Lions Place Erik Coleman On Injured Reserve, Sign Joe Jon Finley
The Detroit Lions have placed safety Erik Coleman on injured reserve, ending his season. They have signed tight end Joe Jon Finley to take his spot on the roster.
Coleman had been absent from practice since he suffered an ankle injury against the Dallas Cowboys, and he missed Monday's game against the Chicago Bears. The Lions added depth to the safety position by signing Vincent Fuller, and it looks like Fuller isn't going anywhere with Coleman out for the year.
Finley returns to the Lions after being let go during the final round of NFL roster cuts. I thought he played well enough in the preseason to show he deserves a spot on the roster, but, of course, there just wasn't room with Brandon Pettigrew, Tony Scheffler and Will Heller locked in at tight end.
With Scheffler potentially being out this week with a concussion, Finley will be there as extra depth. Since he already knows the offense, he should be ready to play against the San Francisco 49ers, which had him on their practice squad in 2008 and 2009.

sucks
so many injuries this year for all NFL teams, but maybe it’s just that injuries are getting more attention than usual
I think it is fallout from not having off-season training programs.

Aaron Curry traded for a 7th round pick to Oakland
Mayhew napping this week? Former high round player fallen out of favor with current coaching regime and getting traded for pennies on the dollar. I thought this transaction was Mayhew’s calling card? Its too bad, I think Curry with better coaching could turn the corner and be a force.

Someone remember this.
Because I’ll go on record right now by saying Curry will make something of himself in Oakland in the next few seasons. If I’m wrong, throw this in my face, but Curry’s going to be a fine NFL player.

I don't think it's a particularly profound claim Mav
Curry has what it takes, just needs to get into a new system and get healthy. I agree, he’ll make himself into a fine player.

I'm not trying to be profound.
I’m just saying, I think if Mayhew had a shot at making a trade happen he should have done so. I think it’s a mistake not to have at least tried; maybe he did and we don’t know about it, but Curry would be awesome in this scheme.

Possible problem with the fit on salery cap.
Lets also remember that there is also a 4th or 5th round pick in 2013 as well as the 7th rounder in 2012.
Mayhew also got a good luck at him the year Stafford was drafted. It might not even be a talent thing, just a fit thing.
I remember reading somewhere
That Schwartz coming to Detroit was contingent upon having a franchise quarterback. I don’t think Pat White was who he had in mind.

I remember..
The year we drafted Stafford, everyone was calling out (on the radio at least) for the Lions to pick Aaron Curry instead of drafting another QB. SO glad we didn’t

i thought he had a big cap hit?
I could be wrong tho

unless things have changed
it’s 2.9 mil under

You are not even close.
Justan is much closer at $2.9 million. I have them pegged around $3.2 million under the cap at the moment.
The rumor on the Curry contract is $3.5 million this season and $3.75 millions next season. That would have made Curry the highest paid linebacker in Detroit if he were to become a Lion. I really don’t see ANY WAY IN HELL that Martin Mayhew kicks Justin Durant and Stephen Tulloch in the nuts by bringing in an under-performing player that has proven NOTHING so far in his career and paying them more than two guys who are performing for the Lions.
We need to get off this kick of collecting high draft picks just because we like their name. They have to fit the system and the salary structure to be here. Curry could possibly fit the Lions system (outside LB that can play the pass), but he most definitely does not fit the salary structure.

You guys are talking like Curry wouldn't restructure if he came here.
Lots of trades are contingent upon restructuring.
"You've got to respect your opponent, no matter who it is. You respect him best by going out there and beating him up." - Calvin Johnson
That may well be true
but my guess is that we would need him to restructure a longer way down then he and his agent find palatable. He would be the fifth lb here, It doesn’t matter at this point though. The deal’s been done and he’s elsewhere. I and most are happy with who we have. next subject :))

True enough.

yeah I'd bet it's the money
Wasn’t Curry a top five (or ten?) draft pick? Everyone says how all our top picks are going to come and bite us in the cap, and now we want another one who’d be a back up!?!? I’ll pass and stick with our guys, instead of potentially paying a price next year due to cap issues.

It is the cap room problem...
We only have a couple million, and I think his salary was around five million this season.

Sounds like Schffler is going to miss a couple of weeks with the concussion, if their sign another TE.
With the Lions offense...
They need 3 active TE on Gameday…… no full back.
JJ Fin is a fine replacement.

