ is your best scoring weapon
We're as good as we play each week, no better, no worse.
Follow @Tre9er
also, I believe in trends
thus, through only 5 games I don’t think you can make a judgement on things such as sack rate. The current trend is on the downtick in terms of sack percentage. Smith wasn’t sacked at all on Sunday and we are hoping the OL will continue their improvement. He’s also gotten better at hot routes and audibles.
We're as good as we play each week, no better, no worse.
Follow @Tre9er
I can absolutely make a judgement on things such as sack rate.
Considering our sack rate last year was just as good and San Francisco’s was just as bad. I believe that’s what we call a “trend.”

counting last year's sack rate, with a totally different coach, coordinator, system...seems misguided
We're as good as we play each week, no better, no worse.
Follow @Tre9er
And yet why hasn't it improved?
"You've got to respect your opponent, no matter who it is. You respect him best by going out there and beating him up." - Calvin Johnson
because it takes time for a team to learn a new system, get used to playing together as an OL in a new system
there are much more facets to the protections and even run-blocks this year. Harbaugh has a complex system and demands perfection. We have a new Center and RG (as of the Philly game), too. Against TB I think they showed it’s starting to click.

We're as good as we play each week, no better, no worse.
Follow @Tre9er
I can very well say you aren't. Let's put it this way.
Alex Smith has gone sackless two games this year. In those two games, he has attempted to pass 20 and 19 times respectively.
The other three times? 24 attempts, 30 attempts, 33 attempts. Sacked 6, 5, and 3 times.
What do we know from these numbers? Every time your QB has attempted to pass more than 20 times in a game, he’s been sacked multiple times. The game against TB was the fewest pass attempts your team has taken on the year.
The only trend I see is the more you attempt to pass the less your line holds up. So, as I said, if your running game isn’t carrying you, it will not bode well.
"You've got to respect your opponent, no matter who it is. You respect him best by going out there and beating him up." - Calvin Johnson
why should we have passed more than 19 times in a 48-3 win?
You do only what you need to do. We were owning them in all phases, so why keep chucking the ball around?
Besides, when you throw a TD every 6 passes, you don’t need to pass much.
We're as good as we play each week, no better, no worse.
Follow @Tre9er
besides, when something improves, it generally has to come after it's been less-good, yes?
So no matter how bad we’ve been through 4 games, in order to improve there has to be a moment where things turn around, right? Who’s to say that wasn’t vs. TB and now we’re on the upswing?
We're as good as we play each week, no better, no worse.
Follow @Tre9er
We'll find out this Sunday, won't we?
Your quarterback is taking a sack nearly once every ten times he goes to pass. That’s astronomically bad considering how often Alex Smith goes back to pass (not very often). If your running game doesn’t carry you this game, it will not bode well.
"You've got to respect your opponent, no matter who it is. You respect him best by going out there and beating him up." - Calvin Johnson
he has survived 6 years of it
I think he can take a few more.
Californa is world PVP at it's finest.
I'm not worried about him getting injured.
I’m not one of those fans who says we’re going to break somebody’s neck or something like that for trash talk. I’m simply saying from a game perspective, if you guys have to rely on the pass (i.e. playing catchup) it will show a lot about your team on how they do.
"You've got to respect your opponent, no matter who it is. You respect him best by going out there and beating him up." - Calvin Johnson
He has been crazy good against pressure so far.
And careful with the ball. Sacks will stall drives though, so of course they will matter. No big plays to bail us out, 49rs have to drive down the field.
Should be a fun game. I think the line is about right on it. My expectation is to lose within a touchdown, but I hope 49rs surprise me.
Tampa had 10 sacks entering week 4, Detroit, by comparison, had 9.
So I think it’s safe to say TB has a decent pass-rush and if our OL continues to play well, we should limit the sacks to just a few.
We're as good as we play each week, no better, no worse.

That's a pretty big if.
"You've got to respect your opponent, no matter who it is. You respect him best by going out there and beating him up." - Calvin Johnson
Better then pure speculation.
What else one can base opinions on?
You may limit the sacks to 1-3, but the pressures and hits will be a lot more than what the sacks reflect.
The Lions have their own trend this year, of letting a QB escape a minimum of about 3 sacs a game, and against the horrible Bears line we let them escape about 6-9 of them.

Always has.
The teams that always get heralded for the “defense wins champions” (70s Steelers, 85 Bears, etc) all had good/great offenses.
The 74 Steelers were 6th in points scored, the 75 Steelers were 5th, the 78 Steelers were 5th, the 79 Steelers were first, the 85 Bears were second. Those were some amazing defenses that get a lot of credit, but their offenses were pretty damn good too.
That said, I think the portion of Baltimore that you can’t trust is their STs. Their O is performing pretty inconsistently but still has a shot to turn things around, their STs are bottom barrel.

