Ask The Falcoholic!

Greetings, Lions fans!

I'm here to answer any questions you may have about the Atlanta Falcons before the big game this weekend. If you want to know why Michael Turner is a terrifying human tank, why the Falcons' passing game has floundered or why I never shake hands like Harbaugh, I'm glad to answer. Ask away and myself or one of my readers will be happy to answer.

If I can be totally honest, I'm thrilled for you guys this season. You've deserved a good season for many, many years, and while I can't root for you this weekend, know I wish your team the best over the long haul.

Here's to a great game. If you would kindly Rec this so it remains up at the top of the FanPost list, I would appreciate it.

Matt Ryan

has been drawing a fair amount of criticism recently and I’m wondering if the fanbase feels it’s justified or unfair.
Thanks for posting this btw and welcome. I’m happy to have something else to chat about other than what has been beaten to death.

It's a little bit of both

Early in the season, the offensive line was doing an abysmal job of protecting him. He was sacked like a dozen times in four games, and as a result, he started to develop some bad habits.

That said, I think he’s returning to normal, even if the numbers aren’t really showing it. It’ll be interesting to see how he does against your secondary.

The defense seems to be struggling a bit more this year

at least on the back end, what are some of the reasons and do you think it will fixed soonly?

It's really been because of a lack of a consistent pass rush

Receivers simply have too much time to run routes, and no corner can cover a talented receiver forever.

They’ve been making strides in recent weeks, picking Cam Newton three times last week and picking up six sacks in the last two games. They have to keep the momentum going, though.

Couple things

Julio Jones status is he gonna be ready to go sunday?

Is the Falcons offense going back to running the ball with turner? They seemed to have lost there identity early in the year which was run and pa pass.

What happened to the O line? Ryan has seem to lost alot of the protection he looked to have last year.

As far as I know, Julio will be ready to go. I know he’s chomping at the bit, and the passing game isn’t the same without him.

They’ll run against you, given your relatively poor ranking against the run. Turner is an absolute bulldozer against struggling rush defenses.

The O-line is steadily improving, thankfully, but they’re not back to where they were. They’re not playing cohesively as a unit.

How often does Turner get ran up the middle?

They probably will

But they’re less inclined to do so than the 49ers. My best guess is that you’ll see a lot of Turner to the outside, where his crazy power will (hopefully) let him plow over guys a little smaller than Suh.

The offense seems to disappear in parts at odd times

You shouldn’t ever have a problem running with The Burner in the backfield, nor should you have too many problems throwing with Matt Ryan and that WR group, but I’ve noticed this season that there are these long dry spells on offense.

Is that a line/protection problem, or a playcalling problem?

[...]when Giants coach Steve Owen, a certified defensive genius, was asked how he planned to stop Nagurski, he said: "With a shotgun, as he’s leaving the dressing room."

It's a little bit of everything

The line was having major problems earlier this year, and is making incremental progress. Mike Mularkey, our offensive coordinator, is the most hated man in Atlanta. His playcalling is generally conservative and sometimes, to be honest, stupid.

Just so you know:

Our offense has been pretty damn inconsistent, and with Best likely not playing our running game will be practically non-existent. Some games Stafford looks like he’s well on his way to being an elite QB, but our O-Line has had issues giving him time to make a play the last couple of weeks, and he’s also seemingly prone to getting rattled and missing easy throws after being hit a couple of times.

Just so you know.

But is just 3-3 as of 6 games in, do you think that the Falcons are better than last year, worse, or the same despite record?

Also, Michael Turner ran for over 200 yds back in our winless season of 08’, do you think he finds similar success like Gore did last Sunday or do you think the Lions D will be more prepared for him?

I think we're about to find out how good they actually are

They’re 3-3, have worked out some of the early season kinks and appear to be heading in the right direction. If they can beat you guys or at least play you extremely tough, I’ll be encouraged. I don’t think we’ve seen what this team is capable of yet, so I’ll go with same despite record.

I think he’ll put up at least 100 on 25+ carries. The Falcons are going to run him until his legs fall off or the Lions completely shut him down.

First off, thanks for the classy intro.

I don’t visit your site at all, and just wanted to get your opinion for how your fan base is feeling about the season right now?

Is there a lot of uneasiness that the Falcons may have “regressed” a bit? Or is there a high level of confidence that the South division is still there for the taking?

My 2011 Lions season prediction: 12 wins and 4 losses. I made this prediction the week after the New England preseason game. It's looking a little pessimistic right now.

by NorthLeft12 on Oct 18, 2011 11:50 AM EDT reply actions

We're feeling a little better right now

As I commented last week, the level of angst after the 2-3 start was unreal. I think you guys took your winless season better than a lot of Falcons fans took that. Kind of the way the fanbase is.

The South is very much there for the taking, but I think the Falcons need to string together a few wins in a row before anybody starts thinking that way.

Neutral question...

Have you seen a decline in officiating? … phantom yards added, phantom chopblocks, phantom horse collars… and add in a “Process” challenge….. That was just last weekend for us….lol…

Do you agree with changing to Full time refs? It would seem prudent to atleast have the Umpires and replay official full time…. no?

I don't know if I've seen a decline

So much as I’ve seen a lot of dumb calls. You see that every year, but it’s been pretty concentrated through the first few weeks. The Falcons got jobbed a couple times in the early going.

That’s an interesting question. If the NFL would pay them full-time, we might get more out of them? Maybe?

I’ve listened to quite a few discussions… and it seems logical for officials to be constantly reviewing game films, calls, replays, etc…. as to be in the “NOW” with regards to game time decisions. Afterall… this is a ‘professional’ sports league.