Erik, we hardly knew you.
Silva better be working hard to improve himself on the practice squad as the Lions may be calling him up soon.
"Filling a need doesn’t necessarily mean you’re getting a good player," said Schwartz. "It doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re getting a player that best fits; it doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re getting a player that’s better than what you have already."
Why haven't they already?
Is Spievey back and ready to go, don’t we need some depth there?
by damnitdamnitdamnit on Oct 13, 2011 6:40 PM EDT up reply actions
Seriously whats our depth at safety?
We have Delmas and Wendling to start and thats it? With Spivey down and Coleman out who else do we have? Brandon McDonald?
by Northern Lite on Oct 13, 2011 8:36 PM EDT up reply actions
That's the million dollar question, isn't it?
Why haven’t they brought Silva up yet?
It could, and I’m just spitballing here, mean that Silva has been extremely over rated by people here. He’s still raw.

Bingo!
Silva is a big time risk taker. He is not a consistent tackler, not is he particularly great at making run reads. He is a one trick trick pony that knows how to jump a route and make a play on the ball, but if he misses, look out. We have another guy like this on the roster named Alphonso Smith. You don’t see the Lions tripping over themselves to get him back into the lineup either.
Once again, for as many times as it takes for people to understand, both Silva and Phonz are developmental players in the Lions system. The coaches like their ability to play the ball, but they do not want a one trick pony. They want a solid all-around safety that can make plays in a variety of ways. They can jump routes, but mainly when they cover short passes and have people behind them to cover for them if they miss. The Lions coaches would probably prefer a jarring tackle after the catch that causes a fumble to taking the chance of jumping the route and missing.
I know a lot of the fans would like to see those sexy interception plays from Silva happening. I think it is more likely we would see Silva getting abused like Phonz did in the later part of last season.

Yay Billy Bob Joe Jimmy John Finley!
Welcome back brother.

lol
I love the addition of Billy Joe bob! I was hoping he’d make the squad. Hopefully he plays well enough to stick with the team.
Kinda worried about Silva’s progress if we’re keeping Fuller around.

More worried about speivey
silva is a good prospect but lets keep our eyes on the prize. As for finley i like him but I dont think he’s going to unseat the scheff.I love our TE corps though.Even with finley in there i feel very confident.
I was thinking more along the lines
Of Heller not scheff. And yeah, of course we worry about spiv, but I’m also concerned that a guy fresh off the street is a better pick-up over a young guy who has been in camp and at practices.

speivey isn't hurt
he is out for personal reasons, his cousin who played basketball in romania or somewhere like that, was shot and killed just before the monday night game, is what i read somewhere

Spievey has a "leg" in Schwartz speak.
Hamstring issue. But the cousin issue played a factor in him not playing last week.
Coleman will be missed
The guy makes tons of tackles on special teams. Sucks for him.
This is unrelated to this thread but
I was wondering if anybody can give me the rundown on Madden 12 for the Wii. I’m buying it today for my son and I and currently have Madden 11, which had its flaws but was entertaining, and was hoping this game is better.
Are the graphics still cartoony and unrealistic?
Did they fix the horrid pass defense?
Do you think its the same or better than 11 and are the Lions any good in the updated rosters?
Thanks guys!

I can't say much for the Wii version
I have never seen it or played it, but I own it for the 360. On the 360 version the defense is better and the Lions are one of the better teams now after the latest roster updates.
Formerly WestSideLionsFan
yeah, I have it for ps3
Some of the changes are good, some not so much. The only thing that really puts it over ’11 is that the Lions keep getting respect through roster updates.

Ugh.
I cannot stand Jermichael Finley. There’s very few players that I just legitimately don’t respect as a person or a player, and he’s one of them.

Welcome back Joe Jon
but I’m bummed about Tony Scheffler, he has been a heck of a threat this year running routes like a receiver and generally playing very well. Very much hope Spievey is coming back because he is missed and just one of the reasons our backfield is so much better this year. When they said Coleman was on crutches I wondered if he was hurt bad and it turns out he is. Injuries are adding up.
About A Curry I gotta believe in the front office and think they seen something that would make us not want to pursue him, don’t think it was just Seattle’s system but we’ll see what he does in Oakland.