He certainly was the driving force behind making that guy not only a team player, but also removing his liability in blocking. The 49ers are a great surprise team this year
And I’m glad to see you guys getting a successful team to cheer for. The teams seem like their first real big tests are this week. Both are 1st place teams.
The 49ers will not beat Detroit in Detroit. The crowd is our 12th man out there. I know the 49ers are good on defense and has won on the road this year, but Detroit’s defense, the passing game alongside a speedy Jahvid Best, and the fact that we have had our coach for 3 seasons now gives us the advantage in this matchup, as Vegas seems to agree.
You lost at home to Tony Romo’s Cowboys while we beat them in Dallas after trailing by 24 points. Any given Sunday I know any team can win, but with that patchwork unproven secondary of yours and our passing game, I don’t see them beat a team like the Lions.
You guys say you’re behind Alex Smith, but throughout the years that guy has been hung out to dry so much by the SF media, teammates, and fans that I think it won’t take much to rattle that guy’s confidence. Our d-line will eat Alex Smith alive just like they did Jay Cutler on Monday night. Good luck because you’re gonna need it against these undefeated Lions.

I don't think any Lions fan would argue that it had some of both
Romo imploded but the Lions defense still had to capitalize on it just like the Niners still had to capitalize on the Eagles doing the same. Neither team would have won if they had failed to execute after the sudden changes in the respective games. But its still fair to note that 14 sacks on the style of offense that the Niners seem to run is a bit concerning…

I will say this.
I am concerned about facing the 49ers. But not because of anything the 49ers do. They have a good defense and an efficient offense. I am concerned about the performance of the Lions; if the Lions show up for four quarters, they win this handily. Through five games we have been the undisputable best second half team in the league (as in, first in points scored and points allowed, league-wide). We’ve been fairly mediocre (if not bad) in first halves.
If we show up for four quarters, we are the best team in the league. It is as simple as that. My only question about that is… will we? Let’s find out this Sunday.

Is Dlions willing to bike from Detroit to SF?

I think the NE – DET comparison is a stretch at this point.
5-0 means momentum and confidence. Tangibles on the field.
Still, I’m going into this game looking at both teams as credible threats.

So, questions is, IF we beat Detroit, will this also apply?

Probably.
It will go both ways; whoever loses this game will come off as a paper tiger. Which is far from the truth on both ends.

Well, to be fair
The hardest team on your schedule to beat, the Dallas Cowboys, you guys lost to at home. We beat them in Dallas. We are undefeated, you’re not. You played 3 outta the 5 games at home and lost 1, we played 3 outta the 5 games on the road and didn’t lose. We have Suh, Megatron, and Matthew Stafford with a coaching staff that’s headed into its 3rd year, you guys have a college coach in your first year with Alex Smith.
I don’t see any where how the 49ers have an advantage over us. I am biased, but I’m also a realist and you guys played a very easy schedule with the majority of them at home. Seattle, Cincy, Philly aren’t playoff teams and we beat the Bucs and Dallas too. I can’t see a team like the 9ers, though they are pretty good right now, beating one of the only two undefeated teams on their own field. Sorry, no disrespect, if this was New Orleans or Green Bay then I’d probably be a little more skeptical of winning, but the 49ers aren’t that caliber of team…yet.

what was the score when you beat TB? Sorry, just using your logic here...
We're as good as we play each week, no better, no worse.
Follow @Tre9er
Score is irrelevant
We beat them in Tampa on a day where the temp was like 90 degrees with 75% humidity and they were basically finished in the 1st half. We played conservative in the 2nd half and let them back in it, but if you saw the game, you would see that they were finished early.
You said yourself that it takes time for things to click or gel when in a new scheme with a new coach right? Well, if you guys can’t beat Dallas at home, how do you expect to go into Detroit and beat an undefeated team? I don’t think, trying to be objective here, that the 49ers are quite where the Lions are talent wise or coaching wise. Harbaugh was a great college coach, but this is his first real big test playing an undefeated team on the road where it gets very loud, so loud that it caused Chicago to false start 9 times because thwe o-linemen couldn’t hear the cadence.
I’m sorry man, I appreciate your enthusiam and I understand where you’re coming from, but trust me, the 49ers aren’t a better team than the Lions especially not at Ford Field. You guys might pull off the upset, but it would be called an upset for a good reason.

we're 3 games further into the season than we were against Dallas
Games offer the best practice, often times. You learn more from them because of facing various opponents in real-time, real situations, etc. I think we’re growing each week and that both of these teams are more evenly matched than you think.
If both teams come to play and limit mistakes, it will be a close game.

your schedule thus-far:
narrowly beat TB (they suck since we blew them out, right?)
narrowly beat Min (they suck…because they suck)
Handily beat KC (one of worst teams in football)
reasonably beat CHI (a middling team for sure)
narrowly beat Dallas (a team that narrowly beat us in OT)
What great point were you making about how good you were based on schedule vs. ours?
We're as good as we play each week, no better, no worse.

I really wish opponents would stop saying we barely beat TB.
We handled them from wire to wire, they were completely inept. Watch that game if you can find it, you’ll understand. We went into prevent D and ball control offense for nearly the entire second half, and guys on NN have the gall to say we can’t protect a lead. El Oh El.
I’m not making the claim that your schedule is any harder or easier than ours. I’m simply pointing out that the fallacy of us “barely” beating TB is being parroted by every opponent, and it’s never been true.