Maybe not EVERY official needs to be full time, Replay and Umps seem to be the necessary… and then coordinate with their “teams”.

Anything wrong with Roddy?

IDK seems little flat this year. Last week he had only 2 catches, so was that more of a scheme thing since Turner was blowing up the Carolina D or is his hammy really bothering him more than he is letting up?

Do you think any of his dropsies have to do with being upset that there is a new kid on the block taking some of his targets (Julio Jones)

Not that I picture Roddy like that, he seems like a classy team first kind of guy, but I just wondered if he had more going on off the field besides the hammy with the dropitis he has had this year.

Well, well, well...so many questions

What are your feelings about Chris Houston? It seems he’s been alot better for us than you. 3 INT’s this year.

Ah, Houston

I always thought he should have been better than he was in Atlanta. The new coaching staff didn’t take a shine to him, but I think the change of scenery really helped.

See above for the tight end answer. Our pass rush is good, getting better but wildly inconsistent from week to week.

Houston

is a good press corner though not an elite one. He’s actually getting better at turning and looking for the ball this year. I wouldn’t describe it as a strength yet but he rarely did it last year. It seems to be a combination of scheme and clicking with the coaching staff here that’s made him a better fit with us than he was for the Falcons.

Pass rush is really starting to gel

Ray Edwards has had two consecutive good weeks, and was a beast by all accounts against CAR. It seems like they were trying to mess with Ray too much initially. They have since put him back at his normal position (LDE) almost exclusively and he’s been much, much better and more consistent.

Getting Babineaux back and almost to full health is going to help exponentially, and it seems that Peters and Jerry are really on the edge of breaking out. Everyone knows how great and lethal Abe can be, but his hip has been bothering him.

Who are the most improved and most disappointing players from last year on your team so far?

And also, are there any under the radar impact Falcons players that Lions fans should be aware of or might want to look for while watching the game?

Formerly WestSideLionsFan

by WalterM on Oct 19, 2011 4:00 AM EDT reply actions

Good question

We have so many good young players that it’s hard to say who the most improved is so far. If I had to go on this season alone, I’d probably go with Sean Weatherspoon. He’s really starting to show why he was a first-round pick last year.

Most disappointing would have to be Dunta Robinson. He gets a bad rap over at the Falcoholic, but he has been terrible this season so far. Not sure why that’s the case, but it looks like that’s beginning to get fixed.

Under the Radar: Our starting safeties (William Moore and Thomas Decoud) get no national love, though they are a solid and upcoming duo. If you don’t know about the LBs, watch them as well. Lofton has the ability to dominate against the rush and has made big strides in coverage. Nicholas is probably challenging ’Spoon for most improved this season.

he’s the only one with the balls to do it though, it seems. He’s been tweeting this week that when (or I should probably say if) he scores again, he’s got a variation of the Bird he wants to break out. I think it’s a hybrid Cotton-Eyed Joe and Dirty Bird.

How is Ray Edwards playing and who is your best LB

I thought Ray might be the best DE available this FA and would definitely add a missing piece to your defense. Saw a little bit of a game and he was looking OK, but haven’t been hearing his name at all.

Also I don’t really know much about your LB core. Is Abraham a pure DE? The only LB I know is Lofton who seems like a very solid player for your team. Any info here would be greatly appreciated.

RE started off slowly, but has really come on the last two games.

Abraham is solely a DE, though our DEF Coordinator (if you can truly call him that) does like our DLine to drop back (too) occasionally.

Lofton seems to have gotten better this year because he worked a lot on his coverage skills in the offseason. ‘Spoon has been our most improved player, and looks dominant at times, but still hasn’t played a complete game. Lastly, Stephen Nicholas looked to be a solid career backup, but earned his starting spot with good-to-excellent coverage skills. He’s battling Spoon imo for most improved.

That's another good but difficult question

By the tape, Garrett Reynolds is bigger than Dahl and looks more valuable and flat out better at times. However, the whole of the OLine has been pathetic this year, especially over the first three games. They’re making strides, but still struggle too often at giving Ryan enough time to throw.

Many go the easy route at pointing out that Dahl is the reason for the struggles, but I think it’s a much more complicated issue than that. I’m sure that’s part of the reason, but the bigger issue seems to be that they were never very good, and the last couple of years Ryan has made them look better with the short to intermediate quick passing game. Since everyone heard how ‘explosive’ this OFF was going to be this off season, longer routes were implemented, and it looks like the OLine just can’t handle that extra second or two required.

Ohi guys, fancy seeing you here.

This should be an intriguing match-up. Both teams seem to be completely opposite offensively and it’s going to come down to whose defense can control the game better. Given that the Falcons are a run-first team, the Lions struggle against the run to an extent, and that if their pass rush shows up, this should be an advantage to the Falcons. The way they’re built just favors a ball-control game like this.

Also, seriously, if you thought it was bad enough with Murlarkey, you somehow managed to get stale cup o’ coffee guy Bratkowski as your QB coach. Redundant and inefficient play-calling at its maximum.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported Sunday night that several Packers players complained after the game about the Falcons hitting them after the whistle.

“Great teams don’t indulge in the kind of cheap stuff the Falcons do,” Packers nose tackle B.J. Raji said. "We’re the champions and we play that way. We walk away from the stuff they pull. These guys are coached to play after the whistle.

“I don’t know what the deal is. I think it’s a lack of talent on their part. We didn’t worry about any of that. We came out and played our game.”

“It’s unnecessary,” Packers defensive end Ryan Pickett said. “They call it playing physical. But it’s after the whistle. It’s not physical. We know it watching tape that they like to hit after the whistle. You have to watch yourself around the piles. They point at you if you react. We just felt like if we just punch them up front at the start it would end that.”