Yeah, we definitely handled them
The one TD they scored in the 1st half was on the pick 6 off the unluckly deflection. 99% of the time that pass sails harmlessly out of bounds. At the end of the 3rd quarter we were up 14 (should have been 21) and had outgained them by over 200 yards.
it was closer than needed be
and another bad bounce and we could have lost the TB game
The Lions are also more games into the season, and showing improvement
in areas each week, and have yet to play their best game. The same can be said for the 49ers, although that Tampa game was pretty complete.

we tried to protect a lead against Dallas and that turned out the other way.
We were up a TD at the half, then up 21-14 in the 3rd quarter. Again, a slim lead. Dallas scored 10 in the 4th to take it to overtime. One lapse in coverage and we lost that game.

Then he decided to throw 3 horrible INTs to give the Lions the game.

We simply see matchups that favor our team; as you do yours. A bit of confidence, a home field advantage, and that’s all you need to feel good about this game if you’re a Lions fan.
I’m nervous about playing you guys. You have the ability to beat us, you’re likely our toughest opponent yet. Dallas may have something to say about that according to DVOA, but I consider you guys stronger. That said, if the Detroit Lions show up for a full four quarters as opposed to one, two, or three (we didn’t even show up for four quarters in our 48-3 blowout of KC), this is the best team in the league. Why wouldn’t I be confident?

Its just based on what I know, I believe that everything I said is true. I’m not worried to play the 49ers, I think we are the better team and we are at home. I’m not worried about Alex Smith, Vernon Davis and Frank Gore are awesome talents, but we’ve held some of the best backs in the league (Forte, AP, Blount, Charles) to a dull roar and I don’t recall any tight ends having a huge day against our defense. So, if I’m coming off arrogant I apologize, I respect you and your team, but I just don’t think based on what I’ve seen the 49ers are the better team and especially not at Ford Field.

This game will be won in the trenches! 5-0 and 4-1 don’t mean a thing on the field, you have to earn it.
Respect your opponents, they are talented and as some have previously stated, on any Sunday, anybody can beat anybody. This should be a very tough game pitting 2 young, solid and upcoming teams. The tide is turning for you guys too and congrats on that, as fans, you deserve it too.

I thought Lions fans were the most delusional fans around. Then I read comments from Niners Nation. Now all of the sudden the Niners are the best team in the league, Alex Smith is better than Stafford, Kendell Hunter is the next Barry Sanders, and the Lions have no shot of winning.
*everything above was actually read on Niners Nation. Including their rookie 4th round running back being the next Barry Sanders.
Sure thing
6 weeks ago Alex Smith was one of the biggest NFL draft busts ever. Now he has a few good weeks and you guys think he is Joe Montana.
That's how we roll.
6 weeks ago Detroit was coming off a middling 6-10 season, just like 49rs.
Seriously, though, the change in his play is very unusual. That normally does not happen. Will see how long it lasts.
Back in 2005 he was taken over Aaron Rodgers not by a complete accident. If he was not better then him (I do not think he was, it came down to personality and Nolan’s megalomania) – he was probably still a top 10 level pick. He does have talents. It did not pan out though…
Smith was put in a bad situation because of no coaching stability
having a new head coach almost every year or learn a new system with a new OC (one of the being Martz of all people) just about every year is gonna set a talented player up for failure beyond his control.
I hope Alex Smith reverts back to his old self for this Sunday and then gets it together again the rest of the way.
Happier than a pig in shit that I was wrong about Matthew Stafford since 2009!
Go Lions, Tigers, Red Wings and Pistons!
He was blessed not to play for Martz.
I think he aggravated his injury before the season on purpose that year.
He still had to try to learn that system
Martz threw Smith under the bus for his boy JT. The best thing for Alex’ career was to get hurt that season because he would’ve been killed with Martz’ playcalling
Happier than a pig in shit that I was wrong about Matthew Stafford since 2009!

Exactly.
People like to brush it off as an excuse, but it really isn’t. Playbooks change, schemes change, terminology change. He still hasn’t had a full grasp on Harbaugh’s playbook either, so we’re hoping with time, and some consistency, he’ll finally become the QB we all want him to be.

When Jim Harbaugh says "more is more" I think he is trying to say Moore is more.
playing in different schemes/ personel can hurt a quarterback
But even with change the main concern isn’t that he wasn’t a offensive power house. It was basic decision making and lack of accuracy at times… he does have alot of skill but is he mentally tough. Alex Smith has a chance to bounce back. But if i am a opposing team i am gonna look at how he responds to having to carry the team.. the better teams don’t try to throw laterals while they are being tackled in the red zone or fall apart with fumbles and mistakes…
How does he respond if the defence gives up points and doesn’t get turn overs and he is faced with having to match scores and deal with pressure?.. a very likely seniario at the moment….not saying the Lions win … just saying it is very likely that he could face that seniario of having to pass more than 19 times….
Not understanding your scheme hurts decision making.
Second guessing yourself before you throw, means inaccurate passes because your timing is off. It’s all related. Alex wasn’t sure where he was throwing because his scheme was always different. He’s never had the opportunity to master a playbook, that’s when he’s at his best, as stated by his college coach Urban Meyer.

One interesting observation from Smith himself.
In the last year scheme receivers where supposed to recognize blitz and change route. QB was supposed to also recognize that, and be sure that receivers adjusted. That did result in many f-ups.
This scheme everybody just do what they had to do and QB makes a decision. Most apparently, it works incredibly well for him against blitzing.

I will take that over a couple meaningless wins.
"Meaningless wins"
what is a “meaningless win”? you would of taken taken any win you could get last year or this year for that matter. No win is “meaningless” in the NFL
Or will our win over you guys Sunday be a meaningless win?
BOOM!~another Motown Touchdown-courtesy of Matthew Stafford
Meaningless win in this context is like a garbage time TD
It gets you nowhere, but lower in the draft pick order.
If you win on Sunday and that is the difference for going into playoffs, sure it is less meaningless.
Oh contraire mon frere
A 4 game winning streak at the end of the season helped the Lions learn how to win, something the 49 are still working on as evidenced by their collapse against a nearly crippled quarterback and a practice squad receiver.

I was talking about the 49ers too, and what they didn’t get by losing last year and what they could have got, that the Lions did, and they did not.
Ndamukong Suh - Bringing 50's football back to Motown!

Wins in garbage time of the season would have been utterly meaningless. They got a new coach out of at least one of those losses (which Alex Smith did no start).

My friend,
Alex Smith is a bust. But we have AleX Smith now. Please keep the distinction. But in all seriousness, the one’s who despise Alex and wish for him to fail, are not 49er fans. They are simply trolls that return to their cave and only come out with Alex and the 49ers lose. Most rational fans simply wish the best for our beloved franchise and want AleX to succeed. He has made vast improvements this year and we are simply appreciating it. The guy is a great human being and it is extremely saddening for all of us to see him fail, but this year, he’s made great steps towards being a good QB. We are simply proud of him and believe in him. No one is saying he’s Joe Montana. He’s AleX Smith, and no one should be forced to live in the shadow of two legends, but he came into this situation and we owe it to him to allow him to pave his own path.

Because of Jim Harbaugh, Alex is a system quarterback, much like Matt Cassell
Doing good with a system, he is not an elite talent. If Jim Harbaugh goes away, Alex Smith becomes what he was once again. There is no denying that he is playing great within his boundaries, which are set by Jim Harbaugh, and perhaps he will grow form this, but it is too soon to be crowing him. Hell in the first few games this year people still wanted his head. He has really only been playing great for a couple of games now and basically had his hand held by Frank Gore and Co. in earlier games.
Ndamukong Suh - Bringing 50's football back to Motown!
He is an elite talent.
Just his talent lies in following a system.
2 good games does not make him elite, i need more of a body of work before I crown him up in the top 7 or so of the league

Really looking forward to this game
Live out in Cali, most of my friends are Niners or Raiders fans. Both Niners and Lions “surprisingly” good teams, and I don’t have to stream the damn game two weeks in a row!
Hoping for a great game, could really do with two games that don’t make me suicidal in the first half and nuts in the second..
Admittedly the 49ers are a team I don't know much about
or see on TV, living in Eagles country and not having redzone. But I’ll put in a few q’s:
-How’s your secondary in SF? If you put your best CB on Johnson w/ safety help of course, who’s left to keep up with Young/Burleson and how does that matchup look?
-You’ve got some quick LBs; are they prone to overpursuing, such that Linehan can burn them by drawing up plays for Pettigrew and Scheffler/Heller on the play fake like we saw on Monday? If not, how would you use TEs against them?
-How’s Ted Ginn JR since week 1’s double return within a minute?
My girlfriends dad was a 49er fan but she never cared about football. Now I get to turn her into a Lions fan…mwahahaha
NFL Quarterbacks have heads. Ndamukong Suh has a problem with that.
"Suh plows through double teams like Albert Haynesworth plows through double cheeseburgers" - Enforcer
Here ya go,
1. The secondary is definitely the weakest link in the defense. Carlos Rodgers will be on CJ and while he hasn’t had a great history in that match up, he’s probably having the best year of his career this year. On Young and Burleson depends on how our current injuries work out. We lost 2 corners in Spencer and Brock, Spencer is a big might play, but if he doesn’t go, it’ll be Brown and Culliver, Brown is fairly young and is prone to mistakes and Culliver is a rookie who had a great game against TB.
2. No they are not prone to over pursuing because they have the fastest closing speed in the league and are 100% technique sound. Your best hope is to get one of the OLB into coverage or a smaller safety, because Bowman is sound in coverage but Willis is lights out.
3. Ginn has come close to taking a few to the house but other than that, he’s been solid. He’s second in the league in return yardage right now I believe, and is a great reason why the 49ers usually have good field position. Definitely worth the 5th rounder.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar,

by afrikabamboodle on Oct 12, 2011 4:56 PM EDT up reply actions
The secondary is the weakest part of the team. Our best DB is Carlos Rogers but he’s a small guy so I doubt that they have him focus primarily on Calvin. Look for Goldson (38) to shadow Calvin in hopes of delivering a big hit.
Titus Young might be the one guy that could badly expose us, small/quick WRs are our kryptonite.
Over-pursuit was a big problem last season but it seems to have been fixed this year. Patrick Willis will probably make a big mistake no more than once a year (he allowed a bad TD to Reggie Bush last year) so don’t look to fool 52.
Don’t use TEs, none of your TEs are fast enough to get any separation from our LBs, stick to using your WRs and burn the safeties.
Ted Ginn has been great all year, if he’s given room he’ll produce healthy returns.
What we've got here is a failure to communicate.

+1 Dlions....
Even the Niner’s organazation had given up on Alex Smith. The same fans blowing up my shit like they own it screaming Alex Smith this Alex Smith that were the same fans who had all but given up on him also. Now he’s had 5 decent games in 5 years and he’s the next Drew Brees. He’s done a good job of not turning the ball over i’ll give him that but by no means has he been the reason they have won ANY of their games. But wait I forgot you guys had Rogers on Megatron. The same Rogers that got torched for over 100 yards and 3 td’s last time they faced each other. Your qb gets sacked on 10% of his his dropbacks. That is dreadful!!! Your only facing the best D-line in all of football. Yes, you have Gore but he’s no Adrian Peterson. He’s not much if at all better than Forte. While I do think Gore will have a nice day and probably go well over 100 yards rushing, there is no way in hell that’s enough to beat this team right now. Especially in Detroit. There will not be ANY tougher place to play football this entire season. I’m not saying you guys suck. Your a middle of the road team with a good rb, te, and lb. That’s about it. It really must be nice to play in the absolute worst NFL division I have seen in quite some time. Go talk that shit against Seattle or someone.
"That's my quarterback man"- T.O.
Calm down Mufasa,
Can’t 49er fans be optimistic about not sucking for once? You as a Lion fan should know what sucking is really about. You’re optimistic and proud of your team, we’re optimistic and proud of our team, what do you expect? No one’s going to either thread talking about how their team is gonna get shat on, then what kinda fan would you be? :)

Its just facts I speak the truth, biased or not. Most people with credentials in the NFL world I’m sure would agree.

I do believe it's AleX.
Dunno what it means. Maybe a Niner fan could edify me? Very curious.
"You've got to respect your opponent, no matter who it is. You respect him best by going out there and beating him up." - Calvin Johnson
Alex Smith sucks
AleX Smith is his alter ego. This is an explanation from our community thread.
essentially
The last thread where we talk to our opponent’s blog started by stating that Alex Smith is horrible. This is the perception of him still outside of diehard 49er fans. To simplify, I stated that Alex Smith is gone and his new alter-ego, AleX, has replaced him. AleX is a bad mofo that will haunt you, Alex is a nice guy that loses football games. The empahsis on the X made it sound tough and I thought it sounded good. Some took it and ran with it.
<<McWagner
I like the idea of this being his Superhero-like alter-ego.
"After years of being tortured and abused by the same people he tried so hard to please, Alex Smith ventured further into the depths of his own sub-conscious. Half-hero, half-criminal; the public never knew quite what to make of Alex. Loved by some, hated by others; his detractors were vehement in their disdain, calling for this vigilante to be prosecuted once and for all – but his supporters stood by him through thick and thin… and waited.
Then, suddenly! Something tremendous and momentous and Harbendous happened! Alex Smith was handed a playbook by his newly crowned coach, Jim Harbaugh; and to this day, 49ers fans across the world wonder: what was really contained within The Playbook? The secrets of the universe? The answers to life’s most enduring questions? No one knows.
All we do know is that, upon imbibing the wisdom of The Playbook, Alex Smith was lost in the light of its awesome glory, and in his wake emerged… AleX."
to be continued…..

It doesn't make a whole lot of difference as far as the point you're making,
but if you are listing players on our team who are considered among the best at their position, you have to include Justin Smith. He is the best 3-4 DE in the league.
"Blackmail is such an ugly word. I prefer "extortion." The "X" makes it sound cool." - Bender Bending Rodriguez
Eleanor Rigby - "Greatest Song" or "The Greatest Song"?
Dobbs is some kind of Young/Smith/Roosevelt hybrid, and will absolutely ruin the NFL experience for the other 31 teams and their few fans.
Haloti Ngata?
Justin Smith is arguably up there, but Haloti is a damn manchild.
"You've got to respect your opponent, no matter who it is. You respect him best by going out there and beating him up." - Calvin Johnson
I would rather have Smith.
Experience and hustle.
Justin Smith is good, but Ngata is clearly better, I will give you Justin as the 2nd best but to think he is better than Haloti is just crazy talk
Ndamukong Suh - Bringing 50's football back to Motown!
Doesn't Ngata play NT?
I didn’t think he played end. I don’t really know, though.
I know like most Niner fans, regardless of what anybody says, you’d have a hard time convincing me to take another player of Justin Smith. We love that guy, and for very good reason.
"The Harbaughcolypse is upon us. No one in the NFL is safe"
Terrance Cody is their NT.
Ngata is a DE/NT switch but plays five tech more often than not.
"You've got to respect your opponent, no matter who it is. You respect him best by going out there and beating him up." - Calvin Johnson
Ngata is the best D-lineman in the league
Suh is the best interior, Smith is best 3-4 end and possibly best end, best 4-3 end is whoever is getting sacks at the moment
best 4-3 DE
is still Jared Allen. People just don’t talk about him anymore because his team is irrelevant.
We don't need 8 in the box. We have 52 in the box.
I disagree.
Experience and hustle do count for a lot. Not just raw athletic ability.
Ngata does not chase for that FF to seal Eagles game.
Ngata is a NT.
Justin Smith is a DE

yes he is a NT, but pound for pound Ngata is the best DL in the league, any position, including Justin Smith and Ndamukong Suh
Suh is still growing he may surpass him, Justin Smith has peaked, he has nowhere to go but down and he will never be better than Ngata. I probably put Vince Wilfolk up ahead of them too, again a NT, but both of these NT move around that line and also play DE or sometimes even 4-3 one and three techniques. Neither one of them is a pure 5 tech like Justin Smith is.
Ndamukong Suh - Bringing 50's football back to Motown!
You asked whom I would rather have on our team?
I would rather have Smith. Our NT is doing fine, but there is no replacement at DE for Smith.

Can't put it all on Maclin.
He might have made the final mistake, but there have been ton’s of mistakes made by all sorts of Eagles. Hell Andy Reid promoted Juan Castillo to be their DC, the Juan Castillo that was the O Line coach (which sucked balls) and hasn’t coached defense since high school. Ton’s of mistakes over there.

Perhaps.
I prefer Smith, but if I wasn’t a Niners fan it would probably be a more difficult decision. In any case, Smith should still be listed if we are discussing guys who are among the best in the league.
On a somewhat related, but actually quite meaningless, note, has anyone around here played Madden 2010? I had Jahvid Best in one of my franchises on that game, and I have to say, he is the best HB ever to appear in a Madden game, at least the ones that I’ve played. Just a perfect player in that game. Now, I’m not that good, I only play on the “All-Pro” difficulty, seven minute quarters with accelerated clock on, but the damage I was able to do with Best was still completely ridiculous, even considering the ease of the game. Anybody else experience this? Or have there been better HBs?

Yeah, I've heard it's better in a number of ways.
During the Thanksgiving week I’ll start-up a franchise and probably play six-eight games, maybe a full season at most, depending on how much time I have. In either case I should get a decent feel for how the game plays, what’s different, etc. I’ll probably end up getting my own copy in December, but to be honest, I can’t see how I’d have the time to play it between grad-school and the new Elder Scrolls game, so maybe I won’t get my own copy. It’ll be interesting to see what changes they’ve made to the running-game. I run the ball a lot, so any big changes could really effect my play-style.

I still need to pass Advanced Calculus I, Modern Algebra I and II, an Independent Study Math course, two Spanish courses, one Physical Education course, and one Art course, per New York State’s General Education Requirements.
This semester I’m in the following courses: Advanced Calculus I, Modern Algebra I, Spanish I, Computer Science II, Real Variables I, and Abstract Algebra I. I don’t have to attend the first two courses though, as the grade I get in those classes will just be whatever grade I get in the corresponding graduate level course.

2. If Edwards is out, do you believe you have the firepower on offense to potentially score with the Lions?
3. What’s your prediction on the final score?
I believe if the Lions D shuts down Gore and Hunter, your team really has no chance. Gore/Hunter needs to control the clock and keep the Lions offense on the sidelines. Final score: Det 38 SF 13.
And no, I’m not a SF Hater! Wish you guys all the success after this game cause I hate everyone else in your division.
Here ya go friend,
1. Braylon most likely won’t be back until the bye. We’ve heard rumors and musings about him maybe being back for Detroit, but in that case, he would most likely be rushing back early after surgery and nobody wants that.
2. He’s been out a couple weeks now and we’ve scored plenty enough to win. Ginn may not have lived up to his 1st round pick, but he has the speed to keep a defense honest, he’s also improved his hands and route running greatly this off season. We have Kyle Williams, an unknown player because this is his second year, but he’s shown amazing flashes and we’ve all been clamoring for him to get more playing time.
3. Final score, 49ers 9382 Detroit Lions 9381
Unfortunately there has to be a loser by hey, on the bright side, we broke all sorts of records together! :D

I think point about our TEs is the key one....
Delanie and Vernon can get it done, they are both faster than most receivers in the nfl. Delanie is very shifty and quick after the catch and VD is all of that and will run you over like Optimus Prime,,,,

You're not a hater
but you haven’t watched us play much apparently. We CAN win if we have to pass, i.e. Eagles. We still run, but it can be done.
It’ll be a lot close than 38-13, no matter who wins. And you must underestimate the SF Defense.
"The Harbaughcolypse is upon us. No one in the NFL is safe"
Harbaugh said there has been no sign of Frederick P. Soft. That, according to Harbaugh, is the little guy who sits on your shoulder and whispers in your ear when things are going well. In other words, there has been no indication that the 49ers’ recent success, and recent awards, have gone to their head.
That’s funny. Hopefully Frederick spent his week in Detroit.
Question: Are you guys concerned that your head coach may be schizophrenic?
Talking about imaginary men with developed personalities that talk to you is a clear cut indicator of schizophrenia. Are you worried that Harbaugh may be calling plays from another one of his imaginary friends?
Also, I don’t know that this team could ever let confidence go to their head. They have fully embraced, whether they were here or not when it happened, the fact that the Lions franchise has been worse than any other team in the past decade and one of the worst over the course of the superbowl era. When a teams fanbase has experienced that kind of futility, and the team itself embraces it and uses it as fuel for perfection, it can be an extremely powerful motivator and one that prevents players from letting success go to their head.
Of course it helps taht Stafford hasn’t really experienced success quite yet since there is always the question of his ability to stay injury free. And the other leaders of this team are some of the most soft-spoken superstars out there (CJ, Suh, Tulloch, Best)

Jim Harbaugh had damn better be crazy.
We just barely gave him a five-year contract. It would suck if we just found out now that he isn’t insane enough to coach an NFL team.

Yeah I do watch some SF games
Week 1 vs Seattle, Ginn takes 2 to the house in the 4th Qtr. Smith can’t throw, Gore can’t run, but your D/ST commands the game. You guys win a relatively close game minus the Ginn plays.
Week 2 vs Cowboys. Smith efficient, but not great, throws for less than 200 yds again, Running game non factor again. D lets boys back in the game, and ultimately lose in OT.
Week 3 vs Bengals. Smith efficient, but no Tds and throws for just 201. Running game a non factor again. D shows up and you guys win another squeaker.
Week 4 vs Philly. Smith efficient and productive, but so was the running game. Which allows Smith to be good. D makes Philly make mistakes, but e1s D makes Philly turnover prone.
Last week vs TB. Smith efficient, run game was productive, and D was outstanding again. But I see a trend, which happens to a lot of teams, when the running game is on the QB is more productive.
So, when I asked about the firepower, I believe I was correct in my assessment. If the Lions shut down Gore/Hunter it is not inaccurate to say your team could have trouble putting up points.
Furthermore, SF’s D is really good. My prediction doesn’t reflect the Lions O scoring all those points. I believe the Lions get ahead and force you guys into being 1 dimensional. This could lead into some sack/fumbles/ints causing the game to be more lopsided than it should.
Great assessment jeremy
I to caught 2 of those games and while they are playing much better they have a ways to go yet.
Although I think this will be a good tough game for us and think the 49’s will keep improving as the year goes on.
BOOM!~another Motown Touchdown-courtesy of Matthew Stafford
That said...you could look at our first 5 games and come to similar conclusions:
Game 1: Stafford to CJ connection was there, but running game was not. Defense was solid forcing turnovers, d-line “under-produced” to expectations.
Game 2: Stafford was highly effective and productive across all receivers, running game was a non-factor, and defense was solid across the board.
Game 3: Terrible offense in the first half followed by spectacular offense in the 2nd half. Same goes for defense. Running game still a non-factor.
Game 4: Terrible offense and defense in first half, followed by epic turn-around in second half. Running game still a non-factor.
Game 5: Little consistency to offense but big plays were there. Run game came alive in large part due to 2 great runs by Best that accounted for 130 of his total rushing yards. Defense played great.
There are +/- to every game that each team has played. Even if you go deeper and look at point differential, both teams are so high up on that list because of 1 game in particular (the Lions against the Chiefs and the Niners against the Bucs).
That said, I like the Lions chances in this game simply because they’re playing better at home. Our defense has held teams to 8 points a game in 2 home games this year while giving up 24 points on the road. Given how loud the crowd was on Monday night (and I expect the same on Sunday), I think its reasonable to expect another beatdown from our defense. That brings us to offenses. The fact that we have 2 players on our team that on any play can score certainly helps us out a lot.

I strongly suspect
that first two game our O line was up to the scheme.
In fact, Snyder explicitly admitted that when asked about what made them play better in subsequent games.
Hard to make any assessments when so much had been in flux.
A lot of the sacks had been because of unblocked blockers
Snyder over Chilo has been a huge upgrade

Another one
Smith has been playing pretty well, but is under a 1yr contract, correct?
Do you see him finally being your guys franchise QB or do you think Kaepernick will take over? If so, what is your guys assessment on Kaepernick?
I wish Kaep cleans up that wind-up
And does not try to decleat receivers with every throw.
But I am looking forward to see him play. In a couple years, hopefully. ;)
Kaep needs time to develop definitely
And it Alex keeps playing the way he is for the rest of the season, I would love to resign him. That’s not the opinion of all Niner fans, tho.
"The Harbaughcolypse is upon us. No one in the NFL is safe"
Yes 1 year contract.
Depending on how well he finishes out the season, he’ll be extended, (I hope.)
I honestly think Smith can be our franchise QB. I’ve supported him day 1 and will support him to the end. He’s made it a lot easier to support him this year though :P
Kaep is not ready to be a NFL QB. During the TB game, he made some nice throws, but still hasn’t grasped the pro offense. He would mess simple things up like turning the wrong way during handoffs. Does he have a future in the league? Absolutely. Will he succeed if he was turned loose tomorrow? Most likely probably nope.

9er fans have been good
i’m a believer that most of alex Smiths problems come from the coaching and system shuffle thats been the routine out in SF. these 9ers have a good corps of players and JH is a damn good coach. Having said that, Our Lions are going to be a bit too much for them though…this will be a low scoring, close game, with us winning by 4 or more…

but the actions of one does not reflect the mindset of all. For the most part, NN respects your team a lot. Before last week’s stomping of the bucs, I didn’t think we had a chance against the lions. There has been consistent growth from our team from week to week and last week it all just seemed to come together. We trust Harbaugh and the Niners and believe them capable of an upset.
Exactly, he's singling out the non sense comments,

Then they will spend the rest of the week pulling their hair out trying to figure out what to do about Calvin Johnson, as it should be.
We don't need 8 in the box. We have 52 in the box.
Try to kill Matt Stafford
That’s the only way we will stop Johnson, and that is gonna be tough.
Harbaugh will come up with something hopefully. This is a big test for both teams.

Comment straight from NN by me:
Seeing how we have given up the third fewest sacks in the NFL this year (after playing Jared Allen, Tamba Hali, DeMarcus Ware and Julius Peppers) and 6th fewest all of last season (after playing Clay Matthew twice, Julius Peppers twice, Jared Allen twice, Demarcus Ware, Cameron Wake, Trent Cole, etc), I’m not nearly as worried about the Niners pass rush.

Honestly ask yourself this question:
Who scares you more: DeMarcus Ware, Jared Allen or Justin Smith…
House of Spears | My Detroit Lions/NFL Blog
You underestimate
arguably the best 3-4 DE playing right now. He’s top tier, and will make plays all over the place.
"The Harbaughcolypse is upon us. No one in the NFL is safe"
Sure
but you expect him to have a 20 sack campaign anytime soon? You also do realize 3-4 DE’s role is to eat up blocks and defend the run, while a hOLB’s role is pass rush?
House of Spears | My Detroit Lions/NFL Blog
That is not how 3-4 works.
He generates oodles of pressure, drawing double teams and letting others make plays. That is when he is not chasing down receivers.
hmm

Same thing I say…question is whether or not you guys have the talent on the edge to take advantage of the free pass rushing lanes

Aldon Smith, Bowman, and maybe even Willis
would be more than happy to take advantage.

"The Harbaughcolypse is upon us. No one in the NFL is safe"
Sacks ARE plays
We pass the ball close to 65% of the time, so sacks are critical
House of Spears | My Detroit Lions/NFL Blog
Justin Smith has 3 sacks as a 3-4 DE
Ray McDonald has 2.5 sacks as a 3-4 DE
Brooks with 1 sack as a 3-4 OLB
Haralson with 2 sacks as a 3-4 OLB
Aldon Smith with 3.5 sacks as a 3-4 OLB

Problem is
as has been noted before elsewhere, the Lions are very good about keeping a clean sheet while sending out 4 or 5 on pass patterns. Stafford’s been sacked 6 times this year while attempting a LOT more passes than Smith.
Blitzing is generally a fools’ game against Stafford, since he spends a lot of time in the shotgun. He’s become quite good at hitting his hot reads, and more often than not, someone WILL be open, especially if you feel your D-backs are suspect without that rush.

2.8 YPC against Niners

Look Bottom Line, these two defenses are very alike even though they play different schemes. The Niners are a little more stout against the run and the Lions are a bit better against the pass. They are both fast, physical, hard hitting defenses, but I would also give the Lions the edge on speed. Could make a big difference on turf.

When the Lions do run, it's usually out of the shotgun formation
Matt Stafford only takes something like 25% of snaps from under center. I’m not sure if that’s something that makes a difference in stopping the run for the 49ers 3-4 D, just that we haven’t had good success with it at all so far until the Bears game.

Loins are certainly legit.
So are the Lions.
“i” and “o” are adjacent. It is a common error.

so I’d awesome it’s just a typo due to typing too quickly and not proofreading the comment prior to posting it.

what the hell is Carroll doing in Seattle? I see it two ways. First, Curry is that bad, so Pete can not draft with a damn. Or, Curry just needs to be in the right scheme. Which Pete got nothing in return for the 4th overall pick in ’09. Either way, Carroll must have a MBA in general management from Millen University.

you guys are gonna beat us with a quarterback who has had a handful of good games in 5 years and was labled by nearly EVERYONE to be the worst draft pick ever for SF. A corner to cover megatron that gave up 9 catches over 100yds and 3 td’s the last time they played and our qb situation now is only ten times better now than then. Not to mention we now have more weapons than your local gun store. What else? Oh yea, a defense who is very good at stopping the run, even though the Lions absolutely never depend on the run to win the football game. Never. A running back who is good but is certainly no AP and not much better than Forte even. Last bun not least in the awesome oline you guys have. So awesome in fact that they give up 1 sack every 10 times that Alex Smith drops back and you are only facing the best and deepest dline in all of football hands down. Now I get it.
"That's my quarterback man"- T.O.

There's a lot here so forgive me if someone suggested an answer
How do you think the Niners try and beat the Lions?
The Lions D Line is beastly and has mostly been unleashed to stop the pass
which accounts for some of the long runs- quick hitting runs the defense gave up because they are so aggressive and fast off the ball… at times it leaves wide open lanes.
We have also seen what they’ve done when focused on stopping the run (see stats against Lions on 4th and short).
Stafford is answering questions, just like Alex Smith -since Staff hasn’t been consistent because he’s been out of action. The Lions are built to pass, and the secondary has been pointed to as a weakness for SF.
The SF D is very good too, and we saw what a big play- return TD can do for their confidence.
How do you think the Niners’ somewhat young oline handles Detroit’s home crowd noise? I know they play Seattle where it’s loud but if I recollect they’ve struggled there.
by BillySimsMadeMeDo on Oct 13, 2011 1:24 PM EDT reply actions
Lot's of Kendall Hunter.
The secondary as a weakness has been a bit overblown. The #2 Corner spot is the only big weakness as long as Donte Whitner is healthy. Rookie CB Chris Culliver looked excellent last week against TB, so it’s possible the #2 corner spot is now taken care of as well.
